Lindsay Clancy Trial Day Twenty Two | Closing Arguments & Jury Deliberations Begin

Day Twenty Two brought the Lindsay Clancy trial to its final stage. After five weeks of testimony from more than 80 witnesses, Kevin Reddington and ADA Jennifer Sprague delivered closing arguments presenting two very different explanations for why Lindsay killed her three children, Cora, Dawson and Callan.Reddington argued that Lindsay was suffering from severe postpartum mental illness and psychosis, highlighting her deteriorating condition, repeated attempts to get help, extensive medication history and the defense experts who concluded she lacked criminal responsibility. The Commonwealth acknowledged Lindsay was mentally ill but argued she still understood right from wrong and retained control of her actions, pointing to the errands she sent Patrick on, her behavior before the killings and questions surrounding her account of a command hallucination.Judge William Sullivan then gave the jury its final instructions, including the law surrounding first-degree murder, second-degree murder, manslaughter and lack of criminal responsibility. Six alternates were released, leaving a deliberating jury of nine women and three men.The case is now officially in the jury's hands. After 21 days of testimony and sharply conflicting psychiatric opinions, the central question is no longer whether Lindsay Clancy was mentally ill—but whether the Commonwealth proved beyond a reasonable doubt that she was criminally responsible when she killed her children.

Lindsay Clancy Trial Day 21 | Final Witness Makes a Stunning Concession

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 26, 2026 248:23

Day 21 marked the end of testimony in the Lindsay Clancy trial after five weeks of evidence. The Commonwealth's final rebuttal witness, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff, told jurors that Lindsay was suffering from a mental disease or defect—he believed Bipolar II disorder was the best diagnosis—but nevertheless concluded that she understood right from wrong, remained in control of her behavior and was criminally responsible when she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan.Saathoff argued that Lindsay's behavior on January 24 showed significant organization and control. He pointed to her activities throughout the day, sending Patrick out for medication and takeout, the absence of witnesses during the killings, and her ability to carry out the strangulations without the alleged voice telling her specifically how, where or with what to kill the children. He also remained skeptical of Lindsay's account that a male voice suddenly appeared, commanded the killings and then disappeared afterward. But Kevin Reddington's cross-examination produced several important concessions. Saathoff acknowledged that he didn't interview Lindsay until more than three years after the killings, that there can be benefits to evaluating someone closer to the event, and that he had personally treated only two women with postpartum psychosis—both decades ago. He also agreed that being turned away while suicidal could have a serious effect on a patient and acknowledged Lindsay experienced significant medication side effects.Perhaps the most striking moment came at the very end. Reddington read Saathoff part of the Commonwealth's own opening statement, which portrayed Lindsay as deciding she no longer wanted the life she had and making a calculated choice to kill her children and herself. Saathoff responded that the prosecution's description “really minimizes what she was going through.”After Saathoff finished, the Commonwealth officially rested its rebuttal case, ending the evidentiary phase after 21 days of testimony. The jury was sent home while Judge William Sullivan and the attorneys worked through the final jury instructions and verdict forms. Sullivan denied Reddington's request for a special instruction allowing jurors to consider alleged deficiencies in the police investigation, although the defense may still argue those deficiencies during closing.Closing arguments are set for Thursday morning, followed by Judge Sullivan's instructions. The jury could begin deliberating Thursday afternoon.

Lindsay Clancy Trial Day 20 | Final Witness Challenges Her “Command Voice”

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 26, 2026 286:27

Day 20 of the Lindsay Clancy trial brought the Commonwealth's rebuttal case—and nearly five weeks of testimony—close to its conclusion. Forensic psychologist Dr. Kirk Heilbrun returned to the stand and maintained that although Lindsay suffered from significant mental illness, she was criminally responsible when she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan. On cross-examination, however, Heilbrun acknowledged that testing did not indicate Lindsay was lying, exaggerating or malingering during his evaluation. The Commonwealth then called its final witness, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff, a University of Virginia professor and senior psychiatrist with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit. Saathoff gave jurors one of the most detailed accounts yet of what Lindsay says happened inside the house. According to his interviews with her, Lindsay said a male voice began repeatedly commanding her to kill the children and herself shortly after her 5:34 p.m. phone call with Patrick. She described strangling Dawson, Cora and then Callan before the voice abruptly stopped. But Saathoff challenged the credibility of that account. He highlighted inconsistencies in when Lindsay has said the voice began, the unusual claim that the voice appeared suddenly and disappeared immediately after the children were dead, and discrepancies involving other details of that evening. He testified that this pattern was inconsistent with his extensive experience treating people with psychosis.Day 20 therefore left jurors with the fundamental psychiatric dispute of this case: Was Lindsay experiencing a genuine command hallucination during a catastrophic psychotic break—or is the voice an unreliable explanation that emerged after the killings? With the Commonwealth's final expert now on the stand, testimony is almost over and closing arguments are expected next, bringing the jury very close to deciding whether Lindsay Clancy was criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children.

Lindsay Clancy Trial Day 19 | Mistrial Fight Erupts During Expert Testimony

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2026 260:02

Day 19 of the Lindsay Clancy trial brought some of the most contentious expert testimony yet. The morning began with defense attorney Kevin Reddington continuing his cross-examination of Commonwealth forensic psychiatrist Dr. Avram Mack, who maintains that Lindsay suffered from major depression but was not psychotic and remained capable of understanding that killing Cora, Dawson and Callan was wrong. The exchanges became heated enough that Judge William Sullivan repeatedly intervened, including after Reddington challenged Mack over his experience with postpartum mental illness. The Commonwealth then called its second rebuttal expert, forensic psychologist Dr. Kirk Heilbrun. Interestingly, Heilbrun diagnosed Lindsay with Bipolar II disorder, but rejected the defense's explanation that an acute psychotic episode and command hallucination caused the killings. Instead, he offered a theory of suicide combined with altruistic filicide—that Lindsay intended to die and killed the children because she believed they would suffer without her. He also questioned Lindsay's report of suddenly hearing a male voice only during the killings, suggesting the reported hallucination could have been exaggerated or fabricated. Then came a major courtroom confrontation. Heilbrun referenced Lindsay's Catholic faith while discussing suicide. Judge Sullivan immediately stopped the testimony and sent the jury out. Reddington moved for a mistrial, particularly significant because religion had already become an issue earlier in the defense case. Sullivan denied the mistrial but strongly condemned the religious reference and instructed jurors that Lindsay's religion must play no role whatsoever in their deliberations.Day 19 ultimately sharpened the central question facing this jury. The defense experts say Lindsay was psychotic and lacked criminal responsibility. The Commonwealth's experts agree she was seriously mentally ill—but argue that mental illness did not prevent her from understanding or controlling what she was doing. With Heilbrun's testimony still unfinished and the Commonwealth's rebuttal continuing, closing arguments and jury deliberations are now very close.

Day 18 brought the Lindsay Clancy defense case to an end with testimony from renowned forensic psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Resnick, who previously testified in the Andrea Yates case. Resnick told jurors he believed Lindsay was “frankly psychotic” when she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan. He described her reported command hallucination and her belief that an outside force had taken control, concluding that she could not appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions or control her behavior. He also testified that he found no evidence Lindsay was malingering or exaggerating her psychiatric symptoms. After Resnick finished, Kevin Reddington announced, “Lindsay Clancy rests,” and the Commonwealth immediately began its rebuttal case with forensic psychiatrist Dr. Avram Mack. Mack offered jurors a dramatically different interpretation, diagnosing Lindsay with major depression and anxiety while disputing the defense's bipolar diagnosis and the claim that she was psychotic. He testified that Lindsay retained the ability to control her actions and revealed a striking detail from his interviews with her: Lindsay recalled telling the children “go to God” while strangling them.Day 18 gave the jury the expert battle this trial has been building toward: Was Lindsay experiencing postpartum psychosis that eliminated her criminal responsibility, or was she severely depressed but still capable of understanding and controlling what she was doing? The Commonwealth's rebuttal will continue before closing arguments and jury deliberations.#LindsayClancy #LindsayClancyTrial #TrueCrimeSquad #PostpartumPsychosis #TrueCrime

Day 17 of the Lindsay Clancy trial was unusually short but produced important new testimony. Hospital chaplain Sheila Cavanaugh, who has visited Lindsay at least 14 times since the deaths, testified that Lindsay repeatedly described hearing a persistent male voice telling her to kill Cora, Dawson and Callan and then kill herself. Cavanaugh also recalled Lindsay expressing relief that her children were now “safe,” testimony the defense can use to support its claim that Lindsay's thinking remained delusional after the killings. Prosecutors challenged the account by pointing out that some of these details were not included in Cavanaugh's contemporaneous notes. Before testimony began, there was another unusual courtroom development: jurors were questioned individually by Judge William Sullivan, following Wednesday's unexplained early adjournment. The substance of those conversations has not been publicly disclosed. Then, after only about 30 minutes of testimony, Sullivan sent the jury home early for the second consecutive day. Closing arguments are now expected early next week as the defense approaches the end of its case.Outside court, hundreds of supporters—many dressed in pink—gathered in a silent demonstration supporting Lindsay and calling attention to postpartum mental illness and gaps in maternal mental-health care. Signs and shirts included messages such as “Believe,” “She Needed Help,” and “Peace for Lindsay.” It was the largest public show of support for Lindsay during the trial.Join True Crime Squad as we break down the surprising events of Day 17, Cavanaugh's testimony about the alleged command hallucination, the mysterious juror questioning and early adjournment, and where the case stands as testimony draws to a close.

Outside the jury's presence, former McLean Hospital social worker Emily Thorndike was questioned as a potential defense witness, but Judge William Sullivan ultimately ruled that she would not be permitted to testify before the jury because of the limited relevance of her testimony. The day then ended unexpectedly. Day 15 brought some of the most important defense testimony yet in the Lindsay Clancy trial. Psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel, who has met with Lindsay more than 60 times since the deaths, testified about her reported hallucinations, paranoia and psychotic symptoms. Most significantly, he described Lindsay's account of hearing a male voice commanding her to kill her children and herself. Zeizel testified that he believes Lindsay suffered from postpartum psychosis and said he found no evidence that she was malingering or fabricating her symptoms.Jurors also heard from Dr. Donald Condie, who addressed Lindsay's psychiatric treatment and the possibility of bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis, and forensic pathologist Dr. Elizabeth Laposata, who testified about Lindsay's severe injuries after she jumped from the second-story window. Family testimony continued to portray Lindsay as a loving mother whose mental health deteriorated dramatically while she repeatedly sought help.Join True Crime Squad as we break down Day 15, the defense's psychiatric evidence, Lindsay's reported command hallucination, and the testimony that goes directly to the question at the center of this trial: Was Lindsay Clancy criminally responsible when she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan?#LindsayClancy #LindsayClancyTrial #TrueCrimeSquad #PostpartumPsychosis #TrueCrime

Lindsay Clancy Trial Day 14 | Prosecution Rests, Defense Begins

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2026 202:42

Day 14 marked a major turning point in the Lindsay Clancy trial as the Commonwealth officially rested its case after nearly 70 witnesses and roughly three weeks of testimony. Prosecutors finished with digital-forensics expert Ian Whiffin of Cellebrite, who analyzed data from Lindsay's iPhone and Apple Watch. The evidence provided jurors with new details about Lindsay's phone activity, movement and health data during the critical period on January 24, 2023.After the Commonwealth rested, Kevin Reddington immediately began Lindsay's defense case, shifting the focus dramatically toward her deteriorating mental condition before the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan. Among the first defense witnesses were Lindsay's former coworker, her sister Kelly Musgrove, her mother Paula Musgrove, and an emergency-medicine physician. Some of the most important testimony came from Lindsay's family. Her mother described a dramatic change in her daughter beginning in late 2022, including severe anxiety, paranoia, insomnia and suicidal thoughts. Paula testified that Lindsay repeatedly sought help and complained that the psychiatric medications she was being prescribed were “destroying my mind.” She also testified that Lindsay disclosed having thoughts about harming the children—an especially significant piece of evidence because it documents disturbing thoughts before January 24 rather than relying solely on Lindsay's descriptions after the killings.Lindsay's sister also described watching her deteriorate and testified about Lindsay experiencing persistent suicidal thoughts. Together, the family testimony began laying the foundation for the defense argument that Lindsay's condition was far more severe than it may have appeared during brief appointments with psychiatric providers.Day 14 therefore represents the clearest dividing line of the trial so far: the prosecution has finished telling jurors why it believes Lindsay was mentally ill but still criminally responsible; now the defense gets to explain why it believes her illness, alleged postpartum psychosis, possible bipolar disorder and psychiatric treatment left her unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of killing her children.

Lindsay Clancy Trial Day 13 | Her Phone Searches & Private Notes Revealed

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2026 200:14

Day 13 of the Lindsay Clancy trial shifted away from the graphic autopsy evidence of Day 12 and focused heavily on Lindsay's digital footprint—her internet searches, private notes, text messages and phone activity in the months and days before the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan.Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Kyle Pavao, formerly assigned to the cybercrime unit, testified about his forensic examination of a Microsoft Surface Pro recovered from the Clancy home. Jurors learned that the device accessed a page concerning suicide methods in August 2022, although defense attorney Kevin Reddington established on cross-examination that the page was reached through links connected to a search for singer-songwriter Tom T. Hall, who died by suicide. Reddington also emphasized that Pavao could not establish that Lindsay herself was necessarily the person using the computer. The defense then elicited a series of other searches from December 2022 that provide important context to Lindsay's psychiatric state. They included searches concerning bipolar disorder, mania, benzodiazepines, psychiatric overprescribing, detox programs, DBT and ketamine treatment. These searches potentially support the defense argument that Lindsay recognized something was seriously wrong and was actively trying to understand what was happening to her.Former State Police detective Timothy Chiappini then walked jurors through Lindsay's iPhone. One of the most significant pieces of evidence was an October 2022 note in which Lindsay described herself as sad and depressed, struggling to parent three children the way she wanted, feeling less connected to Callan after stopping breastfeeding and experiencing resentment toward Cora and Dawson because of the demands of caring for all three children. The jury also heard about Lindsay's internet searches concerning hallucinations and psychosis. Particularly striking was a January 20, 2023 search—just four days before the killings—asking whether a sociopath could be treated. That evidence could cut both ways: prosecutors can argue it demonstrates Lindsay was consciously researching disturbing psychological concepts shortly before the killings, while the defense can argue that her searches demonstrate a woman actively questioning and researching her deteriorating mental condition.Chiappini also reconstructed Lindsay and Patrick's communications on January 24, 2023. Jurors saw their seemingly ordinary text exchange about dinner and ThreeV restaurant and heard about the calls between them after Patrick left the house—including the approximately 14-second conversation shortly before the killings. That digital evidence helps establish one of the most important timelines in the prosecution's case. There was also a significant development outside the jury's presence involving defense psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel. Judge William Sullivan ruled that prosecutors may review records showing Zeizel's visits with Lindsay while she was being held in the court lockup. This relates to the Commonwealth's suggestion that Zeizel may have influenced Lindsay's later account of hearing a male voice telling her to kill herself and the children. Importantly, that remains a prosecution theory—not established evidence that Zeizel actually coached Lindsay.

Day 12 of the Lindsay Clancy trial was one of the most emotionally difficult days yet, combining testimony about Lindsay's deteriorating mental health with graphic medical evidence concerning the deaths of Cora and Dawson Clancy.Jurors first heard more about Lindsay's psychiatric condition before January 24, 2023. Mental-health counselor Latiesha Dukes, who treated Lindsay through a perinatal behavioral-health program, testified about Lindsay reporting emotional numbness and passive suicidal thoughts. Despite those symptoms, Dukes said she did not have concerns for Lindsay's immediate safety; because Lindsay did not report a concrete suicide plan, a formal safety plan was not developed. The defense used the testimony to continue highlighting what it portrays as gaps in the mental-health system and fragmented care among Lindsay's numerous providers. The afternoon then shifted dramatically to the medical examiner testimony. Dr. Renee Stonebridge and Dr. Barbara Olson testified about the autopsy findings and injuries suffered by Cora and Dawson. The medical evidence supported asphyxia as the cause of death, with testimony concerning hemorrhaging, bruising and other findings associated with the fatal compression.Lindsay became extremely emotional as the testimony and autopsy photographs were presented. She could be heard sobbing and at one point saying “I can't do this.” Judge William Sullivan stopped the proceedings and excused the jury at various points so Lindsay could regain her composure. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington remained beside her and consoled her during portions of the testimony.Notably, Reddington did not cross-examine the medical examiners about the fundamental autopsy findings. That fits the defense strategy: Lindsay's attorneys are not contesting that she caused her children's deaths. Their case centers on whether she was criminally responsible when she did so.Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Dan Lawlor also testified, and an intriguing issue emerged concerning Lindsay's later report that she had heard a male voice telling her to kill the children and herself. Reddington questioned Lawlor about whether investigators had discussed a theory that forensic psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel might have influenced Lindsay's description of hearing voices after the killings. Lawlor acknowledged the discussion but, importantly, no direct evidence was presented establishing that Zeizel actually coached Lindsay to make that claim.

Day 11 of the Lindsay Clancy trial put her psychiatric treatment and medication history under intense scrutiny. Jurors heard extensively from psychiatric nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta, who treated Lindsay during the months before the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan. Jollotta testified about Lindsay's severe insomnia, anxiety, feelings of numbness and detachment, medication concerns and episodes of suicidal thinking. She said that despite Lindsay's worsening symptoms, she never observed Lindsay displaying psychosis or expressing a plan to harm her children. The defense focused heavily on possible gaps in Lindsay's care. Jollotta acknowledged that she did not obtain records from all of Lindsay's other psychiatric providers, and testimony revealed that a specialized postpartum program had concerns Lindsay might be overmedicated—information that Jollotta apparently did not receive or pursue at the time. The jury also heard about repeated medication changes, Lindsay's fear of becoming dependent on Ativan, and her increasingly desperate attempts to find something that would allow her to sleep and feel normal again.Join True Crime Squad as we break down the biggest moments from Day 11, the testimony of Lindsay's psychiatric providers, Kevin Reddington's cross-examination, the questions surrounding coordination of her care, and what this evidence means for the central issue facing the jury: Was Lindsay Clancy criminally responsible, or had her mental illness deteriorated to the point that she could no longer appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions?

Day 10 of the Lindsay Clancy trial centered on an intense and at times contentious cross-examination of Dr. Jennifer Tufts, the psychiatrist who treated Lindsay from September 2022 until just before the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington challenged Tufts about her experience, Lindsay's medications, the completeness of the medical information available to her, and how she assessed Lindsay's worsening psychiatric symptoms. Tufts acknowledged that she did not have Lindsay's complete medical record while treating her.Reddington's questioning focused heavily on whether warning signs were missed and whether Lindsay's rapidly changing medication regimen could have contributed to her deterioration. The exchanges became tense enough that Judge William Sullivan intervened at points during the questioning, including instructing Tufts to allow Reddington to finish his questions before answering.
