My guest today, the noted muralist, John Cerney, is a Salinas, California native whose artwork can best be described as ‘giant cut-out plywood art' that's ordinarily viewed from the comfort of your car. There's a sense of Norman Rockwell to his work, with a dash of Christo. After earning an art degree from Cal State Long Beach in 1984, John worked in Southern California as a portrait artist, rendering finely detailed pencil drawings. His patrons were television producers, actors, and writers, with such clients as the late comedian John Candy and baseball star Reggie Jackson. Wanting to reach a larger audience, John would periodically relocate to Central California and convince a farmer to allow him to paint a mural on his barn, just for practice. This led to commissions from local businesses. A major shift happened when he added cutout plywood pieces to his barn murals. Eventually, he abandoned barns and walls altogether, concentrating on the cut-outs themselves. When the scale of his work got much larger, it attracted ad agencies and businesses from around the country. By then he had a blueprint for the way to create his art installations, which he still does to this day. John splits his time working on commissions from clients across the country and his own personal projects that allow him to explore his unusual form of public art. John's work can be found in 23 states around the U.S. And his work has been featured in National Geographic Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, and the New York Times. https://www.johncerneymurals.com/Instagram: @johncerney

Throughout the episode, Fabian emphasizes the power of art to heal, build connections, bring attention to inequalities, and transform lives. He also discusses his ongoing mission to preserve the Chicano mural tradition and ensure that future generations of artists have the tools and support they need to succeed and how receiving the National Heritage Award can help him amplify this. I'm declaring this week "Up-and-Coming Young Artist Week." I recently sat down with a couple of relatively new muralists who have a lot of spirit, and I think you'll enjoy hearing their stories. This episode features 23-year-old muralist Ana Gabriele Honsowetz, aka Ana the Artist. She shares her journey into full-time creativity and the hoops she has to jump through to make muraling a profitable career. Hearing that this young artist is making five figures per mural kind of blew me away. We chat about her pricing strategies and where exactly Ana is getting jobs within her community. One of the main takeaways is how her outgoing personality gives her a leg up when pitching ideas. She has this "I'll just figure it out" attitude that has really served her well. It's fun to see someone following their passion early in life, even if it's not the easiest route. Let me know what you think of this week's episode with Ana the Artist. www.MuralMoney.comwww.ArtistAcademy.co

This week for a special May Mural Month episode I decided to bring back an interview I did 5 years ago with a muralist I started out working under. Melvin Lovejoy and I met on the job site of Bass Pro Shops. The very first memory that pops into my head when I think of Melvin is when we were working together at a store near Vancouver, British Columbia. A really big wall needed to be painted with an underwater scene, and he suggested I do it. I quickly shot the opportunity back at him, assuring him that I in fact did not need to paint that large of a wall and that he could tackle it easily. He tossed it right back at me, assuring me that I could in fact paint this wall myself. I remember the feeling of panic setting in as I prepped to start painting the largest wall I had yet to tackle. It took a couple of days to get going, and a couple of weeks to complete, but I more than surprised myself with being able to complete the large underwater scene on my own. My confidence grew exponentially with a big thanks to Melvin for the push. Melvin later mentored me on a variety of painting techniques. He shared with me what he was earning per hour while painting and suggested I ask for a raise in my contract. I learned so much just being on the job site around artists like Melvin who had been painting for years longer than I had. It was both extremely intimidating and a great learning experience that I feel so fortunate to have experienced. When I started this podcast series over 5 years ago, I started out with the intent to just tell artist's stories. It turned into more of a business podcast with tips on pricing and hustling to get those first jobs, but back then it was more just a chat about art life and how artists made their way into this creative industry. I hope you'll enjoy this journey back in time with Melvin and hear all about how he got his start as a muralist. Instantly recognizable and beaming with positivity, Michelle Hoogveld's colorful, kaleidoscopic murals demonstrate the power of love, connection, and color. Her graphic, geometric compositions weave an intricate tapestry of joy and passion, the relationships we form with each other, and the one thing that connects us all: love.“I chose February 14 as my first day as a professional artist because I wanted to choose love,” Michelle says. “I wanted that to be my day of choosing the thing that brought me the most joy and passion. At that time, I had no idea that my art would be about love and connection, so it's a symbol and a meaningful date because it's not only just about love romantically for the world, but it became a catalyst for this career change and my goal as an artist moving forward.”In today's podcast episode, host and NOT REAL ART founder Scott “Sourdough” Power sits down with Michelle to discuss the Canadian artist's practice and creative process. A former athlete, Michelle shares the valuable lessons she picked up playing soccer and how it helped her in the studio. “[Being an athlete] taught me determination, [motivation], and hard work ethic,” she says. “You put in the time. That very much translates to running your own business and being an artist. You have to put in the time, you have to dream big, and you have to have goals of excellence.”Michelle and Scott also chat about the motivating effects of self-care, why her practice remains mostly a “one-man show,” and the importance of “just showing up.” Tune into today's episode with Michelle Hoogveld for a conversation about color, connection, and creating a brighter world.Key Points From This Episode:Some of the colorful, eye-catching murals Michelle has done in LA.The massive studio she recently found that can accommodate her large-scale work.Insight into her creative process and why she mostly remains a “one-man show.”What Michelle learned about putting in the time and dreaming big from being an athlete. Why she chose February 14th as the first day of her career as a professional artist.Influential people in her life and how the painter Andrew Salgado has inspired her.How seeing others chase their dreams gives you permission to try.Advice for young artists who are trying to find their voice in the art world.Reasons that love, connection, and color are at the core of Michelle's work.A look at her daily schedule and routine and the power of just showing up.How self-care informs motivation and even inspiration for Michelle. What the future holds for today's guest and where you can view her work. For more information, please visit http://notrealart.com/michelle-hoogveld
