The Author Events Series presents Dr. Anthony Fauci | On Call: A Doctor's Journey in Public Service THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT! In Conversation with Dave Davies  Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous - and most revered - doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero. His memoir reaches back to his boyhood in Brooklyn, New York, and carries through decades of caring for critically ill patients, navigating the whirlpools of Washington politics, and behind-the-scenes advising and negotiating with seven presidents on key issues from global AIDS relief to infectious disease preparedness at home. ON CALL will be an inspiration for readers who admire and are grateful to him and for those who want to emulate him in public service. He is the embodiment of "speaking truth to power," with dignity and results. Dave Davies is a regular contributor and guest host for NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross. In addition to his work on Fresh Air, Davies spent more than three decades covering city government and state and local politics in Philadelphia, for WHYY-FM, KYW Newsradio and the Philadelphia Daily News. Davies is a graduate of the University of Texas. The 2024/25 Author Events Series is presented by Comcast. Because you love Author Events, please make a donation when you register for this event to ensure that this series continues to inspire Philadelphians. All tickets are non-refundable. That's the way I aspire to live.   I was born in 1973 in Philadelphia. My parents immigrated from Taipei and my dad's first job out of graduate school was in Philadelphia. I'm a die-hard Eagles fan and being raised in that city has shaped my identity. Hip-hop culture served as my first artistic influence. Run-DMC, Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys shaped how I created my own environment.   During the summer of O.J. trial I interned at the Philadelphia Daily News. I became hooked on journalism. I went on to another internship at the Des Moines Register and started my career as a business reporter for the Times of Trenton. I was the arts editor for the Honolulu Weekly and then the film critic for the Harrisburg Patriot-News.   Website design   I could see the end of the print industry so I decided to get a professional certificate in digital marketing from New York University. The college basketball world, especially in and around New York, lost one of its patron saints this past Saturday when Lou Carnesecca, the architect of the St. John's program and its rise to national prominence, passed away at 99. Over the next few days and weeks, you'll see many glowing tributes to Looie and his long, prosperous life, and deservedly so.In the first of a two-part retrospective, host Jaden Daly pays homage to the patron saint of the Johnnies alongside legendary college basketball writer Dick “Hoops” Weiss, who covered Lou's tenure in Queens from two perspectives, as an outsider with the Philadelphia Daily News and later as a columnist in the Big Apple for the New York Daily News. Join Jaden and Hoops as they look back on Looie's life, times, and inimitable machinations as he carved out his own niche in a pro sports town, holding court alongside the Knicks, Yankees, Giants and Mets as only he could in that era.Part two of the tribute, with former St. John's head coach Brian Mahoney, Lou's longtime assistant coach and right-hand man before succeeding him in 1992, will be released next week.

Episode Notes S5E41 -- Join us as we dive into the mind of the longest-serving, first-time, non-violent offender in the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the time of his release George "Cowboy" Martorano.. He'll be telling us tales from his botched trial to his 32 years of a life sentence served and much much more. In 1984, on the advice of his attorney Robert Simone, Martorano pleaded guilty to 19 counts of drug possession and distribution. Martorano was subsequently advised by both the prosecution and the judge, John Berne Hannum, that this plea could result in a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. The prosecution, however, had only recommended a sentence of from 40 to 54 months. On September 20, 1984, Martorano was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, the longest prison term ever imposed on a first-time non-violent offender in American history. Louis Pichini, a prosecutor with the U.S. Organized Crime Task Force, pressured George Martorano for information on the Philadelphia Mafia. But Martorano has always denied having any detailed knowledge of his father's business dealings. Judge Hannum's excessive sentence was a part of this pressure. Prior to Martorano's sentencing, his trial counsel, Robert Simone, was indicted on tax evasion charges. Again, before sentence was imposed in the Martorano case, Judge Hannum testified as a character witness for Simone. An article appeared in the Philadelphia Daily News criticizing the judge and called his testimony "highly unusual". Martorano stated in subsequent appeals that Judge Hannum should have recused himself from his case prior to imposing sentence. Martorano holds the title of longest-serving, first-time, non-violent offender in federal custody.[1] He claims the sentencing judge gave the unprecedented term to pressure him to inform on his father and other mob bosses.[4] Martorano distinguished himself during his time in federal prison. In addition to being a "model" prisoner, Martorano: prevented the hijacking of an aircraft by prisoners while in transit from Philadelphia to Oklahoma following the loss of his 33rd appeal. This incident has been documented by the FBI and Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) and was called "extraordinary" by D.C. It's not every day that you have the honor of meeting a national treasure who is creating new art genres and movements to help us expand our imagination and stretch our understanding of what's possible. First inspired by Marvel and DC comics in his youth, Dr. Walter D. Greason is the distinguished DeWitt Wallace Professor in the Department of History at Macalester College.  Wondering why there weren't Black people in the futures presented in classic sci-fi stories, Walter became one of the founders of Afrofuturism, a new lens to re-imagine a tomorrow that's inclusive for all. He also gave the world the “Wakanda Syllabus” and helped bring the fictional city of Wakanda to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Blank Panther blockbuster films! On December 15, 1997, ten-day-old Delimar Vera died in a tragic housefire when the Philadelphia home of Luz Cuevas and Pedro Vera caught fire unexpectedly. After a brief investigation, the fire department identified a faulty heater as the cause of the fire and deemed the baby's death an accident and claimed that the girl's remains had been completely destroyed in the blaze. Luz Cuevas was skeptical of their explanation and struggled to accept her daughter's death.Six years after the fire, Luz was at a party where she ran into Pedro's cousin, whom she hadn't seen in several years. The woman, Carolyn Correa, had with her a little girl named Aaliyah, whom she claimed was her daughter, though Luz didn't remember her having children or being pregnant six years earlier. Even more suspicious was that six-year-old Aaliyah bore a striking resemblance to Luz herself and she couldn't shake the feeling that Aaliyah was in fact her own supposedly dead daughter, Delimar. Had Luz Cuevas been right all along? Had Delimar somehow managed to survive the fire? And if so, why was she now in the custody of a strange woman she hadn't seen in six years?Thank you to the incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBenson, Clea, and Rusty Pray. 1997. This episode will cover the murder of Denise Rudy who was killed by Sadiki Garden in December of 1999.  His appeal brought up questions of judicial discretion, jury instruction, and the validity of eyewitness identification especially when it's cross-racial identification.   As with many cases, we don't know that much about the victim, but she was a mother of four who didn't get to spend Christmas with her children that year, or even meet grandchildren in the future to spend Christmas with them. that was taken away from her, her family, and the holidays were tarnished for the family forever because of a person's decision to shoot a woman during an attempted robbery. Additionally, to be covered in a future episode, someone charged along with Garden had walked away from a work release program, and much of the coverage from this trial stemmed from this in questioning the sentencing of that person to a work release program.   Photo Credit: AJEL - Pixabay  Paypal  Buy Me A Coffee - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/rondajeffe9    Danger on Delmarva https://www.facebook.com/DangeronDelmarva  or search for @dangerondelmarva on Facebook https://twitter.com/DangeronD?s=09   DangerinDelaware@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/DangeronDelmarva  or search for @dangerondelmarva on Facebook https://twitter.com/DangeronD?s=09 Danger on Delmarva - YouTube State of Delaware v. On August 19, 1986, a curious news item appeared in the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader regarding the home of West Pittston, PA family Jack and Janet Smurl. The couple claimed, for more than eighteen months their home had been a battleground of spiritual warfare that included everything from ghosts wandering the halls and tormenting the family dog to demons attacking the children and even sexually assaulting the adults in the house. The article in the Times Leader began a weeks-long fascination with the family and their ordeal, drawing reporters from all over Pennsylvania and the surrounding states, and eventually attracting the attention of self-proclaimed demonologist and psychic medium Ed and Lorraine Warren. At first, the Smurls' claims of demonic infestation were taken seriously by the church, many members of the press, and countless of the Smurls neighbors. As time wore on, however, the inability of both the Smurls and the Warren's to produce any evidence of their supposed haunting led many to believe the claims were just a hoax perpetrated by the family for attention and fame. Joining Les Bowen today is Paul Domowitch, Les's former Philadelphia Eagles coverage tag-team partner with the Philadelphia Daily News and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Domo writes these days for The 33rd Team, which this week produced a project assessing the Hall of Fame chances of some current players, and Domo wrote about the Eagles with the best HOF cases. Domo is the lone Hall of Fame voter for Philadelphia, so his thoughts are extremely relevant. One player who will be in consideration once he is eligible, is right tackle Lane Johnson. Is Johnson deserving of being in the Hall of Fame? Les also wants to talk to Domo about Paul's upcoming A2D Radio show, which launches in a few weeks. Les thinks Domo Nation would be a fine show name, but Paul might have other ideas. Most fans have very little idea how Hall Of Fame selection really works, so we're going to go into that, what all it takes to get a player into one of those yellow sport coats. Domo also wrote recently about how NIL and the transfer portal might push college coaches toward the NFL — but the NFL has learned to be a bit leery of some of those guys. Around here, that subject usually includes mention of Chip Kelly, who apparently remains on DeSean Jackson's mind, a decade after they parted ways. Last week Les introduced but didn't really get to discuss the topic of which Eagles rookie might have the biggest impact. Camp is now less than three weeks away, so he hopes to cover that this time around.

On the first episode of “Bowen on the Birds,” Les Bowen gives his thoughts regarding the Philadelphia Eagles' 2023 schedule. The schedule is tougher; will coach Nick Sirianni have a tougher time with this year's schedule in his third season as the Eagles' head coach? How will the veterans on this team handle the schedule? Will injuries play a factor? History plays a role, the Cincinnati Bengals, last year began in a rough patch before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Title Game. Can the Super Bowl runners-up make a deep run again? Joining Les is Paul Domowitch, an NFL writer previously of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News. Domowitch has covered the Eagles, and the NFL for nearly 45 years. Domowitch is a contributor for The 33rd Team. Les also gives his first impressions about the Eagles' newest coordinators, Brian Johnson and Sean Desai. How will they incorporate the current and incoming talent going into this season? New videos of Eagles first-round pick Jalen Carter have surfaced, and it appears that he is in much better shape than he was during his pro day workout earlier in the year. How will the 9th overall pick fare in his rookie season? Speaking of first-round picks, DeVonta Smith continues to mess with Philadelphia fans after the Sixers fell to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Playoffs. Smith, a Celtics fan, chirps to 76ers fans on Twitter during the series.

In July of 2015, an 18-year-old woman ran from her parents' New Jersey home during an argument, and never returned. Just hours after being captured on a security camera heading in the direction of the woods, her remains were recovered on a nearby train track. Although it appeared, at first glance, that she had been hit by a train and killed, her family believes that this was a cover up for her murder. This is the story of Tiffany Valiante. Today I talked to Ellen Cassedy about her new book  Working 9 to 5: A Women's Movement, a Labor Union, and the Iconic Movie (Chicago Review Press, 2022). Many people may identify 9 to 5 with the comic film starring Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin or perhaps only know Parton's hit song that served as its theme. But 9 to 5 wasn't just a comic film—it was a movement built by Ellen Cassedy and her friends. Ten office workers in Boston started out sitting in a circle and sharing the problems they encountered on the job. In a few short years, they had built a nationwide movement that united people of diverse races, classes, and ages. They took on the corporate titans. They leafleted and filed lawsuits and started a woman-led union. They won millions of dollars in back pay and helped make sexual harassment and pregnancy discrimination illegal. The women office workers who rose up to win rights and respect on the job transformed workplaces throughout America. And along the way came Dolly Parton's toe-tapping song and a hit movie inspired by their work. Working 9 to 5 is a lively, informative, firsthand account packed with practical organizing lore that will embolden anyone striving for fair treatment. Ellen Cassedy was a founder of the 9 to 5 organization in 1973. She is the coauthor with Karen Nussbaum of 9 to 5: The Working Woman's Guide to Office Survival and with Ellen Bravo of The 9 to 5 Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment. Take a spin around the Cleveland sports scene with Bud Shaw, who spent nearly 27 years there as a columnist with a keen and irreverent eye. Bud puts us with the 1997 Indians when they had World Series champagne on ice. Oops. He recounts a confrontation with glowering Albert Belle, which prompted sage advice from ready-for-battle baseball scribe Paul Hoynes. And Bud recalls covering the tragic boating accident that killed pitchers Tim Crews and Steve Olin. We also hear about a young LeBron James, the same old, same old Browns, and tales from Bud's media years before arriving in northeast Ohio. Those days include a prison visit with Denny McLain and Motoball in Moscow. Yes, Motoball. What?   Shaw was a sports columnist for The Plain Dealer, and later Cleveland.com, from 1991 until he accepted a voluntary buyout in 2018. He then worked for WKYC.com in Cleveland that year before retiring. He won numerous Associated Press Sports Editor awards, including a top 10 in column writing, during his career. His story about the 1993 deaths of Crews and Olin received an honorable mention selection in the “Best American Sportswriting” series.   Bud covered more than a dozen Super Bowls and World Series, six Olympic Games, eight Masters, the PGA and U.S. Open golf championships, the Ryder Cup, five Indianapolis 500s, the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup Finals, the Daytona 500, the Final Four, and the U.S. Open tennis tournament.   Before coming to Cleveland, Bud worked as bureau chief and columnist in Chicago and Detroit for The National Sports Daily from 1989-91. His career also included reporting stints at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (1984-89), the San Diego Union-Tribune (1982-84), the Philadelphia Daily News (1980-82), the Trenton (N.J.) Times (1978-80), the Johnstown (Pa.) Tribune Democrat (1977-78), and the Kittanning (Pa.) Leader Times (1976-77).
