Bronnen:  Krabben (2020). Multiple Aurealis, Ditmar, and Shirley Jackson award winner Kaaron Warren joins us for this week's episode, along with old friend of Coode Street and fellow Locus reviewer Ian Mond, mostly to discuss Kaaron's wonderful new novel The Underhistory, how it does or doesn't align with traditional genre categories, and what such categories mean anyway. Ian explains his notion of literary horror, and Kaaron suggests her intriguing concept of Gothic crime fiction. As always, the talk takes off in various directions ranging from short stories vs. novels, the challenges of publishing and marketing, and the growing awareness of Australian fiction on the world stage. Being a creature of many colours, the novel was shortlisted for two crime fiction awards (Ned Kelly, Davitt) as well as making the Tiptree Honor Book list and winning two speculative fiction awards (Aurealis, Ditmar). Until that year, she really didn't know if she could pull together a crime-themed short story or novel. Niven at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, 2007 Laurence van Cott Niven (/ˈnɪvən/; born April 30, 1938) is an American science fiction writer.[2] His 1970 novel Ringworld won the Hugo, Locus, Ditmar, and Nebula awards. With Jerry Pournelle he wrote The Mote in God's Eye (1974) and Lucifer's Hammer (1977). The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America gave him the 2015 Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award.[3] His work is primarily hard science fiction, using big science concepts and theoretical physics. It also often includes elements of detective fiction and adventure stories. His fantasy includes the series The Magic Goes Away, works of rational fantasy dealing with magic as a non-renewable resource. Biography Niven was born in Los Angeles.[2] He is a great-grandson of Edward L. Doheny, an oil tycoon who drilled the first successful well in the Los Angeles City Oil Field in 1892, and also was subsequently implicated in the Teapot Dome scandal.[4] Niven briefly attended the California Institute of Technology[5] and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics (with a minor in psychology) from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas in 1962. He also completed a year of graduate work in mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles. On September 6, 1969, he married Marilyn Wisowaty, a science fiction and Regency literature fan. Work Niven is the author of numerous science fiction short stories and novels, beginning with his 1964 story "The Coldest Place". In this story, the coldest place concerned is the dark side of Mercury, which at the time the story was written was thought to be tidally locked with the Sun (it was found to rotate in a 2:3 resonance after Niven received payment for the story, but before it was published).[6] Algis Budrys said in 1968 that Niven becoming a top writer despite the New Wave was evidence that "trends are for second-raters".[7] In addition to the Nebula Award in 1970[8] and the Hugo and Locus awards in 1971[9] for Ringworld, Niven won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story for "Neutron Star" in 1967.[5] He won the same award in 1972, for "Inconstant Moon", and in 1975 for "The Hole Man". In 1976, he won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette for "The Borderland of Sol". Niven frequently collaborated with Jerry Pournelle; they wrote nine novels together, including The Mote in God's Eye, Lucifer's Hammer and Footfall. Niven at Stanford University in 2006 Niven has written scripts for two science fiction television series: the original Land of the Lost series and Star Trek: The Animated Series, for which he adapted his early story "The Soft Weapon." For The Outer Limits, his story "Inconstant Moon" was adapted into an episode of the same name by Brad Wright. Niven has also written for the DC Comics character Green Lantern, including in his stories hard science fiction concepts such as universal entropy and the redshift effect. Several of his stories predicted the black market in transplant organs ("organlegging"). Many of Niven's stories—sometimes called the Tales of Known Space[10]—take place in his Known Space universe, in which humanity shares the several habitable star systems nearest to the Sun with over a dozen alien species, including the aggressive feline Kzinti and the very intelligent but cowardly Pierson's Puppeteers, which are frequently central characters. The Ringworld series is part of the Tales of Known Space, and Niven has shared the setting with other writers since a 1988 anthology, The Man-Kzin Wars (Baen Books, jointly edited with Jerry Pournelle and Dean Ing).[10] There have been several volumes of short stories and novellas. Niven has also written a logical fantasy series The Magic Goes Away, which utilizes an exhaustible resource called mana to power a rule-based "technological" magic. The Draco Tavern series of short stories take place in a more light-hearted science fiction universe, and are told from the point of view of the proprietor of an omni-species bar. The whimsical Svetz series consists of a collection of short stories, The Flight of the Horse, and a novel, Rainbow Mars, which involve a nominal time machine sent back to retrieve long-extinct animals, but which travels, in fact, into alternative realities and brings back mythical creatures such as a roc and a unicorn. Much of his writing since the 1970s has been in collaboration, particularly with Jerry Pournelle and Steven Barnes, but also Brenda Cooper and Edward M. Lerner. One of Niven's best known humorous works is "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex", in which he uses real-world physics to underline the difficulties of Superman and a human woman (Lois Lane or Lana Lang) mating.[11]

Having recorded several extra episodes in February & March in the lead-up to Season 4, it's a true delight to sprinkle a bunch of these bonus conversations into the new season, both as a surprise & also my sincere way of thanking you for making the podcast more successful than it's ever been before. While eventually, we will ease back into weekly releases, for now, I hope you're enjoying these frequent uploads & finding a lot of great movies to explore. Returning for the first time since season one, we have the witty & wonderful Maria Lewis. A bestselling author, screenwriter, & film curator based in Australia, over the past eighteen years of her career, Maria Lewis has built a great reputation as a storyteller across a diverse range of mediums she's the author of over ten internationally published novels, including the upcoming MOCKINGBIRD: STRIKE OUT from Marvel, slasher THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT, & the Aurealis award-winning SUPERNATURAL SISTERS series. As a screenwriter, she has worked on projects for AMC, Netflix, SBS, Stan, ABC, DC Comics, Ubisoft, & many more. She is the writer, producer researcher, & host of AWGIE award-winning audio documentaries THE PHANTOM NEVER DIES about the first superhero & JOSIE & THE PODCATS about the 2001 cult film, which was produced by her best friend Blake Howard. And this year, she's making her directorial debut with the short film THE HOUSE THAT HUNGERS, based on her Aurealis and Ditmar-award nominated short story of the same name. In this highly freewheeling lively conversation, Maria & I take a look at two excellent, though overlooked studio-made genre hyphenate romcoms from the 2010s, including James Mangold's hilarious screwball action romantic comedy KNIGHT AND DAY from 2010 & 2019's political romcom LONG SHOT from director Jonathan Levine. With frequent shout-outs & asides to other films, stars, & more that we enjoy, ranging from director Philip Noyce's brilliant SALT to other films which manage to subvert the romcom genre trope of a power imbalance between couples in inventive ways, this discussion, which breezes by in 52 minutes, is guaranteed to make you smile. Warning: This episode contains explicit language, best suited for adults. In Episode 28 of A is for Architecture, I speak with Professor Harriet Harriss (RIBA, ARB, Assoc. AIA, Ph.D., PFHEA, FRSA), Dean of the School of Architecture at the Pratt Institute, New York. We talk about Harriet's writing, educational practice and academic advocacy, and discuss two of her recent books, Architects After Architecture: Alternative Pathways for Practice, which she co-edited with Rory Hyde and Roberta Marcaccio, published by Routledge in 2021, and Working at the Intersection: Architecture After the Anthropocene: 2022, Volume 4 in RIBA Publishing's Design Studio series, co-edited with Naomi House and published this year. I met Harriet as an undergraduate in Manchester. She was impressive then, and remains so, publishing, teaching, researching, speaking and writing on varied subjects. You can follow Harriet on Twitter, and on LinkedIn. You should watch her recorded lectures too, particularly Harriet's discussion with Patrick Schumacher in 2019, as part of Dezeen Day, and In Session: Design Curricula for Climate Crisis for the Royal College of Art in 2020 with Dr. Delfina Fantini van Ditmar. (There's a lot more, believe, so have a look around.) Enjoy, why don't you. www.aisforarchitecture.org + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Music credits: Bruno Gillick.

Martin si prošel zásadním životním zlomem. Celý svůj život zasvětil byznysu par excellence. Pracoval v několika nadnárodních řetězcích v mnoha zemích. Nespal, nejedl, zanedbával životosprávu i rodinu. Hotely. Letadla.

Například: Generální ředitel a předseda představenstva Spar. Viceprezident pro obchod Svazu obchodu a cestovního ruchu ČR. Jednatel společnosti Billa. Klíčový muž skupiny REWE v Rusku, Pobaltí (Litva, Lotyšsko), na Ukrajině. Jenže úspěch a pracovní vypětí si u Martina vybraly svou daň. Kumulovaný stres se začal projevovat na zdraví, až Martin jednoho dne upadl do komatu.

Creative duo NIKE SULWAY and SHAUNA O'MEARA are the Convo Couch with Kel today chatting about their recent book "WINTER'S TALE" which won the 2020 Norma K Hemming Award for Short Fiction. This award honours excellence in the exploration of gender, sexuality, class or disability in speculative fiction work. Which Winter’s Tale does in the most beautiful and interesting way. Nike Sulway is a multi award winning Australian writer, poet and scholar, who writes everything from speculative to literary fiction. She specifically likes to play with the realms of fantasy and fairytale using them to explore sexuality, gender and the relationships of women in interesting ways.  Shauna O’Meara is a Ditmar and Aurealis Award nominated Australian artist, writer and a vet with a passion for all things science fiction. The list of nominations for her many varied works is seemingly endless. Her work has appeared in publications and anthologies such as Cosmos Magazine, Writers of the Future, Andromeda Spaceways, Winds of Change and The Never Never Land. Shauna is currently in the process of creating her first graphic novel and writing a television series. Together they are a mighty powerhouse of talent and through Winter’s Tale they are speaking to a growing section of youth who are searching for a sense of belonging and a new type of identity. One with less rules and restrictions. One that stems from just who we are not where we sit on the gender spectrum. One that is about people not sex.  SHOW NOTES: Writes4Women www.writes4women.com Facebook @writes4women Twitter / Instagram @w4wpodcast W4W Patreon https://www.writes4women.com/support-us-on-patreon Nike Sulway Twelfth Planet Press 'WINTER'S TALE" http://www.twelfthplanetpress.com/products/merchandise/winters-tale Facebook @nike.sulway Shauna O'Meara Web - https://theshaunacorner.wordpress.com Facebook @shauna.omeara.501 Twitter @OMearaShauna Pamela Cook www.pamelacook.com.au Facebook @pamelacookauthor Twitter @PamelaCookAU Instagram @pamelacookwrites Listen Up Podcasting (Kel Butler) www.listenuppodcasting.com.au Facebook @kelbutler / @listenuppodcasting Twitter @KelB     See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, Jonathan and Gary discuss the parameters of climate-influenced SF, the usefulness or not of the term 'cli-fi' (with increasing numbers of SF works set all or partly in the Arctic or Antarctic) and, inevitably, the beginning of the awards season, with the Aurealis and Ditmar awards, the BSFA awards,  and the nominees announced this past weekend for the 2018 Hugos. Who is being celebrated on the ballot, and which works were we surprised to see omitted? As always, we hope you enjoy the episode! Correction and apology During this episode we use the incorrect gender pronouns for Yoon Ha Lee. We used she/her when we should have used he/him. We apologise unreservedly for this, and will be sure to correct it in future episodes.

Story: “Calliope: A Steam Romance” by Andrew J. McKiernan Her voice is of a host angelic, but fallen. Her every breath breeds melodious paeans that tear at my soul — in ways both tender and cruel — and I weep with pain and joy to hear them. For, as surely as Eros struck Apollo and Daphne, am I so sorely wounded by her song. But be that barb of gold or lead? Ah, now therein lies the tale. I first saw her down at the Quay or, more rightly should I say, I heard her… Andrew J. McKiernan is an author and illustrator from the Central Coast of New South Wales. First published in 2007, his stories have since been short-listed for multiple Aurealis, Ditmar, and Australian Shadows awards and reprinted in a number of Year’s Best anthologies. Last Year, When We Were Young, a collection of his short stories, won the 2014 AHWA Australian Shadows Award for Collected Work. He can be found online at

This month's episode of The Writer and the Critic sees your hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, discuss the results of the recently announced Ditmar and Tin Duck Awards and dissect the almost inevitable Great Ditmar Controversy of 2011 that exploded onto the interwebs soon afterwards. For those interested in reading further, Kirstyn has blogged about the issue here and here. The books up for discussion on the podcast this month are The Resurrectionst by Jack O'Connell (chosen by Ian ) and Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood (recommended by Kirstyn ). Ian mentions a review by Andrew Wheeler when speaking about the O'Connell novel and Kirstyn vaguely remembers this online argument while arguing an Atwood tangent of her own. For those wishing to avoid spoilers and skip ahead, discussion of The Resurrectionist begins at 30:00, while Oryx and Crake starts around 47:00. They then turn their attention to a book which was recommended by one of their lovely listeners -- Tansy Rayner Roberts. Or maybe two books. Or possibly one book which has had a run-in with a guillotine: Black Out and All Clear by Connie Willis. Ian steals his best lines quotes extensively from this review by his new Bestest Twitter Friend, Jonathan McCalmont. Ian also gets very, very frustrated and swears quite a bit. The discussion of Blackout / All Clear begins at 1:09:09 Check back in at the 1:27:15 mark for some listener feedback and final remarks. Next month The Writer and the Critic will hit the road once again to record their first episode live in front of an actual audience at Continuum 7 in Melbourne! Their very special guest will be the brilliant and awe-inspiring, Catherynne M. Valente, who has picked Embassytown by China Mieville for Ian and Kirstyn to read. Ian's recommended book for June will be Among Others by Jo Walton, while Kirstyn has chosen Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King. Read ahead and join in the spoilerific fun!

The Writer and the Critic elects to stay at home and rest its feet this month as your hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, give you a rundown on the recently announced ballots for the Ditmar and Chronos Awards. Ian grabs a shovel ad promptly digs himself a Ditmar-shaped hole. Kirstyn highlights the emergence of the podcast as a dominant form of "fan publication" on both ballots. They then discuss gender bias in The Periodic Table of Storytelling (which is based on the TV Tropes wiki) -- not to mention gender bias on Ian's hoodie! -- as well as a related blog post by Ann Leckie. Ian laments the likely closure of Salon Futura but hopes Wizard's Tower Press (and its fine online book store) will continue. Kirstyn still refuses to buy an iPad. Above/Below by Stephanie Campisi and Ben Peek is a listener-recommended title which is comprised of two linked novellas published as a single "flip-style" book. There are very few spoilers in this review but if you haven't read the book and wish to skip ahead, the discussion begins at 39:30 and ends around 54:15. The official podcast books are The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz (chosen by Ian) and Liar by Justine Larbalestier (recommended by Kirstyn). Be warned: both these discussions contains MASSIVE SPOILERS!! They begin at 54:15 for Oscar Wao and 1:20:20 for Liar. If you haven't already read the books, you may want to come back later when you have. Especially when it coms to Liar. Kirstyn and Ian are very serious about that. Look how sternly their fingers are wagging! To hear a final wrap-up, brief mention of feedback, and some very exciting podcasty news, listen in from 1:39:00. For the next episode, Ian has chosen The Resurrectionst by Jack O'Connell while Kirstyn has picked Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. In addition, they will be discussing the new split-novel/duology, Black Out and All Clear by Connie Willis, which was recommended by a listener. Whew, that's a whole bunch of words to get through! *** The Writer and the Critic adopts a book club approach to its discussion and will assume its listeners have either read the books in question or don't care if they find out that it was all but a dream in the end. There will almost certainly be spoilers, so you are encouraged to read the chosen titles ahead of time. It'll be much more fun that way and Ian and Kirstyn won't get near as many death threats! ***

Larry Niven, the award-winning author of Ringworld, The Mote In God's Eye, and many other hard science fiction novels, is our featured guest. He reveals that Robert A. Heinlein was the secret proofreader for his and Jerry Pournelle's novel The Mote In God's Eye. He describes Jerry Pournelle's personal edit war in Wikipedia, how they and other science fiction writers are helping the Department of Homeland Security, and his own work on Land of the Lost, The Outer Limits, and Star Trek the Animated Series. He also discusses illegal organ banks, room temperature superconductors, and agrees that there is a possibility that your host's personal theory may be correct concerning high-temperature lifeforms having evolved in the ocean of liquid iron surrounding the earth's core. Other topics include: nanotech molecule chain, how to move the earth, the Neanderthal Genome Project, human rights for AIs, the Wikipedia page concerning Jesus, exoplanets, the singularity, and the persistent rumors about a movie version of Ringworld. Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the September 24, 2008 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 74 minutes] Larry Niven's writing is primarily hard science fiction of an adventurous style which often involves large science concepts and theoretical physics. His fantasy includes The Magic Goes Away series which treats magic as a non-renewable resource. He has also written humorous stories; such as those collected in The Flight of the Horse. He has won the Hugo, Locus, Ditmar, and Nebula awards.
