A lot of us have experience of open plan designs. Like any design, there are some wonderful examples and some troublesome ones. In recent months, open plan schools, otherwise known as innovative learning environments, have been pulled into the debate.       In this week's episode, we speak with Mary Featherston, a celebrated Australian designer whose recent work specialises in learning and play spaces; particularly for young children and Rory Hyde, an architectural researcher, curator and writer at the Melbourne School of Design.

Architecture's Achillies heel is its perception as an elite creative discipline. But when you think about it, architecture has no other choice but to be accessible — the built environment is something we all use, regardless of our social status or income. But for architectural scholar and curator, Rory Hyde, what's often recognised as 'good' architecture often serves the former — the expensive private homes and institutional buildings that shine in the design glossies. That's why he's co-created the ArchitectureAU Award For Social Impact, a new award devised to recognise projects that promote the common good.

The New Curator: Exhibiting Architecture and Design (Routledge, 2021) examines the challenges inherent in exhibiting design ideas. Traditionally, exhibitions of architecture and design have predominantly focused on displaying finished outcomes or communicating a work through representation. In this ground-breaking new book, Fleur Watson unveils the emergence of the ‘new curator'. Instead of exhibiting finished works or artefacts, the rise of ‘performative curation' provides a space where experimental methods for encountering design ideas are being tested. Here, the role of the curator is not that of ‘custodian' or ‘expert' but with the intent to create a shared space of encounter with audiences. To illustrate this phenomenon, the book explores a diverse, international range of exhibitions. Divided into six themes, a series of project profiles are contextualized through conversations with influential curators and cultural producers such as Paola Antonelli, Kayoko Ota, Mimi Zeiger, Catherine Ince, Aric Chen, Zoë Ryan, Beatrice Leanza, Prem Krishnamurthy, Marina Otero Verzier, Brook Andrew, Carroll Go-Sam, Rory Hyde, Eva Franch i Gilabert, Patti Anahory and Paula Nascimento. Featuring over 100 color illustrations, this highly designed, beautiful book offers an innovative contribution to the field. An essential read for students and professionals in architecture, design, art, visual culture, museum studies, curatorial studies and cultural theory. The book also features a foreword by Deyan Sudjic and an afterword by Leon van Schaik AO. Bryan Toepfer, AIA, NCARB, CAPM is the Principal Architect for TOEPFER Architecture, PLLC, an Architecture firm specializing in Residential Architecture and Virtual Reality. In Episode 28 of A is for Architecture, I speak with Professor Harriet Harriss (RIBA, ARB, Assoc. AIA, Ph.D., PFHEA, FRSA), Dean of the School of Architecture at the Pratt Institute, New York. We talk about Harriet's writing, educational practice and academic advocacy, and discuss two of her recent books, Architects After Architecture: Alternative Pathways for Practice, which she co-edited with Rory Hyde and Roberta Marcaccio, published by Routledge in 2021, and Working at the Intersection: Architecture After the Anthropocene: 2022, Volume 4 in RIBA Publishing's Design Studio series, co-edited with Naomi House and published this year. I met Harriet as an undergraduate in Manchester. She was impressive then, and remains so, publishing, teaching, researching, speaking and writing on varied subjects. You can follow Harriet on Twitter, and on LinkedIn. You should watch her recorded lectures too, particularly Harriet's discussion with Patrick Schumacher in 2019, as part of Dezeen Day, and In Session: Design Curricula for Climate Crisis for the Royal College of Art in 2020 with Dr. Delfina Fantini van Ditmar. Future Practice (written by Rory Hyde) revealed alternative methods of design practice at the edge of architecture. Nine years since it's publication, it is even more important that we empower emerging designers to have a more expansive approach to their practice. Challenges within today's society demand we confront conventional practice with collaboration—and become more adaptable for an uncertain future. Hear about experiences outside traditional practice with a line-up of esteemed guests in a lively tag-team conversation as part of the annual MRelay series. Featuring over ten speakers, this experimental talkfest explores alternative modes of practice and ask the question—can we rethink design education, and the opportunities available to graduates? In a sports relay, a team covers a distance in turns, passing a baton from one runner to the next. In MRelay, thinkers, activists, provocateurs, architects and design doyennes share insights and ideas in this marathon conversation. It's fast-paced, exhilarating and, best of all, deeply unpredictable. Hosted by Monash Architecture Around group. This event was part of Melbourne Design Week 2022.

In this conversation, the multidisciplinary panel featuring Andy Fergus, Maddi Miller, Amelia Leavesley and Rory Hyde, moderated by Lily Di Sciascio and Woodrow Smith, seeks to answer the question: How can we repair our city? The Small Homes Service, initiated by Robin Boyd in 1947, sought to popularise the modern home and make it available to a broad public. It had an immense positive impact on the then burgeoning suburbs, with an estimated 15% of new homes in Victoria being built as part of the scheme. But toward the end of his life Robin Boyd could already see the deleterious effect suburban sprawl was having on the physical and social fabric of the city, advocating for new medium-density typologies. Boyd’s warnings went unheeded, and the suburbs continue to extend further into the horizon today. Meanwhile, the practice of architecture has all but abandoned the fringe, instead hitching its wagon to the boutique luxury market of the inner ring. Could these issues be addressed with a new Small Homes Service today? What would such a programme look like? If he were here now, what would Robin Boyd do? Join historian Phillip Goad and curator Rory Hyde as they evaluate the legacy of the Small Homes Service, and invite you to join a discussion as to what form a revived version of it could take today. With thanks to the Melbourne School of Design for their support. We acknowledge the Robin Boyd Foundation for the fantastic work they do.
