Muralist and illustrator, UX and AR designer Mike Wirth talks about why Back to School is the perfect antidote to the End of the Summer Blues, and why teachers, instructors, and professors should give it a watch, or a re-watch.-Mike Wirth is a leader in Jewish Futurism art and philosophy, using speculative design methods to reimagine Jewish culture, traditions, and technology for the future in his artwork, projects and presentations. Mike's work blends storytelling, technology, and social impact, exploring cultural identity and social justice through public art, digital media, and interactive experiences within and outside of his community. An Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Queens University and artist-in-residence at the Stan Greenspon Center for Holocaust and Social Justice Education, Mike founded the university's graphic design major and has spent over two decades mentoring emerging designers and artists.https://mikewirthart.comhttps://mikewirthart.com/shop/ https://www.instagram.com/mikewirth/ -Back to School (1986)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090685/ https://www.vulture.com/article/best-college-comedy-movies-ranked.htmlhttps://www.vulture.com/2013/01/the-lost-roles-of-rodney-dangerfield.htmlhttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/81506/15-educational-facts-about-back-school -Rodney Dangerfieldhttps://www.youtube.com/@rodneynorespect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbNYAeYxLbA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7HgjlpMUrw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZpH0re__gM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga_reU5lasQ -Rodney and the Marvel Dazzler connectionhttps://collider.com/unmade-marvel-movie-dazzler-the-movie-kiss-the-village-people-cher/ https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/from-grace-jones-to-bo-derek-40-years-of-marvels-dazzler -Other movies and shows discussed, alphabetical listAnnie Hall (1977)Caddyshack (1980)Dead Poets Society (1989)Easy Money (1983)The King of Staten Island (2020)National Lampoon's Animal House (1978)Real Genius (1985)Revenge of the Nerds (1984)Teen Wolf Too (1987)

Jana Ireijo is an Hawaii born muralist whose passion as a conservation artist is born out of a love of art that started at a very young age. Jana creates vanishing murals using charcoal gathered from areas recently affected by wildfires.  This material, formed by the heat of the flames, carries the story of destruction and renewal that is intrinsic to the natural world.  She says her art is a reflection of the transience and impermanence of life and nature. Born in Honolulu in 1968, Jana has spent most of her life in transit leaving the island for California, before attending grad school in New York, then as a divorced woman to Connecticut where she raised her family, and finally returning to Hawai'i in 2023, where she has come full circle. Jana is the eldest of three children; she has a younger sister and brother. Her parents Rona August, a realtor, father James Ireijo, and step-father Joel August (both attorneys) encouraged Jana as a child to explore the arts, taking her to museums and galleries, and ensuring she always had access to arts and crafts. It was her mother that recognized a natural talent and told Jana she would become an artist. When the time came to choice her career pathway, Jana was drawn to advertising and after graduating from H. P. Baldwin High School (Maui) in 1986, she headed for the University of Hawai'i at Manoa to earn a BFA in Graphic Design in1991.  She then attended Pratt Institute, New York, where she earned an MFA Painting in 1999.  Jana took ten years off from her art to raise a family before turning her hand to public murals and developing her own style. I had Thomas "Breeze" Marcus on the podcast today. He goes by Breeze and in fact, his name is really kind of synonymous to the type of imagery that he does in his fine art paintings. This guy is just so unique. I had such a fun time with this podcast because it was one of those where it's a full conversation, not just an artist's biography. It made me think about where we're going and about things that I may never have even thought about in regard to art and when that happens I find it extremely enjoyable. It just scratches that itch, you know? The itch that I get when trying to understand someone as complex as Breeze. From being a graffiti artist and what that entails and where that world catapulted him, to doing murals for big cities and big museums. He did one for Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West that is tremendous. I recommend people go and visit this mural as its an ode to his people (O'odham) but also a tribute to Ed Mell, who he respected and was mentored by. This podcast that might change the way you look at graffiti art and murals and even Native art as a whole. Breeze is a very unique person, an important artist, and you'll be hearing a lot more about his work in the future.

My guest today, the noted muralist, John Cerney, is a Salinas, California native whose artwork can best be described as ‘giant cut-out plywood art' that's ordinarily viewed from the comfort of your car. There's a sense of Norman Rockwell to his work, with a dash of Christo.            After earning an art degree from Cal State Long Beach in 1984, John worked in Southern California as a portrait artist, rendering finely detailed pencil drawings. His patrons were television producers, actors, and writers, with such clients as the late comedian John Candy and baseball star Reggie Jackson.            Wanting to reach a larger audience, John would periodically relocate to Central California and convince a farmer to allow him to paint a mural on his barn, just for practice. This led to commissions from local businesses. A major shift happened when he added cutout plywood pieces to his barn murals. Eventually, he abandoned barns and walls altogether, concentrating on the cut-outs themselves. When the scale of his work got much larger, it attracted ad agencies and businesses from around the country. By then he had a blueprint for the way to create his art installations, which he still does to this day. John splits his time working on commissions from clients across the country and his own personal projects that allow him to explore his unusual form of public art. John's work can be found in 23 states around the U.S. And his work has been featured in National Geographic Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, and the New York Times. https://www.johncerneymurals.com/Instagram: @johncerney

I'm declaring this week "Up-and-Coming Young Artist Week." I recently sat down with a couple of relatively new muralists who have a lot of spirit, and I think you'll enjoy hearing their stories. This episode features 23-year-old muralist Ana Gabriele Honsowetz, aka Ana the Artist. She shares her journey into full-time creativity and the hoops she has to jump through to make muraling a profitable career. Hearing that this young artist is making five figures per mural kind of blew me away. We chat about her pricing strategies and where exactly Ana is getting jobs within her community. One of the main takeaways is how her outgoing personality gives her a leg up when pitching ideas. She has this "I'll just figure it out" attitude that has really served her well. It's fun to see someone following their passion early in life, even if it's not the easiest route. Let me know what you think of this week's episode with Ana the Artist. www.MuralMoney.comwww.ArtistAcademy.co

This week for a special May Mural Month episode I decided to bring back an interview I did 5 years ago with a muralist I started out working under. Melvin Lovejoy and I met on the job site of Bass Pro Shops. The very first memory that pops into my head when I think of Melvin is when we were working together at a store near Vancouver, British Columbia. A really big wall needed to be painted with an underwater scene, and he suggested I do it. I quickly shot the opportunity back at him, assuring him that I in fact did not need to paint that large of a wall and that he could tackle it easily. He tossed it right back at me, assuring me that I could in fact paint this wall myself. I remember the feeling of panic setting in as I prepped to start painting the largest wall I had yet to tackle. It took a couple of days to get going, and a couple of weeks to complete, but I more than surprised myself with being able to complete the large underwater scene on my own. My confidence grew exponentially with a big thanks to Melvin for the push. Melvin later mentored me on a variety of painting techniques. He shared with me what he was earning per hour while painting and suggested I ask for a raise in my contract. I learned so much just being on the job site around artists like Melvin who had been painting for years longer than I had. It was both extremely intimidating and a great learning experience that I feel so fortunate to have experienced. When I started this podcast series over 5 years ago, I started out with the intent to just tell artist's stories. It turned into more of a business podcast with tips on pricing and hustling to get those first jobs, but back then it was more just a chat about art life and how artists made their way into this creative industry. I hope you'll enjoy this journey back in time with Melvin and hear all about how he got his start as a muralist.
