Plans unveiled for high-tech '10-minute city' in Seoul︱韩国首尔推出“10分钟城市”社区项目The idea of a "15-minute city," in which residents can all reach work and leisure facilities within a quarter-hour walk -- or cycle -- of their homes, has gained significant traction among urban planners during the Covid-19 pandemic.“15分钟城市”,即居民都能从家步行或骑车15分钟内到达工作和休闲场所。 Now, a group of architects is planning an even more ambitious neighborhood in South Korea's capital, Seoul: a 10-minute city. Dubbed "Project H1," the development is set to transform an old industrial site into an interconnected "smart" city. Combining eight residential buildings with co-working offices and study spaces, the 125-acre district is also set to house entertainment venues, fitness centers, swimming pools and even hydroponic urban farms. Designed by Dutch architecture firm UNStudio and backed by Hyundai Development Company (a real estate firm owned by the conglomerate behind the car maker of the same name), the neighborhood will also be completely car-free. A press release for the project claimed that "all the conveniences of the city" will be within a 10-minute walk of people's homes. In a statement, UNStudio co-founder Ben van Berkel said that residents' "daily life experience" is the project's "top priority."UNStudio建筑师事务所的联合创始人本·凡·贝克尔在一份声明中称,居民的“日常生活体验”是整个项目的“重中之重”。"We do this through the inclusion of a rich density of uplifting, curated on-site experiences that provide an extensive range of options for how they can spend their living, working and leisure time, thereby also saving them the time needed to travel elsewhere in the city -- because with time that is saved, more time is created," he is quoted as saying. A spokesperson for UNStudio confirmed that project has been green-lit but did not disclose when it is likely to break ground. For now, a series of CGI renderings hint at how the neighborhood will look, with public plazas, gardens, green roofs and "nature zones" connected by pedestrian walkways.UNStudio的一名发言人证实该项目已获批,不过没有透露何时动工。 The architects also said that clean energy will be generated on site, while systems to capture and store rain are being designed to reduce water use. The "15-minute city" concept was first proposed by French-Colombian academic Carlos Moreno in 2016, and was more recently popularized by Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, who proposed making the French capital a "ville du quart d'heure" -- a quarter-hour city -- during her recent reelection campaign.2016年,法裔哥伦比亚籍学者卡洛斯·莫雷诺首次提出“15分钟城市”的概念,近期在巴黎市长安妮·伊达尔戈的连任竞选活动中得以推广。 Critics have suggested that the concept could cause gentrification by further concentrating wealth in the most accessible and convenient districts. The desirability of "15-minute" neighborhoods may, in turn, result in home prices that exclude low-income and marginalized communities. But the Covid-19 pandemic has seen growing interest in the concept. With people around the world working from home and avoiding public transport, urban planners have begun pedestrianizing streets and reimagining how cities manage dense populations. Writing in the academic journal Smart Cities earlier this year, Moreno said, "The emergence of this pandemic exposed the vulnerability of cities ... and the need for a radical re-thinking, where innovative measures need to be tailored to ensure that urban residents are able to cope and continue with their basic activities, including cultural ones, to ensure that cities remain both resilient and livable in the short and long terms." traction英 [ˈtrækʃn];美[ˈtrækʃn] n. 牵引;牵引力,拉力curate英 [ˈkjʊərət , kjʊəˈreɪt];美[ˈkjʊrət , kjʊˈreɪt] n. In this week's episode, Ryerson University wants to build the first 100 per cent, digitally-enabled building in the world, only to tear it down in the years to come. British designer Thomas Heatherwick's studio is collaborating with architecture office Veretec to create a campus for global pharmaceutical company UCB in southeast England. In an EU scheme inspired by clever forest-dwelling giants, Finland's VTT Technical Research Centre will construct a 500-sq-m demonstration building made of novel wood-based materials and components to showcase the benefits of timber in rural and urban development. Designed by Dutch architects UNStudio, the building will have wood thermal insulation materials, structural insulation panels (SIPs) and wood-plastic composites, among other components. With efforts to find new ways to lock up carbon, developers, architects and net zero committed companies are asking, "Is wood the new concrete?"
Inside Keynote Lecture: Insights into Healthy InteriorsIn light of the challenges society is facing, UNStudio's founder Ben van Berkel, will present on the integral and human-centric approach to health, flexibility and technology in their work. Designing healthy interiors requires thinking about the relation between different scales. UNStudio has produced a wide range of work, from public buildings to infrastructure, offices to residential as well as interiors and products to urban master plans. With their focus distinctly placed on the future, in 2018 the practice founded a sister company, UNSense, an arch tech company that aims to create impact by developing technology and innovative solutions that improve quality of life for individuals, communities and the planet.
Contrary to popular belief, many of the luxuries commonly associated with high end residential developments are no longer limited to the affluent alone. A growing consciousness of all things beneficial to health and happiness is resulting in a trickling down effect and a widespread societal demand for healthy living environments. Today's residents want convenient shared amenities which encourage a sense of community and promote physical and psychological wellbeing. On the one hand we are witnessing the global development of big data and smart cities, while on the other there is call for ‘social cities' with a more creative mix of work, welfare, active leisure and community sharing. Health and wellbeing have recently evolved from a seemingly universal social right, to the responsibility of the individual. From experiments in human gene-editing and biohacking, to increased demand for affordable fresh and healthy produce for all, a new egalitarian ideal is emerging which increasingly renders the exclusive, inclusive. This episode was recorded at WAF 2016. This week, we have the pleasure of sharing a conversation with Marisa Cortright who is a Business Development Officer at UNStudio. Now, this episode is a bit different because Marisa is not a designer or an architect but, with degrees in architectural and urban history from the Bartlett School of Architecture and Barnard College, she is immersed in the world of architecture through business development.I enjoyed this conversation a lot because Marisa and I discuss a different side of architecture. I think it's important as designers and architects for us to be truly honest with the work we do and what our work and our profession as a whole represent. I first found Marisa through the article she wrote in 2019 - "Death to the Calling: A Job In Architecture Is Still A Job". It's really an eye opening piece where she talks about the overlooked side of the profession. We'll be diving into this article in the episode! In the meantime, enjoy, get inspired and let's get real.Article: https://failedarchitecture.com/death-to-the-calling-a-job-in-architecture-is-still-a-job/Beat by Doctunes aka OmzziSong Rambo by Henri-Paul
The future is changing faster than ever, whether through technological progress or unforeseen events such as the global corona pandemic. This has shown that designing a building is much more than just the aesthetic and functional parameters. Since its foundation over 30 years ago, UNStudio has always taken a different approach. With an experimental and architectural approach that has been refined over the years – from the master plan to the design object. The task of designing a completely new district in a grown european city is rarely offered nowadays. A great opportunity to look into the future viability of cities and their parameters. In today's podcast episode we are talking about how architecture and urban planning can make people healthier and happier with our guest Ben van Berkel from UNStudio.
Today's guest is *Paolo Zambrini* , CEO of ENGRAM Studio, EIDO and HERE. He's an industry veteran and one of the most influential people on the Italian archviz scene. His work is very well known even beyond national borders, and he has worked for top-tier clients such as Snohetta, MVRDV and UNStudio. Paolo is deeply passionate about how images are born. We took a deep dive into *the principles of imagemaking* , and we discussed how we instinctually read images and what we should prioritize when creating one. We also discussed *the notion of “storytelling”* in our industry, the fashion of branding ourselves as “storytellers”, how storytelling interacts with the image reading… and why it’s not such a simple deal as “telling a story”. The world of work is changing. It's clear that we need to re-imagine the workplace to become flexible and future-focused, but also reconsider how the role of the architect will develop over the coming years... Framed by these questions, we hosted a discussion between UNStudio architects Ben van Berkel, Marianthi Tatari and Harlen Miller.
As part of our ongoing research into playgrounds, we were very happy to host Denisa Kollarova, author of Aldo van Eyck: Seventeen Playgrounds, at the UNStudio office in Amsterdam, to discuss the contents of her study. Of Aldo van Eyck's original 700 playgrounds built across Amsterdam, only 17 remain. What can we learn from van Eyck about designing for social cohesion and imagination?
Review Architecture is an online journal of architecture books, founded and curated by UNStudio Architect Ayax Abreu Garcia. Its goal is to sift through architectural literature, find the gems, dissect their content, create a spark in people’s minds, and help people become more interested in architectural literature. Recently Ayax held an interview with Ben van Berkel to discussed UNStudio written works like MOVE and Knowledge Matters, but also his influences from Mark Wigley to Mohsen Mostafavi, to his former teacher Zaha Hadid… If you would like to read the interview with Ben van Berkel for yourself, you can read it on Review Architecture here: http://www.reviewarchitecture.com/interviews/
