Talks about Harry Houdini
A young French medium sits in total darkness. Hands are joined. The séance begins. Then, something impossible appears. This week on True Hauntings, Anne and Renata unravel the bizarre and controversial story of Eva C, one of history's most infamous physical mediums. Examined by Harry Houdini, defended by Arthur Conan Doyle, and investigated by some of the world's leading paranormal researchers, Eva's séances produced shocking manifestations that left believers convinced and skeptics searching for hidden tricks. Was she a genuine conduit to the spirit world—or one of the greatest performers of the supernatural age? Pt 1 The Curious Cast of Eva C - A True Hauntings Podcast Listener discretion advised: This episode contains mature themes and discussions that may not be suitable for younger audiences. The Lincoln Center revival of Ragtime — with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally, adapted from the novel by E. L. Doctorow — has just garnered 11 Tony Award nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical, along with multiple acting nods for its acclaimed cast. This new production feels more timely and resonant than the one that first played on Broadway in 1998. In addition to the fictional Coalhouse Walker Jr. and the archetypal figures known simply as Father, Mother, and Younger Brother, Ragtime brings to life several real celebrities and power brokers from turn-of-the-century New York. Anna Grace Barlow, who portrays Broadway sensation Evelyn Nesbit, and Rodd Cyrus, who embodies legendary illusionist Harry Houdini, join Carl Raymond from The Gilded Gentleman podcast for a behind-the-scenes conversation about their characters and their experiences bringing this revival to the stage. This show is brought to you by The Gilded Gentleman podcast, produced by the Bowery Boys and edited and produced by Kieran Gannon. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The 1919 competition attracted diverse aviators, including the Australian Harry Hawker, a fearless and sometimes "spiky" test pilot. Inspired by watching Harry Houdini fly in 1910, Hawker became a natural pilot who understood risks instinctively, even while hiding a secret and painful spinal injury from past crashes. He was joined by rivals like Fred Raynham, a quiet pilot with steely resolve who had survived a mid-flight tail snap during the war. The end of the war had destroyed the market for military aircraft overnight, forcing companies like Sopwith to build motorcycles and kitchenware to survive. Consequently, Northcliffe's prize offered a vital way to promote civil aviation. In contrast to these striving young pilots, Admiral Mark Kerr led a team for Handley Page. Born in a palace to an illustrious naval family, Kerr maintained a sharp class distinction, refusing to collaborate with his younger rivals. (2/4)1968 APOLLO 8

Learn more about your ad choices. Jim welcomes author Brad Ricca to explore the surprising intersection of Harry Houdini, Abraham Lincoln, and the explosive rise of spiritualism in America. Brad paints a vivid portrait of Houdini not just as a master illusionist, but as a relentless crusader determined to expose mediums he believed were exploiting grief for profit. From dramatic jail escapes to deeply personal attempts to contact his late mother, Houdini's journey reveals a man caught between skepticism and a yearning to believe. The discussion also dives into the eerie cultural backdrop of the early 20th century, where séances, war-time loss, and political mythmaking collided. Ricca unpacks how Lincoln's legacy became entangled in spiritualist claims, fueling Houdini's mission and shaping a broader battle over truth, belief, and deception. Along the way, the episode touches on chilling moments surrounding Houdini's death, the enduring mystery of his final days, and the lasting question that still lingers today: where does illusion end and something else begin? Storia e testi (Mondadori-Ricordi, 2011). The most famous airship disaster in history left behind more than wreckage — and something at Lakehurst Naval Station may still be waiting to prove it.IN THIS EPISODE: In the Oakland Cemetery, a bronze monument to tragedy is said to bring death to anyone who touches it. (Black Angel of Death) *** While camping, a man has dreams of a dark-haired woman several nights in a row. Normally it wouldn't be anything to be all that concerned about, but it's something to fear if you are near the French Broad river. (Siren of the French Broad) *** Alien visitors, beings from a different dimension, our planet even had tree monsters and sentient pyramids showing up – and all in the year 1965. (The Inter-Dimensional Interlopers of 1965) *** A retired naval officer reports rocks falling through his home's roof – dozens in a single day – with no explanation of where they came from. (Cappy Ricks and the Stones) *** In 1994 a man has a paranormal experience with a popular song recorded two decades earlier. (The Joker) *** Is there a clandestine space program designed to save the elite from a global catastrophe? (Alternative 3) *** On this date, October 24, 1953, Evelyn Hartley, a 15-year-old sophomore from La Crosse, Wisconsin, vanished without a trace while on her way to a babysitting job. It was like something out of a Halloween urban legend but in this case, the horror was real. (The Babysitter Who Vanished) *** The odd happening that takes place here and there in a house more than likely can be explained in some rational way. Even quite a few strange occurrences could probably be explained by science. But when the events seem to never stop, perhaps it's time to think something else is going on. (An Assortment of Experiences) *** Legend tells a centuries-old curse was placed upon Dudleytown in Connecticut. The town turned into a horrible place where people committed suicide or went insane. (Cursed Dudleytown) *** Exactly 92 years ago today – October 24, 1926 - something went wrong during a performance by Harry Houdini. A week later, he would be dead. (Houdini's Final Performance) *** The Hamilton-Byrne family was anything but typical, rather it was a doomsday cult with a leader who believed herself to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. (Inside the Family Cult) *** AND MUCH MORE!CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = The Foreboding00:02:29.943 = Show Open00:05:52.861 = The History and Hauntings of the Hindenburg Disaster00:27:54.180 = Black-Eyed People, Why Are They So Different From The Rest Of Us? ***00:43:29.354 = Bumps In The Night00:45:45.168 = Evil Spirits And Demons of Marshes and Swamps in Slavic Folklore00:50:51.703 = Old Man of the Cave ***00:55:33.569 = The Seer of Possibilities (HORROR FICTION)01:30:12.436 = Alternative 3 ***01:53:15.007 = Black Angel of Death ***01:57:49.531 = The Siren of French Broad02:06:46.744 = The Interdimensional Interlopers of 1965 ***02:18:25.414 = The Joker02:22:07.498 = Cappy Ricks and the Stones02:30:20.564 = Inside The Family Cult ***02:37:24.232 = The Babysitter Who Vanished02:45:42.580 = An Assortment of Experiences02:54:21.925 = Cursed Duddleytown ***02:59:43.212 = Houdini's Final Performance03:07:25.003 = Show Close*** = Begins immediately after inserted ad breakHELPFUL LINKS & RESOURCES…https://WeirdDarkness.com/ALBUMS = Songs and Videos by our Weird Darkness punk band, #DarkWeirdnesshttps://WeirdDarkness.com/STORE = Tees, Mugs, Socks, Hoodies, Totes, Hats, Kidswear & Morehttps://WeirdDarkness.com/HOPE = Hope For Depression or Thoughts of Self-Harmhttps://WeirdDarkness.com/NEWSLETTER = In-Depth Articles, Memes, Weird DarkNEWS, Videos & Morehttps://WeirdDarkness.com/AUDIOBOOKS = FREE Audiobooks Narrated By Darren Marlar EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources): https://weirddarkness.com/hindenburgSOURCES and RESOURCES:“The History and Hauntings Of The Hindenburg Disaster” (from the book “And Hell Followed With It” by Troy Taylor: http://amzn.to/2zrimTY“Old Man of the Cave”: https://tinyurl.com/taa9h3w“Evil Spirits And Demons Of Marshes And Swamps In Slavic Folklore”: https://tinyurl.com/t79ccnz“Bumps in the Night”: (link no longer valid)“Black Eyed People, Why Are They So Different From The Rest of Us”: (link no longer valid)“The Seer Of Possibilities” (Creepypasta): https://tinyurl.com/ycz95rnp“Alternative 3”: https://tinyurl.com/w4f5edr“Black Angel of Death” by Orrin Grey: http://ow.ly/v2m430mkGWs“The Interdimensional Interlopers of 1965” by Brent Swancer: https://tinyurl.com/rwy5jdd“Siren of the French Broad”: https://tinyurl.com/sa2ewrt“The Joker” by Rory Kavenagh – submitted directly to WeirdDarkness.com“Cappy Ricks and the Stones”: https://tinyurl.com/ybc3o3rb“The Babysitter Who Vanished” by Troy Taylor: https://tinyurl.com/w9ohx8k“An Assortment of Experiences”: https://tinyurl.com/quqbbmg“Inside the Family Cult” by Joel Stice: https://tinyurl.com/tobap65“Cursed Dudleytown”: https://tinyurl.com/s3sg49m“Houdini's Final Performance” by Troy Taylor: https://tinyurl.com/sj5bsjw(Over time links may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. Did the Fox Sisters really talk to the dead, or start the biggest paranormal hoax in American history? Host Aaron Sagers is joined by author Barb Rosenstock to explore American Spirits, the true story of the sisters who launched the Spiritualism movement in the lead up to the Civil War with their mysterious “spirit rappings.” In her compelling book that goes deep into the strange lives of celebrity, famous interactions, and struggles with alcohol, Barb discusses belief vs. deception, why séances took hold across America, and how grief and the media fueled a national obsession with the afterlife. She also answers the question of whether Leah Fox is the villain of the story. Plus, a look at Houdini's Library and Harry Houdini's lifelong love of books. In this episode of Reading With Your Kids, Jed welcomes picture book author Barb Rosenstock to talk about her captivating new title, Houdini's Library. Drawing on her deep love of history and storytelling, Barb shares how a tiny sign at the Library of Congress—"Houdini Collection" —sparked years of research and ultimately this book. Barb and Jed dive into the real Harry Houdini: not just the "handcuff king" and daring escape artist, but a relentless learner who built a massive working library of magic books. Barb explains that Houdini, who likely had only a second‑ or third‑grade education, used books to teach himself everything—from escapes to showmanship to public relations. They talk about how he studied older tricks, respected the magicians who came before him, and combined ideas to create something new—powerful lessons for kids about persistence, creativity, and hard work. Barb also highlights the team effort behind both Houdini's performances and her own books, reminding listeners that big achievements are almost never solo acts. She connects Houdini's discipline to athletes like Kobe Bryant: the first in the gym, the last to leave, still practicing even at the top. Later in the episode, Jed chats with 12‑year‑old author Shravya Khandelwal, whose middle grade novel The Curse of Judice blends suspense, demons, and a brave heroine named Sarah. Shravya talks about her love of spooky, supernatural stories, how curiosity pulls kids into mysteries, and what it feels like to be a young, published author balancing school, big dreams, and book promotion.

Magic and Medicines is BACK - just like the ooky-spooky ghosts summoned up by believers in this episode's topic - Spiritualism! As we discuss, philosophically speaking 'Spiritualism' is a big old tradition, involving any belief system rooted in concepts of souls, spirits, or supernatural forces. In the 19th century however, during the Second Great Awakening in upstate New York, Spiritualist ideas from a range of Revivalist traditions combined to make something new.Exploding in popularity following America's Civil War, then booming again in Britain after the Great War, new generations of 'Mediums' had come forth, channeling ghosts and cosmic forces in ways that would have been recognisable in Prophets, Holy Maids and Cunning Folk from the Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance eras.Which is to say, Necromancy was back after a rebrand - and so were its enemies, in the forms of debunkers, prosecutors, and many a Society of Psychical Research. From rapping tables to sudden splurges of ectoplasm, Spiritualist manifestos to Harry Houdini hunting severed hands hidden in delicate places, this one has it all.So, turn off the lights, light some candles, and let's all hold hands...Is there anybody there?!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?REGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURProud members of the Dark Cast Network.Visit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast. P. Lovecraft. On October 31, 1926, Harry Houdini — the world-famous escape artist and illusionist whose death-defying feats made him one of the first global superstars of modern entertainment — passed away at the age of 52. Born Erik Weisz to a poor immigrant family, Houdini rose from carnivals and dime museums to international fame through relentless discipline, physical endurance, and an obsession with mastering the impossible. He stunned audiences with escapes from straitjackets, locked safes, water-filled tanks, and prison cells, redefining magic as a test of human will as much as illusion. Beyond the stage, Houdini became a fierce skeptic, dedicating his later years to exposing fraudulent spiritualists and defending truth over spectacle. With unmatched showmanship, precision, and daring, Houdini transformed magic into a mass-culture phenomenon and set the standard for every escape artist who followed, leaving behind a legacy built on fearlessness, control, and the relentless pursuit of wonder. January 25, 1908. Harry Houdini is the most famous magician in America. He's known for his escapes – from handcuffs, boxes, jail cells, even a giant football. But the escape act is getting old, and ticket sales aren't what they used to be. And on this day, an under-capacity audience at the Columbia Theater in St. Louis is about to witness Houdini's most dangerous escape yet… from death itself. How did a Hungarian immigrant named Erik Weisz become Harry Houdini? And when his career was fading, how did Houdini embrace death to bring it back to life? Special thanks to our guest, Joe Posnanski, author of The Life and Afterlife of Harry Houdini. Additional thanks to San Diego magician Tom Interval for providing archival audio of Houdini. ** This episode originally aired Jan 25, 2021. The Sterling Opera House in Derby, Connecticut, is one of New England's most haunted and historically complex buildings. Opened in 1889 as a grand cultural landmark, it hosted performers like Harry Houdini, John Philip Sousa, and Amelia Earhart. Also, it hid a whole police station and jail directly beneath the stage. While audiences applauded upstairs, criminals sat locked in the cells below. In this episode, we explore the opera house's dramatic past, its ties to the Titanic, its rumored Houdini escape stunt, and the decades it sat abandoned. Then we dive into the paranormal activity that has made the Sterling a hotspot for investigators: voices in the basement, unexplained scratches, the balcony spirit known as “Andy,” and sightings of the White Lady.A deep look at Connecticut history, true crime, and one of the state's most active haunted locations. hauntedamericanhistory.comPatreon- https://www.patreon.com/hauntedamericanhistoryLINKS FOR MY DEBUT NOVEL, THE FORGOTTEN BOROUGHBarnes and Noble - https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-forgotten-borough-christopher-feinstein/1148274794?ean=9798319693334AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQPQD68SEbookGOOGLE: https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=S5WCEQAAQBAJ&pli=1KOBO: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-forgotten-borough-2?sId=a10cf8af-5fbd-475e-97c4-76966ec87994&ssId=DX3jihH_5_2bUeP1xoje_SMASHWORD: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1853316 !! The new revival of the musical Ragtime, by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (book by Terrence McNally, based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow), is one of the big hits of the new Broadway season. Lincoln Center Theater has produced the latest rendition, and times have certainly changed since the musical's original Broadway production in 1998. The new revival makes the show's characters and issues even more relevant for our present day. Along with the fictional character Coalhouse Walker Jr. and the archetypal characters Father, Mother, and Younger Brother, the show features several celebrities and power players from turn-of-the-century New York. Anna Grace Barlow, who plays Broadway star Evelyn Nesbit, and Rodd Cyrus, who stars as iconic illusionist Harry Houdini, join The Gilded Gentleman for a behind-the-scenes talk about their characters and their experiences performing in the show. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! High in the mountains of Bisbee, Arizona, stands a hotel built during the height of the copper boom — a grand structure meant to showcase wealth, innovation, and the promise of a growing Western city. When the Copper Queen Hotel opened in 1902, Bisbee was the largest urban center between St. Louis and San Francisco, alive with miners, rail travelers, and fortune-seekers. More than a century later, the Copper Queen still welcomes guests… but not all of them are living. Arizona's oldest continuously operating hotel has hosted icons like John Wayne, Marlon Brando, and Harry Houdini. Harry Houdini was the world's greatest escape artist and at the height of his powers was one of the world's most famous people. His unearthly ability to escape any prison and to break free of any bondage was matched only by his aggressive self-promotion. Anyone who tried to get in his way, rewrite his story, steal his thunder or question his abilities would find themselves in his crosshairs. When the burgeoning Spiritualist movement tried to make a fool of Houdini, he began a crusade that would last the rest of his life. And when his life was over, the question Houdini left the world was: could he make the greatest escape in history? This episode was originally published on October 24, 2024.
