Selena Not Afraid was a young Native American teen who was out with friends one night, when they started having car trouble on the road. While waiting at a rest stop for a friend's parent, Selena disappeared. She was missing for about three weeks before her body was discovered nearby, frozen. But the situation all seemed suspicious, like there was something missing in the story. SIGN THIS PLEASE: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/s... Selena Not Afraid was a 16 yo indigenous girl who went missing on January 1 2020, after being left by a group of adults in their 20's at a rest stop in Hardin Montana. Her body was found 20 days later, in a field with in a MILE from the rest stop she was last seen at. Autopsy reports are conflicting to Family statements and evidence, and the toxicology report shows a shocking truth.** Please know we did our very best at pronunciation of all names and indigenous words. I listened to pronunciations and had help but I know it wasn't the best still. A teenager found in a field, another in a yard, another near a highway rest stop. They were the latest in the long line of deaths of Native women from Montana's Crow and Northern Cheyenne reservations. Despite their suspicious nature, investigators failed to call the deaths crimes. The incidents drew attention to the larger issue of Native American and First Nation women missing and murdered in the US and Canada. The cases have been largely ignored by the media, met with law enforcement indifference, and inflicted pain on a marginalized community.Showtime's “Murder in Big Horn” asks questions about the deaths of Henny Scott, Kaysera Stops Pretty Places, and Selena Not Afraid, as well as the pattern of missing and murdered Indigenous women. It explores the many issues contributing to the problem, like historical colonization, economic inequities, sex trafficking, and the lack of consequences for violence against women by Native and white men alike.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "MURDER IN BIG HORN" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 11 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.
In July 2018, 22 year old Tristen Gray was killed in a hit and run in Billings, Montana. Even with the driver identified, surveillance footage and witness statements, her case is still considered unsolved and no criminal charges have been filed. Tristen Gray was the older sister of Selena Not Afraid, whose tragic story we covered in Episode 2. Laura interviews former LA prosecutor and legal expert Loni Coombs about her new documentary Murdered and Missing Montana. Gabby Petito's case received a lot of media attention – and started a conversation about the fact that Native American women and girls are the most stalked, raped and murdered in America yet no-one is talking about them. Indigenous women are 10 times more likely to be killed than the national average. And Indigenous girls and women aged between 10-34 years of age the third most prevalent cause of death is murder. 94% of Native America women will be raped or coerced in their lifetime. We get into how and why and we discuss three cases in particular, Selena Not Afraid, Kaysera Stops Pretty Places and Henny Scott. On January 20 2020, many people were pained by the news that Selena Not Afraid was found less than a mile away from the rest stop from which we vanished. Selena was mourned by her numerous loved ones, and by a greater community of people following her story. This episode isn't about Selena's case. Selena's legacy is not the way she died. It's the way she lived, and the heartbreak of such a life cut short.

In a mysterious turn of events, Selena Not Afraid disappeared from a rest stop in rural Montana. Hundreds of people showed up to the rest stop the next day to comb the surrounding fields on foot, ATV, and horseback. The area was also searched by helicopter and thermal drone. Selena's family and volunteer searchers stayed at the rest stop for weeks. And then, 3 days after the search relocated from the rest stop, Selena was found less than a mile away.

On the night of New Years Eve 2019 Selena Not Afraid found herself with an older crowd. Her night involved a house party, going out to a bar, and a couple 911 calls in the early hours of the morning. Since this podcast is not investigative journalism, I don't know the specifics of what happened that night. But, no matter the specifics, Selena faced a lot of danger spending a night out in Billings.
Solidarity House Cooperative is honored to share the premiere episode of Law Ain't Order, an important new podcast by our friend and collaborator Emma Jane. 16-year-old Selena Not Afraid started the night of New Years Eve 2019 at home with her mom. When plans changed spontaneously, she decided to go out and see a friend. Selena's mom had no reason to think that her daughter wouldn't make it home safely. But like far too many other Native American women and girls, Selena went out for the night and the next day was reported missing. For more on MMIW on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne reservations visit this article. You can hear the Law Ain't Order podcast here.

The numbers are staggering: Since 2016, over 6,800 Indigenous Women have gone missing in the United States. These same women are 10 times more likely to be victims of abuse, rape or murder compared to any other race or ethnicity. And Native American Women are a tremendous 40% of the country's sex-trafficked victims. In Montana alone, Indigenous women make up 6.7% of the population, but 26% of its missing people. This is the story of four of those women: women who were targeted, tortured, drugged, taken against their will, missing, left for dead and murdered. They are Henny Scott, Kaysera Stops Pretty Places, Selena Not Afraid and Jermain Charlo. May justice one day be served. When 16-year-old Selena Not Afraid goes missing from a rest stop in rural Montana the community comes together to find her. Searches with helicopters, thermal drones, dogs, and hundreds of volunteers cover a 5 mile radius around the rest stop. Selena's family and volunteer search party stay at the rest stop for weeks. When the search is eventually handed over to law enforcement and Selena's family leaves the rest stop, Selena is found less than a mile away. Police say that Selena wandered off on the day she went missing and froze to death in the place she was found. Searchers who covered that area say that it would have been impossible to miss finding Selena in that spot. We may never know what happened to Selena but her death is not a mystery. Selena and so many other Native American people go missing and get murdered because the law allows it to happen. Because the system is broken and the law ain't order.
In Volume 1 of what will be a series of episodes, Jaclyn and Courtney focus on telling the stories of missing and murdered indigenous women. Media fails to highlight these stories on a regular basis. Henny Scott, Keysera Stops Pretty Places and Selena Not Afraid were three young women who went missing and were later found deceased. Their families were left with many questions and little to no answers as to what happened to these girls. Sadly this is a great problem for the Natives in Montana and law enforcement needs to do more. These 3 women are just 3 of MANY missing and murdered indigenous women in the state of Montana. Something needs to be done. This stigma needs to end. If you enjoy our podcast, please leave us a rating and review! The teenager from Montana had her whole life ahead of her when she disappeared at a rest stop on New Years Day, left behind by the people who were taking her back home after a New Years Eve party. When her body was found days later, the family still didn't have the answers they wanted and continue to push to find out what happened to Selena.

This is a tarot reading on Selena Bell, who went missing on New Years 2020 and later found and pronounced dead a mile away from where she was last seen. This should also bring awareness to the large sum of missing Native American women in the United States that is poorly investigated and documented. This is a huge problem that is being severely overlooked. Please do your own research. (For entertainment purposes but with respect and integrity. Matters like this mean a lot to me, and I genuinely use my intuition and interpretation of the cards. I do not have personal knowledge or witness a crime being committed.) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
