The New Church is sometimes called "The Church of the New Jerusalem." This is based on a description of a golden city, the New Jerusalem, descending from heaven to earth, as described in the book of Revelation. Each detail of this city symbolizes some aspect of the New Church. Our focus this Sunday will be on the Golden Light that filled the city. Gold stands for Love, light for Wisdom. In the New Church, the heart must always be love, from the Lord, guided by His wisdom. This is a description of the New Church as it ought to be. Our job, here and now, is to make sure that we embody that love, and let the Lord's wisdom guide us, as a church and as individuals.
In this episode of The Leader's Journey Podcast, Jim sits down with Houston-area pastor Melissa Emerson to explore what it means to live faithfully in the midst of deep church change. After stepping into leadership of Mosaic Community Covenant Church following her father's sudden passing, Melissa and her husband have led their community through a nomadic, experimental journey—redefining what church can be in the most diverse suburb in the U.S. With honesty, wisdom, and a heart for justice, Melissa shares what it's been like to shed institutional expectations, rediscover community, and follow the Spirit's leading in uncharted territory. If you've ever felt disillusioned with “church as usual,” or if you're discerning a new way forward, this conversation offers courage and clarity for the road ahead. Melissa Lee Emerson is a third generation Chinese American woman co-pastoring Mosaic Community Covenant Church with her husband. Mosaic meets at a YMCA in the most diverse suburban county in the United States. Passionate about the intersection of faith and justice, Melissa dedicates her energy to the church, to Mosaic Learning Center, and raising her two daughters. She has a masters of divinity from North Park Theological Seminary with an emphasis on intercultural ministry and a bachelors in psychology with an emphasis on sociology and human development. She enjoys multicultural learning spaces and trips, especially if food is involved. Conversation Overview: The shift from institutional church to a nomadic, mission-focused church Creative approaches to discernment Developing missional partnerships Embracing Unlearning Rebuilding culture: resisting performance-driven worship and prioritizing outreach The role of emotional maturity, spiritual formation, and slowing down in adaptive leadership Resources: Mosaic Covenant Community Church Unlikely Nomads: In Search of the New Church by Terry Walling A prophetic and pastoral look at the shifting landscape of the North American Church and how leaders are navigating toward new expressions of faith. Shattered Dreams – a sermon by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A profound reflection on disappointment, surrender, and trusting God's larger purpose through unfulfilled expectations. Acts 1:8 Model A biblical framework used to guide outreach and mission—beginning in one's immediate community (“Jerusalem”) and expanding outward to the world. Dwelling in the Word (Lectio Divina) A contemplative practice of reading Scripture in community with an emphasis on spiritual listening and discernment. One of the central teachings of the New Church is that the Word has a deeper, spiritual meaning. This meaning runs through every story, every phrase, and even every word. This Sunday we'll talk about this deeper spiritual sense, and why it was revealed only hundreds of years after the Word was written, and the role it plays in the establishment of the New Church.
This week we continue with the them of the essentials of the New Church, in other words, the core ideas that define what the New Church actually is. Last week we looked at a unique view of God. This week our focus is on life. In the New Church one of the central teachings is that we must follow the Lord's teachings, and it is only through this that we can receive salvation and eternal life. In the book of Revelation we see images of what it means to truly live what we believe and fight mightily to put it into practice.
What does it mean to engage in spiritual warfare? What does it take to become like one of the angels of Michael and fight for our Lord? These questions are important for us to explore because spiritual life is not always easy or peaceful. There are times when we struggle to follow the Lord and when it takes real effort to treat people the way He commands us to treat them. If we want the New Church to descend into the world then we must prepare the way by engaging in this conflict: before the Holy City can descend, the dragon must be confronted and defeated, and we must each do that as individuals if we want that Holy City to be present in our lives.
Our sermon series for New Church Day is going to be three parts. What's new about the New Church? We're going to look at what's new about an idea of the Lord, what's new about how you live your life, what's new about an understanding of the Lord's Word. The first one about the Lord, which we're going to do this Sunday, is going to be all about the oneness of God. How, when we look at the Lord Jesus Christ, we're seeing the fullness of God. We're seeing the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, all of it together in this one person who we can go to, relate to, have a relationship with, learn from, and worship.
There are a lot of things to consider when you prepare to relocate to a new area of the country or world. This may be exponentially more difficult if you a Baby Boomer or Gen X. Is Your Church Still the Right Soil for Your Family's Faith? The soil you plant your family’s faith in matters more than we often realize. It’s not just about where you go on Sunday—it’s about the spiritual environment shaping your children’s hearts every single week. And sometimes, the signs that something’s off are easy to miss… until it’s almost too late. In this eye-opening episode, Catherine gets real about a question that many Christian parents quietly wrestle with: “How do I know if it’s time to find a new church home?” Drawing from her own family’s deeply personal (and painful) church transition, Catherine walks through six red flags that might mean your current church isn’t cultivating the spiritual growth your family needs. They are: When churches skip parts of the Bible. If whole books or tough topics are off the table, your kids won’t get the full truth they need to stand firm in their faith. When the flesh goes unchallenged.A feel-good message might draw a crowd, but if no one’s being stretched or sanctified, something’s missing. When there’s a disconnect between evangelism and discipleship.Getting people in the door is important—but so is growing deep roots. If your church leans too hard one way, it leaves gaps that can stunt faith. When charisma outweighs character.A church built around a magnetic personality rather than godly integrity can quickly become a breeding ground for spiritual fallout. When the Holy Spirit has no room to move.Programs and polish are fine—but without the Spirit’s power, real transformation doesn’t happen. When the youth group is spiritually flat.If the next generation isn’t fired up for Jesus, it’s time to ask some hard questions about what seeds are (or aren’t) being sown. With honesty, compassion, and hard-won wisdom, she shines a light on issues that are often ignored—but have huge consequences. This isn’t about being picky—it’s about being purposeful. Catherine reminds us that the stakes are high when it comes to our kids’ spiritual formation. The cost of change can be steep, but the fruit of a thriving, Spirit-led church family is worth every step. In this episode, you’ll also learn: Why glossing over hard truths sets kids up for weak faith How to spot signs of spiritual stagnation in your home The warning signs of a numbers-driven, personality-centered church culture What to look for in a youth group that truly disciples your kids Encouragement for parents facing tough church decisions Mentioned Resources: ✨ Catherine’s free Prodigal Bundle: Hope-filled tools, Scripture lists, and encouragement for parents of prodigals → Download it here

With Jesus bringing the new covenant and tearing the veil, a brand-new kind of Church was born. This week, Pastor Jon brings an encouraging message: the Church isn't confined to walls—it's the people. It's growing, it's thriving, and it's alive!
This week, we share a For the Journey exclusive conversation between Bill Haley and Terry Walling, a long-time church leader and author of the recent book, Unlikely Nomads: In Search of the New Church. Terry has observed many committed Christians choosing to step away from familiar forms of church and community out of love for Jesus. Bill and Terry discuss why this trend has only increased since Terry's book came out, and what God might be up to as new forms of Christian community emerge.Explore new forms of Christian Community offered through Coracleinthecoracle.org | @inthecoracleSupport the show

Marriage is an important part of love for many people. And yet the Word has very little to say about it directly! Part of the reason is that people have so many warped ideas of what marriage is or ought to be. When the Word was written, a true explanation would have been rejected. But in the Teachings of the New Church we find that clearer explanation, and at heart, marriage is about friendship. Through cultivating a genuine friendship, a married couple can establish trust, mutual support, and true marriage love.

Salvation is at the heart and soul of Christ's message. But what actually is it? Salvation is meaningless if we do not understand what we are being saved from and how we can achieve that salvation. The New Church teaches that all of us have an inclination towards evil that would destroy us if we weren't protected by the Lord; and that to be truly and fully saved, we need to look to the Lord, reject evil, and live a good life, based on His teachings.

A Catholic bishop, with a social media following second only to the Pope, is proving that dumbing down the faith is the wrong way to reach young adults. Tonight, for our monthly Snoozecast Deluxe bonus episode, we'll read a Snoozecast original story featuring the day in the life of the famous American folkhero Johnny Appleseed. Born Johnathan Chapman, Johnny was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced trees grown with apple seeds (rather than through grafting) to large parts of many states including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Ontario and West Virginia. He became an American legend while still alive, due to his kind, generous ways, his leadership in conservation, and the symbolic importance that he attributed to apples. He was also a missionary for The New Church and the inspiration for many museums and historical sites. The popular image is of Johnny Appleseed spreading apple seeds randomly everywhere he went. In fact, he planted nurseries rather than orchards, built fences around them to protect them from livestock and wildlife, left the nurseries in the care of a neighbor who sold trees on shares, and returned every year or two to tend the nursery. It is said that toward the end of his career he encountered a travelling missionary preaching to an open-air congregation. The sermon was long and severe on the topic of extravagance, because the pioneers were buying such indulgences as calico and imported tea. The preacher repeatedly asked "Where now is there a man who, like the primitive Christians, is traveling to heaven barefooted and clad in coarse raiment?" Finally, Johnny Appleseed walked up to him, put his bare foot on the stump that had served as a pulpit, and said, "Here's your primitive Christian!"
