Jim Highsmith has been thinking about decision-making for a long time. When he wrote Agile Project Management in 2004, he went looking for practical guidance on decision-making in the project management literature and found very little. That gap matters even more now.In this episode, Jim and I talk about why AI raises the stakes for executive judgment. AI can remove friction, speed up work, and take on repeatable tasks, but it can also make it easier for leaders to stop practicing the very capabilities they are paid to use. Jim brings this to life through John Boyd's OODA loop, the risk of judgment atrophy, mountaineering decisions, Rob Hall's Everest threshold, Phil Knight's pattern recognition at Nike, and a personal story from Jim's own time leading a collaborative project team at Nike. This conversation is really about how leaders build judgment deliberately: by making consequence-bearing decisions, setting thresholds before pressure arrives, creating space for slow thinking, and reflecting honestly on how decisions were made.Key TakeawaysAI can weaken judgment when leaders stop practicing it: Jim compares the risk to driving an autonomous car: the more the system takes over, the less sharp the driver becomes. AI can remove low-value effort, but leaders still need to practice making consequence-bearing decisions. The OODA loop is mostly about orientation: Jim explains that John Boyd's edge was not just speed, but his ability to update his mental model quickly. For leaders, the real work is noticing when old assumptions no longer fit the situation.Capability is knowledge plus experience plus judgment: AI can make knowledge easier to access, but it cannot replace the experience of carrying consequences. Judgment develops when people make real decisions, reflect on the outcome, and adjust how they think.Thresholds only work when enforced under pressure: Jim uses Rob Hall's Everest story to show why decision thresholds matter before emotion, ambition, or sunk cost take over. In business, those thresholds might be cost, risk, customer impact, or reversibility.Leaders need to separate fast decisions from slow judgment: Some repeatable, data-heavy decisions can be automated with guardrails. Higher-context decisions still need human orientation, pattern matching, and time to think.Reflection turns experience into better pattern matching: Barry shares his practice of documenting decisions, what was known at the time, and why the call was made. That kind of review helps leaders improve the decision process, not just judge the outcome.Additional InsightsRole modeling beats mandates: Jim describes how Boyd taught by showing the mechanics of his performance. Barry connects this to AI adoption: leaders create more movement by sharing how they are using the tools in real work.Productivity fatigue is a real AI-era risk: Barry reflects on how AI can increase output while shrinking the space to think. That matters because senior leadership work often depends on judgment, not just throughput.AI transformation is still a people problem: Jim returns to Jerry Weinberg's reminder that “no matter what they tell you, it's a people problem.” Tools help, but organizations still need to redesign the work, behaviors, and decisions around them.Pattern matching is different from gut feel: Jim uses Phil Knight's Nike decisions to show how instinct can come from years of context. What looks intuitive on the surface is often pattern recognition built through experience.Episode Highlights00:00 – Episode Recap – Jim Highsmith frames the core tension of the episode: AI can accelerate work, but it can also expose whether leaders have a real decision-making system or are quietly handing judgment to the machine.01:45 – Guest Introduction – Barry introduces Jim Highsmith, a pioneer of adaptive leadership and original Agile Manifesto signatory whose work has shaped how organizations navigate uncertainty and make high-stakes decisions. (Jim Highsmith)04:27 – Decision-Making Was Missing from the Playbook – Jim explains that when he wrote his first Agile Project Management book in 2004, he found surprisingly little practical guidance on decision-making in standard project management sources.05:47 – The Real Power of the OODA Loop – Jim revisits John Boyd's observe, orient, decide, act model and argues that orientation, the ability to update mental models under pressure, is the part leaders often underdevelop.07:19 – From Process-Centric to Judgment-Centric Management – Jim makes the case that if AI takes over more process improvement work, organizations need decision-making capacity distributed through the system, not concentrated at the top.09:14 – The Judgment Muscle Can Atrophy – Barry and Jim use the autonomous car example to show how useful automation can quietly weaken a capability when people stop practicing it.12:33 – Role Modeling Beats Mandates – Jim explains how Boyd taught fighter pilots by showing the mechanics of superior performance, which Barry connects to leaders demonstrating their own AI experiments instead of simply telling others what to do.15:50 – Capability Is More Than Knowledge – Jim defines capability as knowledge plus experience plus judgment, pointing out that LLMs can provide knowledge but not the consequence-bearing experience that shapes better calls.18:56 – Thresholds Keep Decisions Honest – Jim shares the Rob Hall Everest story to show why thresholds only matter if leaders are willing to honor them when pressure, ambition, or sunk cost pushes the other way.20:58 – Automate the Right Decisions – Jim distinguishes fast, data-dependent System One decisions from slower System Two judgments, giving leaders a practical way to decide what to automate and what to protect.24:31 – From Search Engine to Human-Agent Teams – Jim describes his own progression from using AI as a search engine to working daily with multiple humans and agents, showing that the practice evolves through use.27:06 – Productivity Fatigue and Constant Execution – Barry reflects on how AI can create more throughput while leaving less space for slow thinking, especially for leaders whose real value is making judgment calls.31:05 – Relearning the People Problem – Jim returns to Jerry Weinberg's reminder that “no matter what they tell you, it's a people problem,” and Barry connects that to companies buying AI tools without redesigning how people work.33:21 – Pattern Matching Is Not Gut Feel – Jim uses Phil Knight's early Nike decisions to explain why seasoned executives often seem intuitive because they have built patterns from industry knowledge, relationships, and lived context.36:09 – Decision Journaling Builds Better Judgment – Barry describes documenting decisions, the information available, and the rationale at the time as a way to learn from both strong and weak outcomes.37:22 – A Nike Lesson in Collaborative Judgment – Jim recalls a project decision at Nike where the team agreed with the outcome but challenged the process, giving him a lasting lesson about when people need to be part of the call.38:51 – Closing Reflections – Barry thanks Jim and points listeners toward his writing as these long-standing ideas about judgment, adaptability, and decision-making become even more relevant in the AI era.Useful ResourcesJim Highsmith's website – Jim's home base for his bio, books, articles, podcasts, and current work. In this episode of the Story Engine Podcast, I sit down with Jonathan Greye from personalbrand.com to explore what branding really means—and why most people are getting it completely wrong. We go far beyond logos, fonts, and color palettes to uncover the deeper "engine of the story" that drives everything: your identity, your lived experiences, and the essence of who you are. Jonathan shares how true branding is about mirror work—reflecting your full story back to you so clearly that it transforms not just your messaging, but your offers, your team alignment, and the way your entire business operates. What struck me most is how this process doesn't just create a brand—it creates freedom. When your brand is rooted in your true essence, you stop rebuilding your website every year, stop chasing trends, and start building something timeless that evolves with you. Jonathan also opens up about the pivotal moment that pushed him to leave agency life behind and build a business where creativity, alignment, and impact finally came together. If you've ever felt boxed in, scattered, or disconnected from your own brand, this conversation will completely reframe how you see your business. 01:09 – The "Engine of the Story" Explained Jonathan shares how storytelling across copy, visuals, and design creates a multi-sensory brand experience. 03:42 – What a Brand Manifesto Actually Does We break down how a manifesto draws a line in the sand, attracts the right people, and repels the wrong ones. 05:09 – Where Most Branding Agencies Get It Wrong Why focusing only on content or niching can limit growth—and how true brand DNA creates long-term flexibility. 07:42 – The Costly Trap of Constant Rebranding I share the common cycle of rebuilding websites and chasing trends—and why it never works long term. 08:38 – Mirror Work: Seeing Yourself Clearly for the First Time Jonathan defines mirror work and explains how embracing your full story becomes your true differentiation. 10:25 – How Your Brand Shapes Your Offers and Business Model We explore how understanding your essence influences not just messaging—but how you structure your entire business. 12:04 – The "Frankenstein Brand" Problem Jonathan describes how many entrepreneurs piece together scattered strategies that never fully align. 15:06 – Branding That Creates Cultural Impact How great brands go beyond marketing and begin to shape movements and communities. 17:08 – The Breaking Point: Creative Director Burnout Jonathan shares the moment he realized his dream job wasn't what he thought it would be. 18:12 – The Dali Museum Project That Changed Everything A powerful story of creative rejection that led to a complete shift in his career path. 20:02 – The First Aligned Client Experience The moment Jonathan realized he was finally doing the work he was meant to do. 21:39 – "I Finally Felt Seen" How a client's reaction validated his new approach to branding and set the foundation for his business. 26:08 – From Rejection to Reinvention (Story Breakdown) I reflect Jonathan's journey back to him, connecting the dots into a powerful, transformational narrative. 28:58 – Where to Learn More How to connect with Jonathan and explore working with his team at personalbrand.com.
Most of think of a broom as a tool of cleaning up our homes or our churches. Certainly the Pharisees and scribes would like to use a broom to sweep away the people with whom Jesus was keeping company. So Jesus told them three parables. Let's look at the first two and discover how Jesus uses a broom.
You may be like the many business owners I speak to who haven't considered how their business will fuel their retirement. "It's too far off". Along with income tax and death there are two other absolute truths about life: 1️⃣You'll need more money than you think to live a comfortable retirement. 2️⃣ If you don't build that fund nobody else will (especially the government) So we're going to discuss this very real issue with Christian Mather, an expert in the field. Together, we'll explore: - ✅ Why many recruitment founders build successful agencies yet remain financially dependent upon them. ✅ The gap between business performance and genuine financial freedom. ✅ The key "walk away" number every founder should know and how to calculate it. ✅ Why relying on a future exit alone can limit your options and how to build flexibility alongside it. ✅ An alternative way of becoming wealthy without having to sell your business. This is going to be a very practical session giving founders something they can act upon. What it isn't is the usual financial advice – you don't need that now. This is for you if you like to be ahead of the game when it comes to your financial freedom.

In Ask Away #34, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe tackles profound and sometimes challenging questions with clarity, warmth, and deep Torah insight. The episode begins with a clear explanation of the 613 Mitzvos, the 365 prohibitions, and the 7 Noahide laws, emphasizing that we should treat every commandment as if it were the most important. He then explores the deeper purpose of the Temple — not only an external structure but a call for us to elevate ourselves through real-life struggle and growth, rather than remaining in isolated holiness.Rabbi Wolbe addresses the complexities of Shalom Bayit in interfaith marriages, the beauty of learning to speak each other's “language” in marriage, and offers a heartfelt defense of Chassidic customs while highlighting the extraordinary Chesed (kindness) of the Chassidic community (Hatzalah, Bikur Cholim, etc.). He responds thoughtfully to a difficult contemporary question about enemies and chastisement, reminding listeners that the ultimate solution lies in our own Teshuvah and closeness to Hashem. The session closes with inspiration on the centrality of Torah study throughout Jewish history and the incredible resources available today. As always, Rabbi Wolbe blends practical halacha, historical perspective, personal stories, and motivational guidance, leaving listeners empowered to grow in their relationship with Hashem. Please submit your questions at askaway@torchweb.org_____________The Everyday Judaism Podcast is dedicated to learning, understanding and appreciating the greatness of Jewish heritage and the Torah through the simplified, concise study of Halacha, Jewish Law, thereby enhancing our understanding of how Hashem wants us to live our daily lives in a Jewish way._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Marshall & Doreen LernerDownload & Print the Everyday Judaism Halacha Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RL-PideM42B_LFn6pbrk8MMU5-zqlLG5This episode of the Everyday Judaism Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Marshall & Doreen Lerner! It is one of the most important questions in the field right now, and one of the hardest to answer. Public health professionals know the work inside and out, but translating it for friends, neighbors, and policymakers? That is where many of us get stuck. In this episode, Dr. Huntley is joined by two leaders from Sisters in Public Health, a national organization advancing women in the public health field. Together, they explore one of the most pressing challenges of this moment: how do we explain public health in plain language, and why does it matter so much right now? The conversation is grounded, practical, and genuinely energizing. Today, Dr. Killeen reflects on a simple idea from Lao Tzu that carries real weight in leadership. While it is easy to focus on directing others, true growth comes from learning to manage your own reactions, habits, and mindset. Challenges show up daily and in dentistry. The schedules shift, patients get frustrated, and systems break down. The way you respond in those moments sets the tone for your team far more than any instruction you give. Self control is the foundation of strong leadership. When you lead yourself well, your team often follows naturally.
What if everything you've been taught about power is wrong? In this episode, Jen Bugajsky unpacks the deep-rooted beliefs many of us carry about power shaped by authority, control, and past experience and reveals a radically different truth. Through personal stories and real-life examples, she explores the difference between force (control, pressure, and pushing) and true power (alignment, flow, and trust). This conversation invites you to redefine what power means in your body and your life so you can stop forcing outcomes and start allowing a deeper, more authentic strength to move through you.If you've ever felt afraid of your own power… or unsure how to access it without becoming controlling this episode will shift everything.

It is such a wild time to be in the world of training and development, isn't it? I've had this persistent hunch—call it a "zag" when everyone else is "zigging"—that as much as we're obsessing over AI, the real secret sauce is still our human intuition . I recently sat down with Anthony Salcito from Coursera, and it turns out my hypothesis wasn't just wishful thinking. We've all seen those robotic AI outputs that sound like they've never actually lived a day in their lives, and while I've certainly fumbled through my share of prompt engineering, the data shows that our soft skills are more critical than ever . We're navigating a world where we have more data than we know what to do with, and the magic happens when we decide how to use that information to lead with empathy and culture . Key Conversation Themes The Symbiotic Rise of AI and Human Agency. While technical enrollments are skyrocketing, they are being matched by a demand for leadership and critical thinking to ensure these tools are used ethically and effectively . "Humanity will always become more valuable when the technology is more pervasive or used in a sort of a paradigm-shifting way, like what's happening with AI." The Critical Need for Discerning Truth In an era of deepfakes and advanced data models, a core human talent is the ability to separate reality from generated content and prioritize what truly matters for an organization . "Discerning reality from what is created by Gen AI is certainly a core talent... that's really where that human is super critical." Cultivating an Entrepreneurial Mindset Internally. Organizations are looking for intrapreneurs—people who use AI tools to think bigger and pivot quickly without being constrained by historical technological limits . "You want an entrepreneurial mindset to exist inside of learners in an organization that think differently about using these tools." AI as a Safe Space for Human Growth. One of the most exciting applications is using AI for role-playing, allowing employees to practice difficult conversations and gain confidence without the fear of being judged by a peer . "It's hard to roleplay with a human, because you're worried about being judged... I can see it being much safer to do with a robot." Actionable Takeaway Audit your AI prompts for Human Activation. The next time you use a generative tool, don't just accept the first output. Apply your unique lived experience to pivot the prompt, asking the tool to provide a multi-perspective view or a specific organizational culture lens to ensure the result has the humanity required to drive real business change . Iurie Roșca discusses the deceptive nature of modern geopolitics, arguing that both East and West are controlled by the same globalist interests, suggesting that the apparent conflict between them is a distraction. He specifically critiques the multipolarity movement, claiming that entities like the Eurasian Union are merely carbon copies of the European Union’s technocratic model. The conversation highlights how alternative media figures and intellectuals are often co-opted or funded by these power centers to promote specific narratives. Roșca describes his personal experience with state censorship, legal persecution, and “civic death” resulting from his refusal to align with either side. Ultimately, he emphasizes the necessity of Christian spiritual resistance against what Roșca identifies as an encroaching digital tyranny. Send a textIn this episode of Marketing Espresso, I'm joined again by the brilliant and completely addictive-to-talk-to Quinn Palmer. This conversation picks up right where we left off, diving deeper into a shift we're both seeing across Australia and beyond: people are craving real human connection again. After years of tech reliance, remote everything and a pandemic that had most of us glued to our phones while drinking wine on a Tuesday, something has changed.Quinn describes it as history repeating itself. After every major rise in technology, we eventually swing back to wanting to be around actual humans. And we're seeing it everywhere — sold out in-person events, social clubs popping up, dating events overflowing, run clubs thriving and communities rebuilding themselves from the ground up. It's a movement, and for marketers, it's a sign.Networking is no longer the old-school corporate handshake or a race to collect business cards. It's becoming friend-making, connection-building and community-led growth. Quinn talks about how much more powerful networking becomes when you stop approaching it with an agenda and start showing up like a human being. Because the truth is, people buy from people. If you want real brand loyalty and trust, there's nothing more effective than genuine conversations. We discuss why the old KPI-driven, transactional networking style doesn't work anymore, and how approaching events with curiosity — not desperation — completely changes your outcomes. Quinn also shares stories about relationships that turned into opportunities years later, reminding us that the impact of networking isn't always instant. Sometimes it's three months later. Sometimes it's three years. And sometimes, it's simply the ripple effect of being someone memorable to talk to.The biggest theme that shows up again and again in this chat is that networking sits at the very foundation of your entire marketing ecosystem. It's not an optional extra. It's not a “nice to have”. It's where brand reputation, partnerships, referrals and long-term trust are built. As Quinn says beautifully, if marketing is about people, then you need to actually start with the people.DOWNLOAD MY CONTENT PLANNER - https://becchappell.com.au/content-planner/Instagram @bec_chappellLinkedIn – Bec Chappell If you're ready to work together, I'm ready to work with you and your team. How to work with me:1. The power of God is not accessed through religious performance, but through relationship with Christ—and when that relationship is real, it produces visible and costly transformation. Jesus declared that his disciples would be his witnesses “to the ends of the earth.” Early Christians lived out this proclamation in powerful and palpable ways. Today we struggle to witness to those close to us, let alone to those at the ends of the earth. This series offers a glimpse into ways early Christians witnessed. Impacted? In the week when President Donald Trump vowed to implement a wave of increasing tariffs on European allies until the United States is allowed to buy Greenland, Yanis Varoufakis and Wolfgang Munchau dissect the terminal decline of European sovereignty and the shifting pillars of the global economy. Is Europe unable to confront Trump due to its total reliance on American technology and defence? And while the U.S. and China embrace disruptive economic models to maintain their dominance, why does the EU choose to preserve a failing status quo rather than pursuing the radical political union necessary for survival? What I have learned over the course of my life is this:When you push beneath the surface—beneath the pain, the losses, the disappointments, the anger—what you avoiddoesn't disappear. It amplifies. It shows up as exhaustion, numbness, overworking, or the quiet escape into distractions that keep you away from yourtrue authenticity and vulnerability.Life happens.Emotions like anger, grievance, and shame are signals most of us were never taught to listen to. They are uncomfortable. They ask something of us. And so we turn away. I know this terrain intimately.About twenty years ago, I found myself on the edge of burnout. I had poured myself into work as a way of not feeling—of not having to sit with grief, disappointment, and unresolved loss and pain. From the outside I wasfunctioning. Inside, I was emptying out. What saved me was not another strategy—but a pause.I felt a deep call to step into a quiet space of reflection, and that call led me to the Camino de Santiago. Walking day after day, with nothing to distract me from my inner life, I discovered something essential:The way forward is not around the pain, but through it.Walking through the darkness.Stepping into the fire.Staying present when everything is in denial and rebellion, wanting to turn away.If you find yourself in an in-between moment—startingthis year longing for deeper purpose, real connection, honesty with yourself, and the support of consistency and accountability—I invite you to join me.Reserve Your Spot Today. WelcomeHello, lovelies. It's Juliette here, and today I'm joined by the unapologetically real Cassie Howard. We speak about staying with yourself, authenticity without performance, and the power of being called out with love. We touch polarity, mentorship, and what happens when you stop pretending in spaces that reward sameness. This is about holding your ground and letting success and intimacy meet the real you.Let yourself feel what lands as you listen.Episode Summary In this episode, Cassie and I speak about staying with yourself when being real costs approval, authenticity without masks, the subtle ways self abandonment shows up in business and mentorship, and the moment you choose truth over being liked, touching on polarity, nervous system safety, energetic sovereignty, and the power that returns when you stop managing yourself and let yourself be known, an invitation back to your center, your lived truth, and the part of you that refuses to perform.Key Takeaways Staying Rooted Changes EverythingThe moment you stop bending to be chosen, your system settles. Love, work, and intimacy no longer pull you off course.Authenticity Is Felt, Not FramedIt isn't a character or a tone of voice. It's the signal you live from. Others sense it immediately.Grief Has IntelligenceWhen you let it move without explanation or self management, the body recalibrates around what's true.Self Abandonment Rarely ShoutsIt whispers through politeness, restraint, and the habit of making yourself easier to hold.Safety Emerges From PresenceNot from control or technique, but from staying honest when the edge appears.Your Center Is Where Power WaitsWhen you return there, instead of reaching outward, life meets you without demand.Resources and Links
Jon Herold and Burning Bright spend Episode 423 dismantling the growing confusion around Venezuela, Iran, and what actually constitutes regime change versus narrative theater. The conversation breaks down why recent actions involving Maduro do not fit historical definitions of regime replacement, how media framing is intentionally misleading, and why silence and ambiguity are being used as strategic tools. From there, the discussion expands into Iran, critical minerals, silver, and economic pressure points, tying financial signals to geopolitical leverage rather than isolated events. The hosts also examine domestic instability narratives, including Minnesota unrest, and how foreign and domestic pressure campaigns mirror one another. Throughout the episode, Jon and Burning Bright emphasize pattern recognition, patience, and the danger of forcing conclusions before operational clarity emerges, arguing that many are mistaking surface noise for substance while missing the deeper shifts already underway.

Jill is back in the co-host seat this week for a topic-packed episode. Tom opens the show asking if $61,000 seems like a lot for a Hyundai—any Hyundai. The hosts discuss the Korean maker's luxury/value equation, and note that Tom's test car, a 2026 Palisade Calligraphy Hybrid is, without question, a luxury vehicle. Listen in for more of the conversation. Tom goes on to share his frustration with Stellantis for killing all of Jeep's “4Xe” plug-in hybrids, along with the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Listen in for some crankiness. Still in the first segment, Jill details her CES Chinese-car adventure. Jill was able to take short drives in a number of luxury electric Zeekr models (a division of Volvo's parent company Geely) and came away very impressed. Her quick takes on these vehicles are worth a listen. Are these premium EVs coming to the U.S? here's the scoop. In the second segment, Jill and Tom are joined by friend of show and sustainability expert Robert Collangelo. Robert addresses the fallacy that EVs are a threat to the U.S. electric grid, and details the real power-consumption challenges that lay ahead for the country. It's a great conversation you don't want to miss. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Is it a Dodge?” quiz.
Prayer is harder than scrolling headlines—and that's exactly why it matters. Jesus didn't run on hype or people-pleasing. He ran on prayer. He didn't pray because He lacked power; He prayed because prayer was the foundation of His power. And He invites us to ask boldly, seek intentionally, and knock persistently. There are things God may only do if you ask. Recorded live at Crossroads Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.
