In case you didn't know, my all-time favorite gif is the one featuring Marie Kondo gleefully stating that she loves mess. Well, Ms. Kondo, you'd love Barbarian's Taming, because our girl Maddie and her man, Hassen, are MESSY. Ana Coqui, of the Beyond the Sectors and RomBkLove podcasts, joins me as we discuss their questionable decisions. Not only does Maddie pick the tribe's loneliest, most desperate man to have a no-strings-attached fling with (lol good luck enforcing that), she picks the dude who is exiled for stealing her own sister. Somehow, though, these two outsiders make it work. But, will Maddie's sister ever accept them? Will Hassen be able to convince Vektal to put an end to his (admittedly mild) exile? Turns out, none of that matters because a catastrophic earthquake destroys to Tribal Caves and puts the whole community out on the ice streets. It's a plot-heavy read with some big consequences for the tribe. Listen in next week as I discuss Barbarian's Heart, featuring poor Pashov and his poor busted head, with Erin of Heaving Bosoms. This is a repost of episode two of the Ice Planet Podcast covering Barbarian's Taming. Originally published on March 3, 2020.

I can't believe I made it through this entire episode without making a single! Miss Cleo joke. This episode, Melinda, from Romance Sparks Joy, joins me to read about the Ice Planet's resident psychic and his alien girlfriend, Lila. Lila gives us some of the series best character development, as she grows a timid damsel-in-distress to a daring outdoors-woman. This books gives us a lot of series firsts, as well. We got the first mention of the fruit caves, the first hint that those creepy metlaks aren't as feral as they seem and, finally!, the series' first failed kidnapping. Hassen, buddy. Sucks for you. Hear more about his sad punishment when I discuss Barbarian's Taming with Ana from the RomBkLove podcast and a reviewer for Love in Panels. This is a repost of episode seven of the Ice Planet Podcast covering Barbarian's Touch. Originally published on Feb. 25, 2020.

This week, it’s one of Sarah’s favorites, and by an author Jen has never read! Lorraine Heath is a master of the historical, and this one is near-perfect. It’s complex and nuanced and it has an infidelity plot and THERE IS SO MUCH ANGST!We love having you with us! — subscribe on your favorite podcasting platform and like/review the podcast if you’re so inclined! In two weeks, we’re reading the Queen of Dirty Talk! Sarah and Jen both love Tessa Bailey — so we’ll be talking about our two favorites of her books, Asking for Trouble (Sarah’s) and Protecting What’s His (Jen’s). Find them at: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, or Kobo.Show Notes- Turns out Sarah and Jen aren't the only people who think these Apple keyboards are trash--after winning a 2020 Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, Taika Waititi had quite a bit to say on the subject.- Tom Beer is one of Jen's editors at Kirkus, and you should follow him on Twitter.- You can read The Smith College Sophian on line, and we'll link to the interview with Sarah onces it goes live.- We have Leslie Knope from Parks & Recreation to thank for the glory that is Galentine's Day. Read Jen's column about some books that celebrate women's friendship.- A few years ago during #RomBkLove, Shantastic/@bardsong wrote a great piece about disability in romance. You can also check out the blog, Sense and Disability by @Callalily.- Kate Reading is an amazing audiobook narrator, she's the one who narrates Lord of Scoundrels.- Fridging is a word from comics that is when women characters are killed to motivate a male character, but can be used to describe any time a less powerful or privileged character is used as a plot device. Flat Stanley is a character in children's books, but flat characters you might remember from English class.- Harry and Meghan are still taking money from the Duchy of Cornwall.- Jen said she was going to go back and read the other books in the trilogy, and they are bundled together on Amazon for $10.- The Bechdel Test is a pretty simple way of judging how inclusive movies are of women characters; it's limited but powerful. Jen wrote about external and internal conflict in romance, but we also talked about it on the Priest episode -- and we are always unpacking the way conflict works in romance.- Dialogue tags get a bad rap, famously Elmore Leonard claimed that writers should only use "said" and "asked." In this part of the discussion, Sarah mentioned her friend Barry Lyga, a YA author.- Jen thinks these three are codependent.- Cheating is the third rail of romance. It is. There are some lists on Goodreads of romances that have cheating, but it's complicated and difficult. One Jen read recently was I Want You Back by Lorelei James, but the cheating happened in the past. If you're interested in reading another book about someone who discovers the other family, Jen recommends Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones.- Next time, we'll be reading Tessa Bailey, The Queen of Dirty Talk. Sarah's choice is Asking for Trouble, and a secondary text is the first one of that same series, Protecting What's His.- Buy stickers and buttons from Kelly and t-shirts from Jordan.- We are experimenting with some voice to text transcripts, so here's the first one for this episode.

Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in your favorite podcasting platform — and while you’re there, please leave us a like or a review. Our next read (in two weeks) will be Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night — and the witches are coming! WDOAWN is the story of Bowen MacRieve (werewolf) and Mariketa the Awaited (witch)…and the book that really breaks open the wide world of IAD. We’ll be joined by the brilliant Adriana Herrera, and you won’t want to miss it. Get ready for the read along at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books or your local indie.Show Notes- Some fun facts about The Amazing Race.- The Valkyeries in mythology, and maybe you didn't notice that "Val Hall" is a play on Valhalla. - Vampires in pop culture & literature.- Remember your high school English teacher talking about characters who are foils of each other? This is not to be confused with your algebra teacher talking about how to solve quadratic equations.- On Urban Dictionary, I want to kiss the person who defined Frigid it as "An outdated, Victorian term used to describe women who aren't interested in sex. Only used today by drunk men in bars to explain why the woman they attempted to pick up wasn't interested."- A wacky look at some potential real life examples of time travel.- Just out of curiosity, this is what you'll find if you google "Bad Ass Estonian General." IMPRESSIVE.- Sarah's wet noodle joke is part of a long literary tradition where vampires just need a good dose of viagra.- All about beta heros, cinnamon roll heroes, and a link to a lot of talk about the latter from Ana Coqui's November 2018's #RomBkLove. - Sarah mentions "the vampire chained to a bed" and she's talking about Conrad Wroth, the hero of Dark Needs at Night's Edge (book 4).- Just a brief review of birth control, how we use it, and why it is so important to women's rights.- In case you were wondering why Jen talked about "no one ever has to go to the bathroom." It's a thing. Sarah accused Jen of RUINING ROMANCE, but clearly that's not the case because here we are.- More about lightning and planes.- Chicago's Bubbly Creek. That's real. If you ever want to nerd out on this history, Jen recommends a book called Nature's Metropolis. Honestly, you really have no idea how fascinating grain elevators are.- The short and incomplete list of magical items introduced in this book: Kaderin gives the Furies armor that can't be pierced and a battle axe that can kill Lore beings without having to behead them. The New Zealand coven of Valkyeries has a choker that allows the person wearing it to sing a siren's song. No one knows what happend to the armband that makes the wearer feel overwhelming sexual desire. Amphitrite's tear is a bead that will heal any wound. The Blade of Honorius never misses its target. Thrane's Key was the time-traveling prize in this Hie, and at the end of the book, Riora gives Sebastian one to use at his discretion.- Deus Ex Machina is fun to say, but kind of a bummer when that's how an author gets her characters out of a jam.- All the cool vampires from the mid-2000s carry RAZR phones.- Diamonds are a construct, just like virginity.- Sarah is pro-Kardashian.- Bowen & Mariketa are coming up next, but the thing she was excited about at the end of that book actually happened at the end of Dark Needs at Night's Edge.- Swineherds vs. shepherds, and the only time Jen ever felt truly understood on Reddit.- The Battle of Evermore by Led Zeppelin, and if you think Jen wasn't dying to update Genius with this Kresley Cole reference, you don't know her at all. But maybe the video is more your speed.
