Today's "F-isode" is the soundtrack to the upcoming indie game "MAKRANA" designed, developed, and scored by Matt Miller of Des Moines-based Chronarian Games. Matt sits in with St. John at Nerd Noise Studios for a Channel 2-style in-person conversation to discuss the soundtrack and various other matters of varying degrees of relevance. ;-) All tracks from the game MAKRANA, an upcoming game by Chronarian Games for PS5, XBSX and probably other platforms as well. All tracks composed, arranged, and performed by Matt Miller. Tracklist A1) "Production Disclaimer" Earcatcher (St. John on the now NNR-customary $400 Shure SM7B Mic) - 00:00:00 A2) "Episode Opener" Earcatcher (St. John on the now long-deprecated $100 AudioTechnica AT2020 Mic which was the mic St. John used on NNR from 2017-2022) - 00:00:59 01) "ZENITH" (game and track titles all capitalized for stylistic purposes by developer) a) Music - 00:01:12 b) Discussion and Top-of-Show Business (St. John and Matt sharing a single AT2020) - 00:04:50 02) "OBSERVE" a) Music - 00:29:39 b) Discussion (all voice recordings from here on out using that same single AT2020) - 00:33:27 03) "REFLECT" a) Music - 00:47:59 b) Discussion (our shortest conversation of the episode by far!) - 00:51:47 04) "QUADRANT" a) Music - 00:59:04 b) Discussion - 01:03:21 05) "DEVIATE" a) Music - 01:28:28 b) Discussion and End-of-Show Business - 01:33:51 B1) Outtakes - 02:04:08 Total Episode Runtime: 02:10:02 Matt and Chronarian Games can be found at www.chronariangames.com as well as on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, BlueSky, Mastodon, YouTube, and X. Special Thanks to Erin Miller, Nora Miller, and Jodee Wedgeworth (aka "St. Jodee") for making this recording session / episode possible. Produced in a mix of Audacity and Ardour in Fedora Linux on a 2023-model Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop (docked in a "desktop" context) using the aforementioned mics, a Focusrite 4i4 XLR-to-USB audio interface, and in the case of the SM7B, a Cloudlifter in-line signal booster. No alcohol was involved in this recording - however, I do think sleep deprivation may have been a factor! ;-) :-D Enjoy!!
Louie shares how to set up your first recording for your podcast. He gives a step by step guide on what you need to do and how to get a great podcast recording, whether that's a solo episode or you are interviewing. Want to get into podcasting but need a little push? Join our 3-day Podcasting event in Peterborough! – Get in touch for details! podcast@disruptivemedia.co.uk Episode Takeaways • Suggested Equipment You Will Need: Samsung Q2U microphone, a recorder like the Zoom PodTrak P4, Batteries, SD Card, 4GB SanDisk, XLR cable if using multiple microphones, Microphone stand and Headphones. For more detail on equipment head to episode ‘PODCAST EQUIPMENT 101: WHAT YOU NEED & WHY' • Think about the positioning of your microphone as this is key to the quality of your sound. • Always wear your headphones at all times, unless you have someone listening to the recording for you. • The ‘gain' of the microphone is essentially its sensitivity; the higher the dial, the more sensitive it is. Check that it is at a comfortable level by listening through your headphones. • It is better to be too quiet than too loud, as if you are too loud, you will distort your recording and it cannot be saved in post-production. BEST MOMENTS “You're going to listen to it, so make sure it sounds good to you” “Listen to the recording and change dials appropriately to make sure we are coming through clearly” “We're trying to avoid peaking or being too loud in the microphone” “If this is your first time plugging everything in, do expect some changes and tech faults” VALUABLE RESOURCES PODCAST EQUIPMENT 101: WHAT YOU NEED & WHY: https://traffic.megaphone.fm/USVL7437414704.mp3?updated=1753924125 Website Want to get into podcasting but need a little push? Verwendete Mikrofone: Rode NT-USB Mini, Beyerdynamic M201TG, SE8, AKG P170.
Emotiva refreshed their BasX A-Series amps to include XLR. Ascendo replaced their 80 inch sub with a 100 inch. And Tom and Rob both saw Superman! The post AV Rant #978: Automated Mansplaining appeared first on AV Rant.
In this episode, Louie tells you everything you need to know about equipment when recording your podcast. He shares what he would personally recommend to just get started, what provides value for money and what things you absolutely do not need for a beginner to intermediate set up. There are no affiliations here; this is just what we would recommend after working with hundreds of clients across many different types and styles of podcasts! Want to get into podcasting but need a little push? Join our 3-day Podcasting event in Peterborough! – Get in touch for details! podcast@disruptivemedia.co.uk Episode Takeaways • Samsung Q2U microphone. This sometimes will come in a kit. This microphone is very good value for money and can be used in any podcasting set up. • Zoom H4n and the Zoom PodTrak P4 are both good options for a recorder, but consider what input you need before deciding. • There are a lot of other things to consider with a recorder. Keep a close eye on the podcast for an episode Louie is recording on exactly this! • Batteries are important for recording; you will need more than you expect. • SD card options are almost endless, but Louie recommends a relatively high speed and large option, such as the 4GB SanDisk. • If you have multiple people speaking then you need multiple microphones. You will need an XLR cable to be able to plug them all in, you need one XLR cable per microphone. Consider the length of cable you might need. • Microphone stands will vary depending on your type of set up. Its main purpose is to get the microphone away from any surfaces that might vibrate or create unwanted feedback and noise. • Headphones are forward, you can use almost anything you have already, it's about monitoring the recording, so anyone who is being recorded needs to be wearing headphones. BEST MOMENTS “Think about what kind of podcast you are making.” “The worst thing that could happen is you guys run out of battery mid interview and don't realise it and don't have back up” “If you've got something that works, get it out, plug it in, see if it sounds ok. You don't have to go away and spend loads of money if you don't need to, use something if you've got it” VALUABLE RESOURCES Microphone: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samson-SAQ2U-Microphone-Recording-Pack/dp/B001R747SG?th=1 Recorder: https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/200806360890025--zoom-podtrak-p4?gad_source=4&gad_campaignid=17601953470&gbraid=0AAAAAD76p-1ub2Ja6py32W1LsdqRLx5bn&gclid=CjwKCAjwv5zEBhBwEiwAOg2YKNRDfzEkrcAWQ7Sw8ARzMOFBF1rtT_FSr9j77LnVeYfe1iUNC1KlKBoCnFIQAvD_BwE SD Card: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-MicroSDHC-Card-Label-Change/dp/B001C0DJL4 Website Want to get into podcasting but need a little push? [2025 Addendum] Our third and final rerun which we're releasing for July, and third and final rerun celebrating the memory of Masters of VGM (“MoVGM”), and our third and final of my bids to drum up excitement for the “VGM Hall of Fame” (“HoF”) series spearheaded by Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself (as well as any other shows which have elected to join us in the time since my drafting this on July 2nd), we look, at last, to MoVGM's final year: 2024. The Theme of 2024's MoVGM was a focus on female and LGBTQIA+ (particularly trans) composers. And Nerd Noise Radio's contribution for this year was a Channel 1 featuring the soundtrack to the game Celeste, composed by the fabulous trans composer Lena Raine. The pride connection goes even deeper, though, as the game was written and designed by Maddie Thorson, who is also trans, and upon whom the [also also trans] protagonist, Madelaine is also based. From a production standpoint, this is going to be pretty close to on par with a 2025 production as it is using all the same recording hardware, and most of the same production techniques, but may not quite match the current crop due to my using less sophisticated monitoring headphones resulting in a final mix which might be a tad on the “hot” side. Either way, it's a showcase of great people making great music to a great game with a great message. So, we are quite pleased to present C1E86: “The Celeste Soundtrack” (originally released 06/15/2024). Enjoy ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is C1E86 for Soundtrack Saturday, June 15th, 2024. In Podcast Playbook (Part 2), Kelly Kennedy rips the fluff off podcast tech and gives you the real, unfiltered truth about the gear that actually matters. If you're serious about launching a podcast that sounds world-class, this episode is your blueprint. From computers and microphones to audio interfaces and headphones, Kelly breaks down what to buy, why it matters, and how to build a pro-level setup without wasting a dollar. No gimmicks. No jargon. Just clarity and confidence to build your studio the right way—whether you're in a spare bedroom or a full production space. But this isn't just about gear—it's about showing up like a pro from day one. Kelly explains why audio quality is make-or-break, why your computer is the real unsung hero, and how the right setup positions you for long-term podcast success. This episode will cut months off your learning curve and set you up to hit record with power and purpose. If you want to build a podcast that's built to last, Episode 251 is non-negotiable.Key Takeaways: 1. Your computer is the most critical piece of podcasting equipment—editing and production demand serious processing power.2. A gaming laptop or desktop is often the best choice due to its high-end GPU, CPU, RAM, and SSD performance.3. Sound quality can make or break your show; even great content won't save you if the audio hurts people's ears.4. USB microphones are great for beginners, but XLR microphones paired with an interface deliver far superior sound and control.5. A quality audio interface like the Rodecaster Pro 2 allows for zero-latency monitoring, clean gain control, and pro-level audio routing.6. Headphones are non-negotiable—they prevent feedback, help monitor sound live, and allow you to edit with precision.7. Bluetooth headphones introduce latency—always go wired when producing or editing your show.8. You don't need a full studio to sound professional—a home setup with the right gear can match broadcast quality.9. Start with a setup you can grow into—XLR systems are scalable and used by nearly all professional podcasters.10. Equipment helps—but consistency, connection, and your message are what truly build a great podcast.Ready to build something that lasts? The Catalyst Club isn't just another business community—it's your backstage pass to real growth. Today's broadcast is C1E96 for Theme Thursday, June 26th, 2025 (happy 27th "dating" anniversary to my dear wife, St. Jodee). Today's theme is a collection of music from games in my own personal Steam Library – planned, curated, produced, and distributed entirely on/from the Steam Deck (SteamOS desktop mode)! A collection dominated by music from indie games from the 2010's and 2020's and peppered with music from bigger-named games from the 1990's and 2000's and contains not one, but TWO chill zones, which collectively account for almost half of the mixtape runtime! Special thanks to Professor Tom from Shujin Acadamy VGM Club podcast for helping me settle on episode title. Other candidate titles I'd been considering included "Gimme Steam" (which was the working title), "Steam Punk", and "All Hands on Deck". Lastly, this is our debut episode on Terra Player! Today's broadcast is C1E95 for VibeOff Vrijdag, May 9th, 2025. Today's broadcast will be a one-time-only special twist on a FaceOff Friday, where, instead of comparing different versions of the same track against each other, we're comparing pairs (and occasionally trios) of different songs against each other which either have similar movements, or melodies, or instrumentation, or simply just vibes and asking you, the listener to not only tell us which one you like better, but whether or not the comparisons are even valid, and how strongly or weakly if so. So, in lieu of an 8th and final FaceOff Friday episode, Nerd Noise Radio is pleased to present: VibeOff Vrijdag (Vrijdag = the Dutch word for Friday). This week on CLIPPED, I'm refreshing one of the most popular episodes from the past year—updated with fresh insights for 2025. It's all about how to start a podcast in 2025. If you're thinking about starting a podcast this year, this is the perfect place to start. I'm sharing 12 things I wish I knew when I started, including a few new lessons I've learned recently. From prepping and planning to editing, video SEO, and finding your voice, this episode is your blueprint for launching smarter. Whether you're starting a podcast for the first time, or rebooting an old one, these tips will help you avoid the common traps and build a more sustainable show. This week's episode of The Pro Audio Suite dives headfirst into the world of budget audio gear, exploring whether cheaper equipment has actually improved or if it's still just average kit with fancy marketing. Here are some key highlights and insights from the discussion: Budget Gear: Better or Still Rubbish? Robustness & Quality: The crew revisits the Rode NT1's evolution—from early plastic models to today's sturdy iterations. They ponder its surprising collectability today. User-Friendliness: A cheeky chat unfolds about how budget gear manufacturers should assume nothing when it comes to user knowledge, advocating for painfully obvious product instructions, especially with mics like Rode's NT1. Headphones: Still the Achilles Heel? Consensus emerges around headphones as one area where low-budget options haven't improved as dramatically as microphones. The crew reckons that decent studio cans rarely dip below the $100 mark without significant compromises in sound and build quality. Austrian Audio gets a shout-out for their entry-level headphones offering decent quality, but it's noted that paying a little more generally delivers much better audio. Interfaces and Converters: Robbo's downsized rig is highlighted, having moved from larger interfaces to compact solutions like the SSL2 and the Centrance PASport VO. An important insight shared is that cheap interfaces often share internal converter chips with much pricier gear, meaning the sonic differences can be surprisingly subtle. Bargain Finds and Bargain Fails: Andrew points out the rise in cost of entry-level interfaces from brands like Focusrite, thanks to feature-creep. The group chats about bargain-basement gear flooding Amazon, discussing surprising finds like a $30 dual XLR-to-USB-C interface cable. Robbo humorously advises caution, noting that certain inexpensive gear—particularly cables and mic arms—can still be absolute rubbish. Chinese Clones and Cheap Accessories: George brings up affordable Chinese-made hardware like camera mounts and mic arms, now significantly cheaper yet surprisingly robust compared to premium brands. The "magic arm" clamp is a notable budget win. However, the consensus firmly recommends against skimping on headphones and cables. Quality connectors from Neutrik and Mogami cables are touted as essentials worth investing in. Plug-ins: Stock vs. Premium vs. AI Debate surrounds stock plug-ins vs premium offerings, questioning the necessity of higher-priced plug-ins from brands like FabFilter. Healthy skepticism about AI-enhanced plug-ins and noise reduction is expressed, particularly regarding Adobe Podcast's AI noise reduction. Emulators & Mic Modeling: Opinions split on whether mic emulation is beneficial or just a feel-good factor. Townsend Sphere and Antelope Audio's mics spark a conversation about whether emulated models truly rival their inspirations. Final Thoughts: Cheaper gear today often does punch above its price tag compared to the past, especially microphones. But there remain clear lines where quality is non-negotiable (headphones, connectors, and build quality in general). Ultimately, the episode reinforces the idea that good engineering practice and knowledge still win the day, regardless of budget constraints. It's another lively, opinionated, and informative chat from Robbo, Andrew Peters, George "The Tech" Whittam, and Robert Marshall, brought to you by their sponsors Tribooth and Austrian Audio. If you're keen to catch the full flavour and all the banter, check out the episode at theproaudiosuite.com. A big shout out to our sponsors, Austrian Audio and Tri Booth. This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. In here: 1- Carrying weight more safely - When picking up weight in front of your body, embrace the core (tighten the abdomen); - it gives you more stability, so you are more capable to do the task. 2- Microphone types a) by connection i) USB: connects directly to the computer, in the universal serial bus port. Plug and use! ii) XLR: needs a USB audio interface , with XLR input, to connect to the computer. There are more options of microphones and, if you can spend on an interface, quality is generally better. XLR connectors: female (left) and male. ( Image by Michael Piotrowski / Wikimedia Commons – CC BY-SA 3.0 .) b) by diaphragm i) condenser: captures the voice in more detail, with deeper bass, more detailed treble… Most of the USB microphones uses this technology. As a disadvantage, they catch even minimal sound details of the environment, vibrating with little sound waves around, even distant. That's why you might get as recording result the clear details of noise from the street, or reverberation (echo) of an untreated room if you use it without the best environment. (If it's ok for you even in these situations, it's a merit of other factors, not a merit of the condenser diaphragm) . Usage : A favorite of singers in studio, among several other applications. As you can see on videos of professionals singing, one don't talk on top of it (which might produce a low and undesired muffled sound) but on the side — and on the correct side, because most models of microphones have a cardioid pollar pattern. A side-adress microphone (captures the sound from one specific side), condenser-type. (Image by Arthur Fox / https://mynewmicrophone.com/diaphragm.) ii) dynamic: responds to the audio source (voice, instrument) very close to the diaphragm, do not capture sound more than some centimeters (or some inches) away. It's the best for amateur use, or in a room without acoustic treatment. Usage : Musicians performing live use dynamic microphones so the instruments (and crowd) around don't get their sound amplified by this artist's microphone. Radios prefer dynamic mics, because it goes to a more impactful voice, rejects eventual sounds from noisy mixers or keyboards nearby that the radio host might be operating. A top-adress microphone (captures the sound from the top), dynamic-type. (Image by Arthur Fox / https://mynewmicrophone.com/diaphragm.) The RE20 from Electro-Voice (not the photo above) is a favorite of radio stations, in part for being dynamic, in part for reducing the proximity effect (that is, the sound “exploding” when the source gets too near to the capsule) because of its technology, named Variable-D. A word about captation pattern (no, the name is polar pattern): it says about the directional response. For example, some are omnidirectional (captures sound equally from all the sides); most of them are cardioid, capturing the sound coming from the front (the speaker, the instrument directed to it), but rejects sound from the rear. 3- Microsoft Word (or Libreoffice Writer) “templates” - So, you do use templates for text archives, to facilitate the doing of commonly used documents. To know what to change, you highlight in yellow, right? Or do you put the text in red? - Well, my recommendation is to use, instead, * or {} : asterisk, curly brackets or any other symbol that you can type easily and not use as text in any document. . So you can easily find what is the part you have to change or write, and only delete the * when you do that part. At the end, you can check if there is any * remaining, if not, the document is ready. - So, isnt' it the same with colors, to indicate what to change in the document? . No. For formatting you need to use your vision (and may lose something) and have to remove the formatting manually. It's possible to use the Find tool, but not as easily as finding a character. To illustrate: print of an official document template for the bidding process for information and communication technology services. Link: https://www.gov.br/agu/pt-br/composicao/cgu/cgu/modelos/licitacoesecontratos/14133/bens-e-servicos-de-tic). Changes to be made were marked in red and italics, but brackets [] and “XXXX” were used also. - Ah: . there are forms, real templates you can use, but, hey, if you're part of the 90% that saves “templates” in the common format (.docx, .odt) and does not use the very special tools for the template kind of document, knowing and using some tips like this is ok and is satisfying. - Not on templates, but in editing, I have worked on the revision of books using this, to know where to come back later to check, or where I have stopped on some day, with good result. Extra: give a look on the comment options, they are easy to use and practical, see if you adapt with it for your necessities. 4- A recooording tip - Always record at least 3 seconds, totally quiet, before starting the show (that is, before talking). This “silence” is the room tone, which you may use: . as adequate silence in the editing proccess (in place of a cut part), or . you may take it for noise reduction profile IF needed, or . which you can only delete in the end if you don't find what to do with it. - Recording knowledge number 2 and final: save an uncompressed version of the raw of your recording, and keep it intact. Work on copies, keep the original saved as .wav (or, if prefered, .flac). 5- Permissions for apps Be careful with free apps. Don't install any and everything. See their permissions. - Ads? Why more things being offered to you, trying to give insatisfaction? If there is an option without ads, you may prefer. . Also, the ad system of some apps uses more battery (downloading different ads, sending more information of you to personalize ads, using the notification system, meaning running in the background). - In-app purchases: with it, you'll get angry with an app, because it's not free to do what you thought it would do when you installed. And it may use recurring payments, pay for each feature, and worst, you don't know beforehand. If it's to pay, prefer the ones you buy (once) in the download and has no in-app purchases. - With apps in that you input your data (like e2ee, or “e2ee” communicating, or browsers): see permissions, what data they keep and share, or at least choose open source and well-renowed developers. - Please don't download any app that promises performance enhancement. The system (Android or iOS) is already optimized for what it is, third party apps can do little or, most commonly, nothing, and is more space and features loading your system. . Want speed? Delete the apps that are not absolutely necessary (I'm talking to you, solitaire game with access to internet and that notifies you to play from time to time), or disable notifications of every app and put them to deep sleep (so they don't run in background, only when you open them). - So much said, let's take it in one sentence: install only what needed, and see permissions and ads before choosing. 6- Mobile phone battery - You use your phone all day and still have more than 20% of battery? Or recharges 2 times a day? (or 3!) - If it's the last option, and your phone is less than 3 years old and you never use uncertified chargers, you can try to have a worry-free all-day phone usage doing what said before: disabling apps that run in the background (uninstall, or put to deep sleep). It's a one by one process, but once for all. . If it's this way because of intense use, nothing to do; enjoy your product! ✶ Final word We did not enter on details: no explanations or reasons abounding, no. We didn't even go to number 7 , which would be perfection ; because I have not a seventh good idea. Only the bits of what I think I know & that I value as precious. A hug! bye! As the end of the year is here again, we're finally doing it: we're ranking every plug and connector in existence, or at least all the ones we can think of. Join us as we evaluate the relative merits in multiple categories -- like ease of use, reliability, versatility, and that satisfying tactile X factor -- of everything from BNC to XLR, Apple's Lightning and old 30-pin dock connector, DB-15 (you know, VGA), the enormous pile of USB types, and more. Will we get through the whole list in one week? Uh, sure!Follow along with pictures and info about all these connectors with these links:The Cable Bible: https://amiaopensource.github.io/cable-bible/Recompute's port roundup: https://recompute.co.zw/buying-guides/a-complete-guide-of-every-type-of-computer-port/ Support the Pod! Following up on our last Great Search for a DMX / XLR connector, our next step is to find a DMX transceiver. We started by looking at official and common DMX shields for Arduino since we know there's a ton out there, including the semi-official TinkerKit brand (https://web.archive.org/web/20140727121929/http://www.tinkerkit.com/dmx-master-shield/). These boards all use the MAX485 (https://www.digikey.com/short/q7mbb9bj) and XLR connectors. They often *don't* have isolation or transient voltage protection. While the MAX485 is readily available, let's look at some other options that might work out for our design, especially if they have isolation built in! Episode Notes Airports worldwide are investing large amounts in tech upgrades for a projected huge increase in passenger traffic. Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes profiles five U.S. airports making upgrades. JFK Airport shared plans earlier this year for its new terminal 6, which will include digital concierge services as well as a self check-in and bag drop. The airport said its new terminal 1 would feature a state-of-the-art baggage handling system. San Francisco International Airport has started working on a $2.6 billion project to modernize terminal 3, which will include automated bag drop stations and new security checkpoints. And Pittsburgh International Airport is building a new terminal with more streamlined ticketing stations and baggage claim systems. Next, Qantas unveiled details about its all-new aircraft on Thursday. Airlines Editor Gordon Smith takes a look at the Airbus A321XLR, which the Australian carrier will start receiving next April. Qantas says the aircraft — which Airbus has coined the “XLR” or “Xtra Long Range” — will open up direct domestic and short-haul international routes. It's a direct replacement for Qantas' existing Boeing 737s, which are due to leave the carrier's fleet over the next decade. The XLR can fly around 1,500 nautical miles further than the outgoing 737s. Finally, Edinburgh's city council recently approved a proposal to levy Scotland's first tourist tax. Local officials are worried the tax could make the city less competitive, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam. The “Transient Visitor Levy” will charge guests staying at paid accommodations in Edinburgh 5% per room night. Capped at seven consecutive days, the tax will go into effect in 2026. Edinburgh officials will use the funds for affordable housing, infrastructure and destination management, among other areas. Habtemariam notes some tourism businesses are concerned the new tax will make the Scottish capital more expensive for tourists. Marc Crothall, chief executive of the Scottish Tourism Alliance, described Edinburgh's new tax as a contentious matter, citing concerns about the possible impact on future bookings. Summary In this episode of Blind Level Tech, the hosts discuss microphones for podcasting and voiceover recording. They start by talking about the mics they are currently using, including the Audio-Technica AT2020 condenser microphone and the CAD GXL2200. They explain the difference between condenser and dynamic microphones and the best use cases for each. They also discuss built-in microphones in devices like laptops and phones, noting that while they can be convenient, they often lack in audio quality. The hosts then explore different types of microphones in various price ranges, including USB mics, XLR mics, and headset mics. They provide recommendations for affordable microphones and caution against using headset mics for professional audio work. They also mention the Blue Yeti microphone as a versatile option with multiple polar patterns. They cover popular options like the Blue Yeti and the Shure MV7, as well as higher-end models like the AKG C414. They also mention the importance of considering the sound profile, polar patterns, and durability when choosing a microphone. The conversation concludes with a discussion about their favorite sandwiches. Takeaways Condenser microphones are good for picking up audio from the room, while dynamic microphones are better for dialogue and close-up recording. Built-in microphones in devices like laptops and phones often lack in audio quality and are not recommended for professional audio work. Affordable microphones in the $20 to $60 price range can significantly upgrade audio quality, with options like Logitech, Zeal Sound, and CAD microphones. Headset mics are convenient but may pick up vibrations from the head and produce unpleasant audio quality. They are not recommended for voiceovers. The Blue Yeti microphone is a versatile option with multiple polar patterns and a built-in sound card for monitoring and adjusting audio levels. Proper microphone placement and technique are important for achieving good audio quality. There are many microphones available for podcasting and voiceover work in the $100 to $250 price range. The Shure MV7 is a popular choice among podcasters and offers both XLR and USB options. Other options in this price range include the Blue Yeti, Audio-Technica, and Sennheiser microphones. Higher-end microphones like the Lewitt Ray and AKG C414 offer advanced features and exceptional sound quality. Consider factors like sound profile, polar patterns, and durability when choosing a microphone. Rode microphones are also worth considering for their range of podcasting options. One of the most common questions I'm asked is about the gear needed to begin podcasting. I will honestly admit that it's a difficult decision when you're just starting because you want reliable equipment that does a great job, but you are also hesitant to break the bank for it. As you progress, several factors complicate the choices of gear, such as how you conduct guest interviews and whether you have a co-host. In today's session, I'm walking you through four common podcasting scenarios and the gear I recommend for each. All of this information is compiled in the Buying Guide found inside our Healthcasters course. You'll Learn:My gear setup as I started the STC podcast in 2015 with a teeny, tiny budgetMy advice for beginning podcasters: “Don't go out and purchase all the gear I mention, but go with the basics as you focus on building and honing your storytelling and interviewing skills.”Four podcasting scenarios and the recommended equipment:1- A single host with solo episodes and guest interviews via the Internet.I recommend the Samsung Q2U dynamic mic, Koolertron mic shock mount, OnStage foam windscreen, pop filter, mic stand, and Rode PSA mic arm.2- A single host who interviews guests in person. In addition to the basic equipment in Scenario #1, I recommend a 2-3 camera set-up (very expensive!), Calendly to coordinate interviews, 2 tabletop stands/mic arms, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for recording, and XLR cables.3- Co-hosts who connect and interview guests via the Internet.I recommend the basic equipment in Scenario #1 for EACH co-host, along with a recording platform, like Zoom or Ecamm Live.4- Co-hosts who get together in-person to interview guests in person. This is a dream set-up, but it is very expensive and complicated. I recommend the basic equipment in Scenario #1 for EACH co-host and guest (Yes, that is at least three of everything!), along with the Rodecaster Pro (the Rodecaster Pro II or Pro Mini), 32 GB SD card, and XLR cables. My advice: “Start with a lean setup. Try Riverside free now: https://creators.riverside.fm/PodcastersPodcast & Use code: Podcast15 for an exclusive 15% off. In this episode, Ash and Kane give an overview of how to create high-quality virtual podcasts. From software recommendations to equipment essentials, they give all the information you need to help you create professional-sounding episodes from anywhere! Including practical tips on creating the ideal recording environment, this episode is packed with valuable insights that will take your virtual podcasting game to the next level. KEY TAKEAWAYS Riverside is the recommended software for high-quality virtual podcast recording, maintaining audio and video quality better than alternatives like Zoom. Ideal equipment setup includes a dynamic microphone (XLR or USB), ring lights or softboxes for lighting, and using your phone as the camera for the best video quality. Both the host and guest should wear headphones to prevent audio bleed and echoing during the recording. Record in a quiet, indoor space with soft furnishings to improve sound quality and use a plain background for a professional look. Position yourself properly on camera, leaving adequate headspace and space on both sides for optimal framing in video clips. Minor details like fake plants, bookshelves, or acoustic panelling can enhance the visual appeal of your recording space. BEST MOMENTS "If you want the very best quality, you would get a dynamic microphone, like an XLR mic, like a Shure one that plugs into an external recorder, like a PodTrack P4, which is what we use in our studios, that then plugs into the computer, but it saves locally to the PodTrack, that's for the very best quality." "No green screens, no virtual backgrounds. Yeah, that was all sarcasm, by the way. In case you couldn't tell. For those American listeners, it was us joking. So the idea is make it as plain and boring as possible." "If you have animals or worse, children, tell them to f*ck off. That's a clip. Right? They can go. Please don't do it in a bathroom, conservatory, or kitchen or when you're getting your hair done. Or on a building site, or on a beach. We're definitely not listing places that clients have sent us recordings from." (0:17) Introducing Robert Marshall from Source Elements and someone audio post Chicago. (0:22) Darren Robert Robertson from Voodoo Radio Imaging, Sydney. (0:25) Next to the VO stars, George the Tech Whittem from LA. (0:28) And me, Andrew Pinkers, voiceover talent and home studio guy. (0:32) Line up, man. Here we go. (0:36) And welcome to another pro audio suite. Thanks to Triboose. (0:39) Don't forget that code, T-R-I-P-A-P 200 to get $200 off your booth. (0:45) And Austrian Audio, making passion heard. (0:48) We've had a bit of a passionate response to our new Facebook group, (0:52) which is the pro audio suite podcast group. (0:56) And Rubbo threw up a survey about microphones, (1:00) which one people would like to use and do use and don't use. (1:04) Yeah, I just, I kind of figured a robust discussion about microphones is always well received. (1:10) So I figured I'd start one and it's only a small sample because we've only just started the group. (1:15) But some of the results sort of had me thinking a bit. (1:18) So basically what I did was I did a poll. (1:20) And I didn't go with my favorites. (1:23) I just went with the microphones that as a freelance audio engineer, (1:27) when I'm walking into other studios, I come across a lot. (1:30) And I stuck them up there with an option for people to put their own up there as well. (1:34) So the ones I put up were the SM7B, the NT1A, the TLM103, AT2020, 416, of course. (1:43) And that was about it. (1:44) And then left it open for people to sort of put their own up. (1:48) And the question was, which one's your best mate? (1:51) So what's the microphone that you choose in your studio? (1:55) Now, I've got to be honest, I kind of did figure that the 416 would feature fairly heavily and it has. (2:02) I mean, the 7B sort of comes in fairly close and the TLM103 are exactly the same in terms of response. (2:11) But then some of the ones in the comments were sort of interesting as well. (2:15) Well, the one I thought was interesting was someone jumped on to Bill. (2:21) Now I've got to try and get his name right. (2:25) Bill Answa. Is that right? (2:26) Answa. (2:27) Yeah, I think it's Bill Answa. (2:28) Anyway, sorry, Bill, if I got your name wrong. (2:31) He is using the Austrian audio OC18 into an SSL2. (2:36) Well, someone's been listening to our podcast. (2:38) And is he using the 4K button? (2:40) He says. (2:41) Yes, he does. (2:42) Yeah, he goes, yes, indeed. (2:44) Thanks for teaching me that. (2:44) Yeah, and Phil writes on the Lewitt, which doesn't feature fairly. (2:49) Yeah, we mentioned it on the show, but I don't see it a lot. (2:55) What else was the other one? (2:56) What's the 875R? What's that, a shotgun? (3:00) It's an excellent, excellent bargain shotgun mic. (3:05) Is it? (3:05) Right. (3:05) It's the one that you recommend, George, isn't it? (3:07) It's so good. (3:08) Like, it's only Achilles heel is that it's not the quietest mic. (3:12) Self-noise is, you know, not as good as a 416. (3:15) But it's a damn good substitute. (3:18) You know, it sounds similar. (3:20) I have one. (3:21) So one of these days we'll pull it out and we'll compare it. (3:23) Yeah, I'd love to hear it. (3:25) But it sounds similar. (3:26) It's not quite as large. (3:28) It's sort of like a short shotgun. (3:30) Is the polar pattern as tight as a 416? (3:32) I would say no. (3:33) I would definitely say it's not as tight at all. (3:37) It's a more, nowhere near sophisticated mic. (3:40) It doesn't have that very complex line tube interference design. (3:45) Yeah. (3:45) So anyway, it's a very simple mic, but it just sounds good. (3:49) And they're always under 200 US, 175 maybe. (3:53) So that one's a... (3:54) 169 B? (3:55) That one's a great value. (3:56) And we've been recommending it a lot to folks who want a stunt mic. (4:00) Well, this is an interesting one from Jeff Berlin. (4:03) Obviously the obligatory 416. (4:06) But he also has a Bosch or Soundalux U195. (4:10) I don't know that microphone. (4:12) What do you say? (4:12) I have a Soundalux U99. (4:15) And it is basically a clone of a U67 using an actual EF86 tube. (4:22) And the Soundalux mics became Bach. (4:25) Yeah, that's right. (4:27) Yeah. (4:28) And they are pretty high-end mics. (4:30) They got bought by Universal Audio. (4:32) Yeah, that's correct. (4:33) Oh, really? (4:33) Yeah. (4:33) Wow, that's too bad? (4:35) Is that too bad? (4:36) I don't know. (4:36) I don't know. (4:37) I mean... (4:38) It's kind of weird. (4:38) I thought they bought Sphere microphones. (4:40) They had to buy all of them microphone companies. (4:42) So I threw all the mics that were in the comments, I think, into the survey. (4:46) So it's easier to see. (4:49) And it's going to make it easier for people to continue voting. (4:51) But did you see anything that surprised you here? (4:55) Not me. (4:55) Nothing really. (4:56) I mean, there's certainly plenty of ones that you don't see regularly in professional studios, (5:01) not that that means jack shit. (5:02) Because in a professional studio, you're looking for a workhorse that will do a whole bunch (5:07) of things, I guess, especially in post-production houses, as opposed to music studios. (5:13) There's just no representation of a PZM mic here. (5:16) Come on. (5:17) There's no crown PZMs? (5:19) Oh, man. (5:21) Like, turn my wall into the microphone. (5:22) Yeah, that's right. (5:24) The MK4, the Sennheiser, what's an MK4? (5:27) It's like a lower end shotgun. (5:29) No, actually, no. (5:30) It's their entry-level side address LCD. (5:34) Large diaphragm. (5:35) Oh, okay. (5:36) Large diaphragm. (5:37) It's like, I mean, I think in character, it's somewhere very similar to a TLM102 or (5:43) 103. (5:44) It's in that range. (5:45) Is it kind of like the AKG perception? (5:48) Kind of. (5:48) It's like that zone. (5:50) But I mean, it's not that cheap. (5:51) It's still a $400 mic. (5:54) I think it's more like a two. (5:56) Oh, it's used. (5:57) Maybe it's used $200. (5:59) Yeah, maybe. (6:00) I mean, Guitar Center's got them, but maybe those are used. (6:02) But Sweetwater's trying to sell it for $400. (6:05) How much is an AKG perception? (6:07) LDC. (6:08) I don't know. (6:08) They're quite a bit cheaper, like 200 range. (6:13) So, yeah, the Sennheiser MK4 is not bad at all. (6:15) There's quite a few people who have those. (6:17) Well, speaking of Sennheiser, just as an aside, Chris McCallum, who we've (6:22) had on the show, he's probably one of Australia's best known location (6:25) recordists, put up a post about his Sennheiser. (6:30) He says, I have an interesting occurrence with a 10 year old Sennheiser (6:35) MKH8060 shotgun mic. (6:36) One day it stopped working without warning and only issued a static (6:40) frequency. (6:41) I've taken it to Sennheiser's service and they've discovered that they are (6:44) unable to open the mic as the special screws holding the electronics (6:47) inside the barrel are completely seized. (6:49) They say they can see no sign of corrosion, but are unable to open (6:52) the mic, sort of shoring it open. (6:54) What has surprised me is they have offered to take possession of this (6:57) mic and offer me a brand new one for an exchange of $700. (7:01) These mics now retail for well over $2,300. (7:04) So, I'm very happy with the outcome. (7:07) So, this is now the second new exchange I've had since the (7:10) original purchase, as there was a recall in the very early serial (7:13) numbers. (7:13) So, it was replaced then as well. (7:15) I can't really fault their response and commitment to their brand. (7:18) So, hey, that's... (7:18) Did you see my response on that? (7:21) No. (7:22) What's yours? (7:22) What did you say on that? (7:23) But they're charging him... (7:24) I was the original recording of the screws falling out. (7:30) They're basically saying they'll do the repair for $700. (7:33) So, they're basically giving him a brand new mic for $700, yeah. (7:36) As the repair? (7:37) As the repair, I guess, yeah. (7:39) I'd say yes if it came with a one year warranty. (7:41) Right. (7:42) At least. (7:42) Or whatever the new warranty is, I guess. (7:45) It's a bit of a bummer though. (7:47) But yeah. (7:48) I had a similar thing. (7:49) I actually had a similar thing happen with my 416. (7:52) It was an old one and it was playing up, (7:55) I sent it into Sennheiser and they kind of said, (7:57) look, we can fix it, but it's probably going to cost, (8:00) you know, almost the same price as a... (8:02) Probably about half the cost of a new one. (8:05) And then they... (8:06) Yeah. (8:07) But then they sort of said, look, you can fix it, (8:09) but we can't guarantee it because it is old (8:11) and there's components could let go. (8:13) Then did me a cracking deal on a new 416. (8:17) Nice. (8:17) As long as the mic wasn't cracking, that's a good deal. (8:19) Yeah, exactly. (8:20) Well, the first one was, the second one wasn't. (8:23) Are you making fun of this London accent? (8:25) So, that's 8060 is a step up from the 416 in terms of... (8:28) Yeah, it looks like it. (8:29) Yeah, yeah. (8:30) Better signal response, maybe. (8:32) Yeah. (8:33) The 8000 series is sort of their... (8:35) That's their new flagship line. (8:38) You know, small diaphragm mics in the head. (8:40) Did Chris mention it in the episode when we had him on? (8:42) I feel like he did. (8:44) I feel like he's sort of go to mine. (8:46) Yeah, yeah. (8:46) But see, Chris doesn't have a microphone locker. (8:49) He has a microphone walk-in wardrobe. (8:52) Yes, exactly. (8:53) That's right. (8:55) Yeah. (8:56) He's the Imelda Marcos of microphones. (8:59) I think Sennheiser makes a sight address version in that 8000 series. (9:03) It's multi-pattern and it's like $4000, (9:06) but it's supposed to be really excellent. (9:08) You know what I'm talking about? (9:09) 800. (9:10) Is it the 800? (9:11) Is that what it is? (9:11) It's a really odd little mic. (9:13) It's very small. (9:16) And let's see if I can share. (9:18) No, it's a multi-pattern. (9:19) It's not the little small tiny ones. (9:21) I know, but it's really small. (9:23) I mean, I saw it at NAB. (9:25) I was like, oh my God, that thing's tiny. (9:28) I think I saw your video. (9:29) I'm looking at the MKH 800 Twin. (9:34) This is a new model of microphone they just launched. (9:36) This is a different animal completely from what you're describing. (9:40) This one's 3200. (9:43) And it is their variable pattern mic where you just simply... (9:48) What's that? (9:49) MKH 800 Twin? (9:51) Yeah, this is it right here. (9:52) I have it on screen, I think. (9:54) Maybe. (9:54) There it goes. (9:56) There it is. (9:57) Look at that sexy baby. (9:58) Quite spendy. (9:59) This picture doesn't show... (10:01) Well, you see how small it is by... (10:02) Because you can see the XLR barrel. (10:05) The tail, it's small. (10:06) It almost looks like a mic port pro, the original one. (10:09) It is like the old KM86. (10:13) The Neumann KM86, which is a side address, multi-pattern, small diaphragm mic that people go kind of gaga over. (10:21) Well, that's quite a spendy mic, 3200. (10:24) Which is two symmetrical push-pull... (10:28) It's a dual diaphragm. (10:31) Is it dual output too? (10:33) Like, could we use it with our... (10:34) Yeah, so the way it works is you simply pot up and down the other capsule, and that's how you go. (10:40) So it's like... (10:41) But do you have a separate output of the other capsule so we can run it into our new software that you and I have purchased? (10:47) Right. (10:49) Yeah, it is quite a spendy mic. (10:53) You know, it's so funny. (10:54) I have video of me interviewing the Sennheiser rep at NAB on YouTube, and someone's like, (10:59) Hey, isn't that Julian Kraus standing right behind him? (11:05) It was Julian Kraus standing behind you. (11:08) It was, it was like I missed an opportunity to chat with him. (11:11) Oh, I saw it when I saw your video. (11:13) I saw him in the background. (11:14) He was having a look at the mics as well. (11:15) Is that Julian Kraus? (11:17) I'm like, son of a gun, it is. (11:19) There are so many YouTubers at NAB, of course, you know. (11:22) I saw a couple, they were always like in transit, you know, but I would love to send hello to Julian (11:28) and thank him for his unbelievable commitment to very, very consistent and dry videos about audio interfaces. (11:38) He's like the equivalent of the Sahara desert for YouTubers. (11:42) It is so freaking dry. (11:43) Yeah, but it's useful. (11:46) And big. (11:46) You know, we're the polar opposite, really, aren't we? (11:50) Exactly. (11:51) And in fact, on that note, if you do want to vote for one of these microphones or tell us what you have, (11:56) go to your Facebook and or the Facebook, as I saw people call it, and look for the Pro Audio Suite podcast group (12:05) and you'll find the thread down there somewhere. (12:07) Not the page, the group. (12:08) Yeah, the group. (12:09) We can even pin that, I think. (12:11) Maybe it might be a way to pin it. (12:12) Well, I will. (12:13) I'll pin it to the top of our Facebook page. (12:14) Oh, I can do it right now. (12:15) Oh, you can do that. (12:16) There you go. (12:17) Pin the feature. (12:18) There you go. (12:18) So yes. (12:19) Done. (12:20) Out. (12:21) Pinned. (12:24) Pinned. (12:25) So that was fun. (12:27) Is it over? (12:29) The Pro Audio Suite. My current gear costs around $5000, but I didn't upgrade for several years when I started out.”Check out the free workshop, Using Podcasting to Grow Your Business.Resources:Want to launch your podcast?Check out our free podcasting workshop for therapists (and therapists turned coaches and consultants)https://sellingthecouch.com/podcastingworshopWant to launch your online course? Please check out our free 7-Day Course Creator Starter Kit For Therapists: https://sellingthecouch.com/coursekitMentioned in this episode:Thrizer Thrizer can help private pay therapists transform out-of-network therapy into an in-network experience to help you attract and retain private pay clients! John Kuder, with his extensive experience hosting his own podcast, emphasizes the importance of a high-quality audio experience, recommending the use of XLR microphones and conducting tech checks ahead of time to ensure sound quality. He also suggests creating a guest release form to establish clear requirements for guests. Connie Kudder, a passionate advocate for visual content, shares a similar perspective, emphasizing the importance of guests having their own microphone or headphones with a microphone. She also stresses the importance of making it easy for guests to show up and understand the value of the podcast. (00:00:19) "We've been together now for eons." - Connie Kudder (00:11:15) "But to invite somebody onto our podcast as a guest and talk about what's great about their family business, what they love about their family relationships in the business is what they want to talk about. It's what we want to help them get to more of." - John Kuder (00:19:14) "The only reason that these are great is the Mac. For instance, if you have more than two mics, you've got to make an aggregated device and make it an aggregated device with two USB mics. That's what killed our show in the beginning, like, made it horrible. Because over time, if you don't put the mics a certain way and set the patterns a certain way, they'll catch each other." - Jr Sparrow (00:20:38) "That's one thing that got me about AI. I was like, you're able to create all this stuff. We need something to distraction edit for us." - Jr Sparrow (00:27:47) "If someone is pursuing podcasts to be on them, they should have a microphone." - Jr Sparrow (00:37:20) "Sometimes when you invest in yourself, that was a mistake. I didn't do. I didn't invest in myself early. I had really, really cheap equipment. I got my USB mics. I went to one of these bargain bin places. We bought four USB mics and we'll carry them around, hook them into that. With the long thing like that and four USB mics, everybody would be talking. They would get caught in different mics and all." - Jr Sparrow (00:41:13) "We talk back and forth about that on our YouTube channel." - John Kuder John Kuder, a prominent figure associated with Kuder Consulting Group, is a seasoned expert in the realm of podcasting.
