In this episode of Reading With Your Kids, Jed welcomes picture book author Barb Rosenstock to talk about her captivating new title, Houdini's Library. Drawing on her deep love of history and storytelling, Barb shares how a tiny sign at the Library of Congress—"Houdini Collection" —sparked years of research and ultimately this book. Barb and Jed dive into the real Harry Houdini: not just the "handcuff king" and daring escape artist, but a relentless learner who built a massive working library of magic books. Barb explains that Houdini, who likely had only a second‑ or third‑grade education, used books to teach himself everything—from escapes to showmanship to public relations. They talk about how he studied older tricks, respected the magicians who came before him, and combined ideas to create something new—powerful lessons for kids about persistence, creativity, and hard work. Barb also highlights the team effort behind both Houdini's performances and her own books, reminding listeners that big achievements are almost never solo acts. She connects Houdini's discipline to athletes like Kobe Bryant: the first in the gym, the last to leave, still practicing even at the top. Later in the episode, Jed chats with 12‑year‑old author Shravya Khandelwal, whose middle grade novel The Curse of Judice blends suspense, demons, and a brave heroine named Sarah. Shravya talks about her love of spooky, supernatural stories, how curiosity pulls kids into mysteries, and what it feels like to be a young, published author balancing school, big dreams, and book promotion.

Magic and Medicines is BACK - just like the ooky-spooky ghosts summoned up by believers in this episode's topic - Spiritualism! As we discuss, philosophically speaking 'Spiritualism' is a big old tradition, involving any belief system rooted in concepts of souls, spirits, or supernatural forces. In the 19th century however, during the Second Great Awakening in upstate New York, Spiritualist ideas from a range of Revivalist traditions combined to make something new.Exploding in popularity following America's Civil War, then booming again in Britain after the Great War, new generations of 'Mediums' had come forth, channeling ghosts and cosmic forces in ways that would have been recognisable in Prophets, Holy Maids and Cunning Folk from the Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance eras.Which is to say, Necromancy was back after a rebrand - and so were its enemies, in the forms of debunkers, prosecutors, and many a Society of Psychical Research. From rapping tables to sudden splurges of ectoplasm, Spiritualist manifestos to Harry Houdini hunting severed hands hidden in delicate places, this one has it all.So, turn off the lights, light some candles, and let's all hold hands...Is there anybody there?!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?REGISTER FOR THE TALES OF SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOURProud members of the Dark Cast Network.Visit our website Join our Patreon Social media channels and sponsors Hosted on Acast. P. Lovecraft. On October 31, 1926, Harry Houdini — the world-famous escape artist and illusionist whose death-defying feats made him one of the first global superstars of modern entertainment — passed away at the age of 52. Born Erik Weisz to a poor immigrant family, Houdini rose from carnivals and dime museums to international fame through relentless discipline, physical endurance, and an obsession with mastering the impossible. He stunned audiences with escapes from straitjackets, locked safes, water-filled tanks, and prison cells, redefining magic as a test of human will as much as illusion. Beyond the stage, Houdini became a fierce skeptic, dedicating his later years to exposing fraudulent spiritualists and defending truth over spectacle. With unmatched showmanship, precision, and daring, Houdini transformed magic into a mass-culture phenomenon and set the standard for every escape artist who followed, leaving behind a legacy built on fearlessness, control, and the relentless pursuit of wonder. January 25, 1908. Harry Houdini is the most famous magician in America. He's known for his escapes – from handcuffs, boxes, jail cells, even a giant football. But the escape act is getting old, and ticket sales aren't what they used to be. And on this day, an under-capacity audience at the Columbia Theater in St. Louis is about to witness Houdini's most dangerous escape yet… from death itself. How did a Hungarian immigrant named Erik Weisz become Harry Houdini? And when his career was fading, how did Houdini embrace death to bring it back to life? Special thanks to our guest, Joe Posnanski, author of The Life and Afterlife of Harry Houdini. Additional thanks to San Diego magician Tom Interval for providing archival audio of Houdini. ** This episode originally aired Jan 25, 2021. The Sterling Opera House in Derby, Connecticut, is one of New England's most haunted and historically complex buildings. Opened in 1889 as a grand cultural landmark, it hosted performers like Harry Houdini, John Philip Sousa, and Amelia Earhart. Also, it hid a whole police station and jail directly beneath the stage. While audiences applauded upstairs, criminals sat locked in the cells below. In this episode, we explore the opera house's dramatic past, its ties to the Titanic, its rumored Houdini escape stunt, and the decades it sat abandoned. Then we dive into the paranormal activity that has made the Sterling a hotspot for investigators: voices in the basement, unexplained scratches, the balcony spirit known as “Andy,” and sightings of the White Lady.A deep look at Connecticut history, true crime, and one of the state's most active haunted locations. hauntedamericanhistory.comPatreon- https://www.patreon.com/hauntedamericanhistoryLINKS FOR MY DEBUT NOVEL, THE FORGOTTEN BOROUGHBarnes and Noble - https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-forgotten-borough-christopher-feinstein/1148274794?ean=9798319693334AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQPQD68SEbookGOOGLE: https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=S5WCEQAAQBAJ&pli=1KOBO: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-forgotten-borough-2?sId=a10cf8af-5fbd-475e-97c4-76966ec87994&ssId=DX3jihH_5_2bUeP1xoje_SMASHWORD: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1853316 !! Ghosts spoke. Women listened. Everything changed. It began with whispers in a dimly lit room. In the 1840s, the Fox Sisters―and the legions of mediums they inspired―ignited the Spiritualist movement that swept through Victorian parlors and presidential campaigns alike. Contacting the dead wasn't merely a parlor trick: It was a political statement, a declaration of self that still echoes. Séances attracted suffragists and scientists, skeptics and charlatans, giving women a voice in a society that often refused to hear them. But as Spiritualism surged, it also blurred the lines between faith, fraud, feminism, and financial opportunity, drawing figures as varied as Harry Houdini, Victoria Woodhull, and even modern self-help gurus into its ever-expanding orbit. From wartime séances to the rise of televangelists, from Victorian ghosts to goop-approved wellness rituals, When We Spoke to the Dead unearths the forgotten roots of today's obsession with manifestation, mysticism, and the power of belief. Exploring America's deep-seated hunger for the unseen―whether through politics, personal empowerment, or grief―this book traces how the supernatural, once condemned as heresy, became the ultimate commodity.Step inside the séance room. The new revival of the musical Ragtime, by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (book by Terrence McNally, based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow), is one of the big hits of the new Broadway season. Lincoln Center Theater has produced the latest rendition, and times have certainly changed since the musical's original Broadway production in 1998. The new revival makes the show's characters and issues even more relevant for our present day. Along with the fictional character Coalhouse Walker Jr. and the archetypal characters Father, Mother, and Younger Brother, the show features several celebrities and power players from turn-of-the-century New York. Anna Grace Barlow, who plays Broadway star Evelyn Nesbit, and Rodd Cyrus, who stars as iconic illusionist Harry Houdini, join The Gilded Gentleman for a behind-the-scenes talk about their characters and their experiences performing in the show. A spectacular graphic novel about the life and times of the legendary Fela Kuti—the Pan-African frontman, multi-instrumentalist, sociopolitical powerhouse, and father of Afrobeat. In Fela: Music Is the Weapon (Amistad, 2025), artist Jibola Fagbamiye and writer Conor McCreery team up to tell the remarkable origin story of one of Nigeria's most famous sons, the King of Afrobeat, Fela Kuti, who rose to superstardom with his band Africa 70 in the 1970s, during a charged political period for his nation. A once-in-a-lifetime musical talent who innovated the musical genre Afrobeat, Fela was also an outspoken critic of the Nigerian military regime. Fela focuses on a pivotal moment in his life, when he and his mother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the renowned Nigerian suffrage activist, were ruthlessly attacked in their own home by soldiers who suffered no repercussions for their violence. It also explores Fela's complex relationship with women, including his mother and Sandra Izsadore, the American singer and activist who revitalize and inspired him. Over the course of his life, Fela married 27 women, fathered numerous children, and founded the Kalakuta Republic commune, where he and his band lived, declaring themselves independent from military rule. As rich and original as its subject, Fela complements the historical with the surreal, featuring parallel dream world sequences, set between this realm and the next, in which Fela receives visions about his future and the dangerous path he will have to walk. Chronicling Fela's perilous journey to capture his destiny—to become the King of Afrobeat, and to advocate for Pan-African unity in the face of European imperialism and white supremacy—this masterful biographical graphic novel celebrates this enduring legend and his legacy, offering inspiration for our own troubled time. In this episode of The Chorus in the Chaos, Jack and Blake dive into one of America's most unusual and influential cult movements: the rise of spiritualism in the 19th century. Beginning with a biblical narrative—the chilling account of Saul and the Witch of Endor—the episode moves through the dramatic story of the Fox Sisters, the national craze for seances, and the cultural wounds left open by the Civil War. You'll discover how spiritualism promised comfort in a time of uncertainty, why it grew so quickly, and even how magician Harry Houdini became its most vocal opponent. Blending historical storytelling, cultural analysis, and theological clarity, this episode shines a light on a movement that still shapes modern (evil) ideas about mediums, ghosts, and “communicating with the dead.” Connect Website & Blog: www.chorusinthechaos.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chorusinthec... This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! High in the mountains of Bisbee, Arizona, stands a hotel built during the height of the copper boom — a grand structure meant to showcase wealth, innovation, and the promise of a growing Western city. When the Copper Queen Hotel opened in 1902, Bisbee was the largest urban center between St. Louis and San Francisco, alive with miners, rail travelers, and fortune-seekers. More than a century later, the Copper Queen still welcomes guests… but not all of them are living. Arizona's oldest continuously operating hotel has hosted icons like John Wayne, Marlon Brando, and Harry Houdini. Yet the names most often whispered through its halls belong to those who linger long after checkout: Julia Lowell, a young boy known as Billy, and the elusive “Smoking Man.” In this episode of The Grave Talks, we sit down with Jenna Lampinen to explore the legends, encounters, and unexplainable moments tied to one of Arizona's most famously haunted hotels. This is Part Two of our conversation. If you'd like information on staying at the hotel or paranormal investigations, contact Jenna Lampinen. Just in time for Halloween! In the first of two parts, we will weave a kind of dual biography: Harry Houdini and the spiritualist movement. While Houdini is perfecting his craft to become the world's most famous illusionist, scores of Americans and Europeans are being drawn into darkened rooms with mediums who can talk to the dead. Eventually, maybe inevitably, these two, the magician and the movement, will intersect and then clash. Back on this day in 1926 Harry Houdini preformed his final act. in the middle of his act, he collapsed in pain. A week later he died from inflammation in his abdamend.
Harry Houdini was the world's greatest escape artist and at the height of his powers was one of the world's most famous people. His unearthly ability to escape any prison and to break free of any bondage was matched only by his aggressive self-promotion. Anyone who tried to get in his way, rewrite his story, steal his thunder or question his abilities would find themselves in his crosshairs. When the burgeoning Spiritualist movement tried to make a fool of Houdini, he began a crusade that would last the rest of his life. And when his life was over, the question Houdini left the world was: could he make the greatest escape in history? This episode was originally published on October 24, 2024. Tear into tacos with Richard Butner as we discuss the early influence of Harlan Ellison, the time he went through the same trapdoor as Harry Houdini, which creative career he decided at age nine he was already too old to pursue, the paragraph from his recent collection I adored the most, the ways in which setting can be a character, why he defines his writerly self as being neither gardener nor architect but explorer, how he's attracted to writing about the type of characters Bruce Sterling once described as "criminally unemotional," what ambiguity truly means and why it matters, how meeting John Kessel changed his life, and much more.
This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! What if the greatest performers in history never really left the stage? At Belleville, Illinois' Haunted Lincoln Theater, some say that's exactly what's happening. Once a glittering landmark for vaudeville and stage magic, the Lincoln Theater hosted legends like Harry Houdini, Ginger Rogers, and The Marx Brothers. But long after the final curtain call, something strange began to happen. Staff and visitors alike began to report eerie sounds, phantom footsteps, cold spots—and full apparitions of long-dead performers. And then came the EVP. A voice, clear and chilling, captured saying just two words: “Time for magic.” Many believe it was Houdini himself, still performing decades after death. In this haunting episode of The Grave Talks, we sit down with renowned paranormal investigator Dale Kaczmarek, who has explored the Lincoln Theater's paranormal activity in depth. He shares real accounts, chilling recordings, and the unnerving energy that still clings to the theater's historic walls. This isn't just another haunted location—it's a living, breathing performance space where the past refuses to take a bow. Dale discusses his encounters with intelligent hauntings, residual energy, and the possibility that the spiritual echo of Houdini still commands attention from beyond the grave. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, the haunted Lincoln Theater will make you question what it means for a soul to leave the stage… or stay behind, waiting for the lights to rise. Is it history? Or is it still happening? Find out in this spine-tingling exploration of one of America's most haunted theaters. This is Part Two of our conversation.
