Homestart Butser and its 80 volunteers supported 263 families and 365 people in the last year. They raise all their own funds. For one week only - from 3 to 10 December - every pound donated to them that week is doubled by another organisation. Put the date in the diary; whatever you donate that week (and that week only) is doubled - making your generosity even more valuable to them. Homestart's Nicola Winter spoke to Mike Waddington about the Big Give Challenge and their work across Petersfield and surrounding areas, to give families facing difficulties practical help. How do you feel about God's plan for the future—scared, excited, indifferent? However you feel about it, we can't ignore it. This future hope that God has given is meant to revolutionize how we live in the present.

As we continue with our Big Give series, we look at how Mary received the news delivered to her by an angel. Through Mary, we receive God's big gift of himself and we are called to give the same to others.

When Gabriel announced Jesus' birth to Mary, he addressed her as “favored one.” What God does for Mary is a small taste of what he does for the entire world through Jesus. In this sermon we look at how God's favor impacts Mary, because that same favor is available to everyone who believes in Jesus.

What's your biggest financial fear? According to the author of Hebrews, that fear will keep you from doing what God wants you to do with your money. The answer is simple yet profound: God is our helper.

God is a giver. In this first week of our Big Give teaching series, we look at God's first gift—life itself. What kind of life has God given us? What response is required of us?
This week I talk to Minke Van Til who works for an all-female charity, Ella's. Minke and the team at Ellas work with traumatised and marginalised survivors of trafficking and exploitation, as well as their dependent children. Many of the women have been abused from a young age. Nearly half are refugees or asylum seekers. Most have complex mental health needs. They face many barriers to accessing the support they need to recover and build lives that are safe and free for themselves and their children. Without vital support from Ella's, many of these families could fall back into danger. Ella's does everything it can to ensure survivors of trafficking and exploitation have all they need to recover and build lives that are safe and free. Their new Children and Families Caseworker will support survivors who are mums as they raise children while themselves recovering from the trauma they've been through. The caseworker will also provide direct support for children, as well as organise parents and family activities and referrals to other services. This Christmas if you have a spare £1, £5, £10, £20, £50, £100 or £500 please consider donating to support the work of Ella's and it you donate before Tuesday the funding will be doubled as part of the Big Give campaign. Links below ! And if you are listening after Christmas you can still contribute to their insanely meaningful work. Minke is definitely a Miracle Working Mum / wonderwerkende moeder https://www.ellas.org.uk/ https://donate.biggive.org/campaign/a056900002RXsnJAAT

This summer, in a major new exhibition, you can see how documenting the animal world has resulted in some of humankind's most awe-inspiring art, science and sound recordings: Animals: Art, Science and Sound is now open at the British LibraryPart of the exhibition is dedicated to darkness and Steve got to have a preview of what's on show a couple of days before the exhibition opened. In this interview with Cheryl Tipp, curator of Wildlife and Environmental Sounds, Steve discovers what can be heard in the exhibit as well as what bat recordings lie in the archive. Hear the recordings of horseshoe bats made on one of the first commercially available bat detectors; the Holgate Mk VI and you can see this detector within the exhibition along with photographs of the waveforms it could make from recordings. It sits alongside other important works such as Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur (Artforms in nature) with the plate of bats on display. Cheryl also explains how you can submit your bat recordings to the library for adding to the archive. The exhibition is open until Monday 28th Aug 2023. Tickets and all the information you need can be found on the Animals: Art, Science and Sound website.Follow Cheryl Tipp on twitter.Discover more about John Hooper on page 13 of this journal.Listen to the Holgate recordings of greater horseshoes again on the British Library archive page as well as Cheryl's recording of common pipistrelles. We've been selected by the Big Give for this year's Green Match Fund; every donation we receive up to £5000 will be doubled. Mike was just seven years old when he lost his father to kidney disease, and many years later he learned that he was at an advanced stage of the inherited condition called polycystic kidney disease (PKD), and his kidneys were slowly failing. 2019 was a very challenging year and Mike experienced multiple medical issues. He knew he needed a transplant, and that the waitlist was long and with no guarantees. Mike started researching how to go about receiving a kidney from a living donor, and he came across resources from “The Big Ask, The Big Give,” a program of The National Kidney Foundation. Asking for a kidney can be awkward, and using social media is a whole different world for someone who never used Facebook, so Mike needed a champion. In this episode he shares how before he asked for a kidney, he had to ask for help, and navigate the pandemic at the same time. Meanwhile, Mike's niece Andrea had never thought very much about donating an organ until she heard Uncle Mike's story. In the second part of this episode, Andrea shares with us how she came to the realization that she could do something significant to help. She also discusses how gifting a kidney has opened up a new and unexpected richness in her life, including her involvement with Kidney Donor Athletes, and a recent trip to Mount Kilimanjaro. Excerpts “I'm not very media savvy, let's put it that way. I don't do any social things on the internet because I'm an old guy. They said find someone to be your champion. My daughter-in-law volunteered for this project.” – Mike “What happened to me was a miracle because if you look at kidney transplants for people my age, it's really low, when I got my transplant, I was 69.” – Mike “The next words she said were “I'm approved as a donor for Uncle Mike. It just came out of the blue! We had no idea that she went through all these tests. She didn't want anyone to know in case she could not help.” – Mike “It has been one of the best things that I have done in my life. I'm just so grateful for the doctors and for science and for all the support that I was able to find. I was so blessed to be able to give this gift.” – Andrea © Project Advocacy, 2022 - 2023
In the previous episode we heard Darryl's story, how he needed a kidney transplant because of kidney cancer. This week we meet Jim, who responded to “The Big Ask,” and donated a kidney to his close friend Darryl. Jim shares with us his side of the story, explaining why doing this for his “brother” was so important to him, and he describes his overall experience of making “The Big Give.” And Dr. Adam Bregman joins us to talk about his experience with kidney transplant patients using resources from programs such as “The Big Ask, The Big Give” to help find their own living donor. He also explains how a kidney from a living donor tends to last longer. We also explore the subject of health disparities in kidney disease and discuss some of the root causes. “What we have learned throughout the years of running the Big Give… is that Match Funding is a great way to get more people to give, and people to give more.” The Big Give is the UK's leading online match funding platform. The Big Give Christmas Challenge took place from the 29th of November to the 6th of December 2022 and in that one week, raised £28.6m for over 1,000 charities across the UK. With more than £233m raised to date, the Big Give has been a huge enabler of digital fundraising through Match Funding. With the strap line “Matching Donations, Multiplying Impact”, they are in essence, a Generosity Multiplier. In this episode I speak with the Big Give's Managing Director, Alex Day, about how the Big Give came into being, its plans for the future, and tech as an enabler for social good. Alex also shares how through a focus on building resilience, skills and profile for charities, and amplifying the campaign's messaging, they have enabled 92% of participating organisations to reach new supporters bringing in a third of the overall donations. Charity fundraisers, listen to find out about the Big Give's campaigns that are launching this year and how your charity could benefit. Recorded December 2022.
