How are American Christians thinking about engaging non-Christians in the United States? According to recent Barna research there are 60 to 80 million Americans who don't fit the paradigm that a lot of Christians have about those outside of the church. They are not really hostile to discussions about faith and spirituality and are actually spiritually curious at the right moments. Join Ted Esler's conversation with Mark Matlock, the Executive Director of the Urbana Student Missions Conference and also author of Faith for the Curious: How an Era of Spiritual Openness Shapes the Way We Live and Help Others Follow Jesus. Mark Matlock is a facilitator of innovation and impact, helping organizations adapt to changing times through turning research based insights into action. Infinite Inning 324: The Way We Live Now (Again) In a largely improvised episode we reexperience current events through the lens of Joe DiMaggio's 1941 hitting streak, counting the days while the war stays away, while once again a government effort requires us to rally ‘round Jackie Robinson—and Abraham Lincoln too, and we do so while checking in on the better brand of shortstops offered by the Negro Leagues' Newark Eagles and Philadelphia Stars (and shame Connie Mack one more time). The Infinite Inning is not only about baseball but a state of mind. Steven Goldman discusses the game's present, past, and future with forays outside the foul lines to the culture at large. Expect stats, anecdotes, digressions, explorations of writing and fandom, and more Casey Stengel quotations than you thought possible. Along the way, they'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out?

Humans tend to crave certainty. In the face of the unknown, we rely on prescriptions and narratives to help us feel better and make sense of what we can't yet see coming. For many, sitting with uncertainty like what we are facing now, post-election in the United States, is deeply unsettling and even destabilizing. They brace for what might come next, anxious and ruminating, and looking for answers. It's a natural human response, but it can also leave us stuck in a loop that offers no comfort, only more fear and anxiety.People will look to the leaders around them for comfort and for answers. And while you may not be able to provide the definitive answers anyone seeks, you can help those you lead and love feel supported and grounded as we all navigate these difficult times.Today, I'm sharing strategies, practices, and thoughts that can help us move through uncertainty, for ourselves and the ones we love and lead.Listen to the full episode to hear:How and why to establish “certainty anchors” for those you leadWhy an honest, compassionate presence is more beneficial than pretending you have all the answersWhy we need to balance courage and comfort, and the fine line between caring and caretakingWhy finding grounding routines is essential, no matter how small or scrappy or imperfectHow claiming your personal power and agency will help you feel less stuckHow we build trust and resilience in our relationships amidst uncertaintyLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaFollow the Unburdened Leader on SubstackSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead, Brené BrownEP 114: Why Bother? Social Contagion and the Foundations of a Good Society | Nicholas Christakis, MD, PhD, MPH

One of the most fascinating concepts in human health is the idea of social contagion, meaning that emotions, behaviors, and health outcomes can spread through social networks, much like infectious diseases. Examples in the medical literature abound: if a person becomes obese, their friends have a significantly higher chance of becoming obese — even their friends of friends have increased odds of becoming obese. Similarly, someone who quit smoking is likely to create a ripple effect through their social networks, influencing many more people to quit smoking. Social contagion affects life and death itself — after the death of a spouse, the surviving partner's mortality risk increases, and conversely, strong social networks are protective against early death. Much of the groundwork of our understanding of the powerful health effects of social networks laid by Nicholas Christakis, MD, PhD, MPH, a physician-turned-social scientist who is the author of multiple best selling books, including Apollo's Arrow: The Profound and Enduring Impact of Coronavirus On the Way We Live (2020) in Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society (2019).In this episode, Dr. Christakis shares his remarkable path to medicine and sociology, beginning from witnessing his mother's struggle through serious illness, to his foray into palliative medicine, and finally to his life's work on the social, economic and evolutionary determinants of human welfare. We discuss the mechanisms by which social contagion functions, why modern medicine does a disservice to patients by atomizing their medical problems, how the COVID-19 pandemic illustrates the effects of social networks on public health, the philosophical implications of living an interconnected life, and why human beings are wired to build good societies through our capacity for love, friendship and cooperation. In this episode, you'll hear about 3:17 - Dr. Christakis's path to medicine through witnessing his mother's serious illness 15:05 - How Dr. Christakis became passionate about studying the effects of social networks 24:43 - How social networks affect an individual's health 31:28 - The negative effects that COVID-19 restrictions had on patients and their loved ones38:58 - The central thesis of Dr. Christakis's 2019 book Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society 50:38 - Dr. Christakis's thoughts on how to live a meaningful life  Dr. Nicholas Christakis can be found on Twitter/X at @NAChristakis.Visit our website www.TheDoctorsArt.com where you can find transcripts of all episodes. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, rate, and review our show, available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. One could say with motherhood, you know what you're signing up for - but you certainly have no idea how it will feel. As a Child of Divorce and Child Protection Worker with a background in Psychology and Social Service Work, Jamie Scrimgeour thought she knew what she was signing up for as a childless bachelorette when she decided to marry a man with three kids and an ex. But as I am sure you can guess, she felt like she had no freaking idea, and quickly found herself  in-over-her head. Finding a lack of resources for step moms, she created her own and now supports thousands of step moms in doing the work to show up as their best selves. In this episode, we spoke to assumptions her clients make of her and each other and unique challenges stepmoms face.  She spoke to the guilt stepmoms feel in typical motherhood spaces - the things they would be shamed to say and the cycle they get into trying to prove themselves.  She also shared advice for ex's and offered grace for dads.IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVERED...The dichotomy of "loving like they're your own" yet needing to "know your place"Things stepmoms are ashamed to sayWhy learning how to disengage without disconnecting is a critical, relationship-saving skillDON'T MISS-Questions every parent can ask themselves to gain clarity + intentionality moving forward as a family// MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE //Book: The Origins of You: How Breaking Family Patterns Can Liberate the Way We Live and Love by Vienna Pharaon// CONNECT WITH JAMIE SCRIMGEOUR //Website: jamiescrimgeour.comInstagram: @jamiescrimgeourProgram: https://www.kickassstepmom.com/I believe in you + I'm cheering you on.Come say hi!  I'm @parent_wholeheartedly on Insta.Apply to work together: parentingwholeheartedly.com/ApplySend us Fan Mail over Text.Support the showSTART HERE:CALM + CONFIDENT: THE MASTERCLASS Master the KIND + FIRM Approach your Strong-Willed Child Needs WITHOUT Crushing their Spirit OR Walking on Eggshells *FREE* - www.parentingwholeheartedly.com/confident

How does curiosity show up in your life, work, and relationships?Does your curiosity influence your strategy or planning? Or do you follow your curiosity to gain more knowledge or deepen your understanding of topics or viewpoints? Do you lean on curiosity to help you get to know someone better in ways that satisfy your interests or deepen your connection?Do you keep following your curiosity even if it leads to uncomfortable or unknown places? Our curiosity can reveal much about us, our interests, and our capacity for hope, discomfort, and imagination. But just as important is HOW we use our curiosity. When we wield our curiosity to prove a point, we can cause division and harm. And when we use curiosity to honor others and our vulnerability, we can build the bridges necessary to cultivate the spaces we dream about and desire.Today's guest has combined his own lived experiences and research on curiosity and bridge-building into a powerful, nuanced book and set of practices on curiosity and how we use it in our relationships.Scott Shigeoka believes curiosity has the power to transform your life and change the world. It's the key to connection, healing, and personal growth. It's a critical practice for your relationships, leadership, and life satisfaction. In his book, Seek: How Curiosity Can Transform Your Life and Change the World, Scott teaches readers to strengthen their curiosity muscles with his signature DIVE method.Scott has appeared on The Today Show, Harvard Business Review, NPR, The Guardian, and CNBC, and he has spoken at Google, Microsoft, Pixar, IDEO, Meta, Airbnb, and universities and schools around the world and teaches at The University of Texas at Austin.Listen to the full episode to hear:How Scott's cross-country road trip showed in real-time that approaching fears with curiosity builds connection, understanding, and possibilityThe limits and boundaries to approaching others with curiosity in the momentWhy we need to bring curiosity and humility when we catch our own biasesHow social and structural power dynamics influence how we balance curiosity, discomfort, and anger in a groupThree key questions to ask yourself to identify if your curiosity about another person or situation is invasive or predatoryHow letting go of certainty opens up possibilities and allows for growthLearn more about Scott Shigeoka:WebsiteSeek: How Curiosity Can Transform Your Life and Change the WorldInstagram: @scottshigeokaLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:Rising Strong: How the Ability to Reset Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead, Brené BrownThe Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, Tom HanksBillie Eilish - LUNCHInside Out 2Beyoncé - RENAISSANCE

On this week's episode, Sabrina chats with Vienna Pharaon, a licensed family and marital therapist. They delve into the concept of origin wounds and explore how childhood experiences shape our lives and influence our relationships. Vienna talks about how unresolved pain often manifests as patterns in our daily lives, and urges us not to get stuck in the past but to acknowledge and understand it. Origin wounds can stem from issues of worthiness, trust, belonging, prioritization, and safety, and recognizing these can help us heal. Sabrina and Vienna highlight the importance of examining the roles of our caregivers in our upbringing, noting that even those who were less involved can cause significant pain. Healing involves grieving and witnessing these wounds, allowing us to make different choices. Understanding how our childhood affects our present relationships, particularly how fear of abandonment and rejection play into these core wounds, is crucial. Vienna advises against comparing our pain to others, affirming that even without major trauma, our wounds are valid and deserve attention. She and Sabrina also discuss how these wounds impact our self-worth and the way we relate to others, suggesting that by addressing and understanding our behaviors and patterns, we can break destructive cycles and build healthier relationships. Do our genes have an impact on how many friends we'll have in life and the kinds of people we gravitate towards whether our friends are connected to each other? How can the study of social networks help us better prepare for the next pandemic? Nicholas Christakis is a professor of natural and social sciences and directs the Human Nature Lab at Yale University. His research focuses on social networks and biosocial science, all of which are central points in his books like, Apollo's Arrow: The Profound and Enduring Impact of Coronavirus on the Way We Live and Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society. He and Greg discuss how genes can influence our social networks, the dynamics of social contagion, and why the arc of human evolution bends towards goodness. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Why even minds as brilliant as Isaac Newton's succumb to financial manias01:01:41 Our ability to function in groups depends, in part, on our ability to copy the mood of others around us. And all of us have had this experience. (01:02:20) It's to build group solidarity. And the other is it's efficient in terms of learning. In other words, rather than having to learn something yourself, you just copy what others are doing. And that's extremely efficient. So rather than having to do your own research and figure out what stock really has good fundamentals, you're like, well, I'll just buy what everyone else is buying that sometimes leads to really over-the-top, frothy bubbles that are quite dangerous for all involved. The spread of germs is the price we pay for the spread of ideas23:07 One of the reasons we affiliate with each other and live in groups is to avail ourselves of this process of social learning, but in so doing, we expose ourselves to other risks—for example, the risks of infection, the risks of violence, and so on. So natural selection over time has balanced these costs and benefits and yielded, I argue, a structure of networks that obeys the principle that the benefits of a connected life outweigh the costs. Otherwise, we would live separate from each other. We wouldn't form networks.Network science in a 21st-century approach06:45 Network science offers a 21st-century approach because it connects the collective and individual layers. It explains how individuals become members of collectivities, become members of groups by identifying the pattern of connections between people. It's kind of a structural approach.Do modern technologies influence human social interactions?17:17 There's no question that new technologies are affecting our social interactions in a number of ways. But the fundamental reality of our desire for social connection and our susceptibility to technology's social influence is not changing over a hundred-year time span. This has been shaped by ancient and powerful evolutionary forces.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Lumpers and splitters Adam Smith Émile Durkheim Karl MarxFrancis GaltonDiffusion of Innovations Thomas Valente Richard DawkinsSteven Pinker Gemeinschaft and GesellschaftGuns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared DiamondStumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at Yale UniversityHis Work:Apollo's Arrow: The Profound and Enduring Impact of Coronavirus on the Way We LiveBlueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good SocietyConnected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives -- How Your Friends' Friends' Friends Affect Everything You Feel, Think, and Do

Episode #307. According to Robin Sharma, eight factors define wealth – and only one of them is money. Join me in today's episode as I sit down with this leadership expert and bestselling author to unpack what it truly means to be wealthy. You'll learn about what happy people have in common, how to find more fulfilment, and how to perform a full reset on your life. Robin pulls back the curtain to offer a glimpse of what his habits look like and how you can implement habits to help you become your best self. Plus, discover why you should consider eating out alone, why you should be thinking about death, and plenty more in this insight-packed conversation. In any conversation considering the relationship between money and happiness, it's important to note that not everyone has the time or resources to commit to self-improvement. If you're in this camp, you're far from alone. My advice would be to take the core principles discussed in this episode and find some goals that are reasonable for you. Even if you can only set aside fifteen minutes a day, any steps you can take have the potential to make a big difference in the long run. Do you feel frustrated by recurring struggles with self-doubt, hypervigilance, and overwhelm?Behind many of your inner doubts, self-judgements, fears, and insecurities lie echoes from old betrayals or relational hurts. These breaches of trust in important relationships don't necessarily lose their impact on how you lead and work just because they happened a long time ago.So when you're doing something new or high stakes, or there's an experience in a relationship at work or in your personal life, or you respond to a collective trauma that taps the echoes of your old wound, it can bring up old ways of responding or old patterns that impact how you honor your boundaries and values. And the expectation that you should ‘be over this by now' when you are human and working with others adds to your stress and frustration. But the reality is that healing from relational wounds and betrayal traumas often comes in stages and seasons, and you may need support along the way.Deran Young is a licensed therapist, New York Times Best-Selling Author, former military mental health officer, and the founder of Black Therapists Rock. This nonprofit organization mobilizes over 30,000 mental health professionals committed to reducing the psychological impact of systemic oppression and intergenerational trauma. She obtained her social work degree from the University of Texas, where she studied abroad in Ghana, West Africa for two semesters, creating a high school counseling center for under-resourced students. She is a highly sought-after diversity and inclusion consultant working with companies like Facebook, Linked In, Field Trip Health, and YWCA. “Part of middle life is that hopefully there's a little bit of wisdom there. And I think that is part of what we gain as we go through this journey of life is that there is wisdom that's accrued, which allows us to exist a little bit more in the complexity and nuance of things. I believe so much of this work is that we have to hold grace and compassion. And we also have to hold ownership and accountability and responsibility. And I feel that way, right? It's like, okay, if there's something that happened in our childhood or something happened in our teenage years, something that happened in our twenties, right? It's hard to process those things really early on. And especially when we're younger and really immature, because the lens is so narrow. I think as we grow and hopefully as we get wiser, that the lens opens.” So says Vienna Pharaon, a therapist whose practice centers around helping individuals—and couples—identify old patterns, patterns that often belong to the family system, that have them by the throat. And then, of course, she helps people break them and find new stories for how they show up in the world. Vienna is the host of the podcast, This Keeps Happening and the author of the national bestseller The Origins of You: How Breaking Family Patterns Can Liberate the Way We Live and Love, where she outlines the main themes that she sees in her practice. There is much in these pages to which we can all relate, as she articulates five core, original wounds that revolve around worthiness, belonging, trust, safety, and prioritization.
