Episode #549: From MS-DOS to Vibe Coding: How Non-Technical Founders Build Complex Software

Stewart Alsop sat down with Michael Shackelford to discuss their experiences building applications through vibe coding—the practice of using AI to create software without traditional programming expertise. Stewart, who runs the AI Whispers community in Buenos Aires and hosts the Crazy Wisdom podcast (with over 660 interviews), shared how he went from teaching people prompt engineering to building his own video conferencing software as a Riverside.fm replacement, while Michael opened up about his year-long journey creating Genrupt Inc, an AI-powered content generation tool for e-commerce sellers. The conversation covered everything from the decline in quality of Claude's reasoning capabilities and how Chinese companies used distillation attacks to copy Anthropic's models, to the importance of spaced repetition systems for managing knowledge in the age of LLMs, with both sharing battle-tested prompting strategies like asking AI to "explain it to me in genius terms" and using deep research queries to reverse engineer how competitors build their products.Show Notes:- Dan Martell's book "Buy Back Your Time" was mentioned as one of the best business books for thinking about life and business- Check out John Vervaeke's "Awakening from the Meaning Crisis" for understanding relevance realization and why AI fundamentally cannot determine what's relevant to humans without being toldTimestamps00:00 Michael discusses being exhausted from getting his app ready for launch, working nonstop with AI to prepare landing page for podcast traffic driving beta signups05:00 Stewart explains starting AI Whispers in Buenos Aires after leaving OpenAI vendor company, meeting early adopters like Torin who was building mind-reading EEG technology10:00 Discussion of how corporations resist AI adoption due to political games and job security fears while some companies use AI as excuse for pandemic-era layoffs15:00 Stewart describes teaching workshops on using LLMs as linguistic tools rather than coding tools, noting technical people often lack humanities background needed for prompting20:00 Explaining chatbot wrappers, API calls, and how Anthropic's reasoning quality declined after Chinese distillation attacks copied their secret sauce developed with philosophers25:00 Technical discussion of model training, fine-tuning versus RAG for new information, and different approaches to updating AI knowledge beyond initial training30:00 Stewart describes building podcast recording software to replace expensive Riverside, struggling with syncing audio and video files across different computer clocks35:00 Discussion of critical factors in vibe coding, discovering unknown technical requirements, and how AIs don't automatically reveal missing information40:00 Stewart's reverse engineering process using deep research function to study competitors' hiring and technology stacks, separating planning agents from coding agents45:00 Prompting techniques including "explain like I know everything" and using spaced repetition systems to capture valuable prompts and technical knowledge50:00 Michael explains his Generux app for generating ecommerce content using Amazon review data analysis to inform high-converting listing images and videos55:00 Discussion of founder mentality involving self-delusion about project timelines, Michael working nine-plus hours daily for nine months on app development60:00 Comparing Amazon's expert software to prosumer software approach, discussing distribution challenges and future robotics applications for customized products65:00 Stewart demonstrates spaced repetition app for memory improvement and knowledge retention, explaining relevance realization problem that AI agents cannot solve without embodimentKey Insights1. Stewart Alsop started AI Whisperers in Buenos Aires after leaving his role at Invisible Technologies, which was OpenAI's largest vendor for RLHF work. He noticed that machine learning engineers at tech companies lacked the humanities background needed to properly interact with large language models, which are fundamentally linguistic tools. This led him to create weekly workshops teaching non-technical people how to use AI effectively, running events every Thursday for two years straight. The group attracted intense geeks from the start and eventually led to Stewart speaking right after Vitalik Buterin at DevConnect, marking a significant milestone for the community.2. Large corporations are resistant to AI adoption due to multiple factors including political dynamics within organizations and employees fearing job loss. Many companies that grew during the pandemic are now using AI as an excuse to downsize when the real issue is inefficiency from rapid expansion. Stewart observed that even technical people in machine learning often don't understand how to properly use AI tools because they lack linguistic and humanities training. The fundamental problem is educational, requiring companies to train people how to use these new tools while those same people resist learning them.3. Vibe coding has evolved significantly with Claude Code being a game changer that reduced the technical barrier to entry. Before Claude Code, developers needed substantial technical knowledge to work through constant doom loops and debugging cycles. The success of coding AI tools stems from thirty years of testing infrastructure that provides clear yes or no feedback on whether code works. This infrastructure doesn't exist in the same way for manufacturing, science, and other fields, which is why software became the dominant area for AI assistance initially.4. Claude's quality degradation over recent months resulted from multiple factors including distillation attacks by Chinese companies who reverse engineered Anthropic's reasoning capabilities. Anthropic had hired philosophers, sociologists, and psychologists to develop exceptional reasoning in Claude 4.5, but this was expensive to run. When Chinese models like Kimi copied these capabilities at one tenth the cost, and when mainstream users flooded the platform before Anthropic's planned IPO, the company had to reduce quality to manage computational costs. This represents a significant loss for power users who relied on Claude's superior reasoning abilities.5. Stewart built a podcast recording application to replace Riverside because he needed API access to automate workflows, which Riverside wanted one thousand dollars monthly to provide. The technical challenge involves syncing audio and video from local recordings on multiple computers with different clocks through a server, then merging them so voices match lip movements. This problem requires understanding complex timing issues across different network conditions and file formats. Stewart has been working through AI psychosis for months on this FFMPEG pipeline problem, illustrating how vibe coding still requires building intuition about technical problems even without traditional coding knowledge.6. The transition from expert software to prosumer software represents a major opportunity for AI-enabled tools. Expert software like Photoshop, Blender, and terminal interfaces have extreme complexity that intimidates beginners, but AI is making these capabilities accessible through natural language. The reign of specialists is ending as generalists with broad knowledge and curiosity can now build complete applications by leveraging AI to fill technical gaps. This shift particularly benefits entrepreneurs and founders who specialize in getting into difficult situations and figuring them out, even when they originally thought tasks would be easier than they turned out to be.7. Building applications with AI requires accepting massive time investments beyond initial estimates and developing strategies for overcoming knowledge gaps. Michael estimated his ecommerce content generation app would take months but spent nearly a year working over nine hours daily, while Stewart spent months solving audio-video sync issues. Success requires using tools like deep research to understand how competitors solve problems, maintaining separate planning and coding agents, and learning to ask the right questions. The key insight is that vibe coders can achieve ninety percent of functionality independently, but the final ten percent often requires understanding specific technical concepts that AI cannot intuit without proper context and domain knowledge.

So many people need remote recording for co-hosts and guests. Yet in the 20+ years of podcasting once we get a solid solution, they upgrade the software and we're back to always having a backup "Just in case." So I reached out to my audience to see what they used and they chimed in.The HistoryBlog Talk Radio (now gone) was an EASY choice but sounded like the phone. There was Skype (also gone), but everyone needed an account, and for the technically challenged, it was intimidating. Squadcast came on with a winning strategy with a firm understanding of what podcasters needed. Make it simple. Make it reliable. Then Video Entered the PictureThen tools like Squadcast added video, and while I never had an issue I know people who spoke of "Drift" where the audio didn't line up with the video (making it look like a bad Godzilla movie). There are tools like Evmux (browser based), Ecamm (Mac Only), Descript (browser based), and Streamyard (brwoser based).Text Based EditingWhen Descript entered the picture with text based editing (you edit the transcript, and it edits the audio) it became impressive after a few years. They purchased Squadcast, but haven't implemented all the tech from Squadcast (like being able to schedule a future episode in their "Rooms.").All in One SolutionsThis is one of the symptoms of a "All in one" solution. They do most things about 75%, but the details in that last 25 is what makes the difference. Riverisde started as remote recording, added text based editing, clip generation, and recently podcast hosting (the podcast hosting is very basic see video as of May 2026).It May Not Be All Riverside's FaultI wrote a blog post about all the things podcasters could do to be ready to make great recordings with Riverside. If you want Riverside to work, don't overcomplicate it:Solid internetUpdated browserDecent computerEnough disk spaceDon't rush the uploadThat's it.Do those things, and suddenly Riverside becomes “magically reliable.”What I Use For Live Streaming and RecordingBefore moving to a Mac computer, I use Streamyard, and loved it. When I got a Mac Mini, I switched to Ecamm. It's amazing and much you have more control over how things look. If you have a Streamdeck, you can do some pretty magical things. Worth that said, I'm considering going back to Streamyard even though it's $5 more a month (I used Ecamm for making recording for the School of Podcasting, but I now do those in Tella). What is The Most Reliable? For me, after talking with the School of Podcasting members and now hearing from the audience I would say Ecamm (mac only) and Streamyard (browser based). That doesn't mean Riverside, Evmux, Squadcast are not reliable, but I feel Ecamm and Streamyard are more reliable. They also are primarily focused on one thing RECORDING (although streamyard just added clip generation). So What If I Don't Want an All In One?Then you record with something like Ecamm or Streamyard, if you need clips, there is Opus Clip. There is free video software like Davinci Resolve, and free audio editing like Audacity. Thanks to The ContributorsFrank Bravo From Your Tech MakeoverTodd the Gator from Gaurdian DowncastChris From Cool Cars with ChrisEd from the Days Dumpster FireTim from My Solo MS JourneyMentioned In This EpisodeStreamyardEcammRiversideDescriptEvMuxCleanfeedZencastrOBS ProjectVDO NinjaPodtrack P4NextZoom H6Samson Q2U MicrophoneOpus ClipBoomer BunkerWar Room Online JournalTakeaways:Remote recording can be a total pain if you don't have solid internet; trust me, I know.Zoom works great for audio-only shows but struggles with video quality when the internet hiccups.Streamyard's simplicity makes remote recording a breeze; just send a link and boom, done!Clean Feed is solid for high-quality audio, especially for those who want to keep it simple. For video, Riverside sounds fancy but can be hit or miss; make sure it meets your needs first.Discord is free and surprisingly powerful for remote recordings, even if you're not a gamer.Mentioned in this episode:Live AppearancesI will be at the Empower Podcasting Conference (Year 3!) in Charlotte North Carolina. Harry Duran, founder of Fullcast and creator of Podisphere, joins Jeff Mains to explore what it really takes to build a sustainable podcast, grow a content brand, and stay ahead in a rapidly AI-shaped media world.Harry shares his journey from corporate marketing at JPMorgan Chase and E-Trade, to launching his first podcast Podcast Junkies in 2014, to building Fullcast — a podcast production and marketing consultancy that has helped over 130 business owners launch and grow shows. He also dives deep into his newest ventures: Podisphere (a G2-style SaaS directory for podcast tools) and Podclaw (an agent-first podcast hosting platform built for AI agents, not humans). The conversation covers the seismic shift happening in content creation right now — from vibe coding and Claude Code to autonomous AI agents that market products while you sleep. Harry and Jeff also discuss why long-form human conversations are becoming more valuable in an era flooded with AI-generated content, the power of niche podcasting, and why the most important skill for the next decade may simply be learning how to talk to robots.Key Takeaways0:00 — Intro: What it takes to build a podcast and a business around it in an AI-driven content landscape4:40 — Recap of previous guests: Justin Trombold on AI strategy and Rick Delisi on The Effortless Experience6:10 — Welcoming Harry Duran — how he helped launch SaaS Fuel and what Fullcast does9:50 — Harry's origin story: From JPMorgan Chase and Unilever to electronic music, DJing, and discovering podcasting at New Media Expo in 201413:30 — Meeting Pat Flynn and Amy Porterfield; pivoting from a DJ podcast to Podcast Junkies; recognizing podcasting as your own personal stage17:10 — How Harry's first paying client (a $1,000 PayPal from John Livesay) launched Fullcast in 201522:10 — Introducing Podisphere: A G2.com-style directory for podcast tools — the inspiration, the build journey, and why traffic is the only metric that matters to sponsors27:30 — Building with no-code tools (Airtable, Webflow, Bubble), the frustrations of non-technical founding, and how vibe coding changed everything in 202531:30 — Claude Code, Agent OS, and spec-driven development: how Harry built more in six months than in five years combined37:50 — SEO strategy for Podisphere: Fathom Analytics, Ahrefs, programmatic blog posts, Google Search Console, and hitting 7,000 page views/month without a press release45:20 — The power of founder relationships: How 12 years of Podcast Junkies led to meeting Andrew Mason (Descript), the SquadCast acquisition, and building a network that fuels Podisphere51:00 — Why every founder should have a podcast: relationship-building, opening doors, and earning "street cred"54:40 — Introducing Podclaw: An agent-first podcast hosting platform built for AI agents, not humans1:01:30 — Moltbook: The AI agent social network, digital wallets for agents, and autonomous marketing via cron jobs1:08:00 — The "agent economy" and why SaaS companies that block agents are "dead men walking"1:15:30 — Why the most important future skill is learning how to talk to robots; parallels to the dot-com era of 19991:21:30 — The future of podcasting: AI-generated shows, long-form authentic conversation, niche doubling down, and why human voices are becoming more valuable1:28:00 — NotebookLM and the rise of AI podcast hosts; the disclosure debate1:33:20 — Harry's personal operating system: morning meditation, written intentions, strength training, and protecting attention before screens1:37:30 — Where to find Harry: fullcast.co, thepodisphere.com, podclaw.ioTweetable Quotes"The most important skill in the future is learning how to talk to robots." — Harry Duran"You can't speak to someone for an hour and forget their face. Build Your Distribution Before You Need ItHarry spent over a decade building Podcast Junkies before it became the foundation of Podisphere. His relationships with founders like Andrew Mason (Descript) and the SquadCast team weren't accidental — they were built over 500+ interviews. Leaders who invest in platforms, relationships, and audiences compounding quietly are the ones who have leverage when they need it.2. Sell Picks and Shovels — Build for the EcosystemRather than fighting for space in a crowded software category, Harry positioned Podisphere as the infrastructure layer (the G2 of podcasting). Great SaaS leaders ask: What does this entire ecosystem need that nobody is building? Being a connector and aggregator often outlasts being just another point solution.3. Non-Technical Founders Must Learn to Build at the Speed of ThoughtHarry's journey from Airtable → Bubble → Fiverr developers → Claude Code is a roadmap for any non-technical founder in 2025. The bottleneck is no longer code — it's vision and prompting. The founder who can articulate their product clearly to an AI builds faster, iterates faster, and maintains greater ownership of the product direction.4. Traffic Is the Only Metric That Converts to Revenue — Build for Discovery FirstPodisphere hit 7,000 page views/month organically before a single press release by treating every page as an SEO asset. Harry obsessed over internal links, programmatic blog posts, and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) for AI search. SaaS leaders building content or marketplace products should think like search engines think — not just build pretty interfaces.5. Agent-First Is the New Mobile-First — Design for It NowHarry didn't build Podclaw for human users. He built it for AI agents, complete with clean APIs, no unnecessary dashboards, and agent-friendly architecture. As agent economies emerge (complete with digital wallets and autonomous purchasing), SaaS products that block or ignore agents will be displaced. Build your API surface today like agents are your power users tomorrow.6. Protect Your Peak Performance Hours — Your Best Output Comes from Taking Care of Yourself FirstHarry meditates 20 minutes every morning, writes intentions in the present tense, and strength trains three days a week before opening a laptop. He's explicit: this is not a nice-to-have. The onslaught of screens, AI noise, and constant stimulation hijacks your nervous system. The leaders who perform at the highest level over the longest runway are the ones who treat personal maintenance as a non-negotiable operating system.Guest Resourceshttps://fullcast.co/hdbioEpisode SponsorThe Futureproof Series - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfkXKUPZ5xuOqMPR7_gzGybncTtavyR1NThe Captain's KeysSmall Fish, Big Pond – https://smallfishbigpond.com/ Use the promo code ‘SaaSFuel'Champion Leadership Group – https://championleadership.com/SaaS Fuel ResourcesWebsite - https://championleadership.com/Jeff Mains on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffkmains/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jeffkmainsFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/thesaasguy/Instagram - https://instagram.com/jeffkmains

Außerdem wollen sie verstehen, was in ihrer Branche passiert. Was passiert dann? Hosting und Verbreitung Spotify for Creators bietet kostenloses Podcast-Hosting an. Welche Werte treiben uns an? Seit drei Jahren. Die Posts performen jedes Mal aufs Neue. Denn niemand erinnert sich, was du vor sechs Monaten gepostet hast. Evergreen-Content in Reinform. Konstanz schlägt Perfektion: 80 Prozent scheitern an Folge 5.

The Jag Show
Taylor Swift and The Future of Podcast Movement

The Jag Show

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 10, 2025 12:40

This year's Podcast Movement convention marked a clear turning point in the evolution of the podcasting industry. I've been attending this event since 2018, and it has always been a valuable space for independent creators like us. But now, the shift toward corporate interests is more evident than ever. With the merger of Podcast Movement and Sounds Profitable, and the major announcement that the 2026 event will move from its usual summer schedule to New York City in September, it's clear the focus is shifting toward advertisers and industry execs. While this move might serve the broader industry well, it raises valid concerns for independent creators who may be priced out or feel sidelined. In a candid conversation with Tom Webster and James Cridland, I asked for clarity on where indie podcasters stand. Tom acknowledged that not everyone will fit into the new model, but there will still be space carved out for us. So while we're keeping an eye on how this transition plays out, we're also considering events like Podfest, which may better cater to creators. One of the most actionable takeaways came from producer Jay Yow, who stressed the importance of wearing headphones while recording. It's not just a technical recommendation—it's essential for clean audio. Poor sound can sabotage a good show, especially on remote platforms like Riverside or Squadcast. His argument? If Taylor Swift can wear headphones on camera, so can we.We also revisited the ongoing debate between video and audio podcasting. While video is great for discovery—especially on YouTube—audio remains the foundation. As Johnny Podcasts puts it: audio is your shoes, video is your socks. You can skip socks, but you can't skip shoes. Resources should go to audio first, especially since many YouTube “viewers” are actually just listening in the background. The biggest research insight came from Hal Rood and Tim Bronsil's "The Podcast Study," who revealed that most listeners focus on just three main podcasts, spending 75% of their time with their favorite. To stand out, we need to avoid wasting those critical first 30 seconds of our show. Open strong, skip the fluff, and immediately give listeners a reason to stick around. It's what separates a casual listener from a loyal one.Rob Walch of Libsyn reminded us again that shortcuts like “buying downloads” are scams. Real growth takes time, and authenticity matters more than inflated numbers. Despite claims of 4.6 million podcasts, only around 354,000 are active. The space is wide open if we're consistent and committed. Finally, we dove into SEO and PSO strategies. SEO helps our episodes show up in search results, while PSO focuses on discoverability within platforms like Apple and Spotify. To win at both, we need smart titling, backlinking, frequent publishing, and full show notes on our websites. All in all, the industry is changing fast—but with the right tools and mindset, there's still room for independent voices like ours to thrive. In Episode 257 of The Business Development Podcast, Kelly Kennedy delivers Part 5 of the Podcast Playbook series, focused on choosing the right hosting and recording tools to launch, grow, and monetize your podcast. He breaks down the often-confusing world of podcast technology, sharing hard-earned insights from producing over 250 episodes. Kelly offers a detailed, no-fluff comparison of the top hosting platforms—including Captivate, Buzzsprout, and Libsyn—emphasizing the importance of selecting a tool that fits both your current needs and long-term growth. He also highlights why a proper hosting platform is the backbone of your show, how AI tools are reshaping the landscape, and why podcast websites are essential for brand control.Shifting into recording software, Kelly outlines a comprehensive list of both AI-driven and manual options—from Descript and Adobe Podcast to Riverside.fm and Adobe Audition—giving creators the flexibility to choose tools that align with their workflow and technical comfort. He stresses that there is no perfect solution, only the one that works best for your goals and process. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned podcaster, this episode is packed with clarity, guidance, and behind-the-scenes wisdom to help you avoid the common tech pitfalls and set yourself up for long-term success. Part 6 will cover stepping up to the mic with confidence—mindset, planning, and recording your first episode.Key Takeaways: 1. Your hosting platform is the backbone of your podcast—it stores your content, distributes it, and tracks your analytics.2. Don't chase the cheapest or flashiest hosting option—choose one that matches your growth goals and workflow.3. All hosting platforms work... until they don't. Expect to pivot as your show evolves, and that's completely normal.4. AI tools in podcast hosting can save hours per week by auto-generating titles, show notes, and audiograms—use them.5. Your podcast website matters—it's your show's digital home and a platform you actually control.6. There's no best recording software—only the best one for your comfort level, tech skills, and editing style.7. Platforms like Descript, Alitu, and Adobe Podcast simplify editing and cleanup using AI for those new to audio production.8. Tools like Riverside.fm and Squadcast offer pro-level remote recording with local audio that avoids internet issues.9. Manual editing in Adobe Audition or Audacity gives unmatched control for creators who want to master their sound.10. Podcasting is an iterative process—set yourself up for long-term success by thinking beyond your first episode.Companies mentioned in this episode: Capital Business Development Captivate FM Buzzsprout Transistor Libsyn Podbean Spotify rss.com RedCircle CoHost Simplecast Megaphone PodPage PodcastPage IO Descript Alitu Adobe Podcast Podcastle Clean Voice AI Adobe Audition Riverside.fm Squadcast Zencast Audacity GarageBand Links referenced in this episode:capitalbd.cakellykennedyofficial.com/thecatalystclub

Intel has appointed Lip Butan as its new CEO, effective March 18th, following a tumultuous period marked by a 54% drop in share prices and the ousting of former CEO Pat Gelsinger. Butan, a seasoned tech investor and former CEO of Keynes Design Systems, is expected to revitalize Intel's fortunes and navigate its controversial Foundry strategy aimed at expanding manufacturing capabilities. Investors reacted positively to his appointment, with Intel's stock price rising over 11% in after-hours trading. Butan's leadership is seen as crucial for Intel to compete in the semiconductor market, particularly in smartphone and AI chip sectors. In the realm of cybersecurity, SailPoint has expanded its Managed Service Provider program to make identity security solutions more accessible to smaller enterprises, addressing the increasing threats targeting vulnerable identities. This initiative allows businesses to onboard identity security as a fundamental function, focusing on entry-level use cases while providing pathways for future growth. Meanwhile, TeamViewer has launched its first integrated solution with One E, enhancing digital workspace experiences through improved device monitoring and secure remote connectivity.SolarWinds has announced its acquisition of Squadcast, a company specializing in incident response solutions, to bolster its capabilities in managing complex IT environments. This merger aims to streamline incident response and improve operational resilience for IT professionals. Additionally, Verizon Business has introduced a new security service called Trusted Connection, which enhances cybersecurity by implementing continuous verification of access to devices, networks, and cloud applications, addressing the significant risks posed by stolen credentials.A recent study by the Tao Center for Digital Journalism has raised concerns about the reliability of generative AI search tools, revealing that over 60% of citations provided by these tools are incorrect. This highlights the urgent need for better evaluation and citation practices in AI-powered searches. Furthermore, research from Harvard Business Review indicates that while AI can enhance executive decision-making, it requires active human engagement to avoid critical blind spots. The findings suggest that companies must find the right balance between human oversight and AI capabilities to optimize decision-making processes. Four things to know today 00:00 Intel Bets on New CEO Lip-Bu Tan—Will the Foundry Gamble Pay Off?04:47 Big Security Moves: SailPoint, SolarWinds, and Verizon Roll Out New Solutions—Here's What They Mean07:59 Think AI Search Is Reliable? 60% of Its Citations Are Wrong09:14 AI in the Boardroom? Surprise! Hey there folks, this week Kross was fortunate enough to get to interview Joel Daniel Phillips, and talk to him about his path through art, his work with Joe Abercrombie, Pierce Brown, and VE Schwab, AND a little bit about The Devils! We also get some exclusive thoughts about new projects coming down the pipe... including something fun with Red Rising. A small apology for the audio quality- Squadcast somehow failed to capture the audio quality, but with some wizardry from Andrew and Kross, we were able to recover it and make it work, all in record time. This is a unique episode is the way that it is also the first episode that we've recorded on video. We'll be sharing that early next week, so that you can get excellent looks at each of the prints that he shared within the conversation, and more. Beyond that, be sure to check out the merch drop that Lit Escalates has going for special editions of The Devils, and more! Next week, our friend Adam steps back in to lead the show, and Krossland through discussing Becky Chambers Monk and Robot duology. Don't worry- only another week or so until we return back to The Heroes. See you then.
