Dr. Earnshaw's creative writing process look like when writing this book -He first jots down his thoughts and ideas on paper, then he uses Microsoft word to put his written words into an electronic format which enables him to restructure, and arrange the information chronologically acceptable, which translate into a book. You may wonder how Dr. Earnshaw solves any creative challenges he comes across. He recommends: Stimulating or studying or thinking about a problem in-depth for at least an hour, a maximum of two hours, and then let it go and then going for a walk. You will find while you're walking, all sorts of ideas, pop into your mind. Diego grew up in Bogota Colombia, has lived in France, Italy, and South America. His experience of feeling like an outsider in these countries has enabled him to gain a level of understanding and empathy for users, making him a great interaction designer. How does the creative process of an interaction designer look like? Diego speaks a number of languages and as a result, he is always translating from one language to the other depending on which part of the world he is in. It's the same when it comes to work. Whenever he gets a request for a screen to do X or an App must do Y, he is able to translate those into things ordinary users can see, touch and interact with. Therefore making interaction designers -interpreters. According to Diego, it's not just about the interactivity of an app or screen or process but a lot to do with the flow of that experience, keeping in mind that as human beings, we are interrupted a lot in the middle of what we are doing, so interactive designers make sure that whatever your interruption, the user is able to continue flawlessly with the process. Collaboration is critical for an interactive designer because of the different teams that come together to create the final product. For it to be successful, communication is at the core. Communication is not just within the company but also you need to communicate heavily with the users/customer. Although there is a lot of market research you can find on the internet, you must bring in the human aspects of this research. This means bringing your potential users onboard and getting their feedback. Human communication. After three decades at Idaho's leading news organization, KTVB News anchor and journalist Mark Johnson is retiring from television broadcasting. In his storied career, he's been the face of Idaho news on KTVB's top-rated evening and late newscasts and a champion for countless community nonprofit organizations. He's covered a Super Bowl, a World Series, Fiesta Bowls, NCAA basketball tournaments, and five Olympic games, winning a national Edward R. Murrow award for his work involving the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics. Johnson became something of a national sensation earlier this year when he updated his bio and the station released a tweet with no information other than his name, picture, and a link to the bio. The mysterious Tweet spawned online memes, one showing two pictures of Johnson claiming he created the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine. Stephen Colbert noted the sensation on his Late Night show in April, showing a doctored picture of Harry Truman holding up a copy of the Chicago Tribune with the headline “Mark Johnson.” A constant in the lives of generations of Idaho families, Mark Johnson has watched 30 years of Idaho history unfold from his spot in the KTVB studio. We're going all the way over to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, some of you may know it as Saigon. He's been around the world and he expresses a world of creativity in his own work, in his own travels. Boris was born in Russia and is now living in Saigon and in between, he's traveled to over 20 countries, where he's lived and worked. Boris began his travels back in 2014 when he got a scholarship to travel as an exchange student to the US. While there, Boris got a 3 months job in Idaho Sun Valley, and in between work, he visited the city of Boise, which he found to be absolutely beautiful. When his 3 months work was done, he moved to Los Angeles Hollywood to pursue his film-making dream. A year later, when that didn't work Boris returned home to Russia. According to Boris, when traveling, don't travel alone. So Boris and his girlfriend made the decision to hitchhike across Europe where they slept in tents during their visit to 20 countries, 6 months later, Boris still had this deep desire to travel, he decided to travel east to China, before getting to Vietnam. After 3 years of living in China and teaching English as an expatriate, Boris made his way to Vietnam. Two years later, he shares with us lessons he has learned in pursuing his journey of film making and his progress in making his movie Saigon 3000. Vietnam's growth over the past decade and a half have made it an excellent country for the film industry due to an increased number of film studios and production companies. The lifestyle, reduced competition, and less bureaucracy make it easier to break into the film business compared to Hollywood. Making connections as a foreigner wasn't easy, however, by sharing his ideas about the movie he wanted to make with everyone he met, before long people in the industry started reaching out to him. Boris tells us about his experience pitching his film and how he has to incorporate feedback into making this film. For success in the film industry, Boris says it is about your network, who you know. The key in filmmaking is quality and to find good quality, you require teamwork and collaboration. Nazlı Tarcan is a Turkish children's book and editorial illustrator who focuses on nostalgia, vibrant memories, and playful moments. She will tell us how she creates her work, what inspires her, how she organizes these ideas, and how she's gained the confidence and the connections to launch her work out into the world. Born in Istanbul Turkey, Nazli began drawing as early as age 3. She started learning Art while at high school in In Istasyon Art Academy, after which she went to Yıldız Technical University to study Media Arts (Photography & Video) because she thought she wanted to be a National Geographic photographer. While doing that, she was shooting her products in front of a white screen which was no fun. She wasn't feeling fulfilled and just before graduation, she left to join the circus. While with the circus, she did numerous art/graphic projects during her active years and illustrated a book entitled "https://www.hoopsparx.com/shop/product/loopy-luna/ (Loopy Luna and the Hula Hoop)". 9 years into traveling across the world with the circus, Nazli decided she wanted to learn pedagogy, and enrolled at Cirkus in Beweging -which translates to Moving circus- in Leuven, Belgium. At this art school, she studied for 1 year interacting, playing, and teaching kids, before Covid hit. Since nothing was working, she moved to Namur, where she fully focused on illustrating books for children. Nazli's illustrative style is very playful, vibrant, and colorful. This came about from years of trying to imitate other artists' styles and deciding what felt right to her and what didn't. She let her own mind lead her to choose the colors that worked in her illustrations despite them not being conventional as if controlled by a secret power. When it comes to her creative process of starting a commissioned project, Nazli will work on sketches then share them with other artists so as to get different opinions. She never shies away from working with others. She will bring in the aspects of colors that she lets her emotions guide her on what to use. Afterward, she begins to play with different mediums and chooses the best one to illustrate the idea. What happens when Nazli is feeling stuck in her creativity? She will take a break from what she is currently working on, maybe listen to music, look at her favorite illustrations for inspiration or even juggle. Yes, JUGGLING! Such that when she sits down to try again, she will start at where she feels happiest, whether it's drawing human faces, or playing with colors In conclusion, Nazli is not only an illustrator but also uses digital art to complete her creations. It took some struggle and two career changes before Mark Ryall discovered his “genuine self” as a teacher. He had always yearned for a career that brought him closer to people, and teaching became the natural place for him. He went on to teach economics and mathematics at Royal St. George's College (Toronto) and Hillfield Strathallan College (Hamilton) for a combined twenty-four years. He also loved coaching cross country running, a sport which he felt makes students stronger mentally and physically, and which promotes teamwork and mutual support. While teaching, he also began painting, specializing in acrylic art depicting historic old buildings and bridges in the Hamilton area, and more recently dabbling in sports portraits and landscapes. The speculative fiction Age-Decoded is Mark's first novel. He wrote the first draft about ten years ago while he was teaching, to educate himself and the world about the imminent tsunami of genetic engineering technology. The novel was turned down by traditional publishers, so Mark accepted that rejection and let the novel sit for several years. But with his recent retirement from teaching and the full-blown emergence of CRISPR-like technology on the scientific front, he decided to work hard to update and improve the novel. He finally self-published it two months ago. Mark feels Age-Decoded is important because genetic engineering will impact human physical and psychological traits − fundamentally affecting what it means to be human. His goal is to educate people about this scientific breakthrough. Many effects will be hugely positive, as scientists work to eradicate diseases such as Alzheimer's, Huntington's, cystic fibrosis, HIV, sickle cell anemia, and even cancer. But unintended or intended negative effects are also possible with this technology. The story peers 100-200 years into the future, allowing the reader to critically imagine and feel the potential impact of genetic engineering on human nature. The story focuses on two human changes; one physical (stopping and reversing aging) and one psychological (spoiler alert: you will need to read the novel). Mark also competes in triathlons and represented Canada in the 2019 World Age-Group Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland. That race was a disaster as he never completed the swim due to “technical difficulties”! But he has vowed to redeem himself, to qualify and compete once again in the Championships sometime soon in the post-Covid era. She has actually launched her own platform which we'll know more about in this episode. She also loved traveling and it was there that she discovered many local artisans from the places she visited and found her passion in helpìng them. She discovered that there were art forms that she wouldn't have found on Google. And that's how she decided to launch a platform to help these artisans keep their art form alive. She decided to empower independent artisans by providing them with resources but also selling their products in a regular store format. Collecting the works Meghana tells us that she made a scheduled list of 10 people and went on various travels and meet 10 people from 10 different countries. She talked to them about her idea for the platform. She kept in touch with them and keep the idea going and growing along. She built a relationship with them and then told them when the platform was ready to go. So the site was launched and it started as a typical e-commerce shop with the big difference that the products weren't mass-produced. Each piece was limited edition, and sometimes the artisans even changed the form of art they were selling. And we're going to talk about how he's working with this program for people who are experiencing homelessness in LA. And we also want to talk about his work, Roman, we want to talk about your projects and also some of the things that you're working on to support these unhoused artists. So we've got a lot to cover in our short time together, but we're going to get through it all. Prioritizing workRoman jokingly thinks having ADHD is a driver for him, when he's interested in something it's very easy for him to channel a lot of energy and passion towards that particular thing. And seeing that he has a diverse scope of projects and goals like contributing to the world, for him it helps if he hits a wall in one pursuit or maybe there's just a delay in something that he's working on, for Roman, it's very easy to shift over to the next one and to the next one. So each goal develops at its own pace. His passion project: Unhoused Arts Initiative Roman tells the story of how he started working with the union rescue mission, which is one of the largest missions on skid row in Los Angeles, serving the unhoused population. He tells of how he wanted to help artists who don't have access to supplies or storage for their artwork, create art that communicated some of their experience. And after going without a real expectation of how it was going to go. Roman had an idea to bring gallery-quality supplies into a situation where there may be artists who want to create something, and to give them the space and the time and the attention to do that, then maybe it will yield beautiful results. Unhoused Arts initiativeRoman thinks that the interesting impact of the initiative frames this space that way because when you give people the opportunity to say what they want to say, you're really just providing an opportunity for them to be listened to. He believes that the unhoused population has so much to say that they're always sharing it with people and that the people that provide services for them sometimes start to tune that out, out of necessity for the volume that they go through. Roman tries to provide his full focused attention and just tries to hear what they had to say. The mindset, from artist and educator to gallery managerRoman tells us about the challenges in working with unhoused artists. One of which is you don't have an address to locate them by or a consistent phone number. Roman says they're not in a state of mind to even remember that they made the art and often times many of them will get up after the session and just walk out into the streets. So some of the artists you will lose complete track of after you've worked with them. Roman explains about being a manager for these artists, how there's really no way to control that force of nature in that situation, that the best that he could do is report everybody's name who came in and record the story they shared with him while they were working on the art. So for Roman, it was about cataloging that information and, and keeping it somewhere safe cause everything just happened in a brief moment. Roman's next steps...Roman goes on to explain that for the Unhoused Arts the next step is to do a personal fundraiser to get a high-quality art book made of the art that was lost so that they can at least show people what there was. Now let's hear the story of the song's writer: Alex Call On today's episode, we'll hear about his songwriting process for Jenny – and his live acoustic performance of 867-5309, plus three other hits that made the Billboard Hot 100 Power of Love and Perfect World, (written for Huey Lewis and the News) And Mr. Moon by Elvis Costello Alex Call has been a hit recording artist and songwriter for over thirty years. His muse is legendary in the industry, and his songs have become musical icons of American pop culture. I met Alex at a small café several years ago, and had the chance to record our conversation. He shared highlights of his career as told in his book, “867-5309: The Song That Saved Me.” I didn't know then that I'd have a podcast on the creative process, so I feel fortunate to have captured this story. His latest film is currently out on Amazon Prime called The Golden Age: The Life and Times of Maya O'Malley. The soundtrack, also written, performed, and produced by Connor, is available on all streaming platforms, with a double vinyl album. THE GOLDEN AGE, a musical rockumentary shot over a decade in California and India, introduces us to the character of subversive pop star Maya O'Malley who, after a string of controversial remarks, gets dropped from his music label and sets out on a spiritual pilgrimage throughout India in an attempt to resolve his troubled past. Winner of the Audience Award at the AWARENESS FILM FESTIVAL and winner of the Best Performance Award at the NEW HAMPSHIRE FILM FESTIVAL, Connor is also releasing A DAY IN THE LIES, a memoir novel that delves deeper into the life of the film's main protagonist, Maya O'Malley, which will be released on Amazon later this Summer. Justin Connor currently lives in Los Angeles, and splits time between music and painting, and prepping the release of his third album, MATERIAL LIFE. Justin says that he started as an actor but then veered towards music, released an album, and then for this second album as he was trying to figure out how to adjoin writing and directing a film that intertwined music without relying on lip-syncing. He wanted songs that helped tell the story in an organic way. He was also watching a lot of documentaries at that time and decided to play with the ideas of what's real and what's fake. The character of Maya is born in these moments, he wanted to have a more substantive dialogue on the permutations of fame and pop culture and substantive songwriting. Something similar to Bob Dylan and Roger Waters did. He wanted to tell a story that was partially autobiographical about his own past. The whole document ends up being a comedy, but a comedy that also is supported on reality. It's a satire about material life, documentaries of artists and how artists are broken. He tried to approach the story with sincerity. The form of the documentary proved to be challenging because you play a little trick by satirizing. The Filmmaking Process The process of making a film such as this along with music and the collaboration of a team Justin also said that it was a healing exercise for him. As a survivor of abuse, Justin says that there is an immense amount of shame that people end up struggling with. Those wounds don't necessarily go away per se but people eventually learn to bridge a different connection with them. Justin got to really challenge himself while making this film. Justin also talks about how sometimes the stories that stayed with him after going through a dysfunctional household also make him feel that he had to heal from them like it was a mandatory thing. Which is something that he also wanted to reflect on in this documentary. Victims can heal and grow, just on their own terms and time. Currently, Justin is also finishing a book that will accompany the film and will go even deeper into it. He hopes that this story can help others heal. So this whole process has helped Justin heal a lot and come to terms with his wounds. This is why in part the film took so long before he was really wrapped in this and now in the end phase he feels like he is finally starting his life over. His multiple roles in filmmaking Justin is the creator, director, and actor in this film. He also made music for it and a book. Our guest: Katie Leimkuehler Katie Leimkuehler is an executive producer of the documentary https://vimeo.com/347182248 (FRESH TRACKS), Senior Manager, and Social Media Coach at Charles Schwab, and the Executive coach for Leimkuehler Media. She is a well-rounded creative person who is not only a social media expert but also a brand consultant. Her creative engine Katie has always liked to learn new things and there is usually a point where you've learned as much as you can in a given field, so when she gets to that point she liked to hop on to another project of field and start learning something new. She gets the most joy from the act of creating something, not so much the final product but the actual part of starting from scratch and putting the pieces together to make an idea come to life. Background on her documentary story "Fresh Tracks" is a story inspired by her grandfather who was essentially the first amputee skier in the US. He lost his leg during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge, and came back to Cleveland, Ohio, started a prosthetic business, and wanted to get back into sports. And that's when he discovered skiing and design this device called the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outrigger_ski (Outrigger), which is a ski pole with a mini ski attached to the end that helps for balance. He decided not to patent it so other people could have access to it. Fresh Tracks follows his story of designing the device and turning tragedy into triumph by giving adaptive athletes and paralympic athletes today the device they are using today. Katie originally wanted to write a screenplay but decided against it since she wanted to have more creative control. Choosing to tell her grandfather's story wasn't too hard either since it was something she grew up around and inspired her to think that if he could do it, so could she. Which is the mindset she looks to convey with her film, to spread positivity and empowerment even in these dark moments. Katie believes that dark moments in our life do not define us but rather how we pick up from those moments and what we do next. Lessons learned along the way Katie didn't have a background in film so she had to talk to as many filmmakers and producers as she could first. Everyone had a different process, but it gave her an insight into how to start and find the path that worked best for her. She learned that there is not a formula to make a documentary and that it can sometimes be overwhelming when you're not sure of the path forward. She interviewed a lot of people, watched similar documentaries, and started to reach out to production companies that produced said films. That's how she ran into the TFA Group with whom she partnered for the documentary. The reaction So far, the sports community has received her documentary in a great way. She has gotten only positive feedback and a lot of people are just learning the story which is really interesting for them. Jodi Krangle, Voiceover, Podcaster, and Clubhouse Host Jodi is a voiceover actress, singer, and the host of a great podcast called Audio Branding -- as well as a host of a Clubhouse Room called The Power of Sound. Creative process Jodi talks about her creative process and starts by telling Mark that it is different for everyone. It may also depend on what your coaching has been, so if you have a career in voiceover, you likely have had some kind of coaching. In each coaching, you will be given different ways to get into the right headspace for acting. You need to be able to perform the script you are given. It is a performance, an actual conversation. So even if someone gives her a really sales-heavy script, she is still able to talk about it as if it was a simple conversation, especially because she s answering real questions customers may have. To get into her acting creative headspace, Jodi says she also needs to know which music they will be using and the emotional context of the piece. So basically, context plays a very important role in voice actors being able to perform adequately the lines that they were given. Trends in Audio Branding Space Jodi tells Mark about how more and more people are paying attention to what it actually is. So, Audio Branding, which is similar to Sonic Branding. they call it a brand sound that represents the identity and values of a brand in a distinctive manner. The audio logo branded functional sounds, brand music, or the brand voice are characteristic elements of audio branding. So it's a bunch of different things that are all working together to make an audio identity for a company and to let people who hear it, understand who that company is viscerally deeply, emotionally on really quickly, actually. So for instance, appliances have different sounds and people use different music on their on-hold and they have a different voice for their commercials that, you know, approximates their brand values. So most sound companies are looking to appeal to their target audience so they opt to have a signature voice. What this achieves is that customers are able to hear just seconds of a voice that they recognize and associate with the company. Her success Jodi credits her success to being able to track what goes in and comes out. Having an online invoicing system has been huge for her, apps like Zoho and QuickBooks are very much the easiest way to present clients with a professional invoice. So keeping track of everything is monumental to keep your business growing horrible. What makes a great client A good relationship with clear communication is the key here. They need to understand that they are paying for a professional service, they are hiring a professional and paying for such experience. Communicating expectations from the start is also big for the voiceover actress to be able to do a good job. The road ahead Currently, Jodi is not sure which direction she may take in the future but she does know that she likes where she is right now, she doesn't want to limit herself and is open to whatever happens in the next years. She believes that there's also a bit of the ability to also receive inspiration that allows her to do this. She talks about human beings are very spiritual beings, as in, they have a high level of consciousness and that they express in a creative way. A lot of being creative falls on using your imagination, and this is where Kiki says she is most talented. Experiences are data Kiki feels how experiences help you collect data and the more you analyze said data, you are more likely to be able to predict future behavior. And nowadays, people who are working 9-to-5 jobs may also have creative dreams outside the company but what about those who have dreams within the companies? So what can either of those persons do in order to accomplish them? Kiki tells us that digging, cleaning, organizing, and making meaningful connections is a great start. Another important factor is letting go of the judgment towards your past, so people see what they've experienced, and when they find meaning to it, they are able to contemplate their new creative space without judgment. Our guest: Salisha Thomas Salisha Thomas is an actress known for being in the cast of "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" on Broadway. She was also Miss California World. Salisha helped launch the musical's tour back in 2015, she got into the show the same week she had just moved to New York City which was amazing to her. She toured with the show for two years and she fell even more in love with the show and the team. She loved working in the musical. Salisha then chose to leave the tour to give New York a chance because living there was what she always wanted. Her creativity, focus, and process Salisha talks about how her process has changed over the years, she continues to learn and approaches her character with the mindset of how the character fits into who she is rather than how she can fit into the character. It is a little different when you're portraying somebody who is a real-life breathing person who exists in the world, whether they're alive or dead or passed on. She tries to make it as authentic and truthful as she can by thinking who she is in their shoes. Part of her story includes a homeless man telling her that she needed to move to New York. She didn't necessarily listen to everything the man said but she knows that it was part of her journey. And she recognizes that if she hadn't moved to New York, she wouldn't have started her journey. And if you as an author find a way to do so, do it. If you find a niche as an author jump on it quickly and write and publish as much as you can. Try to get published by a “real” publisher and not just publish yourself. If you're starting you can check some forums where publishers may go through contests. If you really want to make it big you need to find a publisher that likes your idea and put money into it, market it, sell it, make a profit from it, and come back and ask you to do another one. Back when he was starting, Jake says he pretty much took anything that was thrown at him, he did Jasmine St. Claire who was an adult star in the nineties. Don't do it just for the money In 2004 he did his second published book and it was about R. Kelly. He admits that he only did it because he needed the money. Writing about R. Kelly was not easy for Jake and he was even asked to change some of the things in the introduction, changes that were demanded in order to water down the version Jake had written. But Jake needed the book to sell so when the situation wasn't the same as for the previous book so when it came out he distanced himself from it. About building a writing career Jake talks about how you must take chances when building your writing career, especially in the music industry. It is one of the toughest businesses to get into. But in the end, the opportunity that is actually life-changing will come and open many doors for you. In your career as an author you may not always do things the best way or maybe pick the wrong client but regardless the opportunity presented and previous experience will be key for you to make the right decisions and establish yourself as a prolific music author. How he got there Christian came to the industry almost by accident. He started by working on concert promotions to pay his way through college. He got to work with Grammy Award-winning artists such as Lady Gaga, Pitbull and T-Pain. Along the way, he was approached by an experimental marketing agency that was looking for some help with more street-type activation strategies. For Christian, it was a very natural transition from doing concert promotions and working with sponsors into that experiential marketing. Lessons learned along the way Along the way, when the 2008 recession hit, Christian learned the hard way that promoting his agency through just word of mouth was not enough.
