You have probably seen images of the armor of God rendered as the stuff of Arthurian legends, but it seems unlikely that in Ephesians 6:10-18 Paul had this image in mind. Instead, Paul lays out his communal approach to standing strong in the faith using the imagery of Roman soldiers that can help us stand strong to this day.

Paul concludes his letter to the Epheisnas with a warning: Satin is working against us. Many of the things that we experience in life are a direct result of the Devil's efforts. he will attach and oppose us at every turn. God has equpied us with an armor that is sufficient: truth, righteousness, peace, faith the spirit, salvation and prayer. The most overlooked and most important part of our reading is that Paul describes all this armor to allow us to stand. He knew that it would take a lot of endurance and perseverance to stand and succeed. His armor is sufficient against any kind of attack. What divine resources we have been given. There is no excuse for failure because God has given us what we need. In verse 17, Paul tells us to Take the helmet of salvation. Take is a different word in this verse than the one where he said to take the armor of God. In verse 17, take means to receive (as in a gift). The helmet is one of the few pieces of a soldier's equipment that exists to this day. All fighting men have known that protecting the head is critical. Many things about warfare have changed, but the helmet is as important today as it was then. Our heads need protection. The head commands the whole body. An unprotected head (and mind) is open to the attack of the enemy. The devil will attack our minds. He will try to make us forget the goodness of God. He will plant the seeds of discontent. He will work to cloud or judgment of right and wrong. The devil will fight our will to progress and grow. The devil attacks our mind because he recognizes the potential of our minds. If we have a mind to work, we will work. If we have a mind to pray, we will pray. if we have a mind to praise, we will praise. If the devil can obstruct our mind, he can obstruct our relationship with God. If the devil can tie up our mind, he does not have to tie up our bodies. The only ting that can protect our mind is the salvation that God has provided. Everyone needs to receive the protection that salvation provides. When God protects the mind, it is not what we have done, but what God has done for us. Salvation is not dependent upon what I have done, but what HE has done. The devil will try to convince us that we are not saved; that salvation may work for other people, but not us. The helmet of salvation will protect our minds from these lies.

In our text, Paul portrays himself as a soldier dressed appropriately for battle. He indicates that we as Christians, should also prepare for battle. In this brief bit of scripture, Paul paints a full length picture of a soldier prepared for battle. Most of the things mentioned are defensive in nature. They are for the protection of the body so that we can survive the battles of life. His image of the armor is instructive. Bro. Hughes is stirred by what each piece of equipment mentioned is protecting and what spiritual concept Paul tied to the piece of equipment. In verse 15, he talks about having our feet shod with the gospel of peace. The sandals worn by soldiers of the time protected the feet, ankles and legs. They were made of brass and leather and had nails embedded in them for traction during battle. They were designed to protect the legs and feet from the knees down. They were designed to keep the soldier standing and on his feet. The enemy's tactic is to place obstacles in our path to cripple us and cause us to fall. The protection of the feet was essential for the soldier to do battle. Our feet are very important and hold clues to many aspects of human health. So back to Paul, he encourages us to protect our feet with the gospel of peace. How will our feet play into the success or failure in our spiritual journey? The feet represent the foundation that hold the rest of the body. It does not matter what may be in our hearts, of our feet are not capable of taking us there, we will never make it. If we are unprepared in our spiritual foundation, we will be easy prey for the enemy. If our feet are unprepared for battle, we are unprepared for battle. Paul tells us that God has given us the gospel of peace to keep us on our feet and ready to do battle with the enemy. The gospel is what allow us to handle the hard things in life. The gospel is what keeps us standing. When we read God's word we are reminded that God is for us; that God Loves us; that Greater is He that is in me, than what is in the world. It tells that we are love. That we are redeemed. It tells us that we are blood bought. I tells us that we are an overcomer, that we are covered. God's word tells us that we are protected.

We we were born again, we entered into a fellowship and into the possession of an assurance of eternal things. This journey also brings with it a fight. We are in an eternal war with the enemy. God has equipped us to rise to this fight and to be victorious. In our text, Paul identifies himself with the struggle that all of us endure in this battle of life. Paul tells us that the enemy we will fight will come at us from all angles and directions. His comparison of God's gifts to implements of war illustrate just how real the battle is. He begins with a command: Be strong. A command, not a suggestion or an offer. We must above all things be strong for this battle. We must consider all that is in the balance in this battle to fully appreciate how real this is. Failure is not an option. We do not want to be lost. We must not ignore the command. When Paul gives us the command, he is telling us that we can become what the scripture declares that we can become. Paul tells us how to dress for success using the armor of God. Bro. Hughes asks what is that the armor designed to protect. The answer to that explains where the devil will attack. In each of Paul's examples, he cites a piece or armor or a weapon and tells us what area that items is to protect. No matter how long we live for God, we will be vulnerable to the devil in these areas. There are six of items. The first piece is the girding our loins with truth. The first area of attack is our purpose for living. The devil knows that if he can strike at who we are and who God designed us to be, then we are vulnerable to any other attack that he can bring. The devil wants to undermine God's design for our life. If he can do that, we will begin to question God's way and purpose. The armor that is necessary to keep us against this attack, is the girdle of truth. The truth will keep us from becoming tripped up and becoming vulnerable to the enemy. The truth reveals God's purpose for our life. If the devil can get us to question why God made us, he can easily get us to question many other things about our relationship with God.

We are in a war. Not only a war, but a dirty war because the devil fights dirty. He is dirty because he is deceptive. If he would come straight at us, most of us would not have a problem dealing with his assault, but he rarely comes that way. That is why, the bible tells us to put on the full armor of all that God gives us to protect us from the assault. Paul writes to a church that was under assault. He reminds them of how the devil operates with his various devices. In the Greek, the word devices means strategy. Paul deals with a church that was liberal in their interpretation of the gospel. They embraced another gospel other than the one true gospel. Paul said that he was fearful that they did not see what was happening. Paul used the terminology of weddings of the time to illustrate his position. He reminded the church at Corinth that faithfulness was essential to the relationship with God. The only way to build a true relationship is to have faithfulness between the two parties. Paul was fearful that they were being led astray as Satan led Eve astray. We are dealing with a deceitful and cunning foe. He will come at us in a way that will be attractive and compelling. He will use what ever he can use to gain an advantage. Paul tells us that it is Satan's goal to move us from the simplicity that is in Christ. Christ was not simple, but our relationship with Him is. The simplicity of a relationship with Christ stands in contrast with the duplicity and complexity of a relationship with Satan. When we have complexity, we have things moving in different directions. The devil wants to complicate life to the point where we cannot focus on the simplicity of the relationship with Christ. If the devil cannot make us bad, he will make us busy. Paul describes a life that is all on one side of the page. If the page becomes folded, part of life is going a different way. Some of life is hidden. This is just what the devil wants. He wants to disrupt the flow of life by adding burden and distractions. That way we will lose sight of our true priorities.
