For the third episode in our Arizona series, we head into the bold, colorful world of Phoenix-based muralist Paige Reesor, an artist turning everyday spaces into vibrant, story-filled experiences. Known for her striking large-scale murals that blend realism with imaginative design, Paige shares how her journey began (quite literally) on the walls of her childhood home and evolved into a career transforming businesses, neighborhoods, and public spaces across Arizona. Her work is rooted in connection—each mural designed not just to beautify a wall, but to tell a story and spark something meaningful in the people who encounter it.  We talk about her leap into public art, the power of “big ideas, big art,” and what it means to create work that lives out in the world—where art becomes part of daily life. From backyard commissions to collaborations with major brands and sports teams, Paige brings both precision and passion to every project.  It's a conversation about scale, storytelling, and the creative energy shaping Arizona's visual landscape. For more on Paige's works, visit paigereesor.com. And congratulations Paige on a baby girl, Alessia Sondra, born April 8. An artist in the making!

This includes getting in front of the client, presenting ideas on the spot, and putting in extra effort where it counts. If you've ever felt stuck competing with other artists or unsure how to stand out in an RFP or bid situation, this episode will shift how you approach it.

Anthony Jimenez is a Bay Area–based muralist, educator, and self-described “artivist” whose work centers community, identity, and social justice. Born in Morgan Hill and raised in California's South Bay, Jimenez draws deeply from his Mexican and Chicano roots, using art to explore cultural belonging and the lived experiences of working-class families. His practice is rooted in mentorship and public engagement, often collaborating with youth and community members to create murals that reflect collective histories and struggles. Known for his striking portraiture, Jimenez intentionally uplifts those often overlooked — friends, family, and neighbors — rendering them as powerful, large-scale subjects worthy of visibility and honor. His work frequently highlights matriarchs, everyday people, and victims of state violence, transforming public spaces into sites of remembrance and resistance. Influenced by his role as a father, his recent work embraces intimate, unfiltered depictions of family life. Through art, Jimenez aims to build connection, preserve culture, and inspire collective empowerment.  Connect with Anthony via his Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/anthonyisjim?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: threads.com@lawanddis ; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Resistance in Residence: Anthony Jimenez, Muralist and Educator appeared first on KPFA.

Join MURAL MONEY BOOTCAMP starting May 1st! This episode of the Artist Academy Podcast breaks down the stages every artist goes through while building a career, based on both my own experience and what I've seen coaching artists over the years. It starts with the early phase of uncertainty and self-doubt, where you're figuring things out and questioning if this is even possible. Then comes the stage where work starts coming in, but everything feels messy, overwhelming, and you realize you've been undercharging and overcommitting. From there, it often leads into burnout, caused by saying yes to everything, people-pleasing, and not knowing how to manage your time or boundaries. Eventually, if you stick with it, you move into a stage where you're more confident, more selective, and finally in control of your schedule, pricing, and energy. If you've ever felt overwhelmed, second-guessed yourself, or wondered if you're doing this “right,” this episode will help you understand where you are and what to expect next.

Juliene is dedicated to helping painters finally understand color—why it behaves the way it does, how to mix it with intention, and how mastering it can completely transform artistic confidence. She believes that once you grasp how color truly works, your entire creative world opens up. Juliene lives in the mountains with her husband, son, and two cats, and when she's not painting, she's likely geeking out about color theory or hiking steep trails with bear spray in hand. Together, they explore the emotional and technical layers of color, the courage it takes to follow your creative curiosity, and why making art—imperfect, vibrant, deeply human art—is essential to feeling whole. Margo & Juliene Discuss: Juliene's winding path to watercolor and murals, and how she found her creative voice Why color feels intimidating for so many artists—and how to move from confusion to confidence The power of intentional mixing and creating palettes that feel authentic to you How limiting your palette can actually expand creativity and harmony The emotional side of color—self-doubt, breakthroughs, and trusting the process Creativity as essential human expression, not just a career path Painting with her young son, and what kids teach us about fearless creativity Submit Your Questions for Margo Tantau & Emily McDowell Connect with Juliene: Website: www.julienesinclair.com Instagram: @juliene.sinclair YouTube: @julienesinclair Connect with Margo: Website: www.windowsillchats.com Instagram: @windowsillchats www.patreon.com/inthewindowsill https://www.yourtantaustudio.com/thefoundry

Jana Ireijo is an Hawaii born muralist whose passion as a conservation artist is born out of a love of art that started at a very young age. Jana creates vanishing murals using charcoal gathered from areas recently affected by wildfires.  This material, formed by the heat of the flames, carries the story of destruction and renewal that is intrinsic to the natural world.  She says her art is a reflection of the transience and impermanence of life and nature. Born in Honolulu in 1968, Jana has spent most of her life in transit leaving the island for California, before attending grad school in New York, then as a divorced woman to Connecticut where she raised her family, and finally returning to Hawai'i in 2023, where she has come full circle. Jana is the eldest of three children; she has a younger sister and brother. Her parents Rona August, a realtor, father James Ireijo, and step-father Joel August (both attorneys) encouraged Jana as a child to explore the arts, taking her to museums and galleries, and ensuring she always had access to arts and crafts. It was her mother that recognized a natural talent and told Jana she would become an artist. When the time came to choice her career pathway, Jana was drawn to advertising and after graduating from H. P. Baldwin High School (Maui) in 1986, she headed for the University of Hawai'i at Manoa to earn a BFA in Graphic Design in1991.  She then attended Pratt Institute, New York, where she earned an MFA Painting in 1999.  Jana took ten years off from her art to raise a family before turning her hand to public murals and developing her own style. Now back in the islands as an empty nester, Jana has immersed herself in her passion for environmental issues, such as the ocean, deep sea mining, and helping her community. I had Thomas "Breeze" Marcus on the podcast today. He goes by Breeze and in fact, his name is really kind of synonymous to the type of imagery that he does in his fine art paintings. This guy is just so unique. I had such a fun time with this podcast because it was one of those where it's a full conversation, not just an artist's biography. It made me think about where we're going and about things that I may never have even thought about in regard to art and when that happens I find it extremely enjoyable. It just scratches that itch, you know? The itch that I get when trying to understand someone as complex as Breeze. From being a graffiti artist and what that entails and where that world catapulted him, to doing murals for big cities and big museums. He did one for Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West that is tremendous. I recommend people go and visit this mural as its an ode to his people (O'odham) but also a tribute to Ed Mell, who he respected and was mentored by. This podcast that might change the way you look at graffiti art and murals and even Native art as a whole. Breeze is a very unique person, an important artist, and you'll be hearing a lot more about his work in the future.
