Filled with the Spirit
Being filled with the Spirit is necessary for knowing and doing the Will of God. More than that - it is the Will of God for Christians to be filled with the Spirit. When we are, it will come out in our praise of and thanks to God.

If we want to experience the transforming power and blessings of Holy Spirit in our lives, we need to be wise in how we walk. We can open our lives to being filled with the Spirit by engaging in spiritual interactions, singing to God, giving thanks to God, and striving to imitate Jesus.
Embrace God’s Word with us as Dave Shumaker, an Elder at Midland Free, preaches from Ephesians 5:15-21 in the message, Walk in Wisdom. ***** Walk wisely to redeem the time (v. 15-16) Walk wisely to understand God’s perspective (v. 17) Walk wisely by embracing God’s Word (v. 18-20) ***** APPLICATION: 1. What is the driving focus of your life? 2. Are you truly seeking God’s perspective on life? 3. Are you wasting your life with altered states and drunkenness? 4. Are you finding ways to fill your life with God’s Word?

Have you ever gone online to a website or an app to do something useful - Reserve a table, research information, or check something for work? But one link comes another and 30 minutes or an hour passes and you could not remember why you picked up your phone in the first place? Whenever this happens to us, it is a reminder that technology can either be used as a tool to experience long-term joy or it is something that uses us and replaces long-term joy with short-term pleasure. Jesus says that to follow Him, we must be willing to invest our lives in following him. If we say we want to follow Jesus and then spend our time doing things that do not draw us closer to Him, aren't we putting short-term pleasures in front of Him? How then should we change to spend our time wisely and efficiently?
Circumspect (KJV word) = “careful to consider all circumstances and possible consequences”. “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise…” Paul says. We should work at being so connected with Jesus Christ that our relationship with Him touches & shapes every step that we take. The time that could slip away into uselessness we scoop up and rescue in order to use for good. Walking in wisdom means we don’t regularly waste away our time. We live in dark days, and so we must passionately shine our light while we can. Our new life in Christ affects our relationships with other people: - Eph. 2:11-22 – our relationships with one another are now different - Eph. 5:22-33 – our relationships with our spouses are different - Eph. 6:1-4 – our relationships with our kids are different - Eph. 6:5-9 – our relationships in the workplace are now different - Eph. 6:10-24 – our relationship with the world is now different Only through Christ can we have healthy relationships. The word that the ESV translates “debauchery” [v.18] is a broader term that encompasses many aspects of unholy living, including but not limited to sexual immorality, drunkenness, crude talk, and generally out-of-control behavior (Timothy & Peter use the word “riotous”). Paul’s instructions about alcohol appear in a conversation about how being "in Christ" changes everything, including our relationships with others. It’s a continuation of God’s instruction to the church on one-anothering. The wise person will not be filled with alcohol or sexual immorality or idolatry, because you cannot be filled with the Spirit if you are already full of those things. It is never God’s will for a Christian to be drunk. The only way for Christ to increase is for us to decrease. Submit means “to arrange under”. We submit to other people because there is a biblical order to godly authority; we submit to others because Christ is the ultimate authority over our lives. Husbands & employers & parents don’t hold places of authority to subjugate those under them, they are in places of authority because God put them there and so God can humble them to go serve in love. At the core, any submission is a result of “reverence for Christ” [v.21]. If we don't revere (respect, submit to) the authority of Jesus, we will not submit to any earthly authority either, which is an evidence of how much (or how little) we are filled with the Spirit.
When we gather as a church for worship, why is singing part of what we do together? Singing and music – they’re wrapped up in our humanness. Music connects us together in special ways and it connects within us in special ways. God designed it that way, because singing comes from God. Since we believe the origin of singing and music is God Himself, we also believe He intended for us to use it to edify one another and to glorify Him. When we are filled with the Spirit and not the things of this world, what is going to come out? We are going to address one another in song, give thanks to God, & submit to one another (Eph. 5). Paul lists various types of music – psalms, hymns, & spiritual songs. We believe this gives room for musical variety when the church gathers, not to do whatever we wish, but to build up the body through Scripture-focused creativity. Edifying others through our singing in the church is precisely one of the ways we glorify God. By singing together we call our brothers and sisters to delight in His beauty and treasure Him. But we don't sing our opinions. The Word of Christ is to be the content of our lives and the content of our songs. When we come to church and don’t feel like singing a word, we are reminded that no matter what is happening in our lives, the One we’re singing to has not changed. As a church we sing unchangeable truths about Jesus Christ. If music is from God and is to be used to give Him glory, we should sing songs that focus on Him.
