Today on Rounding the Bases, I'm joined by an entrepreneur who dared to ask what happens when care comes first…and spent a decade proving what happens when it does. Justin Ricklefs is Founder and CEO of The Guild Collective, a brand consultancy closing the gap between organizational beliefs and behaviors. His new book, Give A Damn, is a catalyst for leaders who want to capitalize on the most underutilized competitive advantage in modern business. It's anything but average. What does it take to go from getting fired at 27 to building a 6-figure side hustle? If you ask Colin Macintosh, the answer might surprise you. It's not the flashiest strategy or the biggest budget. It's something a lot of businesses have stopped doing altogether, genuinely caring about the people they serve. Colin is a CTO recruiter by day and side hustle entrepreneur by night. He got fired at 27, and somewhere between the pink slip, the margaritas, and a movie he'd watched, an idea was born. That idea became Sheets and Giggles, a eucalyptus bedsheets brand he built, scaled, and exited. But this episode is really about what came next. Dirt Cheap Compost is exactly the kind of side hustle I love most; simple, low cost, profitable, and scalable. No complicated tech stack, no outside funding. Just a real problem, a real market, and a flyer tucked inside a Halloween pumpkin. Sheets Resume is a different kind of story. An AI-powered resume builder doing thirty thousand resumes a month that sounds like an overnight success, until you find out about the years old Reddit post driving all that traffic. In this conversation Colin and I cover: The lessons from Sheets and Giggles that shaped everything that came after Why raising venture capital was a treadmill he'll never step on again How a $40K compost business was built with flyers and a seasonal pumpkin campaign How a Reddit post written in 2018 became the foundation of a 6-figure side hustle The customer experience rule that turns buyers into your most powerful sales people Colin genuinely gives a damn; about his customers, about the problems he's solving, and about the people he builds with. And as you'll hear today, that's not just good character ... it's good business. Do you like what you're hearing? Consider giving it a caffeinated thumbs up. We'd really appreciate it! Michael Smerconish speaks with University of Pennsylvania historian Jonathan Zimmerman about "Free Speech: And Why You Should Give a Damn," co-authored with Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Signe Wilkinson. They explore how free speech—once a cornerstone of liberal activism—has become politically polarized, with conservatives now claiming its mantle. Zimmerman argues that cultural shifts, campus controversies, and the rise of “cancel culture” have reshaped public discourse, often discouraging open debate. The conversation examines the tension between free speech and social justice, the impact of self-censorship, and why reclaiming robust dialogue is essential to addressing inequality. The Brands That Win Care More. In baseball, you can feel when a team cares. You walk into the clubhouse… You watch how players treat the equipment manager… You see the energy in batting practice. You know immediately. The same thing happens in business. Customers can feel when a company actually gives a damn. And when they do… they become your biggest promoters. In this episode of WINNERS FIND A WAY, Trent Clark sits down with Justin Ricklefs, founder of Guild Collective and author of Give a Damn, to talk about the real competitive advantage in business today: human connection. Justin shares how brands win when they stop shouting about their products… and start telling stories that connect with people. This conversation covers: • Why your brand story matters more than your marketing budget • The biggest mistake companies make when communicating with customers • Why Chick-fil-A, Nike, and Apple dominate through emotional connection • How great leaders build companies that people actually care about • The power of customer delight in a noisy marketplace As Justin says: "Your brand is the story people tell about you when you're not in the room." Winners Find a Way_ Guest-Justi… The question every leader should ask is simple: What story are people telling about your company? ABOUT THE GUEST Justin Ricklefs is the Founder and CEO of Guild Collective, a Human-First brand agency helping organizations grow through clarity, connection, and creativity. Before launching Guild Collective, Justin spent years working in sports organizations including the Kansas City Chiefs, helping build partnerships and revenue through strategic storytelling. I guess I have finally snapped and use this episode to vent my frustration at people in the country who are angry, but don't channel that anger into positive results. Getting angry at one another, losing focus, and shutting down civil discourse is exactly what anti-democratic grifters want the population to do. I question why we make it so easy for them. Problem solvers start by identifying the problem then move on to solutions. What happens when all your problem solvers are only good at identifying the problem? It's Mohsen Mahdawi Day on the podcast! Mohsen Mahdawi is a Palestinian organizer, human rights activist, co-founder of the Columbia Palestinian Student Union, and a damn good human.Mahdawi was a leading voice during the 2024 protests and the encampments at Columbia University. His leadership during those months and his support for a Free Palestine and an end to the Israeli occupation led to him being arrested in April of 2025 by ICE during a citizen interview in Vermont. Keep in mind that Mohsen is a lawful permanent U.S. resident and was arrested because he participated in peaceful protests. Thankfully, he was released two weeks later and gave a very clear statement as he walked out of jail: “I am saying it clear and loud to President Trump and his cabinet, I am not afraid of you.”Mahdawi's fight for justice is not over. He could face arrest again in the future. Please follow him and support him in any way that you can. I know for a fact that Mohsen won't stop—and we cannot stop—until Palestine is free.___________________✅ Follow Mohsen Mahdawi on Instagram.✊

Just a heads-up that in this episode we talk about late miscarriage. I am so grateful to Kelly for opening up about something that affects and speaks to so many of us - it's a beautiful conversation but if you're feeling tender around those issues for whatever reason, we've put in the time-stamps below in case you need to skip that bit. Kelly is a woman whose career has reflected the shifting tides of the British media landscape: from finding fame as a glamour model in the 90s, and being voted FHM's sexiest woman in the world on more than one occasion; she later made the move into presenting and acting. Now it's also just been revealed that she'll take part in this year's I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! In her first interview since that announcement, Kelly joins me for an honest and moving conversation about the pitfalls of fame, finding true love and she gives an extraordinarily vulnerable insight into her own fertility journey and her decision not to have children. Plus; how working on her own self-worth has brought her new happiness. What happens when gratitude becomes more than a feeling — when it turns into a shared responsibility? In this week's episode, we explore gratitude as a community practice — how remembering what sustains us can become a guide for how we lead, work, and live together. We talk about the real consequences of recent SNAP cuts, the vacuum they've created, and the people and organizations stepping up to make sure everyone is still fed. These stories reveal what we call gratitude in action — not just saying thank you, but showing up for one another in tangible, compassionate ways.We also unpack how this lens of collective gratitude could reshape how governments and businesses operate — replacing toxic individualism with mutual care, responsibility, and respect for the many unseen hands that sustain every community and workplace. If you've ever wondered what it looks like when compassion drives policy, leadership, and daily life — this conversation will give you a glimpse.

Send us a textOn the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are not identifying with any of the characters in this movie because they're all TERRIBLE! We watched the 1939 film from Victor Fleming, Gone with the Wind.We know this is a classic—that's why we watched it in the first place—but damn does this movie make it difficult to enjoy. I mean, the grandeur, the spectacle of it all is unassailable, but the Confederate apologia? Big time oof.On the other hand, if there's one thing you can take away from this film, it's that it'll inspire a heck of a conversation between your two intrepid podcast hosts.
