In the opening message of a new summer series on the Book of Job, Pastor Josh Gatewood explores how we respond to unexpected and unexplained suffering. Through Job chapter 1, this sermon examines the tension between the brokenness of our world and the goodness of God, highlighting three essential truths: God's sovereignty, the mystery of His ways, and the steadfast love of His heart. Whether you're currently walking through hardship or preparing for future trials, this gospel-centered teaching reminds us that suffering is not meaningless and ultimately points us to Jesus, the better Job who suffered for us. In this powerful message from Redeemer Church, Pastor Josh Gatewood unpacks the end of Paul's first missionary journey in Acts 14:19-28. He highlights four marks of the early church—constant opposition, gospel preaching, pastoral leadership, and deep discipleship—while challenging believers to pursue a thriving summer walk with Jesus rather than merely surviving it. Through themes of supernatural change, uncomfortable sacrifice, and frequent encouragement, this sermon equips you to deepen your faith, stay rooted in community, and keep your eyes fixed on Christ even amid summer disruptions and trials.   Website: redeemermidland.org Instagram: instagram.com/redeemermidland Facebook: facebook.com/RedeemerMidland   At Redeemer, we seek to be a Gospel-Centered, Missional Family. As part of the Future of Texas series in partnership with Texas 2036, this episode explores the region powering not just Texas — but increasingly the global economy: the Permian Basin. Through the Future of Texas podcast series, Texas 2036 brings together diverse perspectives as we explore the opportunities and challenges facing our state over the next ten years. The views expressed in this program are those of the individual speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views of Texas 2036, its staff or its Board of Directors. Host Brad Swail is joined by Tracee Bentley, President and CEO of the Permian Strategic Partnership, and Jordan Wat, Director of Government Affairs at Texas 2036, for a wide-ranging conversation about the future of energy, workforce growth, infrastructure, and community development in West Texas. The discussion begins with a striking reality: if the Permian Basin were its own country, it would rank as the fourth-largest energy producer in the world — behind only Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. But this conversation goes far beyond oil production alone. Bentley and Wat explain how the Permian Basin has become one of the most strategically important economic regions in the United States, supporting everything from electricity reliability and manufacturing to public education funding and technological innovation. The discussion covers: • Why the Permian Basin produces more than 50% of U.S. oil and gas • How drilling technology and AI transformed energy production • Why Texas energy production continues hitting record levels • The growing electricity demand driven by AI and data centers • Pipeline, transmission, and grid infrastructure bottlenecks • Natural gas, LNG, and Texas grid reliability after Winter Storm Uri • The role of the Permian in stabilizing global energy markets • Workforce shortages and the need for 176,000 additional workers by 2040 • Housing affordability challenges in Midland and Odessa • Health care access and specialty care shortages in West Texas • Water scarcity, produced water, and future recycling technologies • Career and technical education investments tied to workforce needs • Why literacy and workforce readiness remain major long-term concerns The episode also highlights how public-private partnerships are reshaping the region. Bentley explains how the Permian Strategic Partnership has invested more than $200 million into infrastructure, education, workforce development, and health care — leveraging those investments into billions more through state and federal collaboration. A major takeaway is that the future of the Permian Basin is no longer just an “energy story.” It is increasingly a story about building sustainable communities capable of supporting long-term economic growth. Looking toward 2036, both guests argue that Texas' continued success depends on whether the state can match energy growth with investments in roads, schools, workforce training, housing, water infrastructure, and grid reliability. The message is clear: the future of Texas is deeply tied to the future of the Permian Basin. 00:00 — Intro + Future of Energy overview 01:35 — Why the Permian Basin matters globally 03:22 — Record energy production and drilling technology 05:04 — Jobs, workforce growth, and the Texas economy 07:18 — Education funding and workforce pipelines 09:09 — Innovation, AI, and modern energy production 13:26 — Electricity demand, LNG, and grid reliability 16:24 — Infrastructure bottlenecks and pipeline capacity 22:04 — Global energy markets and the Permian's role 25:15 — Community life in Midland and Odessa 26:57 — Roads, schools, healthcare, and housing challenges 32:32 — Career training and workforce development 35:33 — Public-private partnerships and long-term planning 37:42 — Literacy, workforce readiness, and recruitment 45:06 — Water challenges and produced water innovation 47:22 — Looking toward 2036 + closing thoughts Watch Full-Length Interviews: https://www.youtube.com/@TexasTalks

On this Mother's Day, Pastor reflects on the joys and sorrows of the day while diving into Acts 13, where Paul and Barnabas preach the gospel in Antioch of Pisidia. The response is powerful: crowds beg to hear more, the whole city gathers, and many Gentiles rejoice and believe—while others react with jealousy and persecution. The core message is that true, resilient joy is found only in Jesus and the Holy Spirit, not in changing circumstances, as echoed in the lives of Augustine and C.S. Lewis. This sermon reminds us that the gospel brings deep, enduring joy that the world desperately seeks, turning ordinary people into bold witnesses.   Website: redeemermidland.org Instagram: instagram.com/redeemermidland Facebook: facebook.com/RedeemerMidland   At Redeemer, we seek to be a Gospel-Centered, Missional Family. The Comforter and Sasse's Farewell Speech Pastor Cogan John 14:15-21‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.‘I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.' What would you say on your deathbed, your last lecture, your farewell speech? Would you offer sage advice? Share your favorite stories? Or maybe crack a few jokes you've learned along the way? We don't get much of any of that from Jesus' farewell to his disciples. That's what we hear from that passage from John. We are still in the season of Easter, but today we return to the words he spoke to his disciples just before his crucifixion. At first he seems like he is doing something you're told not to do on a deathbed and that's asking for promises. It's as if Jesus is saying, “if you love me, promise me you'll keep my commandments.” Talk about manipulation and guilt?! But that's not what Jesus is after. It's not a conditional, if/then. He's not asking for a promise. Rather, Jesus is saying you'll know your love for me when you keep my commandments.More importantly, Jesus is the one making promises on his deathbed. “I will give you another Advocate and he will be with you forever”. That word for Advocate can be translated in many different ways: counselor, helper, but also comforter. Jesus is offering assurance to terrified disciples, telling them, “I cannot stay here with you, but don't worry. I am giving you the Holy Spirit, who will be a comforter to you.” Now that's a beautiful promise. I'm sure the disciples needed it. I'm sure some of you need it today! But what does that mean or look like? I mean how is the Holy Spirit going to give not just the disciples, but give you and I comfort here and now, in this life? Well I think I've seen that comfort in Ben Sasse, who is also giving his farewell speech. Sasse, as you may know, was senator from Nebraska, serving from 2013 to 2023. He left under his own volition and became the president of the University of Florida. Before all that, he was the president of Midland University, a small ELCA college in Midland, NE. Since early February, Ben has been doing interviews and podcasts at breakneck speed because he's dying. In December of 2025 Ben found out he had cancer. Actually, he found out he had five different types of cancer that had metastasized into 47 tumors, tormenting his torso and the rest of his body. They gave him 90 days to live. Which is perhaps why you have seen clips of him or his name on your social media feed. When asked why he's spending so much time with interviewers and journalists, he said, “I did not decide to die in public. But even with three to four months left to live, you have to redeem the time. There's only so many bits of unsolicited advice I can give my children. So, you journalists want to talk, and if you don't have anybody better, I'm your huckleberry.” From all I've seen and heard in the talks and interviews, Ben is doing a bit of everything in his farewell speech. He cracks some jokes, he tells great stories like one explaining what's happening in this photo of him, looking like he's a bit hungover or had a workout (you decide), and Chuck Schumer holding a giant cig in his right hand. And as expected he gives sage advice. Advice that comes with the clarity that, according to Ben, only comes with having a terminal diagnosis. For him, his cancer has clarified what matters and he feels a responsibility to use whatever time is left for the good of others. And while Sasse and I may be on different ends of the theological spectrum, his clarity on a number of issues is compelling. He speaks about everything from AI to politics and the way our screens, addictions, and tribalism are reshaping us. But what I find most compelling from his farewell speech is not the advice, stories, or hot takes. Rather, it's his regrets. He wishes he hadn't worked so much. He laments how much he traveled. He would have locked away phones and turned off screens at the dinner table, because you don't get that sacred time back. He would have taken sabbath more seriously, undistracted by sports or the ever present lure of work. He would have strengthened bonds with family: siblings, cousins, parents. And somehow he says all this without despair… , even though he has regrets, even though he knows deeply the mistakes he made, he still has comfort in these last days. In all the interviews I have seen and heard, Ben is noticeably weak, doped up on morphine and nauseous, yet something strengthens him. I mean look at him here with this interview with the NYT. He is literally bleeding from his face because he can't grow skin as a result from his chemo, yet he doesn't hide it one bit! How can he have such comfort in the midst of such regret, pain, evil, and death?I can't help but think this is the Comforter at work in one's life, the Holy Spirit giving comfort today in the here and now. Because what I hear in Ben Sasse is that he can name these regrets, these mistakes because he knows, he trusts that he is forgiven. Not only by his family, but by God, too. He can call cancer evil, but at the same time, sanctifying because he now has a divine dependence he never knew before and likely wouldn't have, had this not happened to him. He can call death the enemy, but also trust in the full healing that comes after it. Such comfort I can only understand as coming from outside of himself, from God at work through the Holy Spirit, assuring him of his forgiveness, giving clarity about what matters most, and supporting him when he can't support himself. It's tempting to hear comfort and imagine soft sheets, fluffy pillows, or simply a calmness. But I don't think that's the comfort Jesus promises nor what the Spirit gives. Comfort is not the removal of suffering, but the freedom to tell the truth. It's not emotional numbness but courage to face regret. And it certainly isn't empty platitudes, but the ability to face death without despair. The Spirit gives more than just coping skills. And I see that in Ben's farewell speech. He is still grieving. Still suffering. Still regretting. Still dying. And yet something holds him. Strengthen hims. Comforts him. And when I look at him and hear him, I can't help but believe that is the comfort of the Holy Spirit, the promise of Jesus manifested in this life. How this comfort comes? Or what exactly the Holy Spirit does to cause it? I don't know and Jesus doesn't explain it. Nor do I think Jesus is all that concerned in the mechanics. He is more interested in the promise, to the disciples, to Ben Sasse, and to you and I; that when you face regrets, when you are confronted by pain and evil, when death is inevitable, because it is, you will not be orphaned, left to face any of it alone. You have a comforter.I pray you know that comfort. I pray I offer it to you. I pray the Holy Spirit works through you to offer it to someone else.Because the truth is, we are all moving toward a farewell speech of our own. One day there will be regrets we cannot undo, suffering we cannot avoid, and a death we cannot outrun. And when that day comes, Jesus does not offer explanations. He does not provide escape. He promises this: you will not be orphaned. And maybe that is the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Not the removal of pain, but the assurance that even there, in grief, in weakness, in death itself, you are not abandoned. That is the work of the Father who promises, the Son who assures, and the Holy Spirit who abides with us still. Amen.

In this powerful sermon from Redeemer Church in Midland, Texas, Pastor Jason unpacks Paul's first missionary journey in Acts 13 and reveals the essential relationship between the Law and the Gospel. He shows how the Law reveals God's holy character and our inability to obey perfectly—leading either to pride or despair—while the Gospel brings the good news of forgiveness, rest, and transformation through Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the Law on our behalf. A timely message for anyone tired of guilt-driven religion, reminding us that Christianity is not “try harder” but “come to Jesus” for true freedom and grace.   Website: redeemermidland.org Instagram: instagram.com/redeemermidland Facebook: facebook.com/RedeemerMidland   At Redeemer, we seek to be a Gospel-Centered, Missional Family. This powerful message challenges us to examine where we stand in the crowd of Christianity. Drawing from John 8:31-36, we're confronted with a crucial question: Are we merely listeners, casual fans, or true disciples of Jesus? The journey from fan to disciple requires belief, willingness to grow through discipleship and mentorship, and ultimately full surrender. When we truly embrace this path, we discover that truth isn't just words or cultural definitions, but a person: Jesus Christ Himself. The Gathering Church is located in Midland, Texas. You can watch our live worship experience online at http://mygathering.live/Visit our website at https://www.mygathering.churchConnect with us on Social Mediahttps://facebook.com/mgatheringhttps://Instagram.com/mygatheringhttps://Twitter.com/mygatheringGOD | COMMUNITY | PURPOSE

What followed was an hour of Gary tracing his own formation from a kid on Union Road in Midland who couldn't stop staring at the crucifix, through graduate school, liberation theology, democratic socialism, and fifty years of theological labor held together by Rauschenbusch's conviction that capitalism has overdeveloped our selfish instincts and shrunk our capacity for public ends. © Clay Jones – https://claytoonz.substack.com On our political radar this week… The Trump Retribution Parade continues as his Department of Payback indicts James Comey for posting a picture of sea shells on social media. If that doesn’t work, they could try claiming the 6-foot-8 Comey's height poses an imminent threat to the safety of the President. New polling from the Detroit Chamber shows “Undecided” remains the leader in Michigan Democrats' battle for the U.S. Senate nomination. There's a new controversy in that race, with long-ago Tweets from Mallory McMorrow coming back to haunt her. Among Republicans, John James continues to lead Perry Johnson, Mike Cox, and the rest of the field. The one no-contest race: Jocelyn Benson has a 58-point lead in the race for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. The US Supreme Court has effectively repealed the last remnants of the Voting Rights Act, setting the stage for a possible new round of partisan gerrymanders. It comes as the last four black Republicans in Congress retire, leaving the GOP with the prospect of no black House members in 2027. The impact goes beyond the U.S. House of Representatives. In Michigan, it effectively eliminates majority-minority as a criterion for Michigan's Citizens Independent Redistricting Commission when it draws future state legislative district maps – quite possibly before the 2028 elections. The Donald Trump narcissism parade continues to grow. The latest: His snarling mug will now appear on commemorative U.S. passports, although Trump-free passports will continue to be available. And King Charles presented him with the ship's bell from the World War II submarine HMS Trump. One ominous sign: that ship was sold off and broken up for scrap in August 1971.  In response to the war of words over election integrity, Secretary of State Benson has announced that 2.1 million outdated voter registrations have been canceled since 2019 or are in the cancellation process. For the first time ever, this includes over 180,000 dormant registrations of people who haven't voted in a single election in the last 20 years or longer. Control of the state Senate will be decided Tuesday when voters in Michigan's 35th Senate District will decide whether Democrat Chedrick Greene or Republican Jason Tunney will represent them for the rest of the year in Lansing. The district includes Bay, Midland and Saginaw counties. The Democrats are heavily favored to win and maintain control of the Senate. The quote of the week comes from The Bulwark's Tim Miller: We're in the Fat Elvis era of the Trump presidency. A note on the passing of Senator Don Riegle. First elected to the U.S. House from Flint in 1966, he served 5 terms and then 3 terms in the Senate, where he succeeded the legendary Phil Hart. He was one of the few people ever elected to Congress from both parties, switching from Republican to Democrat in protest of the Vietnam War and the corruption of the Nixon administration. We also lost a friend of this podcast, former Detroit News reporter and later Department of Justice lawyer Jim Mitzelfeld. Jim and his reporting partner Eric Freedman won a Pulitzer Prize for their uncovering of a million-dollar corruption scandal in the state House Fiscal Agency. Jim died of melanoma a day short of his 65th birthday.   Joining the conversation this week is President of End Citizens United, Tiffany Muller. Mark and Walt Sorg talked with Tiffany Muller. She simultaneously leads the affiliated groups Let America Vote, and the End Citizens United/Let America Vote Action Fund – organizations dedicated to reversing what many consider one of the worst rulings of the Supreme Court in the last century which opened the floodgates for dark money funding of political campaigns. Since joining ECU, Tiffany has helped grow the group from a start-up to a nationwide organization with more than 4 million members and 1 million grassroots donors.

Can a Motorcycle Club Be Arrested Just for Wearing Colors?Short answer: No — not legally in most U.S. states.Wearing MC colors/patches is generally protected expressive speech under the First Amendment. And McDonald-Rivet released a statement critical of how delegates acted and voted at the Michigan Democratic Party Convention, in which her sister lost party's attorney general nominating race. Pat Johnston talks about McDonald-Rivet's record, and why it's a stark example of what working class voters don't want from their representatives in this day of The Trump Regime. In this week's "Last Call," Pat shares his thoughts on the Supreme Court's MAGA majority's decision to essentially eradicate the Voting Rights Act. 48:38-50:46: EndingPlease, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can!leftoflansing@gmail.comLeft of Lansing is now on YouTube as well!Music provided by Wanderbeats. Here's a quick breakdown of today's Black Dragon Biker TV topics (as of April 28, 2026):1. Mongols Club Member Shot on Highway A 58-year-old Mongols MC member from El Paso was shot multiple times while riding on West Loop 250 in Midland, Texas, on April 25. It was initially reported as a crash, but police confirmed gunshot wounds. He's in stable condition after surgery. No arrests announced yet. Mongols are a major 1%er club, and Texas has long-standing tensions between big clubs (Mongols, Bandidos, etc.). Classic "biker-on-biker" incident that fits the outlaw scene.2. E-Bike Crackdown in San Antonio AreaBoerne (just outside San Antonio) is ramping up enforcement on illegal e-bikes and electric dirt bikes. Police cite safety issues — kids riding recklessly, "biker gangs of 10-year-olds," sidewalk/endangering traffic complaints. This is part of broader Texas pushes on unregulated powered two-wheelers that don't meet e-bike classifications (pedals 750W motor + speed limits). Not directly aimed at motorcycle clubs, but it affects the wider two-wheeled community.3. German Police Raid Hells AngelsGerman cops (especially in North Rhine-Westphalia) have conducted multiple large-scale raids on Hells Angels chapters over the years, including recent ones involving hundreds to over 1,200 officers. Targets usually include organized crime, drugs, violence, and clubhouses. Germany is very aggressive toward outlaw clubs they view as criminal enterprises. This is ongoing — not a one-off.4. Harley Guindon and Satan's ChoiceHarley Davidson Guindon (son of original founder Bernie Guindon) reformed Satan's Choice MC in 2025 after it had patched over to Hells Angels years ago. He's been vocal on social media, feuding with some HA members, calling out "goofs," and pushing a "back to brotherhood, not corporate" message. Still generating headlines in Canadian biker circles as he tries to rebuild the club across provinces and beyond.5. Black Dragon's Instagram FeedStandard mix of MC history, protocol rants, current biker news, club drama, and his opinions. He's been active pushing his own projects like the Insane Dragons Motorcycle Collective (non-territorial support group).6. "Should Norway Be Vaporized Because of Too Many Liberal Leaders?"Classic Black Dragon hot take / satirical rant style. He's known for strong anti-liberal government commentary mixed with biker freedom themes.7. UAE to Withdraw from OPEC — Gas Prices Going Up Big news today: UAE announced it's pulling out of OPEC and OPEC+. This is shaking oil markets, especially with ongoing global tensions (Iran situation). Analysts expect upward pressure on gas prices as the cartel loses cohesion. Trump has been vocal on this too. Definitely something that hits riders in the wallet.Solid mix of current biker violence, law enforcement pressure, club politics, and economic/news angles — typical Black Dragon episode. If you want deeper dives on any one of these (especially the Mongols shooting or Guindon drama), let me know! Industrial water professionals often think about water in terms of treatment, compliance, reuse, and operational risk. John Durand brings a different but closely connected view: water as infrastructure, water as a managed resource, and water as a strategic part of energy development.  John Durand, one of the early pioneers of the water midstream sector and CEO of Magnificent Desolation, LLC, joins Trace Blackmore to explain how produced water moved from a disposal challenge to a large-scale infrastructure opportunity.  From Disposal Model to Managed Resource  John describes how the growth of horizontal drilling changed the scale of water management in the Permian Basin. A vertical well once used a fraction of the water required for today's horizontal wells, creating a need for pipelines, reuse systems, recycling strategies, and long-term infrastructure planning.  He explains that the water midstream sector emerged because the old approach—trucking water or simply sending it to disposal—could not keep pace with the volume. Today, the conversation has shifted toward produced water reuse, recycling, and the search for beneficial uses outside of oil and gas.  Produced Water, Salinity, and Future Use  John notes that produced water can carry very high salinity, sometimes many times higher than seawater. That creates treatment challenges, especially when thinking beyond oilfield reuse and toward broader industrial applications.  He also points to future opportunities for produced water in data centers, electric generation, cooling applications, and possibly other beneficial reuse pathways. The key message is clear: water once treated as waste may become an important resource if the industry continues to innovate responsibly.  Infrastructure, Trust, and Public-Private Partnerships  Beyond pipelines and treatment, John emphasizes the role of relationships. He shares examples from Midland and Odessa, where long-term water supply arrangements and wastewater treatment infrastructure created value for both communities and industry.  For water professionals, the lesson extends beyond oilfield water. Large infrastructure projects require technical expertise, capital, public trust, and long-term credibility. John's experience shows that durable solutions depend as much on trust and collaboration as they do on engineering.  Staying Curious in a Changing Industry  John closes with a practical leadership reminder: stay curious, ask better questions, and keep learning. Whether the topic is produced water, AI, energy independence, or infrastructure, he encourages professionals to dig deeper and continue expanding their understanding.  Listen to the full conversation above. In this sermon from Acts 12 paster Josh Gatewood emphasizes that the Christian life is built on essentials we never outgrow: the wonder of God's grace and the priority of prayer. Through the contrast between Herod's pride and Peter's miraculous rescue, we see that God is sovereign over all circumstances—opposition, suffering, and even persecution—and continues to advance His kingdom. The story reminds us that following Jesus is not about comfort but surrender, and that pride leads to downfall while humility creates space for God's work to grow and multiply in our lives.    Website: redeemermidland.org Instagram: instagram.com/redeemermidland Facebook: facebook.com/RedeemerMidland   At Redeemer, we seek to be a Gospel-Centered, Missional Family. Through the example of the disciples and the teaching of Jesus, we see that true greatness in God's kingdom comes through humility and serving others. Jesus Himself modeled this by becoming less—choosing obedience, sacrifice, and the cross.

Episode OverviewIn this episode of The Articulate Fly fly fishing podcast, host Marvin Cash sits down with Aaron Chine, guide at Steelhead Alley Outfitters and accomplished visual artist based in Warren, Ohio, for a wide-ranging conversation about the intersection of fishing, guiding and fine art. Aaron came to fly fishing through Pennsylvania trout streams in his early teens and eventually found his way to Steelhead Alley through a mentorship network that includes Jeff Blood and Nate Miller, two of the fishery's most respected veterans. He joined Steelhead Alley Outfitters when Justin Schachilli and Patrick Robinson took over from Greg Senyo and has been guiding there ever since. The episode covers the full arc of Aaron's guiding career on Steelhead Alley, his philosophy on what makes a great guide and the seasonal rhythm of the Lake Erie tributary steelhead fishery from fall through early spring. On the art side, Aaron discusses his work in oil painting and murals — including a landmark 130-foot mural on the Scientific Anglers building in Midland, Michigan — his tattooing career at The Box Gallery and his perspective on the story and soul that human-made art carries in an age of AI-generated imagery. Upcoming Orvis collaborations round out the conversation.Key TakeawaysWhy finding migratory steelhead requires covering water aggressively rather than returning to yesterday's productive spotsHow the guide season on Steelhead Alley runs from fall through early spring, with November and March as peak periodsWhy showing clients a good time on the water — not just maximizing fish counts — defines long-term success as a guideHow using a grid method at large scale allows muralists to maintain proportion across massive public installationsWhy the story behind human-made art creates value and staying power that AI-generated imagery cannot replicateHow fishing and fine art intersect as sustainable parallel careers when neither alone provides full financial stabilityTechniques & Gear CoveredThis episode is more biographical than tactical, so the fishing content skews toward guiding philosophy and fishery structure rather than specific techniques or rigs. Aaron explains that steelhead on Steelhead Alley are migratory fish that move constantly, which means guides must put in the legwork to locate fish rather than relying on prior knowledge of productive lies — a discipline he credits largely to early mentors Jeff Blood and Nate Miller. He notes that tougher, more spread-out seasons demand even more aggressive water-covering to stay on fish. On the art side, Aaron discusses his medium in detail: he works primarily in oil on canvas, uses a grid-based scaling method for large murals and approaches large-scale work one block at a time to maintain proportion — the same technique taught in middle school art class, simply executed at 2-foot-by-2-foot scale. Scientific Anglers' signature red paint featured heavily in the SA building mural, which consumed 24 gallons of paint over seven days.Locations & SpeciesSteelhead Alley is the fishery at the center of this episode — specifically the Lake Erie tributaries along the Ohio-Pennsylvania-New York border, including Conneaut Creek and Cattaraugus Creek (the latter referenced in passing as Marvin's own experience fishing it with Jeff Blood). Steelhead are the primary target throughout the fall and spring seasons, with the fishery operating from roughly September or October through freeze-up in winter, and again through mid-April in spring. Aaron notes that conditions this season and last fall have featured more spread-out fish than peak years, reinforcing the fishery's migratory and weather-dependent nature. For summer fun fishing once the guiding season wraps, Aaron looks forward to smallmouth, pike and musky from a raft — a deliberately lower-pressure complement to the intensity of steelhead season.FAQ / Key Questions AnsweredHow does the guide season on Steelhead Alley typically run?Aaron describes a two-peak season: fall, running from September or October through early December or freeze-up, with November as the prime window; and spring, with March as the busiest month and trips running through mid-April. January and February fishing is weather-dependent — this year, freeze-up shut it down entirely. Guides work essentially every day during peak periods. What's the key to being a successful steelhead guide?Aaron's answer centers on showing clients a good time rather than chasing maximum fish counts. He acknowledges that guides naturally want to put big numbers in the net, but argues that good clients primarily want to experience the fishery, learn to cast and run better drifts and enjoy time on the water — particularly in seasons when fish are spread out and harder to locate. Why does finding steelhead require so much mobile, aggressive water coverage?Because steelhead are migratory fish that move constantly, productive lies from one day can be completely empty the next. Aaron emphasizes putting miles on the boots and staying mobile, especially in lower-fish-density seasons. This is a foundational piece of Steelhead Alley guiding culture, reinforced by mentors like Jeff Blood and Nate Miller. How did Aaron approach painting the massive Scientific Anglers mural in Midland, Michigan?Aaron divided the 130-foot wall into 2-foot-by-2-foot grid squares and treated each block as its own self-contained piece, maintaining proportion across the full installation. He worked from sun-up to sundown for seven straight days to complete it before the 80th anniversary party. The project used 24 gallons of paint, including eight gallons of Scientific Anglers red for the background alone. How does Aaron think about the threat AI poses to visual artists working in the fishing and outdoor space?Aaron acknowledges that AI can produce visually competent imagery quickly and without paying an artist, but argues that it lacks the story and soul behind human-made work. He believes audiences — and fellow artists especially — can spot AI imagery immediately, and that the personal narrative connecting an artist to their work is ultimately what creates lasting value and authentic connection with buyers and fans.Related ContentS7, Ep 18 – License to Fish: The Intersection of Art and Angling with Cody Richardson of Cody's FishS3, Ep 145 – All Things Steelhead Alley with Jeff Blood (Part I)S3, Ep 153 – All Things Steelhead Alley with Jeff Blood (Part II)S6, Ep 97 – Fly Fishing Wisdom and Industry Pet Peeves with Greg SenyoConnect with Our GuestFollow Aaron on Instagram.Follow The Box Gallery on Instagram.Follow Steelhead Alley Outfitters on Instagram.Follow the ShowFollow The Articulate Fly on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and YouTube.Follow our Substack newsletter for episode updates, tips and resources.Support the ShowShop through our Amazon link to support the podcast.Join our Patreon community to support the show.If you are in the industry and need help getting unstuck,...

The Rescue of Baby Jessica McClure

On October 14, 1987, Reba McClure and her eighteen-month-old daughter, Jessica, stopped by the Midland, Texas home of her sister for a visit. As Reba sat in the backyard watching Jessica play with some neighborhood children, she heard the phone ring and went inside to answer it. When McClure returned to the backyard a few minutes later, she saw the other children staring at the ground on the far-side of the yard, but Jessica was nowhere to be seen. To Reba McClure's absolute horror, while she was inside on the phone, Jessica had fallen twenty-feet down into the well on her sister's property and become lodged in a section only fourteen-inches wide. Rescue teams arrived at the house not long after Jessica fell into the well, but the situation proved far more complicated than anyone had expected; they needed to dig a parallel shaft to rescue the girl, but any amount of significant vibration in the earth could have collapsed the well entirely. In the early days of cable news twenty-four-hour news coverage, the rescue of Jessica McClure became one of the most watched events in the United States. However, while the rescue of the girl was everyone's primary concern, the wall-to-wall coverage itself quickly became a major part of the story, as ordinary smalltown Americans were shoved into the spotlight and questions over rights to the story (and rights to privacy) took center stage.
