Larry Roberts lives in Lewisville, Texas and he is a Business Intelligence Analyst, author of an Amazon #1 Bestseller, host of the Readily Random Podcast and owner of Readily Random Media. He is also a bit of a comedian and uses comedy to get his point across.  As expected, my conversation with Larry Roberts was random, and we covered a lot of topics, but we did pull out some golden nuggets along the way. High-Level Reporting As a Business Intelligence Analyst and collecting data, it's about knowing what is important before you deep dive. Of course, there is a discovery process, which helps identify what is valuable and there’s always room for improvement. When analysing data, it’s important to talk to the individuals that the process is going to impact the most. His First Business Venture His first business, which he ran alongside his day job, got too big too fast and he eventually had to decide to quit his day job or to sell the business. He still regrets the decision he made. There were a lot of takeaways from this experience: You don’t need to know everything before you get started. You do have to love what you’re doing more than the money that you make. He learnt how to start a business and how to run a business, but he never had an exit strategy when it mattered most, which is why he had to make a forced decision to keep his day job (career) or keep the business. Giving up your career is a risky option. Passion For What You Do It’s easy to tell if you’re passionate about what you’re doing, you’re always looking for ways to improve and get better, and you do it automatically.  Passionate people also engage a business coach or mentor to help guide them through the process of what it is they want to learn. A business coach and mentor speed up the learning process. Podcasting For Your Business We’re often asked if every business can benefit from a podcast and the answer is YES because a podcast can be whatever you want it to be. You need to share what you know. Larry gives a great example of ‘Larry The Landscaper’ and how his knowledge of landscaping may not appeal to the masses, and it won’t become the world’s greatest podcast, but it will appeal to a small niche of people, and that’s what you want. It’s realism as its best. Podcasting keeps you in the ear of your target audience and it’s one of the cheapest marketing tools you will ever use. Avoid Bad Courses You need to avoid paying for overpriced courses, run by people that do not have experience. Check their credentials and make sure they know what they’re talking about, and have they done what it is you want to learn.  Using Comedy Comedy is a tool, and it's an excellent way to break the ice with any crowd. There will always be that one person in the room that is a tough nut to crack, and if you can get them to laugh, you’ve got everyone. Comedy is a great way to get an important point across because laughter helps with retention. An audience will always remember a speaker that makes them laugh, but be warned, do not use canned jokes that do not fit the situation, it will make you look bad. Monday Morning Tip You control your happiness, even if you’re in a bad environment. You can choose to let a situation piss you off, or decide to look at it differently and therefore affect you differently. Simplifying the Equation of Podcasting Success... “When I started podcasting, I read so many different books and watched so many different videos that I ended up confused and overwhelmed to the point that I went out and bought equipment that I still haven't even used! It's outdated tech. Don't tell my wife. She still thinks I'm going to use it.” (Larry Roberts, author of 1+1 = Podcast & host of the Readily Random Podcast). NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO TRY PODCASTING. In his best-selling 2018 book, 1+1 = Podcast, Larry covers the podcasting basics in a clear non-technical, non-jargonal manner just like he was having a conversation with you. He ditches the stuffy Times New Roman font and presents answers for exactly what is needed to get started with a high-quality sounding, low cost or even FREE podcasting solution. WHY IS THIS BOOK BETTER THAN OTHERS? Podcasting books are convergent, technical, preachy and also prescriptive of the elusive “way” to be a “star” podcaster. Don't fall for the hype. Instead, Larry shows you how to conduct reconnaissance of the podcast landscape and pauses with introspective questions that identify your “comfort zone” as you enter this exciting territory rife with open, unexplored spaces. Remember, podcasting has only been around for less than a decade! Let's be honest, podcasting involves work - but at the same time It's empowering, it's talk therapy, and it's not constrained by advertisers and regulators. Don't go bananas on the Internet, but a podcaster can do things a mainstream reporter would never be allowed to do! IT'S ACTUALLY EASY TO FIND INTERESTING GUESTS. Podcasts with guests typically outperform shows that don't have guests. David recalls his newbie podcaster days of asking friends, neighbors and coworkers to be on his show. It was harder to find unfamiliar guests. Larry acknowledges and solves the “guest barrier” in his book by demonstrating a svelte technique of searching for authors that sell their publications on Amazon. Hey, have a cool topic you want to talk about? In a few clicks, you can discover authors on Amazon that have published books in that genre - and most of those folks post bios and links to their related works - awesome! Larry's book even has a concise template narrative you can use to invite a guest to be on your show. PROMOTING YOUR SHOW. Analytics matter, but it also takes time and episodes for listeners to get to know you and your show. Focus on promoting your show. An awesome episode might be downloaded 15 times if you only shared it one time at night on Twitter. Right? Larry helps David consider options for expanding his show's presence on social media platforms while being vigilant of personal privacy. How do you foster a well-rounded social media campaign to promote your show? Larry answers that question during this episode. TECHNOLOGY TAKES TIME. I began my podcast with my webcam's built-in microphone. My audio quality took a leap when I purchased a USB microphone - and crept into the professional tier with an XLR microphone. USB/XLR/GAIN = intimidating. It can be - and Larry removes the anxiety as he makes a few terrific suggestions for easy-to-learn hardware and software that won't fry your budget. David and Larry concurred that persons new to podcasting might assume that good audio is magically rendered in post-production. In other words, as long as you get “any” recording, you can “fix” it with software. That's a myth. Start by following Larry's advice and you won't end up scrapping your first round of shows due to avoidable technical flaws. FOLLOW DR. The Safety Doc Podcast
Comedy After Tragedy? Larry Roberts & David Perrodin

The Safety Doc Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 22, 2017 117:25

Tragedy obliterates comedy and lays a jagged landscape for podcasters to navigate as shows are judged in the context of the moment and not the context of the moment they were recorded. A misinterpreted posting of a show can become a viral social media wrecking ball. Readily Random's Larry Roberts and The Safety Doc David Perrodin dissect the awkward dance of tragedy and comedy in the podcasting medium and how to lessen one's chances of appearing insensitive to events that beg the question, "How can you laugh at a time like this?" UNLUCKY TIMING & HORRIFIC CONTEXT. Hours before the October 1, 2017 Las Vegas shooting that claimed 59 lives and injured hundreds, Dr. Perrodin released a podcast interview of Katie Pechon of Cajun Navy Relief. The show's keel was the goodness that unites Americans in times of tragedy (per natural disasters). Suddenly, this positive, uplifting show was seemingly misplaced in the shattered landscape of contemporary America digesting the new “record” of murders by a gunman. Dr. Perrodin recalled that roughly a week after the 9/11/01 attacks, America's top comedians delivered a special tribute comedy show that they collectively prefaced by admitting their native craft felt awkward to demonstrate in such a twisted, smoldering aftermath that ended thousands of lives. Yet, comedy is human – and humanity is giving and caring and sharing and knowing that laughter isn't a tarp over pain, but perhaps a temporary diversion or a way to arrange thoughts to a perspective that helps restore a torus, or sense or a ‘new' “normal” to one's life. PROMOTING A POSITIVE STORY HOURS AFTER THE VEGAS SHOOTING – HOW? Larry suggested that shows released proximal to sentinel tragedies could be edited to include a brief acknowledgement of the event. In some instances, he notes that it might be best just to bury the episode. David admitted that he throttled back his promotion of the Cajun Navy interview after the Vegas shooting – a decision he grapples with to this day. WHY GUESTS LAUGH WHEN PRESENTING TRAGIC PERSONAL STORIES? It's bio science. Researchers have found there is some evidence that strong negative feelings may provoke positive expressions; for example nervous laughter appears when people are confronted with a difficult or frightening situation, and smiles have been found by other psychologists to occur during extreme sadness. Larry Roberts shared how some of his guests who have recovered from drug addictions and horrible life events inject laughter or humor into their narratives. From a surface analysis, this might give the incorrect impression that the person is not serious about their story. In fact, the oddly-placed laughter is evidence that the person is anxious and seeking a way to feel more comfortable about expressing tragic thoughts.
