Welcome to this captivating episode of "Stuck In My Mind Podcast," titled "Behind the Red Hat: Larry Roberts – Secrets to Mastering Content Creation and Personal Branding." Our special guest, Larry Roberts, joins host Wize El Jefe to share his insights on personal branding, the exponential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on content creation, and a time-tested approach to podcasting from a holistic perspective. Larry Roberts, towering at 6'3" and weighing in at around 250 pounds, encapsulates larger-than-life charisma and presence. But it's his signature red hat that anchors his public persona. This now-iconic red hat, a casual purchase from Amazon, first caught eyes at a Bitcoin Miami conference and has since become the emblem of Larry's brand, both symbolically and literally. However, Roberts emphasizes that personal branding extends far beyond just identifiable markers. It's about integrating one's voice, behavior, and reputation to create a holistic and authentic personal brand—encapsulated beautifully in his book, "Under the Red Hat." The conversation delves into the nuanced role of this transcendence, where the hat acts as a focal point, but the human behind it shines the brightest. Larry explains how embracing identifiable accessories can add to one's brand identity, yet underscores that ultimately, the person behind these symbols provides real value. Next, the discussion transitions into the profoundly transformative landscape AI provides in content creation. Larry, who leveraged AI in a prior role as a business intelligence analyst, began exploring AI's implications in the broader content space soon after the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. With the excitement of a pioneer, Larry recounts how his early engagement with ChatGPT allowed him to recognize the revolutionary potential AI holds for scripting, post-production, and editing in podcasts—even extolling tools like CapShow, Cast Magic, CapCut, and Opus Clips. But it's not all machines and codes—both Larry and Wize agree that while AI can mitigate workflow bottlenecks and enhance productivity, human ingenuity remains indispensable. Larry humorously quips how sometimes AI content might be nonsensical, and human oversight becomes crucial to preserving content integrity. Throughout the episode, you'll hear Wize El Jefe align with and enthuse about having unique personal identifiers in the world of podcasting. Wize recounts his early morning routines starting at 2 AM and the disciplined structure he follows to keep his podcast thriving. From subscribing to newsletters like Podfest and Podnews to staying informed through "YouTube University," Wize highlights the semblance and importance of a routine—a learning both hosts credit as a significant enhancement over their podcasting careers. As the conversation progresses, Larry and Wize navigate through the essence and subjective nature of success in podcasting. For Larry, early podcasting success was more about fun and enjoyment. His comedy podcast, initially rough and spontaneous, grew into a live stage show in Dallas, contributing richly to his career. Both agree that while financial metrics like sponsorships and merchandise matter, what truly counts are audience engagement and meaningful interaction. They share humorous anecdotes about low audience engagement and overcoming those through persistent and better branding strategies. Larry recounts gifting actionable values in his public engagements, insights on going from humble beginnings with basic gear like the Yeti Snowball microphone, to more sophisticated setups like the Samsung Q2U and ATR2100. Wize adds a relatable note by sharing his pandemic-born journey into podcasting, with early inspiration stemming from family interviews. A significant portion of the episode outlines essential strategies for new podcasters. Roberts advises novices to start with a clear plan and purpose unless the sole aim is recreational. Building a successful brand includes leveraging genuine storytelling. Connecting authentically and emotionally with the audience fosters trust and loyalty—elements leading to strong personal or business brands. Through the lens of his evolving brand, from "Readily Random" to "Podcast Boost," and finally, "Red Hat Media," Larry substantiates the need for personal stories and authenticity. An authentic narrative, he says, resonates vastly more than any flashy epithet or identifier. Finally, they discuss the broader podcast community—the experiences with influencers and peers, how real-life interactions often defy the starry facades of online personas, and the distinctions between podcasting celebrities and traditional celebrities. Larry and Wize share earnest laughter, mutual respect, and an undeniable camaraderie, wrapping the episode with profound admiration for their peers and immense appreciation for their respective journeys. In this episode, join Wize El Jefe and Larry Roberts in an enriching dialogue filled with practical insights, heartwarming stories, and invaluable takeaways. Whether you're a podcaster, content creator, or entrepreneur, the learnings and revelations from this conversation are bound to provide actionable inspiration. As the session draws to a close, Larry extends his virtual hand to help anyone needing guidance on their podcasting journey, underscoring his support and readiness to foster the podcasting community. About LarryNovember 14, 2013, Larry sat on his couch after a solid two-week bender crying and watching a tragic scene in one of his favorite movies over and over again when something spoke to him and said “Get help today, or tomorrow isn't going to happen”. He had already been in the hospital earlier that year for alcohol poisoning and this time he was even beyond his initial “rock bottom moment”. In this moment of clarity, Larry reached out to a best friend and told him, “I need help, or I'm going to die.” Larry woke up several days later in the hospital in McKinney after being admitted to the Enterhealth Ranch in Van Alstyne in very unstable condition. They were unable to stabilize his vitals, and after several failed efforts, an ambulance was called. After being rehydrated and somewhat stabilized over the course of three days, Larry was sent back to Enterhealth where he continued recovery in their detox wing for roughly a week. The following 6 weeks were spent getting sober while going through their program. Larry has now been sober 8 years amongst becoming a successful podcaster, content creator, and entrepreneur.Though sober, Larry had caused significant damage to his nervous system and as a result, was in constant pain, even to the point of walking with a cane for more than a year.To combat this chronic pain, he was on a non-opioid cocktail of medications, which at one point was up to 32 pills a day. It took several years to slowly make progress towards getting the pain under control, but a side effect of the medication and inactivity led to a tremendous amount of weight gain, his peak reaching 326lbs.After leaving a 21-year corporate career on January 4th of 2021, Larry managed to take himself off ALL of the medications and as of writing this on 12/18/21, is down 82lbs to 244lbs.Immediately blown away at this versatile, innovative, wild west of a medium, Larry quickly became obsessed with learning how to start his own show. Before he knew what happened, his first podcast episode with a local comedian and family friend as a co-host was launched. The show was a hit on a variety of platforms, from the podcast to online radio with Deep Ellum onAir, to a live stage show at Hat Tricks in Lewisville. To this day Hat Tricks continues to host one of the largest comedy open mics outside of a comedy club in the metroplex, and it all spawned from that original show. The show featured a random selection of guests covering a wide variety of topics that Larry found interesting. The issue was that it didn't speak to a particular audience, so he struggled to find listeners and get those coveted downloads that are critical to the success of any podcast.Over the next several years, the podcast has continued to evolve and has found its place in the top 1.5% of all podcasts with a focus on entrepreneurship and self-mastery. With this focus, Larry recently rebranded the podcast from Readily Random with Larry Roberts to You're the Boss.https://readilyrandom.com/https://www.facebook.com/larrynroberts/https://www.linkedin.com/in/larrynroberts/https://www.instagram.com/thelarryroberts/https://twitter.com/iamlarryroberts I am inviting you to check out my resources page. For Larry Roberts, the start of 2021 brought with it a major ending: his last day of working in Corporate America. After a 21-year stint in corporate IT, Larry — a podcaster, speaker, best-selling author and top-rated course creator — was ready to make the leap and work full-time for himself. And what it took to get here has been quite the journey. Although he's long had experience in the world of side hustles, it was the growth of his podcast, Readily Random with Larry Roberts, that made him truly believe he could be own boss. And it was also podcasting that gave Larry an important tool for his sobriety. “Podcasting as a whole was inspired because it was me looking for an outlet in my new sober reality,” he says. “About a year or so before I started podcasting, I got sober. Prior to that I was I was a hardcore alcoholic.” For a while, Larry had been able to keep his drinking on the sly and saw himself as a “functional” alcoholic — until one day, about 14 years into his corporate career, he realized he'd become anything but functional. After two stints of hospitalization, nearly losing his job and a three-week bender in which he lived solely on gin and protein shakes, Larry went to rehab. It wasn't long after that, through a happy accident in the form of an ESPN outage and a turn to Joe Rogan, he realized that podcasting could be his medium. On this episode of Life After Addiction And Indictment, Steve and Larry talk about how that realization became a full-blown entrepreneurial career, what it's like to leave Corporate America behind, and the advice that any new podcaster needs to hear. What You'll Learn: How Larry monetized his podcast without relying on the usual suspects, and why he believes the “riches are in the niches” How podcasting became a vehicle for forging his new sober identity Why, as an entrepreneur, you need to find the who — not just the how And much more! Favorite Quote: “I'm still to this day, a firm believer in having coaches and having direction… I have coaches for everything. And I don't do anything without making sure that I'm following in someone's footsteps that has done it before me and can guide me to do it properly.” — Larry Roberts Connect with Larry: You can find Larry on Clubhouse in various podcast rooms, or on:Facebook LinkedIn Readily Random Media How To Get Involved: Find Steve on Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, or on the Life After Addiction and Indictment Facebook Group. Merry Christmas everyone! Thank you for being a part of the Readily Random family! I appreciate it! Earlier today, after I'm sure all of the early morning Christmas festivities had subsided I found it interesting to see how long it took some folks to get back to normal. In some cases, I was blown away. Christmas trees on the curb by 8am, people looking for open stores and one that really got me...a mom was asking in a Facebook group if there was anyplace open that would be something for teenagers to do. What? Didn't they just receive their Christmas presents? Were they tired of them already? It left me thinking for the rest of the day and I share my thoughts on this episode.
That's right ladies and gentlemen, it's coming down to the wire! There's only six more days until Christmas! But, there's still a weekend in there for some of that last minute shopping. Today's episode presents an almost back to normal situation with no ugly sweaters and no elf hat. But, we still manage to spread a little holiday cheer and mix in a little info about an upcoming episode of Readily Random! So, kick off your shoes, prop up those "been shopping all day" feeties and give this one a listen!
One of our favorite, familiar voices greets us as we begin today's journey into the holidays! We have a TON of visitors during today's 10 minutes and that helps keep me distracted after we are joined by someone that is going to be reviewing Readily Random later in the evening! But, that gives us a chance at growth, so I welcome the opportunity...kinda! So, let's pull up our britches and prepare for the review together!!
Day 18 of #NaPodPoMo brings ratings, reviews and other interesting news. We talk about my experience with yoga, dealing with trauma and PTSD! I also give a quick preview to tomorrow morning's brand new episode of Readily Random featuring Kat McLead as we talk about Stay at Home Mom Entrepreneurs! Jump on in here for a stretch and a pose!
This week, we go back into the Readily Random archives to one of the most popular episodes of the podcast. It features Joe Navarro, a retired FBI Special Agent who quite literally saved the United States from impending doom in the early 80's. How did he do it? I don't want to spoil it, but it all revolved around body language. Joe Navarro worked as an FBI special agent and supervisor in the areas of counterintelligence and behavioral assessment for 25 years. He is one of the founding members of the FBI’s elite Behavioral Analysis Program and he also served as a SWAT Team Commander and Bureau Pilot. Mr. Navarro is the author of numerous books including his best known body language book, What Every BODY is Saying and well as Dangerous Personalities and his most recent Three Minutes to Doomsday. Although now retired from the FBI, Mr. Navarro now focuses his efforts on speaking and consulting with major corporations worldwide as well as lecturing at Harvard Business School. Tragedy obliterates comedy and lays a jagged landscape for podcasters to navigate as shows are judged in the context of the moment and not the context of the moment they were recorded. A misinterpreted posting of a show can become a viral social media wrecking ball. Readily Random's Larry Roberts and The Safety Doc David Perrodin dissect the awkward dance of tragedy and comedy in the podcasting medium and how to lessen one's chances of appearing insensitive to events that beg the question, "How can you laugh at a time like this?" UNLUCKY TIMING & HORRIFIC CONTEXT. Hours before the October 1, 2017 Las Vegas shooting that claimed 59 lives and injured hundreds, Dr. Perrodin released a podcast interview of Katie Pechon of Cajun Navy Relief. The show's keel was the goodness that unites Americans in times of tragedy (per natural disasters). Suddenly, this positive, uplifting show was seemingly misplaced in the shattered landscape of contemporary America digesting the new “record” of murders by a gunman. Dr. Perrodin recalled that roughly a week after the 9/11/01 attacks, America's top comedians delivered a special tribute comedy show that they collectively prefaced by admitting their native craft felt awkward to demonstrate in such a twisted, smoldering aftermath that ended thousands of lives. Yet, comedy is human – and humanity is giving and caring and sharing and knowing that laughter isn't a tarp over pain, but perhaps a temporary diversion or a way to arrange thoughts to a perspective that helps restore a torus, or sense or a ‘new' “normal” to one's life. PROMOTING A POSITIVE STORY HOURS AFTER THE VEGAS SHOOTING – HOW? Larry suggested that shows released proximal to sentinel tragedies could be edited to include a brief acknowledgement of the event. In some instances, he notes that it might be best just to bury the episode. David admitted that he throttled back his promotion of the Cajun Navy interview after the Vegas shooting – a decision he grapples with to this day. WHY GUESTS LAUGH WHEN PRESENTING TRAGIC PERSONAL STORIES? It's bio science. Researchers have found there is some evidence that strong negative feelings may provoke positive expressions; for example nervous laughter appears when people are confronted with a difficult or frightening situation, and smiles have been found by other psychologists to occur during extreme sadness. Larry Roberts shared how some of his guests who have recovered from drug addictions and horrible life events inject laughter or humor into their narratives. From a surface analysis, this might give the incorrect impression that the person is not serious about their story. In fact, the oddly-placed laughter is evidence that the person is anxious and seeking a way to feel more comfortable about expressing tragic thoughts.
