There are some people who are part of the fabric of the NosillaCast, piping up from time to time over many years to provide valuable insight to the show when a topic tickles them. One of these people is Andy Dolph, who's been sending in content and chatting with me in the background since 2012. You may remember a few years back when Bart had a curious failure with his microphone, and Andy gave us a tutorial on how XLR cables are constructed that explained the failure. After all these years, we finally decided to sit down and have a chit chat about his work as Special Events Coordinator for Learning Space Technologies at the University of New Hampshire. Today is C1E100 for Theme Thursday, Dec 11th, 2025. Today is our final non-retrospective episode of Channel 1. We made it to 100! She was a lovely person, and through these accounts, it's not entirely too late to [at least sorta kinda] get to know her! She was my mom's sister's daughter - and if I'm being completely honest, she reminded me more of mom than of aunt Karen. I suppose, in a way, she was the closest thing my brother and I had to a sister. 2) Links to C1E1 and C2E20! I'll upload each this month as reruns. But meanwhile, here is the easiest way to hear them! a) Link to C1E1: https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/c1e1-press-start b) Link to C2E20: https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/ch-2-nerd-noise-game-club-c2e20-all-good-things Produced using a nearly equal mix of Audacity and Ardour in Fedora Workstation Linux on an ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2023) laptop with perhaps a little support from a Dell Latitude 7480 (running Fedora COSMIC Linux), a 2017-spec DIY gaming PC (running Bazzite Linux) or the Steam Deck (running Steam OS Linux). Recorded with a Shure SM7B XLR dynamic microphone on a RØDE PSA1+ boom arm through a Cloudlifter and a Focusrite 4i4 XLR-to-USB interface! The "Episode Proper" portion was recorded using Audacity in Fedora Workstation like the others, but was recorded using an M-Audio MobilePre XLR-to-USB audio interface and an AudioTechnica AT2020 microphone deliberately used improperly in order to emulate my much much poorer production techniques as of 2016. An AT2020 actually failed during this recording. Fortunately, I had a second AT2020, so I was able to finish the recording without substantial variation. The first line recorded with the second AT2020 was "I'm John Wedgeworth – thanks for listening." In this episode I return to my Podcast Answer Man roots and share an in-depth review of my newest and most unexpected favorite piece of podcast gear. The Zoom PodTrak P4next! This tiny device delivers almost everything I rely on from the Rodecaster Pro 2 at a fraction of the size and a fraction of the cost, coming in at only $179. I'll walk you through how I discovered it, my initial skepticism, and why seeing the Zoom name made me give it a chance. I'm so glad I did. I'll share what the Zoom PodTrak P4next does, how I'm using it, why it has already earned a permanent place in my travel setup, and why I might even replace my Rodecaster Pro 2 in the studio. I recorded this episode from the front seat of my car to demonstrate how powerful this device is for portable recording. You'll hear the quality of the preamps and the impressive noise reduction capabilities in action. I talk about the power options, multitrack capability, four XLR inputs, mix-minus support, sound pads, four independently controlled headphone outputs, built in audio recorder and more. I also share the story of why this little recorder solves technical problems I have carried for years. If you have been looking for a reliable way to record multiple microphones on the road, or if you want to build a complete podcast studio that fits in a backpack, this episode will show you how simple, and inexpensive, it can be. Portable Gear Recommendations Many listeners and viewers ask for my current recommendations for a complete portable recording setup. Here's the list with affiliate links. Primary Device Zoom PodTrak P4next - https://amzn.to/4rA85fY Microphone Options Heil PR-40 - https://amzn.to/4iofavZ If you want something more portable, my long-time favorite was the Audio Technica ATR-2100. It is no longer manufactured, so my best current guess for a quality budget dynamic mic is the Rode PodMic Cardioid Dynamic Broadcast Microphone found at https://amzn.to/4rgUIBf Cables Three foot XLR mic cables - https://amzn.to/43UbqMC Stands Portable mic stand options - https://amzn.to/3MmDMJf Headphones Sony MDR-7506 - https://amzn.to/3M0apwo Replacement ear pads for the MDR-7506 - https://amzn.to/3M0gj0z Closing Thought If this episode inspires you to pick up the Zoom PodTrak P4next, I would love to hear about it. Bad audio is one of the fastest ways to lose an audience, no matter how great your content is. But sounding better doesn't have to mean buying piles of gear or learning how to mix audio like a pro. This week, I'm joined by Laura Clapp Davidson, musician, content creator, and market development manager at Shure, who knows exactly how to make creators sound their best.Laura explains how to simplify your setup, fix common mistakes, and pick the right mic for your space and budget. We talk about everything from the basics of guest audio prep to the myths around shotgun mics, boom arms, and USB vs. XLR setups. Laura also shares her approach to starting a podcast, managing sound on the go, and what she's most excited about in the future of creator audio. If you've been putting off upgrading your setup, this episode might just convince you it's time.Key TakeawaysYour mic doesn't need to break the bank: Great sound is about positioning and setup, not price tags.Headphones matter: Always use wired headphones to avoid echo and delay (sorry, AirPods fans).Mic placement beats editing: Get close to the mic; fixing bad audio later only goes so far.Prep your guests: A quick checklist for mics, headphones, and background noise saves hours of editing later.Invest in you: Good audio is a long-term asset. Buy gear that will last, not one you'll replace next year.ResourcesLaura Clapp Davidson: lauraclapp.comPodcast: Song 43 and TMI (The Music Industry) — tmiwithlaura.comShure Microphones: shure.com----------------------Ecamm - Your go-to solution for crafting outstanding live shows and podcasts. - Get 15% off your first payment with promo code JEFF15SocialMediaNewsLive.com - Dive into our website for comprehensive episode breakdowns.Youtube.com - Tune in live, chat with us directly, and be part of the conversation. Summary of "Fork in Your Ear" Podcast Episode (Tim & Nate) This casual, banter-heavy episode kicks off with the hosts (Tim and Nate) fumbling through a sound check amid slurping coffee, barking dogs, and tech glitches—classic podcaster chaos. They joke about cluttered lives, puppy invasions, and Nate's XLR setup before rolling into the main show with self-deprecating humor about aging, coffee mishaps, and existential dread ("Why are we alive?"). Life Updates Tim's Whirlwind: Tim's dealing with home repairs (new dishwasher installed by a former Michelin-star chef from NYC who's now a handyman post-COVID; garage door fixed with smart integrations but noisy app beeps; doorknob drama leading to wild life stories). His leg's seizing from scar tissue (PT starts soon), mom's estate sale cleared out the house but didn't cover septic costs—still a win for decluttering. Financially, things improved: instant check processing, Apple Card approval (finally, after years of denials), and a surprise Xbox delivery after billing nightmares. He rants about Microsoft's chatbot hell for support. Nate's Rollercoaster: Work's feast-or-famine; a past-due job means Sunday overtime (paid double for minimal hours—great for him, bad for the business). Employee health crises abound: a coworker out post-heart attack/stroke, another starting chemo for throat cancer, and a recent funeral. Family hits hard too—stepmom's husband passed, niece prepping for birth amid her first wave of funerals ("Buckle up, buttercup"). Positives: Inheritance windfall pays off a car (no more payments, despite tire-popping wife jokes), and splurging on a kid-proof PC setup (i5, RTX 3050, durable mechanical keyboard/mouse) to spare their main rigs. Shared Vibes: Aging woes (Nate's "pentagenarian" shoulder pain; Tim's body betrayals), random revelations (Tim's massage therapist's quick divorce), and bio breaks mid-episode. Video Games Tim's Light Play: Minimal gaming due to life chaos—snippets of Helltank 2 on new Xbox Series X Galaxy Edition (smoother than Series S; no cross-play griefing despite PS fears; chat lags initially). Excited for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (Dec. 4 release; open-world vibes with space motorbike teased in janky trailer—fans divided). Rants: Nintendo's absurd NPC-summoning patent (pre-dates Pokémon); Acclaim's surprise revival with indies like Dead Space Cells knockoff; UE5 scalability for Switch 2 (Star Wars Outlaws shines despite hardware hate); Xbox price hikes ($799 for Galaxy—Tim snagged pre-raise); No Man's Sky Switch 2 Corvette update (multiplayer still OG Switch-less); all RE games native on Switch 2; Perfect Dark cancellation drama (near Take-Two publishing deal fell through). Nate's Dives: Hollow Knight: Silksong (beautiful Metroidvania, but zero onboarding—jumped in blind); Sword of the Sea (watery sandy area progression); Destiny 2 (season-behind fixes make it smooth; hyped for Renegades). Correction: His GameSir controller model's a lighter version (no hall-effect triggers/rumble). Nintendo Direct Highlights: Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 combo (up-res'd for Switch 2; $45 Amiibos rage); Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel subtitled Galaxy (Rosalina focus? Scarlett Johansson headcanon); FF7 Remake & Sonic Trilogy ports; Fire Emblem tease. Sony drama: Ghost of Yōtei designer fired over Charlie Kirk comments (lame PR response). Tech Headsets & Peripherals: Tim's new HyperX Cloud Alpha (fixed PS echo issues; spatial audio blew friend's mind—stereo 101 roast). Nate's Arctis Nova (won in raffle; mix amp for chat/game). Apple Event Rundown: iPhone lineup confirmed (Air: ultra-thin titanium, single cam, cut-down Pro chip; 17 Pros: aluminum return, "Plateau" camera bar for antennas, vapor chamber cooling, 30% sustained perf boost). Modems: C1/C1X in-house (Air/SE); Wi-Fi/Bluetooth N1 chip (efficiency gains). Watches: Hypertension detection, sat-phone Ultra, better battery. OS unifications: Watch/iPad meh (laggy fonts); Apple TV smooth but tiny text; iOS front cam upgrade (square sensor for tracking/selfies). Meta Fail: Ray-Ban Meta AI demo glitches mid-cooking demo ("Meta, what do I do?" meme gold). PC Woes: Tim's shipped rig (Descent setup) dead on arrival—video ports fried; Nate suspects reseat. Entertainment RIP Robert Redford (87; natural causes at home—bummer for Endgame fans). Books/Media: Tim binged Red Rising trilogy (piercing sci-fi; full-cast audiobook for book 4); fan-made Tron: Ares supercut trailer slaps. NIN's Tron: Ares score: Atmospheric/Fragile-era vibes (repetitive riffs, subdued electronics; Infiltrator as core theme; Building Better Worlds evokes Wendy Carlos). Harry Potter full-cast audiobooks incoming (star-studded: McAvoy, Pegg, etc.—overdue money grab?). TV Gripes: Mr. & Mrs. Smith S2 delayed indefinitely (cliffhanger rage); Nate finished Strange New Worlds (Tim slacking on Trek). Episode wraps on unifications' mixed bag, with laughs over beeps, updates, and "pentagenarian" jabs. Runtime ~2.5 hours of raw, unfiltered bro-chat—perfect for fans of tech rants and life entropy. 1214. Today's "F-isode" is the soundtrack to the upcoming indie game "MAKRANA" designed, developed, and scored by Matt Miller of Des Moines-based Chronarian Games. Matt sits in with St. John at Nerd Noise Studios for a Channel 2-style in-person conversation to discuss the soundtrack and various other matters of varying degrees of relevance. ;-) All tracks from the game MAKRANA, an upcoming game by Chronarian Games for PS5, XBSX and probably other platforms as well. All tracks composed, arranged, and performed by Matt Miller. Tracklist A1) "Production Disclaimer" Earcatcher (St. John on the now NNR-customary $400 Shure SM7B Mic) - 00:00:00 A2) "Episode Opener" Earcatcher (St. John on the now long-deprecated $100 AudioTechnica AT2020 Mic which was the mic St. John used on NNR from 2017-2022) - 00:00:59 01) "ZENITH" (game and track titles all capitalized for stylistic purposes by developer) a) Music - 00:01:12 b) Discussion and Top-of-Show Business (St. John and Matt sharing a single AT2020) - 00:04:50 02) "OBSERVE" a) Music - 00:29:39 b) Discussion (all voice recordings from here on out using that same single AT2020) - 00:33:27 03) "REFLECT" a) Music - 00:47:59 b) Discussion (our shortest conversation of the episode by far!) - 00:51:47 04) "QUADRANT" a) Music - 00:59:04 b) Discussion - 01:03:21 05) "DEVIATE" a) Music - 01:28:28 b) Discussion and End-of-Show Business - 01:33:51 B1) Outtakes - 02:04:08 Total Episode Runtime: 02:10:02 Matt and Chronarian Games can be found at www.chronariangames.com as well as on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, BlueSky, Mastodon, YouTube, and X. Special Thanks to Erin Miller, Nora Miller, and Jodee Wedgeworth (aka "St. Jodee") for making this recording session / episode possible. Produced in a mix of Audacity and Ardour in Fedora Linux on a 2023-model Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop (docked in a "desktop" context) using the aforementioned mics, a Focusrite 4i4 XLR-to-USB audio interface, and in the case of the SM7B, a Cloudlifter in-line signal booster. No alcohol was involved in this recording - however, I do think sleep deprivation may have been a factor! ;-) :-D Enjoy!!
Louie shares how to set up your first recording for your podcast. He gives a step by step guide on what you need to do and how to get a great podcast recording, whether that's a solo episode or you are interviewing. Want to get into podcasting but need a little push? Join our 3-day Podcasting event in Peterborough! – Get in touch for details! podcast@disruptivemedia.co.uk Episode Takeaways • Suggested Equipment You Will Need: Samsung Q2U microphone, a recorder like the Zoom PodTrak P4, Batteries, SD Card, 4GB SanDisk, XLR cable if using multiple microphones, Microphone stand and Headphones. For more detail on equipment head to episode ‘PODCAST EQUIPMENT 101: WHAT YOU NEED & WHY' • Think about the positioning of your microphone as this is key to the quality of your sound. • Always wear your headphones at all times, unless you have someone listening to the recording for you. • The ‘gain' of the microphone is essentially its sensitivity; the higher the dial, the more sensitive it is. Check that it is at a comfortable level by listening through your headphones. • It is better to be too quiet than too loud, as if you are too loud, you will distort your recording and it cannot be saved in post-production. BEST MOMENTS “You're going to listen to it, so make sure it sounds good to you” “Listen to the recording and change dials appropriately to make sure we are coming through clearly” “We're trying to avoid peaking or being too loud in the microphone” “If this is your first time plugging everything in, do expect some changes and tech faults” VALUABLE RESOURCES PODCAST EQUIPMENT 101: WHAT YOU NEED & WHY: https://traffic.megaphone.fm/USVL7437414704.mp3?updated=1753924125 Website Want to get into podcasting but need a little push? Auch ich begann mit einem USB-Mikrofon meine ersten Podcast- und Musikaufnahmen, bevor ich auf XLR gewechselt bin. Was spricht für ein USB-Mikrofon, was eher für die XLR-Variante? Verwendete Mikrofone: Rode NT-USB Mini, Beyerdynamic M201TG, SE8, AKG P170.

In this episode, Louie tells you everything you need to know about equipment when recording your podcast. He shares what he would personally recommend to just get started, what provides value for money and what things you absolutely do not need for a beginner to intermediate set up. There are no affiliations here; this is just what we would recommend after working with hundreds of clients across many different types and styles of podcasts! Want to get into podcasting but need a little push? Join our 3-day Podcasting event in Peterborough! – Get in touch for details! podcast@disruptivemedia.co.uk Episode Takeaways • Samsung Q2U microphone. This sometimes will come in a kit. This microphone is very good value for money and can be used in any podcasting set up. • Zoom H4n and the Zoom PodTrak P4 are both good options for a recorder, but consider what input you need before deciding. • There are a lot of other things to consider with a recorder. Keep a close eye on the podcast for an episode Louie is recording on exactly this! • Batteries are important for recording; you will need more than you expect. • SD card options are almost endless, but Louie recommends a relatively high speed and large option, such as the 4GB SanDisk. • If you have multiple people speaking then you need multiple microphones. You will need an XLR cable to be able to plug them all in, you need one XLR cable per microphone. Consider the length of cable you might need. • Microphone stands will vary depending on your type of set up. Its main purpose is to get the microphone away from any surfaces that might vibrate or create unwanted feedback and noise. • Headphones are forward, you can use almost anything you have already, it's about monitoring the recording, so anyone who is being recorded needs to be wearing headphones. BEST MOMENTS “Think about what kind of podcast you are making.” “The worst thing that could happen is you guys run out of battery mid interview and don't realise it and don't have back up” “If you've got something that works, get it out, plug it in, see if it sounds ok. You don't have to go away and spend loads of money if you don't need to, use something if you've got it” VALUABLE RESOURCES Microphone: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samson-SAQ2U-Microphone-Recording-Pack/dp/B001R747SG?th=1 Recorder: https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/200806360890025--zoom-podtrak-p4?gad_source=4&gad_campaignid=17601953470&gbraid=0AAAAAD76p-1ub2Ja6py32W1LsdqRLx5bn&gclid=CjwKCAjwv5zEBhBwEiwAOg2YKNRDfzEkrcAWQ7Sw8ARzMOFBF1rtT_FSr9j77LnVeYfe1iUNC1KlKBoCnFIQAvD_BwE SD Card: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-MicroSDHC-Card-Label-Change/dp/B001C0DJL4 Website Want to get into podcasting but need a little push? [2025 Addendum] Our third and final rerun which we're releasing for July, and third and final rerun celebrating the memory of Masters of VGM (“MoVGM”), and our third and final of my bids to drum up excitement for the “VGM Hall of Fame” (“HoF”) series spearheaded by Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself (as well as any other shows which have elected to join us in the time since my drafting this on July 2nd), we look, at last, to MoVGM's final year: 2024. The Theme of 2024's MoVGM was a focus on female and LGBTQIA+ (particularly trans) composers. And Nerd Noise Radio's contribution for this year was a Channel 1 featuring the soundtrack to the game Celeste, composed by the fabulous trans composer Lena Raine. The pride connection goes even deeper, though, as the game was written and designed by Maddie Thorson, who is also trans, and upon whom the [also also trans] protagonist, Madelaine is also based. From a production standpoint, this is going to be pretty close to on par with a 2025 production as it is using all the same recording hardware, and most of the same production techniques, but may not quite match the current crop due to my using less sophisticated monitoring headphones resulting in a final mix which might be a tad on the “hot” side. Either way, it's a showcase of great people making great music to a great game with a great message. So, we are quite pleased to present C1E86: “The Celeste Soundtrack” (originally released 06/15/2024). Enjoy ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is C1E86 for Soundtrack Saturday, June 15th, 2024. In Podcast Playbook (Part 2), Kelly Kennedy rips the fluff off podcast tech and gives you the real, unfiltered truth about the gear that actually matters. If you're serious about launching a podcast that sounds world-class, this episode is your blueprint. From computers and microphones to audio interfaces and headphones, Kelly breaks down what to buy, why it matters, and how to build a pro-level setup without wasting a dollar. No gimmicks. No jargon. Just clarity and confidence to build your studio the right way—whether you're in a spare bedroom or a full production space. But this isn't just about gear—it's about showing up like a pro from day one. Kelly explains why audio quality is make-or-break, why your computer is the real unsung hero, and how the right setup positions you for long-term podcast success. This episode will cut months off your learning curve and set you up to hit record with power and purpose. If you want to build a podcast that's built to last, Episode 251 is non-negotiable.Key Takeaways: 1. Your computer is the most critical piece of podcasting equipment—editing and production demand serious processing power.2. A gaming laptop or desktop is often the best choice due to its high-end GPU, CPU, RAM, and SSD performance.3. Sound quality can make or break your show; even great content won't save you if the audio hurts people's ears.4. USB microphones are great for beginners, but XLR microphones paired with an interface deliver far superior sound and control.5. A quality audio interface like the Rodecaster Pro 2 allows for zero-latency monitoring, clean gain control, and pro-level audio routing.6. Headphones are non-negotiable—they prevent feedback, help monitor sound live, and allow you to edit with precision.7. Bluetooth headphones introduce latency—always go wired when producing or editing your show.8. You don't need a full studio to sound professional—a home setup with the right gear can match broadcast quality.9. Start with a setup you can grow into—XLR systems are scalable and used by nearly all professional podcasters.10. Equipment helps—but consistency, connection, and your message are what truly build a great podcast.Ready to build something that lasts? The Catalyst Club isn't just another business community—it's your backstage pass to real growth. Today's broadcast is C1E96 for Theme Thursday, June 26th, 2025 (happy 27th "dating" anniversary to my dear wife, St. Jodee). Today's theme is a collection of music from games in my own personal Steam Library – planned, curated, produced, and distributed entirely on/from the Steam Deck (SteamOS desktop mode)! A collection dominated by music from indie games from the 2010's and 2020's and peppered with music from bigger-named games from the 1990's and 2000's and contains not one, but TWO chill zones, which collectively account for almost half of the mixtape runtime! Special thanks to Professor Tom from Shujin Acadamy VGM Club podcast for helping me settle on episode title. Other candidate titles I'd been considering included "Gimme Steam" (which was the working title), "Steam Punk", and "All Hands on Deck". Lastly, this is our debut episode on Terra Player! Today's broadcast is C1E95 for VibeOff Vrijdag, May 9th, 2025. Today's broadcast will be a one-time-only special twist on a FaceOff Friday, where, instead of comparing different versions of the same track against each other, we're comparing pairs (and occasionally trios) of different songs against each other which either have similar movements, or melodies, or instrumentation, or simply just vibes and asking you, the listener to not only tell us which one you like better, but whether or not the comparisons are even valid, and how strongly or weakly if so. So, in lieu of an 8th and final FaceOff Friday episode, Nerd Noise Radio is pleased to present: VibeOff Vrijdag (Vrijdag = the Dutch word for Friday). This week's episode of The Pro Audio Suite dives headfirst into the world of budget audio gear, exploring whether cheaper equipment has actually improved or if it's still just average kit with fancy marketing. Here are some key highlights and insights from the discussion: Budget Gear: Better or Still Rubbish? Robustness & Quality: The crew revisits the Rode NT1's evolution—from early plastic models to today's sturdy iterations. They ponder its surprising collectability today. User-Friendliness: A cheeky chat unfolds about how budget gear manufacturers should assume nothing when it comes to user knowledge, advocating for painfully obvious product instructions, especially with mics like Rode's NT1. Headphones: Still the Achilles Heel? Consensus emerges around headphones as one area where low-budget options haven't improved as dramatically as microphones. The crew reckons that decent studio cans rarely dip below the $100 mark without significant compromises in sound and build quality. Austrian Audio gets a shout-out for their entry-level headphones offering decent quality, but it's noted that paying a little more generally delivers much better audio. Interfaces and Converters: Robbo's downsized rig is highlighted, having moved from larger interfaces to compact solutions like the SSL2 and the Centrance PASport VO. An important insight shared is that cheap interfaces often share internal converter chips with much pricier gear, meaning the sonic differences can be surprisingly subtle. Bargain Finds and Bargain Fails: Andrew points out the rise in cost of entry-level interfaces from brands like Focusrite, thanks to feature-creep. The group chats about bargain-basement gear flooding Amazon, discussing surprising finds like a $30 dual XLR-to-USB-C interface cable. Robbo humorously advises caution, noting that certain inexpensive gear—particularly cables and mic arms—can still be absolute rubbish. Chinese Clones and Cheap Accessories: George brings up affordable Chinese-made hardware like camera mounts and mic arms, now significantly cheaper yet surprisingly robust compared to premium brands. The "magic arm" clamp is a notable budget win. However, the consensus firmly recommends against skimping on headphones and cables. Quality connectors from Neutrik and Mogami cables are touted as essentials worth investing in. Plug-ins: Stock vs. Premium vs. AI Debate surrounds stock plug-ins vs premium offerings, questioning the necessity of higher-priced plug-ins from brands like FabFilter. Healthy skepticism about AI-enhanced plug-ins and noise reduction is expressed, particularly regarding Adobe Podcast's AI noise reduction. Emulators & Mic Modeling: Opinions split on whether mic emulation is beneficial or just a feel-good factor. Townsend Sphere and Antelope Audio's mics spark a conversation about whether emulated models truly rival their inspirations. Final Thoughts: Cheaper gear today often does punch above its price tag compared to the past, especially microphones. But there remain clear lines where quality is non-negotiable (headphones, connectors, and build quality in general). Ultimately, the episode reinforces the idea that good engineering practice and knowledge still win the day, regardless of budget constraints. It's another lively, opinionated, and informative chat from Robbo, Andrew Peters, George "The Tech" Whittam, and Robert Marshall, brought to you by their sponsors Tribooth and Austrian Audio. If you're keen to catch the full flavour and all the banter, check out the episode at theproaudiosuite.com. A big shout out to our sponsors, Austrian Audio and Tri Booth. This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. In here: 1- Carrying weight more safely - When picking up weight in front of your body, embrace the core (tighten the abdomen); - it gives you more stability, so you are more capable to do the task. 2- Microphone types a) by connection i) USB: connects directly to the computer, in the universal serial bus port. Plug and use! ii) XLR: needs a USB audio interface , with XLR input, to connect to the computer. There are more options of microphones and, if you can spend on an interface, quality is generally better. XLR connectors: female (left) and male. ( Image by Michael Piotrowski / Wikimedia Commons – CC BY-SA 3.0 .) b) by diaphragm i) condenser: captures the voice in more detail, with deeper bass, more detailed treble… Most of the USB microphones uses this technology. As a disadvantage, they catch even minimal sound details of the environment, vibrating with little sound waves around, even distant. That's why you might get as recording result the clear details of noise from the street, or reverberation (echo) of an untreated room if you use it without the best environment. (If it's ok for you even in these situations, it's a merit of other factors, not a merit of the condenser diaphragm) . Usage : A favorite of singers in studio, among several other applications. As you can see on videos of professionals singing, one don't talk on top of it (which might produce a low and undesired muffled sound) but on the side — and on the correct side, because most models of microphones have a cardioid pollar pattern. A side-adress microphone (captures the sound from one specific side), condenser-type. (Image by Arthur Fox / https://mynewmicrophone.com/diaphragm.) ii) dynamic: responds to the audio source (voice, instrument) very close to the diaphragm, do not capture sound more than some centimeters (or some inches) away. It's the best for amateur use, or in a room without acoustic treatment. Usage : Musicians performing live use dynamic microphones so the instruments (and crowd) around don't get their sound amplified by this artist's microphone. Radios prefer dynamic mics, because it goes to a more impactful voice, rejects eventual sounds from noisy mixers or keyboards nearby that the radio host might be operating. A top-adress microphone (captures the sound from the top), dynamic-type. (Image by Arthur Fox / https://mynewmicrophone.com/diaphragm.) The RE20 from Electro-Voice (not the photo above) is a favorite of radio stations, in part for being dynamic, in part for reducing the proximity effect (that is, the sound “exploding” when the source gets too near to the capsule) because of its technology, named Variable-D. A word about captation pattern (no, the name is polar pattern): it says about the directional response. For example, some are omnidirectional (captures sound equally from all the sides); most of them are cardioid, capturing the sound coming from the front (the speaker, the instrument directed to it), but rejects sound from the rear. 3- Microsoft Word (or Libreoffice Writer) “templates” - So, you do use templates for text archives, to facilitate the doing of commonly used documents. To know what to change, you highlight in yellow, right? Or do you put the text in red? - Well, my recommendation is to use, instead, * or {} : asterisk, curly brackets or any other symbol that you can type easily and not use as text in any document. . So you can easily find what is the part you have to change or write, and only delete the * when you do that part. At the end, you can check if there is any * remaining, if not, the document is ready. - So, isnt' it the same with colors, to indicate what to change in the document? . No. For formatting you need to use your vision (and may lose something) and have to remove the formatting manually. It's possible to use the Find tool, but not as easily as finding a character. To illustrate: print of an official document template for the bidding process for information and communication technology services. (Author: Brazil, Advocacia-Geral da União. Modelos da Lei 14.133/21 para bens e serviços de TIC. Link: https://www.gov.br/agu/pt-br/composicao/cgu/cgu/modelos/licitacoesecontratos/14133/bens-e-servicos-de-tic). Changes to be made were marked in red and italics, but brackets [] and “XXXX” were used also. - Ah: . there are forms, real templates you can use, but, hey, if you're part of the 90% that saves “templates” in the common format (.docx, .odt) and does not use the very special tools for the template kind of document, knowing and using some tips like this is ok and is satisfying. - Not on templates, but in editing, I have worked on the revision of books using this, to know where to come back later to check, or where I have stopped on some day, with good result. Extra: give a look on the comment options, they are easy to use and practical, see if you adapt with it for your necessities. 4- A recooording tip - Always record at least 3 seconds, totally quiet, before starting the show (that is, before talking). This “silence” is the room tone, which you may use: . as adequate silence in the editing proccess (in place of a cut part), or . you may take it for noise reduction profile IF needed, or . which you can only delete in the end if you don't find what to do with it. - Recording knowledge number 2 and final: save an uncompressed version of the raw of your recording, and keep it intact. Work on copies, keep the original saved as .wav (or, if prefered, .flac). 5- Permissions for apps Be careful with free apps. Don't install any and everything. See their permissions. - Ads? Why more things being offered to you, trying to give insatisfaction? If there is an option without ads, you may prefer. . Also, the ad system of some apps uses more battery (downloading different ads, sending more information of you to personalize ads, using the notification system, meaning running in the background). - In-app purchases: with it, you'll get angry with an app, because it's not free to do what you thought it would do when you installed. And it may use recurring payments, pay for each feature, and worst, you don't know beforehand. If it's to pay, prefer the ones you buy (once) in the download and has no in-app purchases. - With apps in that you input your data (like e2ee, or “e2ee” communicating, or browsers): see permissions, what data they keep and share, or at least choose open source and well-renowed developers. - Please don't download any app that promises performance enhancement. The system (Android or iOS) is already optimized for what it is, third party apps can do little or, most commonly, nothing, and is more space and features loading your system. . Want speed? Delete the apps that are not absolutely necessary (I'm talking to you, solitaire game with access to internet and that notifies you to play from time to time), or disable notifications of every app and put them to deep sleep (so they don't run in background, only when you open them). - So much said, let's take it in one sentence: install only what needed, and see permissions and ads before choosing. 6- Mobile phone battery - You use your phone all day and still have more than 20% of battery? Or recharges 2 times a day? (or 3!) - If it's the last option, and your phone is less than 3 years old and you never use uncertified chargers, you can try to have a worry-free all-day phone usage doing what said before: disabling apps that run in the background (uninstall, or put to deep sleep). It's a one by one process, but once for all. . If it's this way because of intense use, nothing to do; enjoy your product! ✶ Final word We did not enter on details: no explanations or reasons abounding, no. We didn't even go to number 7 , which would be perfection ; because I have not a seventh good idea. Only the bits of what I think I know & that I value as precious. A hug! bye! In this episode, I use the Tascam Portastudio 424 MKII to create a cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" using a combination of the Digitakt, Critter and Guitari Bolsa Bass, Juno 60 synthesizer, and a Rhodes Stage Mark I 73-Key Electric Piano. The Tascam 424 MKII is a classic four-track cassette recorder that became a staple in home recording during the '90s. Known for its rugged design and user-friendly interface, it features expanded I/O options, including XLR mic inputs, a sweepable 3-band EQ, and advanced transport functions like auto-punch, loop rehearsal, and an electronic counter. Its lo-fi charm makes it an excellent machine for recording analog cassette-based music. You can support my channel here: https://buymeacoffee.com/nostalgicexplorer Follow me on Instagram: @nostalgicexplorer_

As the end of the year is here again, we're finally doing it: we're ranking every plug and connector in existence, or at least all the ones we can think of. Following up on our last Great Search for a DMX / XLR connector, our next step is to find a DMX transceiver. We started by looking at official and common DMX shields for Arduino since we know there's a ton out there, including the semi-official TinkerKit brand (https://web.archive.org/web/20140727121929/http://www.tinkerkit.com/dmx-master-shield/). These boards all use the MAX485 (https://www.digikey.com/short/q7mbb9bj) and XLR connectors. They often *don't* have isolation or transient voltage protection. While the MAX485 is readily available, let's look at some other options that might work out for our design, especially if they have isolation built in! One of the most common questions I'm asked is about the gear needed to begin podcasting. I will honestly admit that it's a difficult decision when you're just starting because you want reliable equipment that does a great job, but you are also hesitant to break the bank for it. As you progress, several factors complicate the choices of gear, such as how you conduct guest interviews and whether you have a co-host. In today's session, I'm walking you through four common podcasting scenarios and the gear I recommend for each. All of this information is compiled in the Buying Guide found inside our Healthcasters course. You'll Learn:My gear setup as I started the STC podcast in 2015 with a teeny, tiny budgetMy advice for beginning podcasters: “Don't go out and purchase all the gear I mention, but go with the basics as you focus on building and honing your storytelling and interviewing skills.”Four podcasting scenarios and the recommended equipment:1- A single host with solo episodes and guest interviews via the Internet.I recommend the Samsung Q2U dynamic mic, Koolertron mic shock mount, OnStage foam windscreen, pop filter, mic stand, and Rode PSA mic arm.2- A single host who interviews guests in person. In addition to the basic equipment in Scenario #1, I recommend a 2-3 camera set-up (very expensive!), Calendly to coordinate interviews, 2 tabletop stands/mic arms, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for recording, and XLR cables.3- Co-hosts who connect and interview guests via the Internet.I recommend the basic equipment in Scenario #1 for EACH co-host, along with a recording platform, like Zoom or Ecamm Live.4- Co-hosts who get together in-person to interview guests in person. This is a dream set-up, but it is very expensive and complicated. I recommend the basic equipment in Scenario #1 for EACH co-host and guest (Yes, that is at least three of everything!), along with the Rodecaster Pro (the Rodecaster Pro II or Pro Mini), 32 GB SD card, and XLR cables. My advice: “Start with a lean setup. My current gear costs around $5000, but I didn't upgrade for several years when I started out.”Check out the free workshop, Using Podcasting to Grow Your Business.Resources:Want to launch your podcast?Check out our free podcasting workshop for therapists (and therapists turned coaches and consultants)https://sellingthecouch.com/podcastingworshopWant to launch your online course? Please check out our free 7-Day Course Creator Starter Kit For Therapists: https://sellingthecouch.com/coursekitMentioned in this episode:Check Out PsycCareers! If you're a psychology professional who is ready to take the next step in their career, check out PsycCareers, the American Psychological Association Services, Inc's career center.
