What Were You Wearing?: Rewriting the sexual assault narrative through a survivor-centric exhibit

“What were you wearing?” sounds like a question, but it often functions like a verdict. From the the 2026 Conference on Crimes Against Women in Dallas, we sit down with Dr. Mary Simmerling and Dr. Denise Huskins Quinn to unpack the What Were You Wearing exhibit, a traveling art installation that recreates the everyday outfits survivors wore during sexual assault and pairs them with stories, audio, and case artifacts. The result is confronting and deeply human, designed to put the work of bearing witness back on the community and to dismantle victim blaming in real time.Mary traces the exhibit back to a poem she wrote after her own assault at 18 and explains why art can reach places training manuals cannot. Denise shares the harrowing facts of her 2015 kidnapping and rape, and the second trauma that followed when police and media pushed a false narrative that the crime was fabricated. We talk about confirmation bias, interrogation tactics like the Reid technique, and the impossible “credibility tests” survivors get trapped in, from being judged as too emotional to not emotional enough. We also dig into what it means to make a problem “visible” when shame and silence keep so many stories hidden, and how the team thoughtfully includes well-known cases, including their work with the family of Gabby Petito. Finally, we preview a new companion installation built around another loaded question: “Why didn't she just leave?” and the life-or-death realities of domestic violence, resources, and lethality risk during separation.

In the early hours of July 31, 2022, a 2018 Toyota Camry slammed into a brick building in Strongsville, Ohio at nearly 100 mph. Two young men — Dominic Russo (20) and Davion Flanagan (19) — were killed instantly. The driver, 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla, survived. What followed was one of Ohio's most disturbing true crime cases of the decade.   In this deep-dive episode, we examine every angle of the Mackenzie Shirilla case: the toxic on-again, off-again relationship with Dominic Russo, the chilling vehicle black box data showing full acceleration with no braking, the dramatic bench trial, and the judge's scathing “literal hell on wheels” verdict. Mackenzie has always maintained it was either an accident or a medical emergency — but prosecutors argued it was intentional murder-suicide. Now, Netflix's explosive 2026 documentary has brought renewed attention and fresh debate to the case. We break down the evidence, the families' statements, Shirilla's prison interview, and the bigger questions about teenage rage, accountability, and justice. If you're a fan of true crime stories involving cars as weapons, murder-suicide cases, or intense courtroom drama like the Gabby Petito case or the Delphi Murders, this episode will hit hard. On Monday 8th August 2022, almost a year to the date of the Moab City Police stop of Gabby's white van, Gabby's mother, Nichole and step-father Jim Schmidt and Gabby's father, Joe and step-mother Tara Petito filed a notice of intent to sue Moab City Police in Utah. The lawsuit went ahead accusing the Police of “negligent failure” to first understand the law and enforce it. They also accuse Moab City Police of “wrongful death” stating that Gabby's “death was caused by their wrongful acts or neglect.” They are seeking $50m in damages. I cover Logan Paul's Aokigahara Forest incident, the time that the Bethunes caught Gabby Petito's van as they passed through Wyoming, and the time Sarah Funk unknowingly filmed evidence of bodies being hidden in Mitsero Red Lake in New York. All of these vloggers were just minding their own business (except for Logan Paul) and ended up filming something that would change the way the rest of the world viewed investigations. This one is a bit late because I edited the video myself. I'm learning about visuals, pacing, lighting, and all sorts of stuff about being on camera and making transitions and stuff while using relevant b roll. I also spent a lot of time on the sound design and the "look" of the video after researching the topics. Please let me know how I'm doing by leaving a comment. Hi loves, welcome into Invincible Her!  Trigger Warning, talk of Domestic Violence. Today's episode is one that honestly left both of us emotionally wrecked while researching it. Because the deeper you look into abuse cases… the more terrifying the pattern becomes. Not just the abuse itself. But the way systems, institutions, money, reputation, and power often seem designed to protect abusers while survivors are left traumatized, discredited, isolated… and afraid. We discuss the missed opportunities by law enforecment in the Gabby Petito case, the Epstein investigations and in every DV case we know or have been in, or heard about. One of the hardest truths to accept is this: The justice system is not always designed around protecting victims. Sometimes it's designed around protecting institutions. Protecting reputations. Protecting corporations. Protecting wealth. Protecting political connections. Protecting liability. Women who are victims of abuse face heightened scrutiny and are more likely to be blamed for staying, courts and the system question our credibility because we stayed or didtn report, survivors often delay reporting because they're terrified. And defense attorneys use delayed reporting against them. But trauma experts have explained for years that delayed reporting is COMMON in abuse cases. Fear delays people. Listen in and lets discuss some of the ways we can help change something, anything fpr all abuse victims.  We love you.  Stay safe. Outlouders, it’s Friday the 13th and the vibes are… chaotic. From Wuthering Heights to Finger Princesses to The Year of the Fire Horse and our weekly reccos, today's show is A LOT. We’re about to enter the Year of the Fire Horse and apparently it’s all action, freedom and breakthrough energy. Unless you’re a Pig (sorry, Holly Wainwright). Jessie Stephens and Clare Stephens are claiming this as their zodiac Super Bowl, but there’s a tiny historical footnote involving superstition, falling birth rates and the suggestion Fire Horses are “too wild.” Rude. And, the robots have taken over your child’s class photo. And no, we're not 'just' talking fixing gappy smiles. Add in AI-cheating uni students, 200-written-in-a-year AI romance novels by one author and its controversial use in true crime documentaries and suddenly we’re asking: are we outsourcing our brains? Or just evolving? Plus: the petty hills we will absolutely die on. Quiet carriages. TEABAG OUT. No, Coke Zero isn’t fine. Yes, you must wave. The list is long and, at times, unhinged. This is part two of my interview with Nichole Schmidt, the Mother of Gabby Petito. Most of you remember the Gabby Petito story as it unfolded on national news across this country. When the reports said this young woman, traveling in a van out west with her boyfriend, had not been heard from for days, I admit I thought he probably killed her. Unfortunately, my intuition was correct. I wanted to speak with Gabby's parents right away, but guessed it would never happen. But now it did. In two episodes, I speak with Gabby's mother, Nichole Schmidt, on the WHEN DATING HURTS podcast. QUICK NOTES: • You will hear us mention a documentary in our chat. It is the 2025 Gabby Petito documentary you can see on Netflix. It is worth your time. • Also, Gabby's parents were divorced when she was very young, but they stayed in close touch in an amicable fashion. Gabby's mother and father married others, and all four parents are involved in the Gabby Petito Foundation. The Gabby Petito Foundation is driving real change in the fight against domestic violence and missing persons. Inspired by Gabby's legacy, their mission is to take action on the front lines, partnering with organizations and equipping communities and first responders with the tools, training, and support they need to prevent and respond collectively to violence, and to protect those at risk. In this developing true crime investigation, the disappearance of nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard has sparked nationwide concern as authorities uncover troubling details surrounding her mother, Ashlee Buzzard. Investigators say Melodee had been isolated for years, kept away from both her maternal and paternal families, with Ashlee withdrawing her from school under the claim of homeschooling. When the school district reported months of failed check-ins, the situation escalated into a full-scale missing person case. The last confirmed sighting of Melodee traces back to early October, at the same time Ashlee embarked on a cross-country trip documented through phone footage and rental car records, forming a critical piece of the investigative timeline. As the case gained momentum, authorities learned that Melodee's paternal family had not seen her in over four years, and Ashlee's own mother had almost two years without contact, raising immediate red flags for a potential long-term concealment situation. The case shifted dramatically when a longtime friend of Ashlee's, known publicly as Tyler, claimed she confined him inside her home during a November visit, leading to Ashlee's arrest on false imprisonment charges. But those charges collapsed in court after Ashlee produced a secretly recorded audio clip that contradicted much of Tyler's account, prompting the judge to dismiss the case entirely. Despite that courtroom twist, the most urgent question remains: where is Melodee? Authorities executed multiple search warrants on Ashlee's residence, a storage unit, and the rented Malibu used on the trip, but no major breakthrough has been announced. The FBI has confirmed both surveillance and active involvement, mirroring strategies seen in high-profile missing child cases such as Gabby Petito and Harmony Montgomery. With dependency court proceedings sealed from public access and investigators cautious about what they release, the search for Melodee continues under intense scrutiny as the public waits for the next critical development in this unsettling case. #truecrime #breakingnews #melodeebuzzard #ashleebuzzard #missingperson #justice #FBIinvestigation #crimewatch #newsupdate #investigation Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? A haunting mystery unfolds in the disappearance of 9-year-old Melody Buzzard, a case that has gripped the true crime community and left investigators racing to uncover the truth. When Melody's school first raised alarms after she stopped showing up in August, few could imagine the dark spiral that would follow. Her mother, Ashley Buzzard, already struggling with mental health issues after losing her husband in a motorcycle accident, became increasingly isolated and erratic — cutting Melody off from friends, family, and the outside world. According to new reports from NewsNation, Ashley took Melody on a bizarre 3,000-mile cross-country trip to Nebraska and back. But only Ashley returned. Questions immediately mounted: What happened on that road trip? Where is Melody now? The timeline defies logic — three days, thousands of miles, no rest — and the growing concern over Ashley's mental state made the story even more alarming. Family members described her home as being in squalor, with no food and signs of serious neglect. Then came the breaking development: Ashley Buzzard was arrested, not initially for Melody's disappearance, but for false imprisonment after allegedly trapping a longtime friend, Tyler Brewer, inside her home. Brewer claimed Ashley became violent and incoherent — and even made shocking statements about what happened to Melody. Although police have not confirmed the contents of that conversation, investigators believe it may hold crucial clues. Now, a private investigator named Bill Garcia has joined the case, working pro bono for Melody's paternal family. As law enforcement and federal agencies dig deeper, this haunting case echoes the urgency and heartbreak of the Gabby Petito investigation. Every new clue, every timeline discrepancy, brings us closer to understanding what really happened to Melody Buzzard — and whether there's still hope for a miracle ending. #MelodyBuzzard #AshleyBuzzard #MissingChild #TrueCrimeNews #BreakingNews #Investigation #JusticeForMelody #NewsNation #MissingPersons #TrueCrime Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Authorities in Los Angeles are unraveling a chilling true crime case that began with the discovery of a 14-year-old girl's body inside the trunk—known as the “frunk”—of a Tesla owned by recording artist David, a popular social media personality with a massive following. The victim, identified as Celeste Rivas Hernandez, had been missing for months before her severely decomposed remains were found sealed inside a black trash bag in the front compartment of the car. Former FBI agent and true crime analyst Jennifer Coffindaffer breaks down the disturbing evidence and the unanswered questions surrounding this case. Was this an accident, a cover-up, or something far darker? Despite widespread reports that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has yet to determine the cause or manner of Celeste's death, the circumstances surrounding her discovery have left both investigators and the public horrified. Coffindaffer details how the Tesla was towed after being parked near David's home for an extended period, the odor of decay leading police to the grisly discovery. The body—reportedly weighing only 70 pounds due to severe decomposition—was found in a space barely large enough to fit golf clubs, suggesting possible dismemberment or deliberate concealment. Evidence was later seized from David's home under a search warrant, though investigators have not confirmed whether the crime occurred there. Experts in forensic entomology and anthropology are now examining the remains to determine how long Celeste had been dead and whether her injuries point to foul play. Comparisons have been made to other high-profile cases, including Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie, as investigators race to uncover what really happened to the young teen who reportedly first connected with David through social media when she was just 12 years old. This heartbreaking story exposes the dark side of online fame and exploitation, as questions mount about how a child's life ended in such a horrific way. Was it negligence, grooming, or a calculated act of violence? As new forensic results come to light, the world waits for justice for Celeste Rivas Hernandez. #CelesteRivasHernandez #TrueCrime #JenniferCoffindaffer #TeslaCase #BreakingNews #ForensicInvestigation #JusticeForCeleste #CrimeWatch #MissingPerson #TrueCrimeCommunity Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Break the Case: Former FBI Agent Breaks Down the Case of Missing Girl Melodee Buzzard

Dark Side of Wikipedia | True Crime & Dark History

Nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard should have been in a classroom in Lompoc, California. Instead, she's missing—and the story unfolding around her disappearance is hauntingly familiar to anyone who followed the Harmony Montgomery case. Former FBI agent and expert witness Jennifer Coffindaffer returns to Break the Case to dissect every known detail of this developing investigation, from the last verified sightings to the eerie gaps that have law enforcement scrambling for answers. Coffindaffer recounts how the case began not with a frantic 911 call, but with a report from the Lompoc Unified School District after Melodee hadn't attended school for months. The child's father died in a motorcycle crash when she was only six months old, and her mother, Ashley, appeared to have spiraled since. A chilling interview with Melodee's grandmother revealed a home in squalor, unfit for a child, and a family paralyzed by distance and dysfunction. By the time Child Protective Services intervened, it was already too late—Melodee had vanished. Law enforcement has released a crucial timeline. Melodee was last seen on October 7, 2025, at a California rental car agency, traveling with her mother, who reportedly planned a cross-country trip to Nebraska. Surveillance footage shows the child heavily clothed, possibly wearing a wig—a potential attempt to disguise her identity. As Coffindaffer points out, these details suggest intention, preparation, and deep secrecy. The FBI and Santa Barbara authorities have since executed search warrants, but so far, no confirmed trace of Melodee has been found. Through methodical breakdowns, Coffindaffer urges the public to share Melodee's image widely, drawing parallels to how social media once led to the discovery of Gabby Petito. Every share, every view, could be the one that brings a missing child home—or finally reveals the truth about what happened to her. #MelodeeBuzzard #MissingChild #TrueCrime #JenniferCoffindaffer #BreakTheCase #FBIInvestigation #HarmonyMontgomery #CPSFailure #GabbyPetito #TrueCrimeCommunity Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
