When patriot Mike rescues feminist Ricki from a post-Trump rally riot, the clash of opposites sets off sparks between them. But the gentleman giant refuses to leave the side of the spunky half-pint until he and his pickup truck deliver her home, safe and sound. Ricki attends the rally to scoop the racism of the Trump crowd in a blog post. But she's forced to spin a false narrative when her mistaken assumptions fail to materialize. When Ricki's lies get Mike doxed, and his construction worksite becomes the target of antifascist thugs, his righteous anger forces her to reckon with the truth. Ricki wants to fix the damage and regain Mike's trust. But that means facing the wrath of the liberal mobs. Will Ricki find the courage to leave the left for a lifetime of old-fashioned true love? The girlies review the most unhinged book they've ever read, in which a green-haired liberal is saved from Antifa by a proud MAGA man. Tracking down a copy of this book was a journey in and of itself, but it was worth it — we've since become enlightened to the evils of feminism, hair dye, tattoos, and the woke mind virus. Today on the show to kick off season 14 is a second-time guest: Kathy Iandoli, who we spoke to back in 2021 about her book on the legendary Aaliyah. And Kathy is back with a book she co-wrote with another legendary musician—Eve, who in a word, is just fabulous. In the book, we learn so much about this rapper, actress, talk show host, and multihyphenate, including that she felt cursed by being born with the name Eve—as in the first woman, Eve, according to the Bible. We talk today with Kathy about Eve's childhood in Philadelphia and how that molded her into the woman she is today; how she opened so many doors for women in music—rap specifically—as the First Lady of Ruff Ryderz, and what it was like to be a female in such a male-dominated industry; the biggest obstacle she faced in her 25-year career; and what she's really like when the spotlight is off of her. We also talk about Eve being 43 when she gave birth for the first time to her son, Wilde, and how that shifted her life. As she writes towards the end of Who's That Girl?, which is out September 17, “The ride isn't as rough anymore, and I'm enjoying every minute of it.” (“Who's That Girl?” by the way, is probably my favorite Eve song.) You know who Eve is—she's a Grammy-winning rapper and singer with singles like the aforementioned “Who's That Girl?,” “Let Me Blow Ya Mind,” and “Tambourine”; she's an actress who has appeared in films like Barbershop and television shows like Queens; she's a talk show host and has been on The Talk and The Real; and now she's an author. She's also a history maker, by the way—when she won the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” with Gwen Stefani, she was the first recipient ever of that award. I love that. Today on the show we have Eve's fantastic co-writer Kathy Iandoli, who has written everywhere from Vibe to The Source, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Cosmopolitan, and so much more. Kathy specializes in music, specifically hip-hop, and has written books like God Save the Queens: The Essential History of Women in Hip-Hop and the aforementioned Baby Girl: Better Known as Aaliyah, among others. She's also a professor of music business at New York University, a documentarian who has produced film projects on women in hip-hop for BBC and Netflix (including the award-winning Ladies First!), and one of my favorite guests. I'm so happy to have her back on. Who's That Girl?: A Memoir by Eve and Kathy Iandoli

In this Moxie by Proxy episode, we discuss the moxie of the women of Iceland through the camera lens of Pamela Hogan, Emmy award-winning filmmaker, journalist, and media executive. In her latest documentary, The Day Iceland Stood Still, Pamela and her collaborator acclaimed Icelandic filmmaker Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir, take us back to October 24, 1975, and the months leading up to that historic moment when 90 percent of Iceland's women took the “day off,” bringing the country to a standstill and catapulting Iceland to the world's superpower of gender equality. The story comes to life through interviews with the unstoppable women who planned and lived that day, interwoven with playful animation and evocative archival footage. Seven years in the making, the documentary is evidence of Pamela's filmmaking moxie and her belief in a riveting story. The film's release in 2024 celebrates the 50th anniversary of that day. Pamela describes the joy, grit, and determination of a diverse group of women as they sought to change the status quo, open up career opportunities, and promote wage parity. It's a fascinating examination of compromise, unifying messaging around social change, and grassroots organization. Ultimately, it's a story of how ordinary women managed to do the extraordinary.Pamela also describes the roots of her moxie in being raised by a single mother who was deeply involved in the women's equal rights movement in the 1970s United States. She is drawn to stories of women, stories that are fascinating and often overlooked. It is like whether a tree falling in the forest with no one around makes a sound; she believes if no one tells a person's story, it doesn't exist.Pamela's body of work includes Looks Like Laury Sounds Like Laury, Women, War & Peace series and its kick-off episode, I Came to Testify, and Wide Angle series on PBS. At Wide Angle, she was the Executive Producer working with global filmmakers on 70 hours of character-driven documentaries illuminating under-reported stories. While there, she developed Ladies First, an Emmy-award-winning film about women's leadership in post-genocide Rwanda, and Time for School, a longitudinal series that followed seven children in seven countries fighting the odds for a basic education.Pamela is recognized with the National Council for Research on Women Making a Difference for Women award. She is an adjunct professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and on the board of the International Center for Transitional Justice. This episode of Main Street Moxie is proudly sponsored by Elyse Harney Real Estate and Meadowscapes. BMS/ LADIES FIRST In today's episode, we salute the women of music, particularly in the genre of r&b. As beautiful as music can be, the business of music is often the opposite as it closely adopts the worst of society's traits. For many decades while women were celebrated in music, they still had to take a back seat to men. Fortunately, we have learned from the mistakes of the past, but we still have a way to go. This is 'Her' story, this is our story.Stay strong my sister.Featuring Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Dionne Warwick, and many more.Remember when music was Music!DJ Rhythm DeePLAYLIST1. I was invited to attend the "Women Standing in Oneness" expo at the New Community Church 2901 Puritan Detroit Michigan. It was my pleasure to attend as a vendor and record a live podcast at the event. It was a great networking event and opportunity to meet several outstanding women. I spoke to a few women to get their thoughts on the importance of sisterhood, gender roles, careers and motherhood. We also discussed how women are portrayed in society and respectability. There were quite a few entrepreneurs to explain how they were inspired to start a business. Great conversationsI am still looking for some help with audio and visual for this podcast. Fifty years ago, hip-hop emerged from a party in the rec room of a Bronx building—and a new sound was born--one with roots in African music, but with its own vibe and messaging. Since its first iterations, women have played significant roles in the creation and evolution of hip-hop: as rappers, DJs, producers, breakdancers, graffiti artists, scholars, journalists and more. Women have been key innovators and rebels in hip-hop, creating new sounds, pushing back against marginalization, and speaking up when others try to push them down.Michele Goodwin and her two guests break down the past, present and future of hip-hop, and the crucial role of women in this timeline. Michele is joined by: Drew Dixon: a producer, writer, activist, entrepreneur and former A&R executive, who spearheaded the recording of iconic songs like “American Boy” (Estelle f. Kanye West), “My Love Is Your Love” (Whitney Houston), “Maria Maria” (Carlos Santana), “I'll Be There For You” (Method Man f. Mary J. Blige) and many more. In January of 2020, Dixon appeared as the main subject of On the Record, a documentary released in May of 2020 on HBO Max that documents Dixon's decision to come forward in the #MeToo movement as a survivor of sexual harassment and assault in the music industry. Dixon is also featured in the 2023 Netflix documentary, Ladies First, and is set to appear on a special plenary on women and hip-hop at this year's annual National Women's Studies Association Conference, co-sponsored by Ms. A graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Business School, Dixon lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., with her two teenagers. Janell Hobson: a contributing editor at Ms., Hobson spearheaded iconic the Ms. series "Turning 50: Looking Back at the Women in Hip-Hop" and "Tubman 200” in honor of what would have been Harriet Tubman's 200th birthday. Hobson is a professor of women's, gender and sexuality studies at the University at Albany and the author of When God Lost Her Tongue: Historical Consciousness and the Black Feminist Imagination. (This episode is part of “Turning 50,” which recognizes the women who shaped hip-hop through articles in print and online, a public syllabus highlighting women and hip-hop, Spotify playlists, and digital conversations with “hip-hop feminists” in music, journalism and academics.)Support the show

In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, we are talking about the Netflix documentary series “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip Hop" out now on Netflix. Host Rebecca Lavoie interviews executive producers Raeshem Nijhon and Carri Twigg. Over the past five decades, hip hop has influenced everything from culture to fashion to politics. Its lyrics have tackled discrimination, sexism and violence, and gave voice to the authentic experiences of millions. But from those first mixtapes to streaming audio, women's contributions to hip hop have too often been marginalized. “Ladies First” recontextualizes their role in the genre's 50 years by reinserting them into the canon where they belong: at the center, from day one to present day. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched “Ladies First" yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.
