Emmalea Russo is here to discuss her ongoing course PSYCHO-COSMOS and the upcoming workshop we are hosting together DREAMS AS ART: Freud, Jung, Lacan In this discussion we dive into Emmalea's year-long class, "Psycho Cosmos," which explores the intersections of psychoanalysis, astrology, and art. The class features visuals, slides, and conversations, and has attracted a diverse group of artists, astrologers, and psychoanalysts. We highlight synchronicities, such as references to Freud's seminal dream “Irma's Injection” and Louise Bourgeois' spiders, and discuss the astrological significance of Neptune entering Aries. We discuss our upcoming workshop on Freud, Lacan, and Jung, and their relationship to art, where we'll explore dreams and life as creative expressions, and artworks as mirroring dreamwork. Indoor air quality is slowly becoming a mainstream issue, but how can we improve public awareness and emphasize the huge damage it is causing economically, to our health and even our children's brains? Today, we hear from one of Australia's lead clean air campaigners, who has been working on a framework to make clean air as important as clean water. Having worked in public health for almost fifteen years, first combating the harms of tobacco, we learn why indoor air needs to be next on the agenda and the pathways experts are suggesting to get there. Our guest has been working with governing bodies and multi disciplinary teams to progress Australia's indoor air quality. With a background in radiation oncology and a passion for sustainability, she is currently working with the Burnett Institute and University of Melbourne. Christians have approached the first chapter of Genesis differently over the centuries. There are those who hold to young earth creationism, day-age theory, gap theory, and progressive creationism, just to name a few. Oftentimes defenders of a particular view will provide biblical, scientific, and historical evidence for their position. Our focus today is on the use of church history to find witnesses for this or that view.  Rather than cherry picking a quote here and quote there, it's better to read ancient Christians in their own context to be sure we are interpreting them correctly. My guest today is Dr. Andrew Brown, a lecturer in OT and Hebrew at Melbourne School of Theology. He did his thesis on the creation week in Genesis 1 and 2 and has written a book called Recruiting the Ancients for the Creation Debate. Dan Hill is the director of the Melbourne School of Design at the University of Melbourne, and author of Dark Matter and Trojan Horses: A Strategic Design Vocabulary and Designing Missions. And he's the opening speaker at the inaugural Designing with AI conference, where he'll be presenting “Designing for the Infrastructures of Everyday Life”. Like it or not, AI is a growing part of our infrastructure—not just the infrastructure of our phones, our computers, and the internet—but that of our physical world. It's increasingly used to support the very fundamental systems that maintain our cities, hospitals, utilities, and educational systems. On some levels, this is cause for concern. After all, we've seen other implementations of AI (think riding-sharing services) that have not lived up to their promise but have instead aggravated some of the problems they sought to address. Dan is a big-picture guy with an ability to draw principles from history and other sectors. He understands that utilizing AI is inevitable. The challenge is recognizing the interconnectedness of our various systems and working together to build infrastructures that truly create better life experiences for all. What You'll Learn from this Episode: - The many facets of infrastructures - How AI is currently being used and how it might be used in the future to support our infrastructures - Why ride-sharing is not exactly an AI model worth repeating - Why the Japanese and Finnish models work well in those environments but aren't necessarily transferable to more diverse cultures - Why quality of life will only improve with a more holistic, integrated design approach Quick Reference Guide 0:37 - Introduction of Dan 3:49 - AI as infrastructure 8:30 - How AI might be used to further support infrastructure systems 12:09 - Will the impact of AI actually make life better? 18:59 - Plug for Managing Priorities by Harry Max. Dr Van Dam discusses his 2018 paper ‘Mind the Hype: A Critical Evaluation and Prescriptive Agenda for Research on Mindfulness and Meditation' which levels serious criticisms at his own field of mindfulness research and contemplative neuroscience, taking aim at poor methodological practices, problems with definitions, and the strong incentives in the field which can conflict with the pursuit of science. Dr Van Dam reveals what he calls the unholy triad of mindfulness research, explores the theme of elitism in meditation, and raises questions about the studies conducted on Buddhist contemplative Matthieu Ricard, known as the ‘happiest man in the world'. Dr Van Dam also considers the degree to which mindfulness can be meaningfully isolated apart from its traditional religious contexts, notes the adverse effects of meditation, and shares his thoughts for the individual meditator on how to practice and who to trust in todays meditation marketplace. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep213-mind-the-hype-dr-nicholas-van-dam-chelsey-fasano

Welcome to Living Well with MS. In this episode we are delighted to welcome Associate Professor Sandra Neate as our guest! Sandra is from the Neuroepidemiology Unit (NEU) at the University of Melbourne where she researches lifestyle modification and diet quality for people with MS. This webinar was recorded in September 2022 as part of our 'Finding Hope with Overcoming MS - 10th-anniversary edition' webinar series. You can watch the whole webinar here or the podcast highlights on YouTube here. Keep reading for the key episode takeaways and bio.  Make sure you sign up to our newsletter to hear our latest tips and news about living a full and happy life with MS. And if you're new to Overcoming MS, visit our introductory page to find out more about how we support people with MS. Selected Key Takeaways: Evidence shows there are benefits to regular meditation (28:57) “The most compelling result was that meditation resulted in reduced depression, and increased feelings of mastery. It's about the feeling that one's life is under one's own control and not controlled by external forces, feelings of empowerment, that sort of thing. The interesting finding was that those who were meditating even as little as once weekly for 20 minutes were still experiencing a benefit.” Sticking to the Overcoming MS diet can lead to improved health outcomes (21:34) “We've conducted two studies that have looked at sticking with an MS-specific diet. Now some of these are named MS diets, like the Swank diet, the Overcoming MS diet, the Wahls style, etc. One of our studies looked at whether following an MS-specific diet led to improved health outcomes. It found that persistent adherence to the Overcoming MS diet led to lower fatigue, disability and depression than both non-adherence and ceased adherence to the diet. So, your ability to stick with the diet is a very important thing.” The Neuroepidemiology Unit wants to provide the tools for people with MS to take control of their health (45:15) “We're trying to build a picture of what lifestyle modification can do in MS. By doing that we hope to help people with MS find confidence and empowerment through the knowledge they've gained. We hope to provide people with MS with the tools to self-manage because the principles are fairly simple. The practicalities may not be so simple, but the tools are there. We hope that people will live with hope, based on the evidence that we've provided.” Related Links:  Watch the original webinar here Read the Overcoming MS Handbook: Roadmap to Good Health Listen to previous episodes with Sandra  Season 3E36 NEU - What's on the research horizon Season 4E47 Hello 2022, Hello OMS Handbook Find out more about the NEU here New to Overcoming MS? visit our introductory page  Visit our website  Follow us on social media: Facebook  Instagram Twitter YouTube Pinterest  Don't miss out:  Subscribe to this podcast and never miss an episode.
