Is the presence of a qualified elder required in order to plant a new church? Could a group of new believers without an elder identify as a church? While there are many opinions on this topic, listen in as we do our best to look at what the Scriptures teach on this crucial topic.
My friends Daniel Carter and Devan Jensen join us to share the story behind the beautiful new hymn “Long Ago, Within a Garden,” with text by Devan and music by Daniel, written in 1999 and added in February 2026 to Hymns—For Home and Church (no. 1210). Daniel, who worked in the Church Curriculum Department for 27 years before retiring in 2016, opens up about his personal journey. After coming out as gay, he made the decision to resign his membership—not out of anger, but as a step toward healing and “returning to love.” He shares moving insights about his path to self-acceptance, grace, peace, and his deep respect for others. Daniel is now married to his husband, Gale, and continues to express love for his Latter-day Saint roots and community. Devan, an active Latter-day Saint who worked alongside Daniel, reflects on their friendship and creative collaboration. They share their perspectives on the meaningful process of bringing this hymn to life. Elder Gérald Caussé Plays the Piano and Speaks About New Hymn, in Versailles, February 2026 (see show notes). The podcast then shifts as Daniel shares about his decision to resign his membership from the Church—and how that was not out of anger but his path to “heal and return to love.” Daniel shares his love for his Latter-day Saint roots and his community. Daniel talks about his journey to find love, self-acceptance, grace, peace, and respect for others—incredible moving insights. Devan talks about his support for his friend and their work together to create this song. This episode is really twofold: The inspiring story of the creation of a new hymn that will bless many lives Daniel's deeply personal journey toward hope, acceptance, and peace—and their lasting friendship Thank you, Daniel and Devan, for your music, your honesty, and your example of being peacemakers. Have you ever reached a turning point in your life where you've asked the age-old question, ‘What now?' Between last week's heavy news and Ps Paul finishing up at the end of May, I'm sure many in our church community are asking this very question. In the book of Acts, the earliest disciples found themselves in a very similar position: facing a new reality, a new unknown. And as our church goes through this time of transition, we're going to journey with these first disciples as God establishes the early church through them. Join us this Sunday as Ps Sheron kicks off the series and explores how The New Church navigated their own period of transition and what we can learn from them. The post Book of Acts Part 1: The New Church (with Ps Sheron) appeared first on Clayton Church of Christ.

New church plants often begin with vision, faith, and a deep sense of calling—but they also come with real challenges. This devotional reflects on how easy it can be to assume a new church has everything under control, especially when leaders don’t openly ask for help. Over time, good intentions can quietly turn into distance or apathy, even when the need is still very real. The reminder here is simple and important: church planting is never meant to be done alone. God uses many people in different roles—some to plant, some to water—but He alone brings the growth. Even when we don’t know exactly how to get involved, prayer is always a meaningful place to start. Interceding for a church plant, its leaders, and its community is not a passive act; it’s participation in God’s work. This devotional encourages believers to be proactive rather than waiting for an invitation. Support doesn’t always look like finances or formal volunteering. Sometimes it’s faithful prayer, encouragement, or simply staying attentive to what God might be prompting you to do. When we care about what God is building in our communities, we reflect His heart for the Church—and trust Him to bring growth in His timing and His way. Main Takeaways New church plants often need more support than they openly express. God uses many servants, but He alone brings true growth. Prayer is a powerful and practical way to support church leaders and congregations. Believers don’t need to wait for an invitation to care or intercede. God is pleased when we show concern for His work in our local communities. Today’s Bible Verse “What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” - 1 Corinthians 3:5 Your Daily Prayer Here is a brief excerpt from today’s prayer: “Help me not to become apathetic or turn away from those who need it… Only You can truly give it success.” You can listen to the full prayer here or read the devotional at the links below. We all know how important the church is in shaping a kid's faith — it's where foundations are built and seeds of belief take root. But let's be honest: sometimes our kids just aren't excited about going to church. It can start to feel more like a “have to” than a “get to.”In this episode, we sit down with Aaron Collier to talk about practical ways to help kids actually look forward to church. A father of two with over 14 years of experience in kids and camp ministry, Aaron shares wisdom and encouragement to help families make church a place their kids love to be.--Question of the Week: What are some of your favorite parts of going to church?--Hosts: Amy Lowe & Sara JonesGuests: Aaron CollierProducers: Emily Alters & Cody Braun--Learn more about WinShape Camps at WinShapeCamps.org!Instagram: @WinShapeCampsTikTok: @WinShapeCampsFacebook: @WinShapeCamps Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Hello, Today, we have back on one of our favorite guests, Zena Hitz, a philosopher who teaches at St. John's College. We talk about Kimmel's canceling and uncanceling, the history of free speech in a conformist country like America, and the university's place as the crucible for all discourse refereeing. Is this a good thing or is the modern university uniquely unqualified to hold such importance? Enjoy! This is a public episode. Segment 1 • Outrage over pastors not mentioning Charlie Kirk mirrors COVID-era tensions. • Many left churches not over safety policies—but over refusal to address political topics. • The question: Does ignoring key cultural moments mean pastoral failure? Segment 2 • Five filters to think through before leaving: church view, preaching style, theology, shepherding, and courage. • Faithful pastors may not pause expository preaching for politics—and that may be OK. • Slow down: don't make a lifelong church decision based on one Sunday. Segment 3 • Resisting the urge to rage-scroll—this issue needs wisdom, not hot takes. • Phil Johnson reminds us: Don't tear apart the body over one moment. • Instead of bolting, go talk to your pastor face-to-face. Segment 4 • Pastors can address events while keeping Christ central. • Options: comment before/after sermons or hold a separate gathering. • Don't make fast exits—make slow, prayerful decisions rooted in love. ___ Thanks for listening!
