Blessings and curses. That is the dominant theme of our Parsha. We read the admonition of Deuteronomy – 98 bone-chilling curses that will befall our people in the event that we repudiate our covenant with God. About This Episode: Christopher Gaze is the founder and artistic director of Bard on the Beach, Vancouver's beloved outdoor Shakespeare festival now in its 37th season. In this conversation, Christopher talks with Phil about how a $35,000 co-op startup in 1990 grew into one of Canada's largest theatre companies, drawing 80,000 people a season to a pair of tented stages in Vanier Park overlooking English Bay and the mountains beyond. This episode explores: How Bard on the Beach began in 1990 with $35,000, a Canada Council Explorations Grant, and a company of 27 co-op members The influence of mentor Douglas Campbell: his force field in the audition room, his wilderness years, and why his name is on Bard's second stage Programming a season: from Douglas casually suggesting Twelfth Night over the phone to today's collaborative circle of senior theatre practitioners Goblin Oedipus, Antigone, and how Christopher was famously wrong about Goblin Macbeth (it sold out before opening night) And much more!

Matthijs Van Mierlo maakt video's over kunst. At first glance, Ashtanga Yoga may look like a simple sequence of postures. But beneath the surface lies a subtle framework that carries the entire method: Tristhāna, the threefold support of breath, posture, and gaze. In this episode, Kino and Tim explore the deeper meaning of Tristhāna. The word comes from Sanskrit, with tri meaning "three" and sthāna meaning "place" or "support." These three abodes are not just techniques. They are thresholds that guide the practitioner from gross sensation into subtle awareness. Breath is the golden thread linking body and mind. Posture is the seat that establishes presence. Gaze is the discipline that steadies perception. Together, they guide us inward, moving us from the visible body into the subtle body, from surface sensation into deeper stillness. Kino and Tim also reflect on how these pillars extend beyond the mat. Breath becomes a refuge, posture teaches resilience, and gaze becomes discernment. To practice Ashtanga is to realize that we are never not practicing. Yoga becomes alive in every moment of our lives. Listen in to explore how the three pillars of Tristhāna support the movement from external to internal, from gross to subtle, and discover how yoga is not just something you do, but something you live. Practice with Kino, Tim, and the Omstars community at Omstars.com, where you'll find guided Ashtanga Yoga classes, philosophy, meditation, and practice support for every stage of your path.

In this episode, I reflect on Hermann Hesse, Carl Jung, psychotherapy, and the double-edged sword of introspection. Drawing from an essay on Hesse and a concern raised by JF Martel on Weird Studies, I explore how the search for authenticity can become either a path toward responsibility or a trail of tears for the people around us. As a Four on the Enneagram, this tension speaks deeply to me: the longing for depth, beauty, and self-understanding is real, but so is the danger of turning inwardness into self-absorption. This is a reflection on shadow, therapy, narcissism, and why true self-knowledge has to return us to love, repair, and responsibility.

What you keep your eyes on will eventually shape your faith. In this message from our From the Vine series, Cynthia teaches on faithfulness through the lens of “gaze versus glance.” So often, we give long attention to fear, temptation, pressure, grief, anxiety, comparison, and the enemy's lies, while only glancing at the truth of God's Word. But Jesus calls us to remain connected to Him, because apart from Him we can do nothing. Looking at John 15, Galatians 5, Genesis 3, 2 Samuel 11, Judas' betrayal, 2 Timothy 1:7, and Hebrews 12, this message reminds us that faith grows when our gaze stays fixed on God. Fear will try to paralyze us, sin will try to distract us, and life will try to overwhelm us, but Jesus is still the author and perfecter of our faith. If you have been walking through fear, distraction, temptation, or heaviness, this message will encourage you to lift your eyes again and keep your gaze on Christ. Scriptures: John 15:5, Galatians 5:22-23, Genesis 3:1-7, 2 Samuel 11, 2 Timothy 1:7, Hebrews 12:1-3   New here or made a decision to follow Jesus today? We would love to connect with you. Send us Fan MailThis episode started with an accident — or what felt like one.I went to the eye doctor, had my eyes dilated, and sat down to write my newsletter only to find I couldn't see my computer screen. So I closed my eyes, started voice-dictating, and something unexpected happened: I dropped inward in a way I rarely do during a regular workday. The forced pause became a teaching. That experience sent me deep into a topic I've been wanting to explore for a while — the relationship between pitta dosha and the eyes, and what it means not just physically but philosophically when we learn to rest the outward gaze. What we cover:Alochaka pitta — the subdosha of pitta located in the eyes, responsible not just for physical sight but for perception, discernment, and the ability to distinguish what is right from what is wrong. When it goes out of balance, the effects show up in both the body and the mind. Why summer intensifies eye strain — summer is pitta season, and the combination of environmental heat and the fire already present in our eyes means alochaka pitta is especially vulnerable right nowScreen time and the eyes — the research on digital eye strain, blue light, reduced blink rate, and circadian disruption — and how Ayurveda would frame all of it as pitta and vata aggravation through the misuse of the sense organsPractices to support eye health — eye palming, feeding the vision with natural beauty and greenery, herbal compresses with chamomile, rose, lavender, and eyebright, rose water, netra basti, netra suddhi, and the 20-20-20 ruleHerbs for the eyes — triphala internally and externally, its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and what the research shows, as well as a gentle honest look at eyebright's traditional use and emerging sciencePitta vision and the world — the gift of pitta's focused, forward-moving gaze that drives action and builds things — and the shadow of what happens when prana is always streaming outward through the eyes without restVata vs. pitta vision — why vata carries the intuitive, spirit-connected inner vision while pitta carries the focused, purposeful worldly gaze — and why we need bothPratyahara — the fifth limb of yoga as genuine eye medicine. The monthly series called "What Are the Sisters Reading?" continues with Sister Catherine Lucia Phoebe, FSP, who shares about two books: "God for All Days," by Christian de Chergé, which is about a prior of the Trappist community of Our Lady of Atlas in Algeria who was assassinated with six of his fellow monks in 1996. Drawn from the last two years of his life, it offers deep insights into the monastic search for God in community during tumultuous times.   The second book – "Born from the Gaze of God" by Christophe Lebreto – is about the youngest of seven Trappist monks assassinated in Algeria by terrorists in 1996. In the journal that he wrote, he shares moving examples of the light and darkness inherent in the human condition. Alright, welcome back to Žižek & So On. This week continues our NEW SERIES on the systematic aspects of Žižek's thought & we're taking a look at the work of philosopher Berta M. Pérez focusing on her essay “The Courage to Hold onto a Paradox” and her book The Dialectical Gaze: Hegel with Žižek. Why does every apparently coherent order depend on an excluded element?  WTF is the transcendental turn? Along the way we return to some of Žižek's key examples: Lévi-Strauss's divided village, Hegel's monarch as the empty point of decision, & the strange loop of subject and substance. The European Graduate School are running a Leading Thinkers Course on Slavoj Žižek and I know a lot of our listeners are attending the course which is exciting and a big thanks to all of you who have been reaching out to us over the course of the series so far! The course runs for ten weeks or so with Frank Ruda, Mladen Dolar, Adrian Johnston, Robert Pfaller, Zahi Zalloua, Dany Nobus, Alenka Zupančič, Berta Perez, and at the end Žižek…on…himself….so we're going to be doing these episodes alongside the course.Up next we stay with Žižek's Hegel, but move from Pérez's account of the Dialectical Gaze to the early Žižek of The Most Sublime Hysteric with Frank Ruda.See you in Paris,Ž&…

Behavioral Tells: Read the Hidden Signals Behind Every Action. What People Reveal Without Saying a Word. (How to be More Likable and Charismatic Book 46) By Patrick King https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DYKN5V6H Unlock the hidden code behind human behavior—before it costs you opportunities, relationships, and influence. Most people think they're good at reading others. They're not. They project, assume, and misinterpret—then wonder why conversations stall, deals fall apart, and signals get missed. Behavioral Tells cuts through the noise and shows you what people are actually communicating beneath the surface. From bestselling author Patrick King, this is your field guide to decoding people in real time—without guesswork, overthinking, or relying on clichés like “just trust your gut.” You'll learn how perception quietly distorts everything you see—and how to fix it fast. How perceptual biases like the halo effect and projection silently sabotage your judgment The three perceptual positions that instantly sharpen your perspective in any interaction Why your expectations shape what you notice—and how to break that loop Practical ways to improve perceptual accuracy so you stop misreading people But reading people isn't just about what you see. It's about what you notice, how you interpret it, and how you respond in the moment. This book takes you deeper—into emotions, group dynamics, language patterns, and subtle behavioral signals most people completely miss. The ABC model for understanding why people behave the way they do Emotional granularity so you can distinguish nuance, not just “happy vs. angry” The SUE framework for asking questions that reveal truth without resistance How tone, word choice, and “meta-programs” expose hidden motivations Along the way, you'll learn why body language alone can mislead you, how attention flows in groups, and what everyday behaviors—like walking style, clothing, and even food choices—quietly reveal. Bottom line: This is not theory. It's a toolkit. Navigate conversations with precision Spot inconsistencies before they become problems Understand people faster than they understand themselves

How We Heard It
We shoot the moon with these lunar songs

How We Heard It

If you go looking for songs about the moon, they'll start falling out of the sky. Moon-themed songs are some of the oldest in recorded history as well as some of the most recent to hit the charts. They can be found connected to everything from organized religion to witchcraft, they come from all parts of the planet, and they show up in every genre of music. In honor of the 2026 blue moon, the hosts of "How We Heard It" embarked on a quest to find songs about the moon, and they were overwhelmed - not just by the sheer number of songs they found, but also by the extensive breadth of the songs. Earth's closest companion inspires all manner of emotions. And when you project your feelings on the moon, it reflects and enhances your mood. Are you feeling amorous? Lonely? Anxious? Content? Mysterious? Grounded? Gaze upon the moon and your feelings will intensify. In song, the moon can be blue, red, pink, silver and orange. It can be full, new, half ... or just a sliver. The phases of the moon can reflect the phases of life. Or the moon can just be an old goose. As the podcast's hosts discovered, the moon can be whatever you want it to be. And it seems like most artists have performed at least one song about the moon - from Frank Sinatra to Audrey Hepburn, from Elvis Presley to Creedence Clearwater Revival, from Van Morrison to Neil Young, and from Bjork to Bruno Mars. Just be careful with how hard you dig into moon-themed songs ... or you may end up seeing stars.

Beyond the Orientalist myth of being seductive, mysterious, and dangerous, what is the reality of Tangier? Professor of anthropology Majid Hannoum deconstructs the invention of the Maghreb and delves into the complex socioeconomic and racial fabric of contemporary Moroccan cities. He explores how colonial legacies continue to shape identity, from the very term "Maghreb" – which he argues did not exist in pre-colonial Arabic historiography in its current sense – to the phenomenology of color that influences modern social hierarchies in Tangier. 00:00 Introduction 01:50 The Colonial and Post-Colonial Invention of the Maghreb 03:31 Neighborhood Politics and Class Dynamics in Meknes, Morocco 06:12 Historical Evolution of Maghreb in Arabic Historiography 09:17 Deconstructing Orientalist Myths and the Seductive Image of Tangier 12:47 Historical European Gazes 18:03 Tangier in Pre-Colonial Times 19:41 Tangier in Fiction, Songs, and Folktales 23:41 Exploring Migration, Sexuality, and the City's Unseen Sides 25:59 Socioeconomic Realities 30:23 Migration Patterns and the Phenomenology of Color in Moroccan Urbanism 32:59 The Native Colonial Gaze and Socioeconomic Racialization 39:46 Decolonizing Ibn Khaldun & Challenging the Myth of European Discovery 43:24 Translation Ideology 50:43 Discourse Analysis and the Radical Critique of Academic Categories 53:40 Scholarly Recommendations for Unlearning and Decolonizing Knowledge Majid Hannoum is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Kansas whose extensive research focuses on North Africa. Growing up in Meknes, Morocco, his personal history is rooted in the very urban and socioeconomic dynamics he explores in his academic work, such as the internal class and neighborhood hierarchies within Moroccan cities. His scholarship is deeply concerned with deconstructing colonial narratives and unlearning entrenched mindsets. Connect with Majid Hannoum

Expansions of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank are proceeding at a record pace, and in the US town of Teaneck, New Jersey, some residents are organizing to fight real estate sales to American Jews. It’s sparked accusations of antisemitism and ratcheted up tension in the small community. What’s next for Teaneck?
