In this episode of the What Now Podcast, I sit down with Robin Ritch, author of Using Friction to Grow, to talk about the powerful stories of LDS women who navigated faith, culture, and personal purpose during a time of major change. Robin shares what she learned from interviewing women who stayed rooted in their faith while forging unique paths through work, family, and personal revelation. We talk about the idea that life isn't “either or” but “and”—that each woman's path with God is personal and evolving. Robin explains how friction, rather than being something to fear, can actually refine us, deepen our relationship with God, and help us grow into who we're meant to become. At the center of it all is the importance of personal revelation, trusting God with your path, and giving grace to others doing the same.Link to the small group women's workshop ⬇️https://bit.ly/WhatNowAtHome

I recently finished a powerful new book titled Using Friction to Grow: Stories of Strength & Resilience—LDS Women 1968–1976, written by my friend Robin Ritch. A year or so ago, Robin told me she felt inspired to interview a group of women whose lives didn't fit the traditional mold of “Mormon womanhood” in the 1970s and 80s. I love that she followed that prompting. The way she wove together their stories—sometimes in fragments, sometimes in themes—creates a tapestry of insight that is both honest and deeply hopeful. As I read, several passages stayed with me. These womenexperienced real friction—within society, within the Church, and within themselves. Yet they chose to stay, to wrestle, and to grow. I want to share a few excerpts that especially resonated with me and offer some reflections along the way. I highly recommend this book!Using Friction to Grow: Stories of Strength and Resilience, LDS Women 1968-1976: Ritch, Robin: 9781961471320: Amazon.com: Books

Robin Ritch has spent her career building things that matter. She has led teams at Microsoft, Intel, and Cisco, and most recently served as President and Publisher of Deseret News Publishing Company, where she helped transform a 172-year-old institution into a nationally recognized digital voice. Throughout her career, Robin has had a knack for seeing around corners. She has launched new products, modernized organizations, and brought together unlikely communities around conversations that matter. She gives back through board service at The Policy Project, WikiCharities, Social Venture Partners, and Mission Edge, organizations working to make communities stronger. For as long as she can remember, Robin has been fascinated by women and their relationship with God. That lifelong curiosity is what led her to write “Using Friction to Grow”, her first book. Robin examines case studies of Latter-day Saint women who navigated significant social and ecclesiastical changes during the 1970s. She discusses how these women managed friction from society, family, and the Church to develop deeper discipleship and personal sanctification. Links Using Friction to Grow: Stories of Strength and Resilience, LDS Women 1968-1976 Watch the video and share your thoughts in the Zion Lab community Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community Highlights Key Insights The Purpose of Friction: Friction is a divine design intended to slow individuals down, allowing them to refine their relationship with God and smooth away “rough edges” of character. Personal vs. Organizational Revelation: Individuals may receive personal revelation for their own lives that precedes broader organizational shifts within the Church. Historical Resilience: Women in the 1970s drew strength from the stories of their suffragette grandmothers, recognizing that navigating tension within a faith community is not a new phenomenon. Individual Agency and Revelation: The women Robin interviewed did not view Church counsel as a reason to stop their personal progression; instead, they used it as a prompt to seek their own confirmed answers through prayer and fasting. Grace for Diverse Paths: These women practiced deep empathy, recognizing that God provides unique answers for different individuals and that one person’s path does not dictate the “correct” path for everyone else. Leadership Applications Validating the Struggle: Leaders can help members understand that feeling “friction” with a policy or teaching is not a sign of unworthiness but an opportunity for a sanctifying “wrestle” with God. Managing Implementation: Recognizing the gap between revelation and organizational implementation helps leaders be more patient with institutional changes and more supportive of members who see needs before the organization adapts. 00:02:00 – Robin’s Book: Using Friction to Grow 00:03:00 – The Importance of Women’s Stories 00:04:00 – The 1970s: A Time of Friction for Women 00:06:00 – The Equal Rights Amendment and Church Response 00:07:00 – Personal Stories of Friction and Faith 00:09:00 – Navigating Friction in Faith Communities 00:10:00 – The Role of Personal Revelation 00:12:00 – The Nature of Friction in Growth 00:13:00 – Engaging with Friction for Personal Growth 00:15:00 – The Evolution of Church Practices 00:17:00 – The Importance of Change and Growth 00:18:00 – Balancing Hope and Disappointment in Faith 00:20:00 – The Role of Friction in Personal Development 00:21:00 – Story of a Woman’s Experience with Church Leadership 00:24:00 – Finding Strength in Christ Amidst Friction 00:25:00 – The Impact of Personal Stories 00:27:00 – The Need for Women’s Voices in the Church 00:29:00 – Encouragement for Women in Parenting 00:30:00 – Broadening Engagement Beyond Parenting 00:32:00 – The Importance of Sharing Light 00:33:00 – The Role of Leaders in Navigating Friction 00:37:00 – Understanding Different Perspectives 00:40:00 – The Influence of Social Media on Women’s Stories 00:41:00 – The Responsibility of the Hearer in Storytelling The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints’ mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. All the Film Things is BACK after a short break! On the fifty- ninth episode, production designer Izzy Dondero and filmmaker Franklin Ritch join me in analyzing Alan J. Pakula's 1976 biographical political thriller masterpiece, All the President's Men, to celebrate the film's 50th anniversary this month! This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. All the President's Men is without a doubt one of the most significant films in American cinema for many reasons from the story at the center to being really the first film about journalism. The film, which is essentially a reenactment, follows The Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) slowly uncover the infamous story of Watergate scandal that led to the first and only resignation of a US president. This slow burn paranoid thriller is the final film in Alan J. Pakula's paranoid trilogy and, considering the film ends, the paranoia is deeply felt within the audience. All the President's Men, which is based on the book of the same title by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, was published just two years before this film was released. Robert Redford secured the rights to the book before Woodward and Bernstein were even finished writing it because he was fascinated in what they were uncovering, and, even more so, in the two very different journalists who had trouble getting along in bringing this story to light. All the President's Men went on to win four out of the eight Academy Awards the film was nominated for, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Jason Robards' portrayal of Ben Bradlee. What speaks to the film's legacy more than its Oscar wins is that this film, this now legendary story of Woodward and Bernstein, inspired a generation to become journalists which has surely continued to this day. This is Franklin's third and Izzy's first time on the podcast! I interviewed Franklin in December 2024 (see Episode 34) and, last fall, he joined our friend Emma Catharine and I in discussing another 70s classic, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (check out Episode 50). I became friends with Franklin over two years ago and Izzy about a year ago at Film Bar but the two of them have been friends and collaborators for a decade now. All the President's Men is a longtime favorite of Franklin's as well while this was Izzy's first time watching the film. It's evident in our discussion, and audibly through our voices, we all are very passionate about this film. That passion is audible but, unfortunately, Franklin's audio had some technical difficulties so he sounds a little quieter than usual. This episode was recorded on March 19, 2026. Just this past weekend on April 4, Izzy produced ExHiBiT JAX where four Jacksonville writers, including Franklin, brought their short plays to the stage! It was a big success as the “one- time only” showing shortly became sold out so another earlier showing was added! You'll have to stay tuned if they'll make ExHiBiT JAX a series by following @exhibitjax on Instagram but, in the meantime, Izzy is also producing a production of The Sound of Music in St. Augustine! Auditions for every role will be held in person on April 25 but self- tapes can be submitted. Go to Limelight-Theatre.org for more details! In this episode, Izzy, Franklin, and I talk about what All the President's Men is like to watch decades removed from the events depicted in the film, the peculiar prominent prop in Woodward's apartment, the surprising number of humorous moments, and how journalism has changed in 50 years! All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

Episode 190 – Ritch DuncanThis week's guest is Ritch Duncan — comedian, writer, former Weekend Update joke contributor, and one of the founders of Deathbed, the wonderfully twisted horror platform created by comedy writers.Ritch and Mike have a fantastic conversation about how Ritch found his way into stand-up, his time going to school in Indiana, and the enormous influence David Letterman had on him creatively. They also dig into his work with the Stangle Brothers before they became head writers for Letterman, and the path that eventually led him into some truly memorable corners of the comedy world. That includes being on hand for Dave's unforgettable Billy on the Street segment, shot and featured on Late Show just before Dave retired.Ritch also shares the origin story of Deathbed, which he co-founded with Ben Zelevansky and others, and talks about the unique creative lane it occupies — where comedy writers get to let their darker instincts roam. Mike and Ritch also discuss the latest story featured on the platform, written by none other than prolific Letterman writer Steve Young. To close the episode, Mike shares the full Billy on the Street clip discussed during the conversation, and we extend our sincere thanks to Worldwide Pants for the many ways they continue to support the show by allowing us to use these pieces of Letterman history. Then, as always, if you feel like doing something noble today, head over to Hello-Deli.com — the only place on Earth to get official Late Show with David Letterman merchandise, courtesy of the one and only Rupert Jee. On the fiftieth (!!) episode of All the Film Things, my friends, filmmakers Emma Catherine and Franklin Ritch, join me in analyzing Miloš Forman's 1975 psychological comedy- drama classic, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest! This episode is spoiler- filled and contains some explicit language. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest follows R.P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) as he becomes a patient at a mental hospital. He quickly becomes a leader with his rebellious, lively nature that awakens his fellow patients but antagonizes the woman who runs the ward, Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), which creates a power balance slowly shifts in McMurphy's favor. The film starts as a comedy- drama but elevates in the third act when it becomes a tragedy. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has a stellar ensemble cast that includes Danny DeVito, Will Sampson, and Brad Dourif. This film is the second of three films to have won the “Big Five” at the Oscars and has been widely viewed as one of the greatest films ever made for now 50 years. The film is based on Ken Kesey's 1961 book and, after Kirk Douglas bought the rights soon after the book was published, he wasn't able to get this film made in the 60s, so his son Michael Douglas took over the project and history was made. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is one of my very favorite films and I'm thrilled to have finally had such a stimulating conversation on the film for this podcast. This is Franklin's second and Emma's first time on the podcast! I interviewed Franklin at the end of last year (check out Episode 34). I became friends with Franklin approaching two years ago and Emma about a year ago at Film Bar but they have been both friends and collaborators for well over a decade. Franklin directed Emma as Cat- woman in his film New Wings: A Batman Fan Film which you should all watch by clicking this link. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a longtime favorite of Franklin's as well while this was Emma's first time watching the film. As we discuss throughout the episode, we have all been deeply impacted by many moments in this film. This episode was recorded on August 21, 2025. Emma will be starring in a spooky aerial showcase presented by the Ancient City Aerial Arts called Cirque de Morts on October 3 and 4th in St. Augustine, Florida! Get your tickets now for the 7 pm showings or matinee showing before they sell out by clicking here! As for Franklin, he took the time to shout out the new films made by his friends and co- stars from his film The Artifice Girl, which you should all absolutely watch by either renting it on platforms like Apple and Amazon Prime but it is also streaming free with ads on Tubi. Watch the trailer for David Girard's upcoming short film, "Normal", by clicking here and watch the trailer for "Would You Rather", Tatum Matthews' directorial short film by clicking here! Both shorts are coming soon! You should all also check out Franklin's YouTube channel, Last Resort Ideas, to watch his past work and fantastic videos by clicking this link.In this episode, we discuss the big questions surrounding the film including whether or not McMurphy is crazy and if Nurse Ratched has the patients' best interest at heart. Emma dives deep into understanding the potential motivations behind Nurse Ratched and also tells a funny story about a bad football game experience in a little tangent. Franklin talks about the incredible differences between the book and the film while also pointing out the corrupt system in place that harms the patients at the ward. Our analytical conversation is wide- encompassing of the film as we also talk about the push and pull Billy faces between the protagonist and antagonist, the famously shocking electroshock therapy scene, and the cathartic ending. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

Episode 34: Interview with Franklin Ritch

All the Film Things

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 18, 2024 102:40

On the thirty- fourth episode of ATFT, I talk with writer/ director/ editor Franklin Ritch!  Franklin Ritch, one of Jacksonville's most prominent filmmakers, has worn many hats since he was a child. Once he was gifted a video camera by his grandmother for Christmas, there was no slowing Franklin down. His earliest projects were stop motion shorts, and he continued to make films through middle school and high school. His work only proved more versatile in terms of stories, characters, and genres when making a series of short films, such as "Bedridden" and "New Wings: A Batgirl Fan Film" under his production company Last Resort Ideas. Franklin's debut feature film, The Artifice Girl, had quite a successful film festival run. Franklin has been named one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” by Filmmaker Magazine. Franklin is without a doubt on the rise and a filmmaker who I'm sure you'll be hearing more about in the years to come.  Franklin's latest project is the highly- anticipated sci- fi short film, "Last Weekend". The short is set in the distant future where aliens have taken over Earth while humans live in reservations and follows two aliens who approach humans intending to help… but the humans are skeptical. While the plot is mostly under wraps at the moment, the film is largely a commentary on colonialism, specifically the treatment of indigenous communities in America. Franklin directed, wrote, and edited this film. "Last Weekend" reunites the team behind The Artifice Girl, including actors David Girard and Tatum Matthews. If you look closely in the final scene, you may spot past ATFT guest, Bernardo Goya! "Last Weekend "is currently in the midst of a film festival run and is expected to release this Winter! While you're waiting for "Last Weekend" to be posted on YouTube, check out Franklin's past work on the Last Resort Ideas Youtube channel by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/c/LastResortIdeas  This is Franklin's first appearance on ATFT! We were introduced through our mutual friend, Bassel Jadaa, nearly a year ago at joint WIFT x Jacksonville Film Bar event. It was in this first meeting that I asked Franklin to come on the show, for which he was absolutely down for, and over the course of the year I've gotten to know him by chatting with him monthly at Film Bar. He's one of the people I look forward to chatting with most each month since, aside from being very kind and humble, we both share a strong passion for cinema. Since we mostly talk about cinema rather than our own work, it wasn't until I started preparing for this episode that I realized just how brilliant and rare of a filmmaker Franklin is. The Artifice Girl was without a doubt remarkable, ahead- of- its- time debut feature film, but watching Franklin's films and videos from high school is what blew me away. There is not one bad film or video posted through the Last Resort Ideas Youtube channel. His early work is incredibly well made in all aspects from writing to acting to special effects, proving how gifted he is as a filmmaker. For this reason, this was one of the most exciting interviews I have ever had the pleasure of conducting. This episode was recorded on December 5, 2024.  In this episode, Franklin talks about his connection to film and filmmaking as well as his early work up to his recent projects such as The Artifice Girl. Up and coming filmmakers will greatly benefit from learning about Franklin and his drive to making his cinematic dreams a reality. Franklin also talks about his integral relationship with frequent collaborator Britt McTammany, what he gained as a filmmaker from being on the set of his mentor Mike Flanagan's new film The Life of Chuck, and why the end of each of his films contain a credit for “Marlon Brando's chest”. Ritch Shydner Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson - Part Deux Ritch Shydner could come back every week and we'd never run out of things to discuss, it would always be entertaining, and he'd always be funny. Co-host! There are no accidents. Losing his signal last week on the road in Georgia was a blessing. We got a Shydner double dip. This conversation with the standup comedian who holds the distinction of making a dozen appearances on Carson's Tonight Show, as well as numerous appearances on Letterman and Leno, had fabulous stories about the former and the latter, Sam Kinison, their 80s NY road trip before Sam's superstardom, and how their debauchery almost cost Ritch big time, Roseanne, who handed Ritch his segue from front of the camera to writer, Jeff Foxworthy, a natural after only a few weeks of standup, who created a new joke form, Bill Maher, and True Story, Mike Binder, and Miind of The Married Man, and Robert Klein who shared a most unlikely kinship… there were gems aplenty. But, it was Ritch's poignant, heartfelt recounting of his parents' 72-year marriage, his father's drinking, his mother's rolling pin, the silent years after graduating law school and choosing comedy, Ritch's redemption, and then getting sober, making amends, his father following suit on both, and the shift in their relationship for the 36 years that followed until just last month when his dad was transitioning this earthly world. Moving, beyond words… and, funny! I so enjoyed every word, every moment, with this self-aware, humble, wildly intelligent - emotionally as well as intellectually, ever-evolving, hysterically funny man. Do I need a reason to have a Part 3? Ritch Shydner Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson - Part Deux! Ritch Shydner Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Well, that was a first! On the road with Ronna and Ritch Shydner as they traveled from Florida back home to North Carolina. Literally, in the car, in the fading light, in rural Georgia, with intermittent signal. It was as much a surprise to me as to you! Kinda like doing an interview in a disco with strobe lights. Trooper Ritch didn't want to cancel even though he was in the midst of family tragedy, having very recently lost his dad, and was out of state with his mom to help. I knew all that, the driving adventure, not so much. Please forgive the challenges and appreciate the funny that Ritch is even in the midst of this! We talked the swing states as they drove through one, the DNC, new hope, sugar addiction, intermittent dieting, the no-matter-what club for drinking and drugging that just doesn't work with salt and sweets. Ritch's very early standup days, whilst in law school, getting the degree but opting out, what joy for his parents! Trying LA, choosing NY, the crowd he came up with, the clubs he came up in, in the stand-up 80s heyday, meeting Carol, doing his first Carson, still high, hitting bottom, a Mark who saved him, and then we lost him, again literally, just when we were about to hear a GREAT story… so… there will be a Part 2, for sure! Safe travels, you two. Heartfelt condolences. Thanks for being willing. Next time Ritch will be sitting still in a well-lit room where we can see his whole handsome face. Sendng love. Apologies to all who hung in and those who din't… we'll make it up to you! Most remarkable… even with all of this- Ritch was still HYSTERICAL! All right, everybody, I've got an amazing special episode in store for you all today. So, I've partnered together with the Firing the Man podcast, and Dave and Ken, who run this podcast, have done an amazing job and interviewed Adam Feinberg. Adam had a nine figure exit just a couple of years ago, and he dropped some massive knowledge bombs as to the actionable steps that he took in order to grow his brand, big enough that he had a nine-figure exit where the majority of his revenue was coming from Amazon. So, there's a lot to dig into today. Okay, so make sure you take some notes. And then when you're done with this episode, make sure you go follow Firing the Man podcast by David and Ken.Adam (00:00:44) - You have to if you want to be an entrepreneur, you have to keep your expenses reasonable and you have to be willing to take risk. And if you don't take risks and take chances, you're just not going to succeed over the long haul. Kind of following strategies correctly pays off.Adam (00:01:02) - We also invested a lot of money in advertising and building up our brands, which I think is really, really important on Amazon. I kind of learned from it that it's kind of better in a lot of instances, to be the big fish in a little pond than like, the eighth best fish in a big pond. Amazon.com once you have momentum, if you're in the top couple listings in the category, you don't want to give it up no matter what. So I would start and people would laugh. There'd be like your air shipping, solar lights, and the solar lights cost $15 to air strip and you only make ten bucks on each one. Why are you doing that? And I said, it's worth it because we don't want to lose our rank on Amazon.Intro (00:01:43) - Welcome, everyone, to the Firing the Man podcast, a show for anyone who wants to be their own boss. If you sit in a cubicle every day and know you were capable of more, then join us. This show will help you build a business and grow your passive income streams in just a few short hours per day.Intro (00:02:01) - And now your host, serial entrepreneurs David Schwimmer and Ken Wilson.David (00:02:06) - Welcome everyone to The Firing Man podcast. On today's episode, we have the privilege to interview Adam Feinberg. Adam is the CEO of Web Deals Direct and Amazon FBA business that is home to more than 30 brands. Adam recently sold his business to perch, a technology driven commerce company that acquires and operates top Amazon third party sellers and other direct to consumer brands at scale, resulting in an impressive nine figure earnout. We are really excited to share Adam's story and knowledge with listeners today. Welcome to the show, Adam.Adam (00:02:40) - All right. Thanks for having me. I'm glad to be here.David (00:02:42) - Yeah, absolutely. So first things first, tell us a little bit about your background and how you got to where you are today.Adam (00:02:49) - All right. Well, I used to be in the IT consulting business, and I have a wife who's a physician, and I have two big kids now. My daughter is a freshman in college, but about 10 or 11 years ago, we figured our lifestyle didn't work.Adam (00:03:03) - And as well as I thought I was doing, she told me my job wasn't important. So you stay at home so I could have either been a stay at home dad, or I had to figure out something to do that worked with carpool drop offs and soccer, little league and karate class and all that. So I started running an SEO company at home. I put up a website. I learned a little bit about ranking in Google, helping my wife with her business, and some of her friends with their businesses. And I got lucky with it and put a website on the first page for a bunch of search terms like SEO company, SEO, agency, SEO services, and built up an SEO company up to about $3 million annually for about 4 or 5 years. I have a partner named Richard Bell, and he talked me into expanding the SEO business into the UK in 2012 or so, and we were going along merrily. Google made some changes. It started to become a little bit more difficult as a business to get small business customers competitive and Google rankings.Adam (00:04:10) - We were looking for something else to do. My friend Richard had a chiropractor friend who was selling swim goggles and swim caps and making more money than he was being a chiropractor in 2014 and was making fun of us, that he was doing better than we were with this little side gig, but kind of invited us along at the same time. So I told Ritch to quit doing SEO and to look into this. In 2014, I gave him a gigantic budget of maybe 25,000 bucks. I said, turn it into $100 million. And six years later, here we are. But, you know, there's a couple of things in between then that's pretty much the background of how we got into Amazon. E-commerce was just kind of a side thing, as we saw that digital marketing using search engine optimization was kind of a declining and more. Difficult and challenging business and adventure.Ken (00:05:02) - Yeah, that's pretty awesome. So, Adam, you mentioned you have been an entrepreneur for about 11 years. Is that correct?Adam (00:05:08) - That's correct.Ken (00:05:09) - Awesome. So did you have any fears about jumping over from corporate life to an entrepreneur, or was anything holding you back, or did you just dive right in?Adam (00:05:20) - I was absolutely petrified. I always wanted to become an entrepreneur. My dad was an entrepreneur, my grandparents were an entrepreneur. But we kind of grew into living at our means, living the Washington, D.C. area. Even with my wife being a physician and me having a pretty senior position at Accenture. We would spend every dime we have. So kind of the thought of jumping into corporate life kind of scared the hell out of me. To be honest, one of the things that really made it possible for me to become an entrepreneur was in 2012, we moved to Charlotte. My wife took a new job, the Charlotte Market for doctors, a lot better than D.C. so we kind of got a four for like double the salary and half the house price. So it was really life changing for my ability to kind of be able to take a chance as an entrepreneur.Adam (00:06:16) - When we moved down here, and it kind of gave me a second chance at it. I had some ups and downs in the SEO business when I had my first down in 2012, and that kind of was kind of the leading factor for me to move to Charlotte. I plan to get another job in the IT business, and the only thing that prevented me from doing that now is I had 15 years of telecom experience, and it's a banking town in Charlotte and no one really wanted me. So I was sitting at home with nothing to do. I figured I give SEO another punt, so that's kind of where it's at. But really what helped me is my wife was able to cover all the expenses. We went from having like a 4 or $5000 mortgage down to $1,000 a month down in Charlotte. And I really think that really having a manageable expenses is really super duper key in becoming an entrepreneur at first. And I really had to produce nothing other than my wife said it was deck and vacation money.Adam (00:07:15) - So I think that's really is something. I was super lucky about that a lot of other entrepreneurs don't have. a lot of my friends that sell on Amazon, even some that do it full time, they started doing both a full time job and like an Amazon side gig, and I was able to do the SEO business as a full time business. And then the Amazon business is a full time business.David (00:07:37) - Okay. So knowing what you know now, what advice would you give yourself at the beginning of that journey?Adam (00:07:44) - Really? Well, I think like the biggest, the biggest things are you have to if you want to be an entrepreneur, you have to keep your expenses reasonable and you have to be willing to take risk. And if you don't ...

The episode begins with Dr. Ritch, a minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon, describing her path into menopause care, including the development of her podcast, EnRitched Menopause. She touches on the role of laboratory workup in menopause, but emphasizes the patient's symptoms are more important to address than numerical values on labs. She then delves into treatment options, including the complexities of hormone replacement therapy, and the multifactorial nature of sexual function issues. Most importantly, the physicians emphasize listening to patients, offering comprehensive care beyond hormone therapy, and utilizing resources like podcasts to educate both practitioners and patients. Discovering Meredith Edgar is one of my best memories of 2023.   In Part 1 of this episode, get to know this singer/songwriter who was born in San Francisco. Her parents had been here a while, but soon after giving birth to Meredith, the family moved around a bit, first to the South, then to the Northeast, and finally, back to the South Bay.   "Silicon Valley" was vastly different than the other places Meredith spent her early life in. When her family moved there, she was in third grade and happy to be in a more diverse place. She ended up spending her middle and high school years in the South Bay, eventually spending more and more time in The City.   Music was always an integral part of Meredith's life. As she puts it, her parents have "eclectic taste in music." She says that there was always music playing—at home, in the car. Her dad also played guitar.   Meredith started playing violin at 4. Later, she joined her junior high choir. And by the time high school rolled around, she had started playing guitar, writing songs, and playing out. "Out" at that time meant open mics at Red Rock Coffee in Mountain View, and Meredith shares the story of her first time doing that. She says that she's deeply grateful to have found music, fast-forwarding to tell the story of her dog's passing away in late September of this year and how playing helped her grieve.   Then we go back again to her late-teen years. Meredith was ready to not be in the suburbs anymore. She and her friends came to SF to go to shows or go dancing at spots like Pop Scene (330 Ritch) and 1984 (Cat Club). When she made the leap north to live in The City, she didn't play out right away. But the South Bay band she was still a part of fizzled out.   When she first got here, she was in a bad relationship that also eventually ended. After that, Meredith's music picked back up. She worked at Macy's in cosmetics and shares a fun sidebar about kittens and puppies up for adoption over the holidays at the department store. Around 2007 or so, she picked up music yet again, writing, playing out, doing solo shows, playing originals and covers. She preferred to be solo because of her desire to be self-sufficient.   We end Part 1 with a chat about her siblings. Meredith's brother is six years younger than she is and is an artist here in The City. Her sister is a year older than her, but didn't grow up with the family. In fact, they didn't know about her until Meredith was 18. She says that they're good friends now.   Check back next week for Part 2 and a bonus episode of Meredith playing a few songs just for you.   Meredith's website Follow Meredith Edgar on Instagram   We recorded this episode at Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge in November 2023.

Newcomer Franklin Ritch joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss the making of his debut feature THE ARTIFICE GIRL. From learning his craft through acting in theater and making short films… to tackling the incredibly difficult subject matter of child predators and artificial intelligence with a minimal cast in an (almost) single location story for his first feature film… to the decision to cast himself as one of the main characters… to working with the great Lance Henriksen… to the delicate process of directing a child actor through heavy dialogue that deals with child abuse and futuristic technology… to shooting during the pandemic on a schedule that broke production up over a year and a half… THE ARTIFICE GIRL is a film that begs to be seen and Franklin is definitely a filmmaker to watch! The boys also discuss “intermissions” in films, have another brief geek-out over STAR WARS, and debate the pros and cons of bringing actors back from the dead to the silver screen.
