How do you prepare for Christmas? Is it a focus on the presents and all of the activities? Or do you prepare your heart to receive His comfort, to behold His glory? To be filled with His joy so that you sing of Him on the mountain tops?

God did the unthinkable by squeezing himself into a human body, especially that of a tiny baby, but his great love and perfect plan made the impossible possible. We can know God and see his glory by knowing Jesus as God’s only Son.

In our message today, we'll see the deeper meaning behind the incarnation of Christ and how His coming dramatically pushes against the Bad Religious tendencies that humans have.
December is a month of celebration of the birth of Jesus. For most of the world, Christmas is a time of gifts and sharing. We give to friends and family, and we give to charities, the church, and families in need. Gift-giving can come with decisions and anxiety about getting the perfect gift for someone. Will they like it, do they have one, will they return it the next day? Sometimes we receive gifts that disappoint us. However, the gift celebrated by the Christmas story is perfect and goes far beyond the feel-good emotions of the moment. To understand the writing of John, we must understand the perspective of when he wrote his books. Most historians agree that John’s writing came some seventy years after the crucifixion and resurrection. He was writing to a church composed chiefly of Greeks and Gentiles. Matthew, Mark, and Luke’s audience understood Jewish history and culture, but John had to connect with a church that had no concept of the Messiah and Jewish culture. He begins his writing with the idea that both Jew and Gentile could comprehend: The Word. That word that became flesh is the greatest gift that humanity could receive.

Why is the incarnation such a big deal?
There are many people in the world who see doctrine simply as a divisive activity. They see that creeds and dogma as the very things that have sown discord amongst the people of God, and that for the sake of unity, we must discard it. Some, perhaps with greater humility and less extravagance, desire to avoid doctrine because it turns people off, and is difficult. Yet, doctrine is necessary and, against much of what popular preaching states, immensely practical. Today, we have the great pleasure of looking at the nature of Christ himself: how the Word became Flesh.
