Welcome to Nightmares of the Americas Indigenous tales, where the harrowing reality of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) is brought to light. Our women and girls are vanishing at an alarming rate, yet their stories often go untold. According to the National Crime Information Center's data up to 2016, there have been 5,712 reported cases of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls. Shockingly, the U.S Department of Justice's missing persons database has acknowledged only 116 of these cases. What's particularly distressing is that a majority of these disappearances and murders occur on Native-owned land and are perpetrated by non-Native individuals. The challenge is compounded by a lack of communication and jurisdictional complexities among state, local, federal, and tribal law enforcement agencies, making it exceedingly difficult to initiate investigations.Today, we delve into yet another heart-wrenching MMIW case: that of Kaysera Stops Pretty Places. On August 24, 2019, Kaysera vanished near the Crow Reservation. Five agonizing days later, her lifeless body was found in Hardin, Montana, in the vicinity where she was last seen alive. However, the truth of her tragic fate was not revealed to her family until September 11—nearly two weeks after her disappearance. These stories are not isolated incidents; they are part of a larger pattern of violence and injustice faced by Indigenous women and girls across the Americas. Through shedding light on these cases, we aim to honor the lives lost and demand justice for the MMIW community. Join us as we navigate the chilling realities of MMIW and advocate for change. Big Horn County Montana is like ground zero for the MMIW movement. There are countless cases of women disappearing or being murdered in the area but their cases never get solved. The issues in Big Horn County are multidimensional but the fact of the matter is these women deserve justice. Sadly there are many reservations in the U.S. and Canada with the same problems and the MMIW movement is on a mission to build awareness.  Big Horn County Sheriff Office (307) 568-2324 Learn more about your ad choices. A teenager found in a field, another in a yard, another near a highway rest stop. They were the latest in the long line of deaths of Native women from Montana's Crow and Northern Cheyenne reservations. Despite their suspicious nature, investigators failed to call the deaths crimes. The incidents drew attention to the larger issue of Native American and First Nation women missing and murdered in the US and Canada. The cases have been largely ignored by the media, met with law enforcement indifference, and inflicted pain on a marginalized community.Showtime's “Murder in Big Horn” asks questions about the deaths of Henny Scott, Kaysera Stops Pretty Places, and Selena Not Afraid, as well as the pattern of missing and murdered Indigenous women. It explores the many issues contributing to the problem, like historical colonization, economic inequities, sex trafficking, and the lack of consequences for violence against women by Native and white men alike.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "MURDER IN BIG HORN" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 11 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.

In the United States, indigenous women are the ethnic group that is most at risk to be stalked, raped and murdered. And often, these crimes are not prosecuted or even investigated. No arrests. No charges being brought. Across the United States, there are thousands of unsolved cases involving Native Americans. In the last five years alone, almost 7,000 Native girls have gone missing in the United States. Though in America, the indigenous population is only about 1.6 percent of the entire population, a staggering 40% of girls and women sex trafficked in the United States are indigenous. Today we explore the life and crimes committed against Kaysera Stops Pretty Places, an 18 year old high school senior whose life was frozen in time, much like so many other indigenous girls. The numbers are staggering: Since 2016, over 6,800 Indigenous Women have gone missing in the United States. These same women are 10 times more likely to be victims of abuse, rape or murder compared to any other race or ethnicity. And Native American Women are a tremendous 40% of the country's sex-trafficked victims. In Montana alone, Indigenous women make up 6.7% of the population, but 26% of its missing people.  This is the story of four of those women: women who were targeted, tortured, drugged, taken against their will, missing, left for dead and murdered. They are Henny Scott, Kaysera Stops Pretty Places, Selena Not Afraid and Jermain Charlo. May justice one day be served. Show Notes: https://www.oxygen.com/murdered-and-missing-in-montanahttps://open.spotify.com/show/7D4inq4DY144KIZN99Od6t*Correction: Michael DeFrance was indicted on firearms charges on October 2nd, 2018, not October 7th*Sponsors:The Evergreen Murders: A Mackenzie Monroe Christmas Mystery Podcasthttps://open.spotify.com/show/6zANYDlP9SSNQgcdwzLzIjHelpYouFind.Mewww.HelpYouFind.Me/montana15

Kaysera Stops Pretty Places was a teenager in Hardin Montana. She was a member of the Crow Nation. She went missing in August of 2019. In September, her family was alerted that her body had been found and identified. There have been many missteps by law enforcement in this case. The Big Horn County sheriff's office along with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the FBI have largely refused to investigate the murder of Kaysera. Her family has worked tirelessly for justice, including protests, marches, legal means, billboards, and rewards for information. Two years later, Kaysera's family is no closer to the truth than they were the day she died.
