This year's STL Jewish Film Festival includes a work of local significance. Two local journalists were part of a project with students from the Epstein Hebrew Academy in University City. It turned into more than they expected. Ellen Futterman (Editor-in-Chief, St. Louis Jewish Light) & Shula Neuman (former Executive Editor at St. Louis Public Radio) join Megan Lynch in-studio to preview the Documentary "Names, Not Numbers". Futterman says these young journalists are likely the 'last generation' who will be able to speak to these survivors.

Today on our episode #393 of All in the Industry®, Shari Bayer has a special show in honor of Naomi Pomeroy, an award-winning chef and restaurateur, who tragically passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024, in a tubing accident in Oregon at age 49. As a tribute, we are sharing Shari's recorded interview with Naomi from June 3, 2022, focusing on her chef advice for Shari's book, Chefwise: Life Lessons from Leading Chefs Around the World (Phaidon, Spring 2023), which Naomi is a contributor to. The New York Times stated that Naomi was a "chef who made Portland a dining destination," and described her as "a self-taught chef with an irreverent streak whose high standards and generosity of spirit made her the culinary matriarch of Portland, Ore." As a Portland-based chef, Naomi's ventures have included Family Supper, Clark Lewis, Gotham Tavern, and Ripe Cooperative. Her time as chef and owner of Portland's beloved gastronomic shrine Beast from 2007 to 2020 made her one of the region's most successful chefs and earned her the 2014 James Beard Award for Best Chef Pacific Northwest. Naomi was selected as one of America's Best New Chefs by Food Wine in 2009, and also appeared on multiple cooking competition shows, including as a contestant on Top Chef Masters and Iron Chef, and as a judge on Top Chef Knife Fight and Bobby's Triple Threat. She published her first book in 2016 entitled Taste and Technique, Recipes to Elevate Your Home Cooking, with Jamie Feldmar. In addition, during the pandemic, Naomi became involved in the Independent Restaurant Coalition (IRC). Shari is grateful for Naomi's friendship and contribution to Chefwise, and to be able to share their conversation today, where they discussed many topics in her book, including leadership, business, team, work-life balance, and fundamentals. Our sincerest condolences to Naomi's family, friends and team. Naomi, you will be greatly missed. #RIP Today's show also features Shari's PR tip to say yes, inspired by Naomi; and Solo Dining experience from 2016 at Beast in Portland, Oregon. **Check out Shari's book, Chefwise: Life Lessons from Leading Chefs Around the World (Phaidon) #chefwisebook Photo Courtesy of Dina Avila.Listen at Heritage Radio Network; subscribe/rate/review our show at iTunes, Stitcher or Spotify. Today on our episode #389 of All in the Industry®, Shari Bayer has a special show in honor of James Kent, also known as Jamal James Kent, an incredible chef, restaurateur, husband, father, and friend, who suddenly passed away this past weekend from a heart attack at the young age of 45. The New York Times wrote that James was “a distinguished chef and successful Manhattan restaurateur who seemed poised to become a food industry tycoon.” He was an extremely well-respected leader, and had already accomplished so much in our industry, and simply put, he was loved. As a tribute, we are rebroadcasting our episode #253 with James, which originally aired on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2020, when Shari spoke with him remotely during the trying times of Covid. James' company, Saga Hospitality Group, includes restaurants, Crown Shy (one Michelin star) and Saga (two Michelin stars), and cocktail bar, Overstory (No. 3 on North America's 50 Best Bars list), which are all in the same building in Manhattan's Financial District at 70 Pine Street. Crown Shy is on the ground floor, and Saga and Overstory are part of the 62nd, 63rd, 64th and 66th floors, along with private dining room, 12 terraces and 360 panoramic views. James future plans included Snackville, re-imagined culinary concepts at the amusement park on Santa Monica Pier in California as a partnership with Saga Hospitality Group and private equity platform, S C Holdings; several projects from fine dining to a fast-casual chicken sandwich concept with NBA great LeBron James, whose investment firm is LRMR Ventures; a 140-seat restaurant at 360 Park Avenue South in Manhattan, inspired by the Grand Central Oyster Bar with Executive Chef Danny Garcia, who was just named winner of Top Chef: Season 21; a new bakery and casual all-day cafe in the newly renovated Domino Sugar factory building in Brooklyn with Executive Pastry Chef Renata Ameni; and five restaurants in partnership with Paris luxury department store, Printemps, at 1 Wall Street, led by Culinary Director Gregory Gourdet. James was also working with Shari's publisher Phaidon on a new book to tell the story of his restaurants at 70 Pine and his life growing up and cooking in NYC. Shari is proud to have called James a friend. Our deepest condolences to James' wife Kelly Kent and their children Gavin and Avery, and everyone who loved James too. Thank you, James, for sharing your story with us, and always making Shari feel special. She will greatly miss you. #RIP ** On episode #253 of All in the Industry®, Shari Bayer is joined by James Kent, Executive Chef of Crown Shy, and the Owner/Partner of J2K Creative. A Greenwich Village native, James started his culinary career as a summer apprentice at Bouley when he was fifteen years old, and has since spent time in the kitchens of Babbo, Jean-Georges, and Gordon Ramsay. James joined the team at Eleven Madison Park (EMP) as a line cook and was quickly promoted to sous chef, and in 2010, he placed first in the Bocuse d'Or USA Competition; then representing the US at the international finals of the Bocuse D'Or in Lyon, France, placing 10th in the world. When he returned to New York, he was named chef de cuisine of EMP, and under his leadership, the restaurant received numerous accolades including four stars from The New York Times, three Michelin stars, and a coveted spot on World's 50 Best Restaurants. James was promoted to Executive Chef of The NoMad in the fall of 2013, the same year that it received one Michelin Star. In 2017, he left to pursue his first solo project, an ambitious pair of restaurants in the landmark Art Deco building at 70 Pine Street in New York's Financial District, with his partner Jeff Katz. Crown Shy, the first of those restaurants, opened in March 2019, and received 2 stars from The New York Times and one Michelin Star just six months after opening. Today's show also features Shari's PR tip to strive for excellence; Industry News discussion, including COVID-19; and Solo Dining/Takeout experience from Einat Admony's Taim in the West Village, NYC. Stay safe and well. ** ** Check out Shari's book, Chefwise: Life Lessons from Leading Chefs Around the World (Phaidon). #chefwisebook ** Photo Courtesy of Saga Hospitality Group. Joshua 4: 1-3, 8-9, 19-24When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Take twelve men from the people, from each tribe a man, and command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests' feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.'”And the people of Israel did just as Joshua commanded and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, just as the Lord told Joshua. And they carried them over with them to the place where they lodged and laid them down there. And Joshua set up twelve stones…and they are there to this day.The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they encamped at Gilgal on the east border of Jericho. And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. And he said to the people of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?' then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.' For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.Sermon Questions:Everyone share a memorial stone story

In this special Thanksgiving episode, Jeff Zaugg shares powerful stories of God's faithfulness to the DadAwesome community and ministry. From global impact to huge fundraising milestones and everything in between, Jeff focuses on gratitude and remembrance for all God has done in recent years. Plus, he shares the exciting vision for the next phase of DadAwesome. Key Takeaways When you lean into remembrance of what God has done, it goes beyond your family to all the world. (Joshua 4) 10 areas of massive gratitude Reflecting on 6 years of impact Entering the next phase of DadAwesome Your invitation to support DadAwesome in two ways Jeff Zaugg Jeff Zaugg is a loving husband, intentional dad, and passionate advocate for the fatherless. With experience in nonprofit leadership and pastoring, Jeff founded DadAwesome in 2018 and Fathers for the Fatherless shortly thereafter. Jeff and his wife, Michelle, have been married for seventeen years and are parents to four daughters, ages two through nine. Key Quotes 4:47 - "Then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord. And when it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones shall be to your people, to the people of Israel, a memorial forever. This is the set up, get the stones you're going to walk, you're experiencing a miracle, but get the stones so that your kids, when they ask, what do these stones mean to you?" 6:14 - "Our kids are going to ask us, we can answer them, but we can, like the Stones, the moment of giving thanks and remembrance, actually, it went beyond just the Jordan, that God expanded into. And they can remember that God did that same miracle 40 years earlier with the Red Sea. It's not just our kids, but it's all people of the world. So when we as dads live into remembrance and gratitude and telling stories and organizing moments for our kids to to see, look what God has done, it goes beyond our family to all the peoples of the world, that they will see and know that God is mighty and He takes care [of us]." Hello everyone. August 10, 1908 is the birthday of the late bandleader Claude Thornhill. It has been awhile since I have played some of the great recordings made by the Thornhill orchestra, so to remember Claude on his birthday here is a show I produced about ten years ago remembering Claude on his birthday. I had never heard of Claude when a fellow Big Band lover asked me if I had ever listened to his music. I obtained a couple of his lp's (lp stood for long playing back then) and really enjoyed what I heard. To celebrate his birthday we'll revisit some of that great music. I hope you enjoy it as well as learning a little bit about this great musician. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com
