This podcast features a deep conversation with Tod Bolsinger, who emphasizes the vital importance of adaptive leadership in a rapidly changing world. He draws on his experience as a pastor and consultant to highlight how leaders must not only adapt their strategies but also transform themselves and their communities to thrive. Tod shares insights from his book, "Canoeing the Mountains," using the historical context of Lewis and Clark's expedition as a metaphor for navigating uncharted territory in leadership. Throughout the episode, he discusses the critical characteristics of effective leaders, including technical competence, relational congruence, and adaptive capacity, while providing practical advice on how to cultivate these traits. Listeners will gain valuable perspectives on fostering communal transformation and the courage required to embrace uncertainty as they lead their organizations through change.Takeaways: Leadership is about energizing a community towards transformation to accomplish a shared mission. Adaptive capacity is crucial as leaders face changing environments and shifting cultural contexts. Trust is essential for transformation, but it does not guarantee that transformation will occur. Best practices may not work in new contexts, requiring leaders to adapt and innovate. Relational congruence fosters trust, enabling leaders to effectively guide their communities through change. To lead effectively, one must discern core values and adapt them wisely in a changing world.

While I am familiar with the names of most park units due to my day job, I haven't had the chance to visit them all just yet. The first days of Robert Lester's ambitious canoe journey started with a lot of walking. That start was in Butte, Montana on Silver Bow Creek -- the starting point of a 1300-mile trip through the Columbia River basin to the Pacific Ocean.  Lester made the trip in a two seat canoe. He was joined by 18-year-old Braxton Mitchel, who'd never canoed beforehand.  That journey took 55 days and is the focus of a new documentary from Lester and director Neil Larson, titled “The Columbia River Canoe Project.” At its heart is a story about ambition – both from the canoers themselves, and humans who have drastically changed the river with massive projects like dams.  Canoer Robert Lester and director Neil Larson joined Soundside to talk about the project ahead of local screenings in West Seattle, Edmonds, and Bainbridge Island Nov. 22-24.  Guests: Robert Lester, canoer and focus of "The Columbia River Canoe Project." Neil Larson, director of "The Columbia River Canoe Project."  Find information about local showings here: Columbia River Canoe Project — Mountain King Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! This podcast episode covers all the details and preparations for a long solo trip in the Arctic that I'm starting today! After 30 hours of driving and a 2 hour bush plane flight to Nueltin Lake I'll be heading north of the treeline direct into the Barren Lands of the Arctic. Once there, I'll be completely alone and out of touch for 30 days. The only written description of the river is a few pages in a book written by a missionary in the late 1800's. The trip spans the Thlewiaza, The-Tinne, Kognak and Tha-Anne rivers and will probably include caribou and bear encounters, whitewater and giant ice-covered lakes, and insanely complex navigational challenges. Once the trip is underway, I'll be sharing a few photos from the field a small satellite device So if you're interested in adventure and how well jiu-jitsu works against giant Hudson Bay Polar Bears then follow along! The best place to stay current is probably on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/essentialwilderness/), although this page on Essential Wilderness (https://tinyurl.com/nunavutsolo) should have a map that updates with my location once I'm on the water  I believe that pictures from this trip will also get cross-posted on Threads (https://www.threads.net/@stephan_kesting) Tiktok (https://www.tiktok.com/@essentialwilderness), and  Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/@essentialwilderness/community) I'll be back to the world and jiu-jitsu in late July. Hopefully! Cheers, Stephan P.S. I'm telling my publisher that this is my official book tour, so if you haven't yet pre-ordered Perseverance, Life and Death in the Subarctic (the story of another trip I did up there) then please help me out! Thruhikers, Tim Beissinger and Renee Miller started dating in college and have always been active people. Tim grew up hiking and camping with his family, and Renee was a runner. The two dragged each other along on their respective outdoor outings. Eventually they worked their way up to thru-hiking, a sport that they've fallen in love with and built a life around.Connect with Renee & Tim: Website Instagram TikTokCheck out: REI's mission to get everyone Outside in 5 If you enjoyed this episode: Listen to Wild Ideas Worth Living with Cheryl StrayedThank you to our sponsors: Capital One: Check out the REI Co-op Mastercard program and learn about local REI Fund granteesNUUN
