Episode 211 is the farewell episode for It's No Secret with Dr T., and I thought I would bring back my good friend, previous guest and long-term supporter of the podcast Jeff Peterson to help my say goodbye. Jeff Peterson is the owner of Geneva Supply and was a guest on the show back on Episode 017 with Bill Davis, titled Drive Your Business. In addition to bidding farewell, I did manage to draw some more business wisdom from Jeff before we hung up the microphone. Today we discuss: Working with Amazon Helping manufacturers with Content & Brand Management What takes to get noticed Why entrepreneurship is bullshit Intrapreneurship - the creative entrepreneurial spirit within an organisation Why you should not ask family and friends what they think of your ideas, just remember the bad singers you've seen on American Idol, someone told them they were good at singing. Why you should have a business card. "When you're living in a world where there are many generations that are still in the working community, you cannot go hardcore just one way when it corms to networking". BIZTANK & Kids in The Tank It's about career exploration. School is not connecting kids to the reality of life or the career paths that they will be heading into very soon after school. It's about exposing them to new possibilities. The key is to empower kids that their career decision is their decision. It's not their parents or school guidance councillor. We need to open and expose their minds to other careers. Final Tip Don't shy away from people you know and enjoy being with and talking too. Don't think about what you're going to get to from it, just enjoy the pleasure of peoples company. Get to know people just to get to know people, nurture friendships in an old-school, business card sort of way. Don't focus on all the social media and quick online fixes (number of friends, likes, etc.). Build real relationships. Farewell It's kind of sad to bid farewell, but you've got to know when it's time to walk away, and now is the right time. I'd like to thank everyone that has been a guest on It's No Secret with Dr T. and all the people that have been part of the 55,000 downloads over the past 211 episodes. Changing and adapting to thinking faster Team empowerment and accountability Difference between failing and learning Setting up FEEDBACK LOOPS Avoiding complacency How the business landscape will change Post COVID-19 Guidance To lead a team, you don't necessarily need to lay out ground rules, it's more like providing guardrails and keeping the team on the same road. Measuring Culture Doing a survey once per year is not a good measure of culture and engagement of an organisation it's more of a pulse, and therefore it should be done more often. "One of the biggest mistakes a company can make is watching its closest competitor and not listening to their own customer needs". Justin Blake is the owner of Justin Blake Media, and on this episode, we discuss marketing and what you should be doing now and post COVID-19. What you do now will set you up for when we come out the other end. The biggest problem facing many small business owners is what they think marketing is, and more often than not, it's not marketing, it's wishful thinking. On this episode we discuss: Word of Mouth Marketing and why it is flawed It's too slow You're not in control of it. The message relayed about your business could be incorrect. Social media and the internet are at our fingertips but: You need to focus on your ideal client. Who do you want to work with? You need to know where they are, and you need to be there. You need to have the right message and talk to them in a way they understand. You cannot expect people to know what you do, so educate them. Why are you different? The importance of claiming your Google My Business Page Landing pages Google Adwords Why you need to stay in touch with your database through newsletters, online demonstrations, etc., you need to give them the information they are searching for. Customer service and training your team, especially the person answering your phone. Final Tip Marketing is not scary, especially in these worrying times, but don't sit back and rely on what you've done in the past. Now is the perfect time to up your game, take stock of where you are right now and make a plan for the future. (Far better experience than visiting a zoo) Africa is a land of real magic - it exists in every living thing, around every corner you turn, and occupies even the most distant horizons. Every business, whether they know it or not, is in the entertainment business. And, when it comes to entertainment, you need to know what your fans want, and then you need to give it to them in spades. Jesse Cole, with the help of his wife Emily and dedicated Banana Team, have taken this Fan's First Experience to a whole new level. Jesse Cole is the author of Find Your Yellow Tux and co-owner of The Savannah Bananas, a baseball team in Savannah, Georgia. The team entered the Coastal Plains League in 2016, and after a relatively tight first year they went on the have three consecutive successful sell-out seasons from 2017-2019, and it doesn't look like slowing down any time soon. On this episode we discuss: Why the Savannah Banana's have 4000+ fans per game while other teams in the league struggle to get 200 - 500 fans. How to turn boring into something exciting. Asking yourself what business are you really in. "When you’re in the entertainment business it’s very easy to make decisions on what to do. When you’re in the baseball business, you’re focused on trying to get better players". This is why it's essential to focus on the fans experience, not the money. The importance of learning from other industries Jesse explains what he learnt from the cruise industry and also the Magic Castle Hotel. "Whatever you’re business is, how do you bring people together where that community is formed where people can talk about and be able to experience things together". Finding pain-points and removing them. Create the experience you want and put yourself in the customers' shoes. "If you’re shipping something like everyone else, in the same packaging, you become like everyone else. The customer cannot tell you apart". Let Them Take Advantage of You How can you add that much value that you make the customer feel like they’re taking advantage of you? When the customer feels like they're are getting a great deal, they want to purchase more. They feel almost guilty for not buying that beer or t-shirt. Creating An Unfair Advantage Stop asking how we can make more money from our customers, instead ask, how can we develop more fans? If you make the experience so good, you create an unfair advantage over your competitors because your fans will tell everyone else about you and will want to come back. Lessons From Southwest Airlines They live by the motto, 'We Give More People Freedom To Fly', so when airlines started introducing payment for bags, they refused to be like every other airline, even though it was shown they would earn $350 million by doing it. Instead, they stuck to their beliefs and values and what was important for their customers and had an increase in revenue of $1.1 Billion Why Their No Advertising At Their Stadium Jesse eliminated all advertising because fans don’t come to the baseball to see advertising? He kept asking, 'what do we stand for' and then made sure every decision was based on that, just like Southwest Airlines. His sole responsibility then was to make the fans happy, not make the sponsors happy. This is a complete change in mindset. Human Collisions His team are very aware that every game is someone’s first game so you’ve got to put on a show and make them feel special. Jesse and his team place a lot of emphasis on making contact with the fans, which he calls human collisions. You Wouldn't Believe Moments You want your customers to have ‘you wouldn’t believe moments' when they visit your business. When they get back to work or talk to friends, they say, 'you wouldn't believe what happened yesterday at...' Don’t just look at points of sale; look at points of experience. Have the Courage to Experiment not every idea will be a good idea, but you've got to have the courage to experiment. Ask, how can we improve on every touchpoint, when they arrive and when they leave. Don’t count the coins, counts the fans, this is how you'll know if you're getting this right. Fans First Experience It's all about creating a Fans First Experience. You need to map out your big delivery moments. This has been so successful that Jesse has created Fan First Experience Workshops that run during the summer baseball season. You should also check out his podcast Bananas For Business. Find Your Yellow Tux In his book, Find Your Yellow Tux, Jesse explains people are in a mad rush to the middle, going about their business and fitting in. The problem is, while they may feel as if they’re doing their own thing, they’re not—they’re doing what’s expected of you. To stand out, take whatever you think is normal, and do the exact opposite, do the remarkable. Everyone has something that makes them stand out that’s the best version of themselves; you need to amplify that. Final Tip In the back of their playbook (employee manual), which is given to every team member (staff) it says: "Be patient in what you want for yourself but be impatient in how much you give to others". What you want to do is deliver as much information that you’re uncomfortable with, and then deliver more. Becoming the patients first line of contact, by telling and teaching them everything If you only give teasers of information, they will find the rest of the information they require elsewhere. Teasers are sometimes seen as sneaky. If you deliver as much as possible and they will go to you first. Byron Dempsey is the owner of Stream Digital Marketing, a company that specialises in creating social media video content for podcasters and keynote speakers. The power of video is to leverage what you're already doing. He is also the host of the Driven Young Podcast which explores ways to help educate and inspire the younger generation around entrepreneurship and practical life skills we arent taught in school. On this episode we discuss: How to create a lot of video content in a short amount of time How a 40-minute talk can generate enough material for the next two months. Leverage what you’re already doing. Why public speaking and podcasting videos are more natural to work with. Leveraging longterm and being aware of video formats. Tip for Podcasters If you're already podcasting, it's as simple as putting your smartphone on a $10 tripod and pressing record. You've already go the audio sorted. You have options: You can record externally (Camera or Smartphone) or use Zoom / Skype to record. Either way, it's still better than an audiogram. (I use to have my guest intro themselves) Social Media This is important to remember; it's important to post regular video content as it keeps you front of mind with your followers. They do see your videos even if they are not necessarily engaging with all of your posts. Positioning Video content builds traffic to everything you do (podcasting, speaking, etc.) and positions you as an expert. Whenever Byron has a guest on his podcast, he gives them access to all the video content he creates. This is a great way to leverage what he does because they will share this content with their audience. Video Inclusions Videos include intro's, outro's, calls to action, music and each video must be formatted correctly for each social media platform. It's also important to add subtitles and length is essential, 30 seconds to 2 minutes max. Check out REV.COM and PICKMEE.COM Reposting Content Statistically, only about 10% of your followers will see your video posts, so it's not annoying to repost your video content multiple times, just put some space between each post. Once you have a bank of content, you can plan out to reuse it again over the next 12-months. Gary Vee has used some of his videos over twenty times. Don't forget you can also RETARGET on Facebook to people who have watched your videos previously and use content from a video to create a BLOG. Jason Feifer is a journalist, Editor in Chief at Entrepreneur Magazine, author of Mr Nice Guy, and the host of three podcasts, Problems Solvers, Pessimists Archive and Hush Money. On this episode we discuss: Turning mistakes into positives (Smedberg’s Farm, Maine) Home of the LOBESTER. His interview with Mark Wahlberg - Mark Wahlberg's Secret To Becoming More Disciplined Why sometimes, your effort isn’t enough. You can work your ass off, and you will not get what you’re looking for. But, you can learn to shift your attention to create a new version of what you wanted to satisfy the desire you had. It's not just about the hustle Banging your head against a wall will not turn that wall into a door. But if you shift that effort into something more constructive and more realistic, and fits better with the skill sets you have and the resources available, it can create something that is just as good. Content creation When you’re producing content you’re not creating it for yourself you are producing it for an audience and so you better really understand that audience and how to serve them and how you can deliver it in a way that no one else can. "People don't read Entrepreneur Magazine for fun. They want insights into how to build their business and their careers". Stop doing what people hate Every business does things that people hate, and they think it’s ok because that’s how things have always been done. Think about it and eliminate them!!! Final Tip Treat your time like your most valuable resource. You don’t spend money at total random, and you should not spend time in total random either. I have been trying to get my wife, Christine Franklin, onto It's No Secret with Dr T. for quite some time and today I finally managed to get a microphone in her hand and delve into the topic of working with your significant other. The reason I think this topic is important is that both Christine and I have heard friends say they could never work with their husband or wife, they would kill each other. This always surprised us because we've been able to work together, successfully for well over twenty years and have loved every moment. Yes, we've had disagreements, but they have been few and far between, and the goal of this episode is to shed some light on why we believe we have been such a great team and continue to enjoy each others company, even after 20+ years. Have you ever considered why some businesses appear regularly in the media and others don't, even though they're in the same industry and just as qualified to have an opinion? The answer is simple, they don't wait for media outlets to contact them; instead, they're submitting media releases and editorials regularly, and always provide quality content, so they become the go-to business in the industry. This information is covered in Chapter 25 of It's No Secret There's Money in Podiatry and Chapter 27 of It's No Secret There's Money in Small Business, both available from my website. Wilson Lawrence is a Performance, Personal Development and English Communications Coach focusing on Self and Time Management. He studied at the South West London College For Higher Business Studies and currently lives in Germany. I first heard Wilson on the Operation Self Reset podcast series with Jacob Nawrocki, and since then we have become good friends, and I am so pleased to breathe life back into this podcast episode because the content is so good. Yes, this is a REBROADCAST of Episode #3. Topics covered in this episode: Why watching television can influence your mood and emotions throughout the day. Start your day in silence: Most people wake up and check their social media accounts and immediately put their brains into reactive mode and become part of someone else’s agenda. Developing affirmations and writing them down. Do it the right way, and you will feel and create the emotions in your mind. Asking a focusing question (The One Thing) – What is the one thing that I can do right now, such by doing it, it will make everything else easier or unnecessary? The brain functions best first thing in the morning and after having recovery breaks during the day. This is why you must do the most important work first and not waste your mental energy checking emails. (Prefrontal Cortex) Distractions will occur if you don’t do the most important things first. When people say they’ve had a stressful day, what they’re saying is they’ve had a busy day. Busy does not mean productive, and quantity does not equal quality. Pareto Principle: The 80:20 Rule. If you delay important tasks (20%), distractions (80%) will prevent you from getting them down. To-Do Lists: Focus on the most important task first, then worry about the rest if they’re still necessary. Don’t do the most fun task first (distraction). When you add value, the value will come back to you, and to give value, you must first be more interested than interesting, and focus on quality over quantity. No such thing as weaknesses, they’re areas of opportunity, and when you combine this with your focusing question, it can be very powerful. Social Media winners and losers. When you analyse your own social media posts, what are you saying about yourself? Having an opinion is excellent, as long as you can back it up with your reasoning, or evidence. The Bandwagon Effect: When everyone joins a cause or movement because it’s become fashionable and popular to do so. People fear by not jumping onboard they may get left behind. This applies to how some people market their business. Show gratitude to those that have helped you succeed. The Morning Routine: It’s an investment, not a chore. This episode with David M Frees is a REBROADCAST and it was chosen because the content is so friggin good. It is also the most downloaded episode on It's No Secret with Dr T. If you missed it the first time you'll be glad I'm rebroadcasting and if you did hear this episode the first time you'll be happy as well. David M. Frees is a Trust, Estate and Wealth Preservation Lawyer from Phoenixville Pennsylvania. He is an expert when it comes to persuasion and communication, and on a personal note, Dave is one of the best communicators I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I think you’ll go back and listen to this episode numerous times because there are so many takeaway points. Here are the highlights: The first and most powerful key to being an excellent communicator, great negotiator and person of influence, is to master the art of listening to the other person. You need to quiet the demons in your head and not be thinking about what you want to say next. When you meet someone, always be looking for something to compliment him or her on, but make it genuine. “Wow, that is a smashing tie”. It takes enormous practice to listen and not automatically respond or jump into the conversation. Everyone you meet is smarter than you at something, and thinking this way sets you up in a very positive mindset right from the start. The other person will sense your positive body language and attitude towards them. You can build trust by confessing something very early in the conversation. If you’re selling a product, you may point out a flaw in certain situations, or if it’s a personal conversation, you may make an admission that may be slightly odd or embarrassing. Just don’t do it in the first 30 seconds. Some people will say that using these techniques is just manipulation, and they are correct; however, all human communication is manipulative in some way, but you need to give up the idea that it’s a bad thing. It’s your INTENT for the outcome that matters. You can manipulate negatively or positively. Where is the best place to learn more about this subject? The language we use, when communicating, can be very powerful and influential. Saying to a child, ‘don’t spill the milk’…puts that image in their head and increases the chance of them spilling the milk. But if you say, ‘keep the milk in the cup’, that’s the image they will see. We see words as images. The tonality of your voice, the speed of your voice and your body language are far more important than the words you use. This is why Barry White was so popular with his female audience. Learning to vary the speed and tone of your voice can be very useful in certain situations. If you want to hurry people up, or slow people down use your voice. It’s essential to go back and re-listen to mentors, previous podcasts and reread books because you’ll have a different mindset year to year and you’ll pick up new things each time. When you make a deal with yourself that you’re going to do something, no matter what, you need to stick to it, but don’t stay with it if it’s not working. Sometimes it is advisable to quit. Persuasion and influence are different. Persuasion is very hard to do because it relies upon you changing someone else’s mind, but over time and by building trust, it is possible; however, influence is where to want to be. Persuasion is part of a bigger goal, and that is to become an influencer. Dave runs an event in Tempe, Arizona every October: Business Black Ops. If you want to grow your small business fast the best way to do it is to clearly identify your client avatar (your ideal client) as soon as possible, and then develop your USP - Unique Selling Proposition based on that avatar. My guest today, Alex Frees is a Marketing Strategist. He is a frequent speaker and consultant in the areas of marketing, sales, business automation, and client/customer selection, cultivation, retention, and referral, and he is currently the Director of Marketing at Credit Suite which was recently ranked on the Inc 5000 list. What is a Marketing Strategist? A marketing strategist develops strategies and processes to enhance the marketing of a business. Marketing is a driver of revenue; it's not an expense. The Client Avatar Many companies think they need to market and sell to everybody, but this is a mistake. It's similar to niching down your business, except you are niching down who you are selling and marketing to. It seems like a daunting task when you're first starting, but it is very worthwhile in the long run. When you find the right avatar, it lowers your marketing costs and increases retention. Marketing to the Wrong Avatar When you sell to someone, who is not your ideal client, it costs you more in the backend with unhappy staff, increased complaints and problems, and can waste your time. You need to create an Anti-Avatar, find out where they hang out and make an effort not to go there. Never Too Late It's never too late to start evaluating who buys the most, working out where your profits are coming from and making decisions on what is not working. You should review your marketing and avatar every six months to make sure you're on track or if you need to make changes. Knowing your avatar lets you know if you should be concentrating on old-school marketing or digital marketing. Digital Advertising You have to play around with digital advertising to see what works. Just doing something once is not good enough. Poor results could be the result of poor copy, the wrong image, or poor targeting because you didn't know your avatar. USP - Unique Selling Proposition Your USP quickly tells your customers why they should buy from you and not your competitors, by answering these three questions: What do you do well that your competitor doesn't? What does the consumer want? What problems are you solving? If you take a look at the Venn Diagram (Ep 188), money is made in the safe spot, not that you can't make money in the other areas, but you'll need to spend more and invest more time. Your USP is not just used in your marketing; it becomes part of the culture of your business. Final Tip Don't be afraid to test. It's always better to test and fail and learn from that failure than do nothing. Business Black Ops On this episode, Alex and I mention meeting at Business Black Ops which is a mastermind group I have been part of for the past five years, run by Dave Frees. For the past five years, I have travelled to Arizona to attend an event called Business Black Ops, organised by David M Frees. There are approximately 35 - 40 attendees each year, and it is by far, one of the most dynamic business groups, which is why I already have the 2020 event in my calendar. This year I was asked to give two short presentations, and this weeks podcast episode is my first presentation, Why Niching Is The Future of Small Business. I want to point out that I recorded this episode using a lapel mic and iPhone, so the quality is less than optimal, but I enjoyed the LIVE aspect of the recording, and I hope you do as well. “There’s no such thing as true generalists, or if there is you won’t have heard of them”. - Michael Harf Today I discuss: Why it's dangerous to try and take on large companies or businesses head-on. Cheap & easy mass-marketing before the internet and social media Creating a niche is a smart small business strategy Knowing your client/customer/patient avatar Speaking the right language to the right avatar 5 Benefits of Getting This Right Save Money You can double down You get more A & B type clients Creates a happier work environment You can identify excellent opportunities quicker “Niching is not about selling one product; it’s about selling to one audience.” If you have any questions about this episode, especially in regards to using a LIVE recording for a podcast, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com Podcast Reviews If you enjoy listening to this podcast, it will put a big smile on my face if you left a review on iTunes, or wherever you like to listen to podcasts. Master Somnath Sikdar and Lonnie Beck are 6th and 5th Dan black belts in Tae Kwon Do and are co-owners of Dragon Gym in Exton, Pennsylvania. They have both appeared on this podcast previously on episodes 018 and 128. I have just spent three days with them in Tempe, Arizona at our annual business mastermind Business Black Ops, and during our many conversations, they mentioned they would shortly be kicking off their weekly podcast titled, 20 Minutes with Lonnie and Som. While I had them both in one place, I thought this was an excellent opportunity to learn more. On this episode we discuss: The opening of their third Dragon Gym Client engagement Why there needs to be a balance between diet and exercise, it's dangerous to go too far either way The importance of having a positive mindset Why you’re the sum of the five people, you hang around with most. To change your environment, you need to change the input The podcast will cover health and fitness, but also travel hacks, whisky and adult beverages. Final Tips: Som: You need to learn to talk to your subconscious mind. Before you go to bed at night, ask your subconscious mind the question, and while you're sleeping, it will search for the answer. Lonnie: You need to be conscious of the conversations you're having with yourself, the ones that go on in your head. Make sure you're talking positively. Also, when someone is talking, you need to listen to what they're saying, not the answer you want to give. Pause for two seconds, and then answer. Michael Jones is from Palm Beach, Florida, and after years of being a photographer, designer, and web developer - Mike recently invested into starting Media Zone, a podcast rental studio and media production company in Florida. The goal was to set up a studio so people could come in and record there own podcasts, videos, webinars and use it as content. Overcoming Content Obstacles The hardest part of creating content is the doing part. Too often, people spend way too much time thinking about equipment, software, settings, etc. all of which are obstacles to their creativity. At Media Zone, they can walk in and do it. All audio and video equipment with multiple camera angles are set up for them ready to go. One price covers both audio and video. Preproduction (macro-strategies, storyboarding, scripting) and post productions (editing, marketing, podcast training) are add ons if required. SponsorGo Another very cool idea developed by Michael Jones is SponsorGo.com, which is a website, sort of like Linkedin, but it's a way for athletes to connect with potential sponsors and advertisers. Carey Rome started as a CPA and advisor to business before starting his entrepreneurial journey in 2005. Today, Carey uses the software and system he's developed to coach and train executive teams to drive growth, add value and scale their businesses. Today we discuss: 1) The need for a clear vision. 2) The need for shared interlocking priorities. 3) The need for your team to know, it's not about the money. Firm beliefs that are loosely held You need to have a firm understanding of the path that you are on, but also not be stubborn to pivot when necessary. "The current path your on does not mean it's a safe path". What's the worst thing that can happen? When deciding for change, you need to think about what's the worst that can happen, then: Build a plan, so the worst thing does not happen Be okay if the worst thing happens Defaulting to core skills Many people will launch with a new idea, then go back to their core skills in default mode because there's comfort in that zone. Too Metric Driven Many CEO's and Executives get too metric-driven and lose sight of their vision and their WHY. If you want to ignite your team, you need to give them a reason. Your team don't care about making you rich; they want to know they're part of a bigger picture and they're helping and engaging with your customers. Standing still is not a plan Your company needs to grow, and it needs to figure out how to get things done. Maybe it needs to pivot because standing still and staying where you are right now is not a plan. At thirty years of age, Kristi Boles had the world at her feet. She was married with children and was running nine successful podiatry practices in Victoria, Australia; however, her health took a sudden downward turn resulting in heart surgery and a very long lay off from running her businesses. She was also diagnosed with Marfan's Syndrome. On this podcast episode, Kristi openly talks about her sudden, unexpected health issues and also how she has transformed her own life, and that of her patients by being more aware of the fundamentals of healing and good health. Taking Wednesday's Off Kristi takes off every Wednesday to rejuvenate, work on her business, with her team member and focus on business mentoring. She gets excited on Tuesday afternoons knowing she has the next day off. Episode 003 - Peter Wishnie calls this his Rainmaker Day. Marfans Syndrome & Dissected Aorta She was running nine podiatry businesses and working full time herself, which lead to burnout and aorta dissected. This health scare began her journey about better health and bringing this knowledge into practice. When you have a health scare, you get a whole new perspective about being a mother, a wife and a business owner. It doesn't take long to work out your priorities. This was when Kristi decided to consolidate her businesses and integrate nutrition into her life and businesses systems. It's All About Good Communication After her doctors gave her the all clear to go back to work Kristi realised they never listened to how she was feeling. Yes her heart was fine, but no one asked about her diet and overall health and wellbeing. She was not drinking enough water, had high stress, and even though she was eating well, she was missing the fundamentals of good health. She had migraines, fatigued, no energy to last the full day and needed an afternoon sleep. With good communication, you can set better treatment plans, and after listening to your patients, you will also know if they are capable of doing it. Journey of Self-Education So many people with chronic problems: Don’t have resources Do not understand the fundamentals of healing Need assistance in making better decisions themselves This is why Kristi started Allied Wellness - Fundamentals of Healing. It is a tool for practitioners to use with their patients and it's an evidence-based program, and it stays within the scope of practice. It's used as: A screening tool Patient education booklet Patient diary Patient referral tool Resource library If you're interested in using the program use Promo code PODLEGENDS discount As health practitioners, we’re all singing the same tune, which is why we all need to be working together for the patients' benefit. It shows we care. Keeping Patients Accountable When you check in with your patients about their hydration and diet, it will make them more conscious, and they will make an effort to do the right thing and improve. It's about empowered patients. Patients will start making the decisions themselves and success leads to more success. It also has a mirroring effect; we become that role model as well. Number One tip Truly listening to your patients is where it all starts. They know their body better than you, but it begins by asking the right questions. If you have any questions about this episode, podiatry marketing or one-on-one business mentoring, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com You can also contact Kristi Boles at Allied Wellness and don't forget the PROMO CODE - PODLEGENDS. Here's a simple truth; there is no magic when it comes to pulling profits out of your business; instead, there are five simple disciplines you need to follow, consistently. My guest, Brad Sugars, is the author of Pulling Profits Out of A Hat. This book is his 17th, and he is also the founder of ActionCOACH, which operates in over 70 countries, has more than 1,000 coaches around the world, and coaches 15,000+ business every week. "Get the right people you get the right business. Good people, great business". Going Global Brad Sugars believes that if you can succeed in Australia and you don't go global, you're insane. Australia is a difficult market, but once you crack the market you have the choice; be a big fish in a small pond, or you can be a small fish in a much bigger pond and reap the rewards. It's No Magic Pull profits out of business is not magic; there are five disciplines to follow consistently. They are called disciplines they are not the sorts of things you do just once and walk away. The Five Disciplines Strategy Business Development People Execution Mission Strategy The strategy is about the business model, where you look at the core of the business. There are four parts: Leverage - Do the work once and get paid forever Scalability - The next sale costs less and gets easier. You need to remove the human element of making the sale. Opportunity Size Marketability "If you have not sat down and designed the strategy for your business, you've probably got the wrong strategy for growth on a massive scale". Business Development Business Development is a combination of sales, marketing and customer service. People If you grow your people, they'll grow your business. No one has ever outperformed their training. Execution Execution is where the rubber hits the road; it's all about checklists. If you want consistent performance, and you want to scale your business, people need lists to follow. "If you can't explain a process simply, you probably don't know it well enough to teach". Mission What is the value of the company over and above the profits? Do your customers and team love being part of the business? People never leave a business; they leave the management of the business. Exponential Growth & Adding A Zero When all five disciplines are working together, you will get exponential growth, instead of percentage based profit growth. So instead of trying to grow your business by 15% why not think about increasing it 15 times. Once you get the fundamentals right, your goal should be to expand it to as many places as you can. You Get Paid 3 Ways Your business should be paying you three ways: Cashflow- you get paid wages or dividends from your profits. The business helps you invest a buys your assets. The business helps build a saleable asset. Your goal when you set up a business should be for it to run without you. 3 Reasons business Coaching Works The knowledge the coach has Accountability, the coach, brings to the table The coach can see the forest for the trees Customer Numbers How many new customers do you want per week? If you have too many, can you service them? If you have too few your not keeping your staff busy enough and this effects cash flow. Knowing your acquisition costs per customer is essential. If it costs $30 to buy a customer with marketing and the customer spends $100, you can afford as many customers as your service team can handle. Monday Morning Tip Make a list on Friday afternoon of what needs to be done on Monday. Don't wait until Monday, and to make it simple, repeat this process every afternoon for the next day. Last week my guest Scott Brown and I talked about the benefits of Networking the Right Way (Episode 163). Today's podcast is an extension of this networking subject. Last week I attended the Australian Podiatry Conference in Adelaide, and it reminded me why it is so important to participate in conferences, workshops and other live events. Yes, you can do your learning online and purchase virtual-tickets, but you miss so much by not attending live. Some of The Benefits/Reasons To Attend: If you want to have a voice in your profession, you must be seen. You need to connect with decision makers and going to events will put you on their radar. You will develop long-term relationships Meet Suppliers and view new equipment. It's the best way to see where your profession is heading. "Dig the well before you get thirsty" - Jordan Harbinger Too Expensive I’ve heard people say they cannot attend events, especially interstate or overseas because they’re too expensive, but they're the same people that you will see on Facebook sharing their photos from their latest overseas for holidays. It's really about priorities. Travel is great, but where does your profession fit on the scale of importance? If you cannot afford to pay for a full conference, maybe you should purchase a one day ticket instead. Conference HACK # A previous guest, Calvin Wayman (Episode 5 and 49) mentioned you do not have to pay to attend every event. You can turn up, hang around the lobby and bar and still reap the massive rewards by networking during the breaks. On this episode, I talk with a friend and local Cairns businessman Scott Brown from Allsigns Print and Design about the benefits of networking, how to network properly, and a few tips to make it an effective marketing platform for your business. There are many forms of networking, and it is essential to find the right networking group or organisation for you and your business because you want a return on your time and money investment. On this episode we discuss: BNI - Business Networking International Local Chamber of Commerce and other business groups Building credibility and delivering what you say Reputation management The power of giving Consistency: The more often people see you, the more you will be remembered. You benefit by helping others, especially new attendees, become better networkers. What Do You Do? - Be prepared for this question. How to STAND OUT Benefits of networking outside of your local region. "Be interested in what others do, and ask why they are there. Ask what do they want to get out of attending this event". Arrive Early & Stay Late Always arrive early at a networking event, don't leave it until everyone is about to be seated otherwise you'll only get to talk with the people at your table. And don't leave an event straight away. Plan to stay afterwards as there are benefits to hanging around and talking with people. You will build a stronger connection. "Networking is not about you; it's about how you can help others". Longevity & Consistency Meeting someone once is not enough, which is why you need to attend certain networking events multiple times. Consistency is how you build trusting relationships When you're talking with someone for the first time look for common interests, and if you do happen to get their contact details, make sure you follow them up afterwards with a quick email. Social Media Is Networking Most people think of networking as face-to-face meetings, but networking also includes social media platforms like Facebook. The only problem though is it's a one-way platform so you cannot see what people are thinking or feeling from your comments, especially in regards to politics. If you refer to voters as being stupid, ignorant or a DH for voting a particular way, you must remember these same people are on your friend lists, and it could have repercussions on your business. First Impressions Count Always look as professional as you can as the first impression does count, and do not, under any circumstances, get drunk or misbehave at a networking event. It will not go unnoticed. If you have any questions, you can email me directly at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can email Scott Brown at scott@allsignscairns.com.au or go to his website Allsigns Print & Design. On my Podiatry Legends Podcast, I was joined by Simon Bartold and his story and career were so interesting I thought it had to be shared on It's No Secret with Dr T., it was too good to leave a secret. Simon Bartold has worked with elite athletes for more than three decades, been to four Olympic Games, lectured in 42 countries, worked with Asics for 20-years and was head hunted by global footwear company Salomon to head up research, design and development of their road running range. Simon explained that he worked with some of the best sporting clubs and sports practitioners after graduating, and he did this for almost 15 years before he was paid a cent, it was all done for FREE. But as he puts it, you cannot put a price on the experience he gained. "If you want to learn be prepared to do it for nothing, that's just the way it works".
