Viktor is an impressive documentary that relies on sound to tell it's story. The film's protagonist is a deaf photographer living in Ukraine, documenting the Russian invasion of of his country after he finds out he is not allowed to sign up as a soldier. Using innovative sound design to immerse the audience in Viktor's POV (or more accurately POH, point of hearing), the film focuses on his frustration at being unable to fight in the traditional sense and his passion for photography, as a way to serve his country. This spoiler free conversation with Sound Designer Peter Albrechtsen, Sound Designer/Foley Artist Heikki Kossi and Re-recording Mixer Tim Nielsen, discusses how they manipulated the sound in the film to approximate how Viktor hears and just as importantly, when to employ these techniques. The sound design for Viktor evolved drastically from the start of postproduction to the final mix. They began with hard rules for when and how to twist the audio. Yet for the final version, all those rules were thrown out the door. It is an interesting case study following the journey a soundtrack to find a film's “voice”. The sound team interview is followed up with a one on one talk with Viktor's director Olivier Sarbil. Dozvieme sa, akých miestnych sprievodcov a horských vodcov tu Viktor stretol, ako sa mu dýchalo vo výške nad 3 000 metrov, a Viktor Devečka sa podelí aj o emotívne momenty z vrcholu Rinjani. He shows how these techniques enable the pain of problems to be worked through and systematically solved, thereby producing growth. He argues that most people try to avoid the pain of dealing with their problems, when it is through facing the pain of problem-solving that life becomes more satisfying and meaningful. 2. Frankl, Viktor. Man's Search for Meaning. Beacon Press, 2000 First published in 1946, Dr. Frankl recounts his experiences surviving the death camps of the Holocaust and describes how it gave him a new understanding of the way people find meaning for their lives. According to Frankl, one can find meaning in work, in love for another, and in the courage required to endure suffering. While passing through the darkest pits of the human capacity for evil, he didn't emerge angry, resentful, or nihilistic; rather, he was encouraged, optimistic, and hopeful by observing what he describes as man's ultimate freedom and responsibility—to choose one's atitude in any given set of circumstances. 3. Martin, James. The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything. HarperOne, 2012. While not primarily addressed to the non-believer, non-believers will profit from reading this book for an intelligent, rational explanation on why it is important to pray, to examine one's actions, and to hold those actions up to a higher standard. Martin is unlike most contemporary American religious writers. Rather than offering words of disapproval and judgment, he writes words of understanding, wisdom, justice, acceptance, and love. The Jesuit Guide is not only filled with helpful advice on living the examined life, but it faithfully describes Christianity as a place of hope, faith, and caring.

In Episode 443 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with former investment banker turned global strategist Viktor Shvets, whose books The Great Rupture and The Twilight Before the Storm provide an audaciously comprehensive and compelling framework for understanding the forces shaping our world. These include technology and finance, amplified by climate change, demographics, and a series of socioeconomic and geopolitical shocks that have created the once-in-a-century superstorm now enveloping Western democracies. Viktor and Demetri spend the first hour of this episode exploring Shvets' central critique of neoliberalism and why he believes that much of the current crisis stems from this failed ideology. They compare today's sociopolitical and economic dynamics to those that overtook the world in the 1930s, focusing on technology-driven social disruption, a decline in the marginal utility of labor, runaway asset prices, repeated financial shocks, pandemics, climate stress, migration, and a deep loss of faith in institutions, in our collective identity, and in our shared capacity to solve problems. The second hour turns to questions of policy design, institutional reform, and portfolio strategy. Viktor and Demetri debate the pros and cons of redistributive solutions such as universal basic income and more heavy-handed fixes to America's broken healthcare system and antiquated educational model. They also stress-test alternative modes of sociopolitical organization such as despotic feudalism, techno-communism, or models that attempt to better balance the more extreme outcomes that a highly technologized society like ours would produce. The two end the episode with a conversation about digital currencies and the disruptive potential that decentralized finance will have on money and banking.
