Episode 114, I talked to Dave Fajman from Smugglers Coffee about how he started the business and how he got involved with coffee and roasting. I ask what Dave did before roasting and becoming the owner of Smugglers Coffee. I then ask about what is harder, the roasting or the business side of Smugglers Coffee. I find out about the group of people working for Smugglers and the first coffee that they came up with. I find out the difference between the different coffee's they sell there. I then find out how they get the coffee sold from the business and the different states Dave has done conventions and markets at. We talk D and D, Star Wars, disc golfing, designing the labels and merch, hot sauce, marshmallows, root beer and more !!! The new opening theme music is "Shark Ethic" which was made by Most Precious Blood from Trustkill Records. Josh Grabelle who runs Trustkill Records, has given me permission to use to the song for my opening music. All permission was given to use it. This year TIHD returned to not only participate, but to host a session on running a D&D group for kids, but running a camp for them during summer break. “The satyr is the fun-bringer, and that is really what we wanted the spirit of this place to be. A poetic hub of fun.” - Tobias Cichon, Rabid Brewing co-founderThe large, hand-painted mural above the Rabid Brewing taproom in Homewood, Illinois, depicts a mythical origin story for beer in which fantastical creatures pour the golden elixir out for the denizens of this imaginary world. Fantasy and mythology drive much of what husband and wife team Tobias Cichon and Raiye Rosado do at Rabid Brewing. As the brewery celebrates their 4th anniversary, I sat down with the pair to talk about the passion behind their brewery, the mythological backstories behind their beers, and the sense of adventure the keeps them pursuing their dream.I also spoke with Annabelle Popa, the artist behind the taproom mural and many other accents around the brewery.Episode Timeline::00-5:45 - Introduction5:45-13:17 - Raiye & Tobias - Rabid background and taproom artwork13:17-20:40 - Annabelle Popa - Creating art for Rabid Brewing20:40-27:10 - Raiye & Tobias - Rabid's cohesive mythology and the Feast of the Goat Queen27:10-34:11 - Raiye & Tobias - Dwarves of Doom and Rabid's use of single origin cacao from bean to bar chocolate maker Ethereal Confections34:11-38:29 - Raiye & Tobias - The significance of the Halloween season and the story Rabid Brewing is telling 38:29-39:12 - ConclusionEpisode Notes:Beers discussed in this episode include Rabid Brewing Horus Imperial IPA, Dwarves of Doom Imperial Stout with Smugglers Coffee and Ethereal Confections cacao, and Shadowstepper Milk Stout with lactose and Ethereal Confections cacao.Other beers mentioned include Three Floyds Apocalypse Cow and Alpha King.Chocolate and cacao discussed in this episode included Ethereal Confections Ecuador and Dominican Republic. You can find examples of Annabelle Popa's artwork and get in touch about working with her at her website. You can read more about Raiye's dinosaur beer deliveries in my article for The Reporter's Notebook here. The music for this episode was sampled from an instrumental version of the song “Umbrella” written and performed by indie folk musician Anna ps from her 2016 album of the same name. You can find out more about Anna and get in touch about booking her for a show at her website.Guests:Raiye Rosado & Tobias Cichon are the husband and wife co-founders of Rabid Brewing. They began dating in 2010, and Raiye promptly introduced Tobias to good beer. Their wedding was a Halloween costume party. The pair began homebrewing together, and decided to open a brewery after getting married. Rabid Brewing opened on October 13, 2017. Annabelle Popa is a freelance Illustrator and Muralist living in the Hudson Valley. Growing up in Queens and having a lack of the natural world instilled an incessant longing for magic, nature, and tall tales. Creating comics, murals, paintings, and costumes are her outlet to weave personal mythologies together and reach undiscovered worlds. Gaze long into the work but take care - they gaze back.
This week Joe talks to Dave Fajman of Smugglers Coffee. Dave and Joe talk about the path that led Dave to coffee, metal, and D&D. If you don't know what D&D is, send Joe a message and ask. He knows. He is a class 1 Dragon Born and just acquired some Cinderpetals and he's been bragging about his Sword of Kas. Joe and Dave talk about the parallel paths of being a beer brewer and coffee roaster. They talk about old influences: Jethro Tull, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and more. Listen and find out if you are team "Ride the Lighting" or "Master of Puppets." We sprinkle in some Misfits talk (you have to mention Evil Elvis sometimes) and then get into talking about Dungeons and Dragons and it's influences. Metal and Creativity and D&D go hand in hand. Find out how. Got any stories of your own? Call and leave a message: 1-812-963-4727
The 2nd show with our good friends Nicole and Sabine of the Pinkshots Podcast got a bit crazy, as we expected, and we’re delighted. Fueled again by some amazing beer from Burn ‘Em Brewing, Cowboy, Paulie G, and Dougy Fresh kick back with the ladies and talk sex, a little beer . . . but mostly sex. Any chance of being “Family Friendly” went out the window at about the two-minute mark. Joining the gang once again at Burn ‘Em was Jerry Huener, Burn ‘Em founder, Blake Murray (when he wasn’t running around trying to keep up with a big Saturday crowd), and Mr. Emmit Muckles. They touch on fetishes(no pun intended), nude vacations, bad dates, and the possible need for an intervention for Nicole. Keep the kids far away from the speakers this week, but a must for those who need a good laugh. Check out the Pinkshots Facebook page and tune into their shows for more female insight on life . . . and alcohol. And be sure to get your butt over to Burn ‘Em Brewing to grab yourself a few fine pints of craft goodness. Tell ‘em the Pigs sent you. Cheers! https://www.facebook.com/pinkshotspodcast/ www.burnembrewing.com Shout outs in this week’s episode include: New Glarus Brewing Co., Rick Greenless; Smugglers Coffee; Round Town Brewery; and the Elm Street Brewing Co. Digital Fix - #004 W/ Dave Fajman of Smugglers Coffee by Alan Myszkowski
Dougy Fresh, Pauly G., and Cowboy spent a fun filled afternoon at Burn ‘Em Brewing in Michigan City with a couple beautiful ladies, Nicole Kehoe and Sabine Hankiewicz of The Pink Shots Podcast, who turned out to be as delightfully inappropriate as The Pigs. One of the Burn ‘Em Founding Fathers, Blake Murray, hosted the gathering and provided some of the many delectable brews Burn ‘Em has to offer and delivered some of the low down on the humble beginnings of the brewery and what’s to come next from this quickly growing local hot spot. Also joining in on the mic for the afternoon was Mr. Jerry Huener as well as some background commentary from Sabine’s husband and Pink Shots bodyguard, Mr. Emmitt Muckles, who only knows how to live the billionaire lifestyle. Tune in for the antics and get your butt to Burn ‘em for some great craft beer and entertainment such as their Tuesday night Vinyl Night hosted by the one and only Robert Rolfe Feddersen. I learned a lot this episode. Dave Fajman from Smugglers Coffee tells me all about the ins and outs of creating barrel aged coffees. We also get into craft beers, punk rock, and the woes of hard water. This was a really fun episode for me and I had a blast getting to know Dave!
