In conversation with Signe Wilkinson A Wall Street Journal correspondent for two decades, Neil King Jr. reported from more than 50 countries, served as the newspaper's chief diplomatic correspondent, national political reporter, and global economics editor in Washington, D.C., and was part of a Wall Street Journal team that earned a Pulitzer Prize for its 9/11 coverage. He formerly wrote for the Tampa Tribune and the Prague Post, and he is the founder and editor of Gotham Canoe, an online journal dedicated to exploring nature and nearby wildernesses. Inspired by his search for meaning amidst the nation's increasing political and social divides as well as by his own long battle with cancer, American Ramble follows King's revelatory 26-day walk from Washington, D.C., through Philadelphia and its surrounding environment, to New York's Central Park.  Signe Wilkinson is a widely syndicated cartoonist and the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning. Formerly based at The Philadelphia Inquirer, she is the recipient of three Overseas Press Club Awards. With Jonathan Zimmerman, she co-authored the book Free Speech: And Why You Should Give a Damn. In today's second hour, Dom welcomes in Dr. Elana Fishbein of No Left Turn in Education, who had her weekend event cancelled after joining the Dom Giordano Program to promote the event featuring former transgendered people undergoing a de-transitioning. After the cancellation, Fishbein reached back out to the Dom Giordano Program, who put her in touch with the great Pastor Bill Devlin. Within 23 minutes, Devlin, CEO of Octane Faith, was able to find a new venue for the event. Pastor Bill and Dr. Fishbein tell the story, and both explain why the message of the event was so important and needed to be spread. Then, Dom tells about another hit piece by WHYY on the Pennridge School District, using it as another example of the Democratic machine targeting parents whose only true priority is protecting their children, in spite of what the Leftist media tries to portray. Then, Dom tells about a new cartoon in the Inquirer by legendary Leftist cartoonist Signe Wilkinson which paints a brutally honest picture of the situation here in Philadelphia under the reign of hyper-progressive politicians such as District Attorney Larry Krasner. Then, Dom offers an update on polling in the Philadelphia mayoral race, then Dan takes over to offer up Dan Time with Dom. (Photo by Getty Images)

According to author Jonathan Zimmerman, in America we like to think we live in a land of liberty, where everyone can say whatever they want. Throughout our history, however, we have also been quick to censor people who offend or frighten us. We talk a good game about freedom of speech, then we turn around and deny it to others. Free speech allows us to criticize our leaders. It lets us consume the art, film, and literature we prefer. And, perhaps most importantly, it allows minorities to challenge the oppression they suffer. While any of us are censored, none of us are free. Join us when, historian Jonathan Zimmerman and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Signe Wilkinson discuss their perspective of free speech in America: who established it, who has denounced it, and who has risen to its defense, on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.

He was not surprised to learn that some parents would buy their student’s way into college; but he was surprised by the extent of it. “The parents have deprived their children of a very important rite of passage; the college application is the first time that an 18 year old takes their credentials into the world to see what the world says. Parents need to see how their children handle that.’ In this podcast, we look at how the lack of integrity on the part of many people involved in the admissions cheating contributed to the outcome.
