Just east of downtown St. Paul, near Pig's Eye Park along the river, people at a homeless encampment are facing this winter's first subzero temperatures. Recent reports say the camp has grown in the last six months and comes at a time when several St. Paul shelters say they're at capacity. It's a site that's far away from many homeless support services and organizations. Volunteers and the city's homeless response team have been regularly coming to the camp to provide supplies and support. Minnesota Now host Nina Moini spoke with St. Paul's director of safety and inspections, Angie Wiese, to learn more about the situation. For more information on warming spaces available in Ramsey County, visit the county's website.

Look, if a goat ever introduces itself as “Commander of the Northern Armies,” just leave. Don’t ask questions. Don’t wait for subtitles. Just… leave.Anyway—This episode picks up right where the foolishness peaks. The goats have multiplied, organized, unionized, and somehow declared themselves landlords of the Galápagos Islands. What started as a handful of abandoned livestock has escalated into one of the most absurd ecological battles ever fought, and we’re documenting every wild moment. We travel through decades of destruction, scientists losing their minds, park rangers chasing goats up volcanoes, military generals refusing to be threatened by livestock, and the legendary rise (and mysterious disappearance) of Maximus Goátimus Meridius. Yes, the one who speaks through a diplomat fluent in Pig and Goat Latin. From helicopter raids to the betrayal of the Judas Goats, from the Tortoise Summit of 1995 to the final eradication campaign, this is the fully unhinged chronicle of a war the world pretends never happened.Welcome to the finale of the Galapagoat saga.

When I was a young man in my late teens, I played drums at a big church in West Tennessee where Sam Austin was pastoring. He now pastors somewhere in Arkansas now and is an evangelist. He would sometimes say, “You can clean up a pig and win first prize at the county fair but as soon as you get that clean pig home, it's running straight for the mud! Because that is what pigs do!” Paul tells Timothy, “Teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others...” Some people just aren't trustworthy, they take what they have been taught and do nothing with it, they just soak it all in and never share it, like pigs, they devour all the food and go play in the mud.

Featured Musician: The Band Feel THE VIDEO: [After THE JUMP: Things discussable.]  --------------------- Not necessarily in this order. 1. Maryland Preview: Offense starts at around noon They have a kid quarterback too, but Malik Washington doesn't have an offensive line or a running game to help him. He does have a redzone threat in Shaleak Knotts and a couple of other productive receivers. That offensive line is the problem—their left tackle is from Central Connecticut State and he's not even their worst OL. Their TE room is banged up and bad at blocking. The RB and TE are good receivers but don't contribute much to the run game either, and somebody on this team has to protect the QB. 2. Maryland Preview: Defense starts at around 12:20 PM They're very young—younger than we are. Remember when Jalen Huskey picked off JJ McCarthy in the endzone? Hint: it was the game JJ threw interceptions in 2023 and made us feel bad briefly. They're opportunistic in the secondary, and won some games early in the season because they pick the ball off. They also have some transfers who make the passing game tough sledding: an Ohio vagabond who gets the backfield, a true freshman pass rusher that M had its eye on. Safeties are the returning starters and the best part of the defense, but have to hang back and clean up after the kids. Prescription: pound 'em. 3. Hoops: TCU and MTSU After-Action Report starts around 12:40 PM This team can be maddening. They have eight to nine starters who will take over a game or throw it away on any given possession. Aday Mara can be inconsistent even when his height isn't, and that's why they're 6th in Kenpom. Team fixed its rebounding issues and sprung some major turnover issues that allowed MTSU back into a game they were out of, before they were out of it again. The Blue Raiders settled for a lot of jumpers—contested threes or pullup other twos, while M is scoring 1.4 PPP at the rim. That formula is going to work against a lot of teams, but San Diego State and Auburn are going to be real threats. 4. Northwestern After Review starts at around 1:00 PM Andrew Marsh, come on down. Already on star watch and boy do we like that. Bryce was pretty good except when he threw a REALLY BAD freshman interception and an only kinda bad OC interception because they went to the well one too many times against Robert Fitzgerald, who balled out. Run game: Jordan Marshall is special but Bryson Kuzdzal is playable. Offensive line continues to do well against this level of competition; got 70% of their available yards against a very good defense. Defensively Seth thinks he's figured out (finally) why Michigan's rotations are what they are, in part because Michigan finally figured out their rotations. They also tried a new 3-3-5 defensive strategy that uses Barham as a linebacker and Hausmann as a hybrid, but it suffered the same fate as a lot of Wink ideas when he springs something new. Fine games from Brandyn Hillman and Mason Curtis; not as mad at Bowles as I thought we'd be. Cam Brandt: that's still weird, at least in pass rush, but he did some things in the run game to justify himself again. Featured Artist: The Band Feel You know here at MGoBlog we're fans of the un-Googleable. The Band Feel, which will be at The Pig in a few weeks, looks, acts, and sounds like a lost act from the early 1970s. But man does it ever work now, and it's not like the psychedelic ideas stopped coming when all the Zeppelin knockoffs drank themselves into glam. The Band Feel picks up where Beck, Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc. left off, but they also work in all the threads that have been developed since. The hit is "Shoal Creek" which sounds like a long lost Led Zeppelin song, but I stumbled on "Fly Birdy, Fly" which weaves in some of the bluegrassy ideas that became country back into rock. Goodbye Virginia is off their 2024 EP but the others are from their newest album Into the Sun. Songs: Icarus Fly Birdy, Fly Goodbye Virginia Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken down, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat

How does a woman born and raised on the Greek island of Salamis wind up in Cardiff studying Celtic Mythology?2. You're a Tolkien scholar and expert in fantasy and Children's literature. Tolkienistas are legend for looking down their Ent noses at Harry Potter, though there are important exceptions to that rule (the late Stratford Caldecott, his wife Leonie, Amy H. Sturgis, others). How did you meet the Boy Who Lived and what were your first impressions of Rowling as author?3. You have a lot in common with Rowling, no? Tolkien devotee, serious student of mythology, and a wonderful appreciation of the magic of story, especially magical stories for children. The Tolkien influence on Rowling is well documented though she has tried to belittle it, but her use of myths as templates for her stories is less well known but at least as important. What do you make of her admittedly “shameless” borrowing from folk tales and myths?4. I guess this is a segue to the Cormoran Strike books which are awash in myths -- Leda and the Swan, Castor and Pollux, Cupid and Psyche, Artemis and Tisiphone... Am I missing any?5. You've seen Rowling's recent confirmation of the Cupid and Psyche myth in her tweeted painting of ‘Psyche Ascendant.' That suggests we'll see the happy ending of the myth in Strikes 9 and 10. Or does it? What did you see of that myth specifically in Hallmarked Man?6. Running Grave has another embedded text, not a myth per se, one that makes sense in light of Rowling's love of everything the Bronte sisters wrote. Tell us what made you think of Jane Eyre as you were reading Strike 7.7. Rowling did something unusual in 2019, well, among the unusual things she did that year, in inviting readers to interpret her work in light of their ‘Lake' inspiration as well as her intentional ‘Shed' artistry. Writers like Lewis and Tolkien would be aghast at that, though Inkling Studies today necessarily include heavy biographical leanings in almost everything written about those authors. What is your take in general on what Lewis called ‘The Personal Heresy' and about Rowling as a living author inviting that critical perspective while she is still among us?8. It's fascinating, frankly, that you are not so compartmentalized in your reading that Rowling is still a writer you read outside of her fantasy and children's literature. Do you read the Strike-Ellacott stories because you also love a good detective novel or is it your interest in Rowling and whatever she is writing?9. Have you read Christmas Pig? John believes that in fifty years, the Lord tarrying, high school and college students will read Pig as Rowling's representative work the way we had to read Tale of Two Cities or Christmas Carol to be exposed to Dickens.10. John tries to read imaginative fiction through what he calls an “iconological lens,” a method born of his Perennialist beliefs and life as an Orthodox Christian. In what ways do you think your childhood and secondary education gave you a sympathy unusual for multi-valent texts than those born and raised in relatively secular cultures? Despite being arrested for burglarizing at least 15 businesses and pleading guilty SIX TIMES, Banks keeps getting released thanks to Hinds County's infamous "catch and release" program. He's free to strike again in a city fighting to recover from eight years under Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba's socialist policies. Jackson beat New York to electing a radical mayor—want proof of "communism done right"? Come tour Jacktown with me.   We break down the shocking details from Jackson Jambalaya's latest exposé: Banks' criminal history spanning 2009-2024, lenient sentences from judges like Bill Gowan, William Kidd, Faye Peterson, Johnny McDaniels, and Damon Stevenson, and the DA's failures (shoutout to Jody Owens). Highlights include: 2009: Indicted for business burglary; pleaded guilty, full 5-year sentence suspended. 2017: Burglary at Jocko's Tacos; 7 years, 4 suspended (lived at Gateway Shelter). 2018: Burglary at Stanley's Wine and Liquor; 7 years, 3 suspended (concurrent with 2017). 2019: Burglary at Downtown Snack Shop; 7 years, 2 suspended + drug/alcohol treatment. 2020: Two counts for Greenbrook Flowers and Iron Horse Grill (2019 hits); 7 years, 2 suspended. 2022: Burglary at the Hood Building; 7 years, 2 suspended (no habitual offender enhancement). 2022 (again): 10 COUNTS including La Cazuela, Kiefer's, Shero's, Pizza and Daiquiri Shop, Steve's Deli, Mississippi Farmers Market, Downtown Drugstore, Pig and Pint, Finian's, and Tatum & Wade Law Firm—remanded as part of prior case. 2024: Capitol Police arrest for Downtown Drugstore, Native Coffee, and Lou's Restaurant (plus another); 1-year revocation, but paroled quickly. Indicted as habitual offender—trial set for July 2026.   This guy's an economic terrorist, driving away customers and businesses. We also touch on recent closures: Arby's on High Street shutting down for good, plus PetSmart (I-55 North) and TJ Maxx (East County Line Road) relocating to Ridgeland's Highland Colony Parkway. Why? Crime and mismanagement—Jackson going full "Jackson."   My raw, unfiltered reaction: No sympathy for these repeat offenders. I've dealt with them for years—most stories are lies, just excuses for dope. Police do their job, but prosecutors, judges, and MDOC keep releasing them. Businesses are fleeing—can you blame them?   Sponsored by Men's Health of Mississippi: Guys, if you're dealing with low energy, stubborn belly fat, lack of muscle tone, reduced sex drive, or no morning wood, it could be low testosterone. I'm a client—3 years in, down 80 pounds, metabolic age of 36 (I'm 48!), and in the best shape ever. Get a FREE testosterone screening at their Madison clinic. In this episode, Dr. Spencer Wayne sits down with Hayden Kerkaert, Director of Pig Sales & Marketing for Pipestone Management, to break down the current weaned pig market and what it means for producers across the country. Hayden shares practical insights on what drives pig value, pricing, and performance. The weaned pig market has stayed strong longer than manyexpected. Unlike past short-term spikes, today's high prices have lasted nearly a year, driven by tight pig supply, health challenges like PRRS, and some producers exiting the industry. Understanding why prices remain high—and whatbuyers are looking for—is critical for anyone raising or purchasing pigs.Hayden and Spencer cover the key factors affecting weanedpig prices, with health status at the top of the list. Buyers need clear, detailed information on a pig's health, including PRRS status, vaccination history, and disease exposure, because it's critical for them to know what's coming into their barn. Vaccinated pigs generally perform better and can command higher value. Misunderstanding or missing these details can lead to costly mistakes, which is why Hayden emphasizes the importance of working closely with your veterinarian. Beyond the numbers, trust and strong relationships between buyers and sellers are just as important—producers who communicate openly and reliably about pig health create lasting partnerships and maintain the value of their pigs.Pig age, genetics, and attributes also matter. Older pigs(23–24 days) often bring a premium because they thrive in the nursery and have lower mortality. Genetics like Duroc-sired pigs, and attributes such as Prop 12 compliance or open pen gestation, can influence contracts and buyer interest. Timing and pig flow management—getting pigs to the right barn at the right time—also play a major role in profitability.Whether you're a producer selling pigs, a buyer sourcing animals, or managing a sow farm, this episode provides real-world guidance you can put to work today. Hayden breaks down complex market dynamics into practical advice for navigating the weaned pig market, keeping pigs healthy, and maximizing return on every head.Tune in for insights that help you make smarter decisions for your pigs, your barn, and your bottom line.

https://mikkoschoice.com/ https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs/p/autumn-acres-educational-membership-group-copy             Welcome back to The Pet Pig Podcast! In this episode of a two-part series, Autumn dives into one of the most common challenges pig families face — Spoiled Pig Syndrome, or SPS. Don't let the name fool you — SPS isn't a hopeless situation or a sign that you've failed as a pig parent. It's a natural result of unclear boundaries and leadership, and the good news is that it's 100% preventable and fixable.           Autumn explains how pigs view the world through hierarchy and body language, not words, and why stepping confidently into the leader role is the key to raising a respectful, relaxed, and happy pig. You'll learn the foundations of leadership, including:     •    Understanding pig hierarchy and how pigs communicate respect     •    How to use the "Move the Pig" technique to earn respect through calm, confident movement     •    What to do if your pig challenges your authority — without fear, anger, or yelling     •    Why making your pig "work for food" builds trust, patience, and self-control     •    How to stop the screaming habit by breaking the reward cycle          This episode will help you understand your pig's behavior on a deeper level and give you the tools to build a strong, trusting relationship through leadership — not force. Pig farmers will receive subsidies of 300 N-T per animal for higher feed costs resulting from the ban on using food waste, and up to 18,000 N-T for every farm to cover fuel expenses for clearing out food waste. They're also entitled to an 810 N-T per animal for additional feed costs resulting from the slaughter ban. Meat sellers will receive 30,000 N-T compensation (賠償) for income losses from suspending operations during the transport and slaughter bans, while meat markets can receive up to 200,000 N-T for rent cost losses. The decision came on Thursday after a 13-hour intense debate. The treaty, effective in Latvia since 2024, aims to standardize (標準化) support for victims of violence. Critics argue it promotes "gender ideology." In September, opposition lawmakers initiated the withdrawal process, supported by some coalition members. Washington After Review starts at 43:48 Waiting for Brian to tell us about Bryce and Frazier, but they looked pretty good. Drops were an issue, are an issue. Seth proposes a prospectin' name for Jordan Marshall. Defensively Washington contributed a lot to our scores, but credit Wink or the people who yelled at him for going back to the 2024 Ohio State gameplan. Long discussion on the rotations, especially at DL—Cam Brandt isn't Derrick Moore or a young Derrick Moore and it's unfair to be playing him as such. Also Jordan Young at the end of the 2nd half when you've got a 7-point lead. 3. Hoops and Hockey Check-In starts at 1:15:54 Hockey is undefeated after their best game in years vs WMU, game 2 is tonight and will be intense. Hoops has their 2nd exhibition, hopefully with a frontcourt this time, and this one has all the makings of an elite matchup. Featured Artist: Chirp Chirp is a four-piece band that hops around genres. Nick Jeffery and John Granger continue their Q&A conversations about Rowling-Galbraith's Hallmarked Man (if you missed the first discussion, click here to catch up). As usual, the pair promised to send links and notes along with their recorded back and forth for anyone wanting to read more about the subjects they discussed. Scroll down for their seven plus one questions and a bevy of bonus material they trust will add to your appreciation of Rowling's Strike 8 artistry and meaning. Cheers!Q1: What is the meaning of or artistry involved with Pat Chauncey's three fish in the Agency's fish tank, ‘Robin,' ‘Cormoran,' and ‘Travolta/Elton'?Mise en Abyme (Wikipedia)In Western art history, mise en abyme (French pronunciation: [miz ɑ̃n‿abim]; also mise en abîme) is the technique of placing a copy of an image within itself, often in a way that suggests an infinitely recurring sequence. In film theory and literary theory, it refers to the story within a story technique. The term is derived from heraldry, and means placed into abyss (exact middle of a shield). It was first appropriated for modern criticism by the French author André Gide. A common sense of the phrase is the visual experience of standing between two mirrors and seeing an infinite reproduction of one's image. Another is the Droste effect, in which a picture appears within itself, in a place where a similar picture would realistically be expected to appearSnargaloff pods (Harry Potter Wiki)“It sprang to life at once; long, prickly, bramble-like vines flew out of the top and whipped through the air... Harry succeeded in trapping a couple of vines and knotting them together; a hole opened in the middle of all the tentacle-like branches... Hermione snatched her arm free, clutching in her fingers a pod... At once, the prickly vines shot back inside and the gnarled stump sat there looking like an innocently dead lump of wood“— The trio dealing with the Snargaluff plant in sixth year Herbology classSnargaluff was a magical plant with the appearance of a gnarled stump, but had dangerous hidden thorn-covered vines that attacked when provoked, and was usually best handled by more than one person.Juliana's Question about the Oranda Goldfish:did anyone else notice - I confess to only noticing this on my second re-read of THM- that Travolta, Pat's third fish, dies? What do we think about this? Could this mean Mr. Ryan F. Murphy dies…? Or could it just be foreshadowing of the fact that him and Robin don't end up together? I think the fish symbolism was quite humorous and delightful paralleling such a deep and intricate plot. Just wanted to know if anyone noticed this tinge of humor towards the end of the book… As for the fish theory, Pat's three fish in the tank: Strike, Robin and the third, she calls, Travolta — ironically, named after a “handsome” man. I'm thinking JKR meant Travolta, the fish to symbolize Murphy…What I was referring to in my original comment: the three fish = the love triangle between Ellacott/Murphy/Strike. I was asking: since Travolta died in Chapter 113, do we think this foreshadows Murphy either dying physically, or just that Robin and Murphy do not end up together?John's ‘Fish and Peas' Response:It's a relief to learn that Travolta's most famous role wasn't a character named Ryan Murphy that everyone in the world except myself knows very well. Thank you for this explanation! There's more to your idea, though, I think, then you have shared. Forgive me if you were already aware of this textual argument that suggests very strongly that these Oranda goldfish have been an important part of Rowling's plan from the series from the start. In brief, it's about the peas.In Part 2, Chapter 3, of ‘Cuckoo's Calling,' Robin and Matt are having their first fight about Strike and the Agency. The chapter ends with an odd note that this disagreement has blemished the Cunliffe couple's engagement.“She waited until he had walked away into the sitting room before turning off the tap. There was, she noticed, a fragment of frozen pea caught in the setting of her engagement ring.” (73)Your theory that the fish bowl is an embedded picture of the state of Robin's feelings for Murphy and Strike, a Mise en abyme of sorts, is given credibility in the eyes of this reader by the appearance of frozen peas as the cure for the dying Cormoran goldfish. It is hard for a Rowling Reader to believe that these two mentions of frozen pea fragments were coincidental or unrelated, which means that (a) Rowling had the office Oranda goldfish scene-within-the-scene in Strike 8 foreshadowed by the Strike 1 tiff, and (b) therefore of real significance. There is another pea bit, of course, in ‘Troubled Blood' at Skegness, a passage that links Robin's heart or essence with peas.Strike was still watching the starlings when Robin set down two polystyrene trays, two small wooden forks and two cans of Coke on the table.“Mushy peas,” said Strike, looking at Robin's tray, where a hefty dollop of what looked like green porridge sat alongside her fish and chips.“Yorkshire caviar,” said Robin, sitting down. “I didn't think you'd want any.”“You were right,” said Strike, picking up a sachet of tomato sauce while watching with something like revulsion as Robin dipped a chip into the green sludge and ate it.“Soft Southerner, you are,” she said, and Strike laughed. (807-808)If you tie this in with the fish symbolism embedded in Rowling's favorite paintings and the meaning of ‘Oranda,' this is quite a bit of depth in that fish bowl -- and in your argument that the death of Travolta signifies Murphy is out of consideration. You're probably to young to remember this but Travolta's most famous role will always be Tony Manero in ‘Saturday Night Fever,' the breakout event of his acting career. Manero longs for a woman way out of his league, attempts to rape her after they win a dance contest, she naturally rejects him, but they wind up as friends.Or in a book so heavy in the cultish beliefs and practices of Freemasonry, especially with respect to policemen that are also “on the square,” maybe the Travolta-Murphy link is just that the actor is, with Tom Cruise, as famous (well...) for his beliefs in Scientology as for his acting ability. So, yes, it's fun, your ‘Peas and Fish' theory, but there's something to it.Check out this note on ‘Peas' in the Strike novels from Renee over at the weblog: https://www.hogwartsprofessor.com/hallmarked-man-placeholder-post-index/comment-page-1/#comment-1699017 The fish symbolism embedded in Rowling's favorite painting: https://hogwartsprofessor.substack.com/p/rowlings-favorite-painting-and-what And the meaning of ‘Oranda:' https://www.hogwartsprofessor.com/rowling-twixter-fish-and-strike-update/Follow-Up by Julianna:I'm not sure what exact chapter this is in, but let's also not forget that on Sark, Strike procures a bag of frozen peas to soothe the spade to his face injury. I also want to add that he has used frozen peas before, to soothe his aching leg too, but I could be wrong about that…I cant remember where I've read that, so it might not be true….Lastly, after reading Renee's comment, I have to say, that now I do believe that the peas might have been an ongoing symbol for Strike (a la…the pea in the engagement ring) and…stay with me here….peas are potentially, what save Cormoran, the goldfish, from dying.“The black fish called Cormoran was again flailing helplessly at the top of the tank. ‘Stupid a*****e, you've done it to your f*cking self'.” And the very last line of the book being: “Then pushed himself into a standing position ear and knee both throbbing. In the absence of anything else he could do to improve his present situation, he set off for the attic to fetch the empty margerine tub…and some peas.” (Chapter 127).My point being: this could be a way of Rowling saying, that Strike saves himself from himself…another psychological undertone in her stories. (Lake reference: Rowling has pulled herself up out of poverty ‘by her own bootstraps' we say.) Thoughts? Thanks for induldging me here, John! I am enjoying this conversation. Apologies for the grammar and potentially confusing train of thoughts. And from Vicky:Loving the theories and symbolism around the peas and fish! Just had a thought too re John quoting the Troubled blood scene. Robin calls mushy peas by a familiar term “Yorkshire caviar”. Caviar is of course fish eggs, and poor Robin, Yorkshire born, spends much of THM agonising over the thought and pressure of freezing her eggs. Giuliana mentioned the frozen peas Strike puts on his swollen face after the spade hit...maybe this is foreshadowing to their intimate and honest dinner conversation later with Robin baring her heart to Strike about her ectopic pregnancy griefQ2: Why didn't the Strike-Ellacott Agency or the Metropolitan Police figure out how the murderer entered the Ramsay Silver vault to kill William Wright the first time they saw the grainy surveillance film of the auction house crate deliveries?Tweet UrlFrom ‘The Locked Room Lecture' (John Dickson Carr) It's silly to be disappointed in a border-line absurd Locked Room Mystery such as Hallmarked Man because improbability is close to a requirement in such stories:“But this point must be made, because a few people who do not like the slightly lurid insist on treating their preferences as rules. They use, as a stamp of condemnation, the word ‘improbable.' And thereby they gull the unwary into their own belief that ‘improbable' simply means ‘bad.'“Now, it seems reasonable to point out that the word improbable is the very last which should ever be used to curse detective fiction in any case. A great part of our liking fofr detective fiction is based on a liking for improbability. When A is murdered, and B and C are under strong suspicion, it is improbably that the innocent-looking D can be guilty. But he is. If G has a perfect alibi, sworn to at every point by every other letter in the alphabet, it is improbable that G can have committed the crime. But he has. When the detective picks up a fleck of coal dust at the seashore, it is improbable that such an insignificant thing can have any importance. But it will. In short, you come to a point where the word improbable grows meaningless as a jeer. There can be no such thing as any probability until the end of the story. And then, if you wish the murder to be fastened on an unlikely person (as some of us old fogies do), you can hardly complain because he acted from motives less likely or necessarily less apparent than those of the person first suspected.“When the cry of ‘This-sort-of-thing-wouldn't-happen!' goes up, when you complain about half-faced fiends and hooded phantoms and blond hypnotic sirens, you are merely saying, ‘I don't like this sort of story.' That's fair enough. If you do not like it, you are howlingly right to say so. But when you twist this matter of taste into a rule for judging the merit or even the probability of the story, you are merely saying, ‘This series of events couldn't happen, because I shouldn't enjoy it if it did.'“What would seem to be the truth of the matter? We might test it out by taking the hermetically sealed chamber as an example, because this situation has been under a hotter fire than any other on the grounds of being unconvincing.“Most people, I am delighted to say, are fond of the locked room. But – here's the damned rub – even its friends are often dubious. I cheerfully admit that I frequently am. So, for the moment, we'll all side together on this score and see what we can discover. Why are we dubious when we hear the explanation of the locked room? Not in the least because we are incredulous, but simply because in some vague way we are disappointed. And from that feeling it is only natural to take an unfair step farther, and call the whole business incredible or impossible or flatly ridiculous.” (reprinted in The Art of the Mystery Story [Howard Haycraft] 273-286)Q3: Hallmarked Man is all about silver and Freemasonry. What is the historical connection between South American silver (‘Argentina' means ‘Land of Silver'), the end of European feudalism, and the secret brotherhood of the Masons? How Silver Flooded the World: And how that Replaced Feudalism and the Church with Capitalism and Nation-States (‘Uncharted Territories,' Tomas Pueyo) In Europe, silver also triggered the discovery of America, a technological explosion, and a runaway chain of events that replaced feudalism with capitalism and nation-states. If you understand this, you'll be able to understand why nation-states are threatened by cryptocurrencies today, and how their inevitable success will weaken nation-states. In this premium article, we're going to explore how Europe starved for silver, and how the reaction to this flooded the world with silver. ,See also Never Bet Against America and Argentina Could be a Superpower, both by Pueyo.‘Conspiracy Theories associated with Freemasonry' (Wikipedia)* That Freemasonry is a Jewish front for world domination or is at least controlled by Jews for this goal. An example of this is the anti-Semitic literary forgery The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Adolf Hitler believed that Freemasonry was a tool of Jewish influence,[12] and outlawed Freemasonry and persecuted Freemasons partially for this reason.[13] The covenant of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas claims that Freemasonry is a “secret society” founded as part of a Zionist plot to control the world.[14] Hilaire Belloc thought Jews had “inaugurated” freemasonry “as a bridge between themselves and their hosts”[15]* That Freemasonry is tied to or behind Communism. The Spanish dictator Francisco Franco had often associated his opposition with both Freemasonry and Communism, and saw the latter as a conspiracy of the former; as he put it, “The whole secret of the campaigns unleashed against Spain can be explained in two words: masonry and communism”.[16] In 1950, Irish Roman Catholic priest Denis Fahey republished a work by George F. Dillon under the title Grand Orient Freemasonry Unmasked as the Secret Power Behind Communism. Modern conspiracy theorists such as Henry Makow have also claimed that Freemasonry intends the triumph of Communism[17]* That Freemasons are behind income taxes in the US. One convicted tax protester has charged that law enforcement officials who surrounded his property in a standoff over his refusal to surrender after his conviction were part of a “Zionist, Illuminati, Free Mason [sic] movement”.[18] The New Hampshire Union Leader also reported that “the Browns believe the IRS and the federal income tax are part of a deliberate plot perpetrated by Freemasons to control the American people and eventually the world”[19]Umberto Eco's The Prague Cemetery, a Freemasonry Novel (Wikipedia)So much for the link between Freemasonry and Baphomet worship!‘The Desacralization of Work' (Roger Sworder, Mining, Metallurgy, and the Meaning of Life)Q4: Ian Griffiths is the Bad Guy of Hallmarked Man. His name has definite Christian overtones (a ‘Griffin,' being half-eagle, half-lion, King of Heaven and Earth, is a symbol of Christ); could it also be another pointer to Rowling's mysterious ‘Back Door Man,' Harry Bingham, author of the Fiona Griffiths series?Troubled Blood: The Acknowledgments (Nick Jeffery, November 2020)In both Silkworm and Career Rowling/Galbraith's military advisors are thanked as SOBE (Sean Harris OBE?) Deeby (Di Brookes?) and the Back Door Man. Professor Granger has identified the Back Door Man as a southern US slang term for a man having an illicit relationship, but beyond this is so far unidentified.Any thoughts on her dedications or acknowledgements? Any new leads for the elusive Back Door Man? Please comment down below.Harry Bingham's website, June 2012“My path into TALKING TO THE DEAD was a curious one. I was approached by a well-known figure who was contemplating working with a ghostwriter on a crime thriller. I hadn't read any crime for a long time, but was intrigued by the project. So I went out and bought about two dozen crime novels, then read them back-to-back over about two weeks.”Could Rowling have hired a (gasp) “ghost writer”? Or was it just “expert editorial assistance” she was looking for, what Bingham offers today?Author's Notes in The Strange Death of Fiona Grifiths (Publication date 29th January 2015, before Career of Evil):“If you want to buy a voice activated bugging device that looks like (and is) an ordinary power socket, it'll set you back about fifty pounds (about eighty bucks).”This is the same surveillance device used in Lethal White, but interestingly is not used in Bingham's book. Start with Gateshead, Pit Ponies, and Council Flats and Bed-Sits!* Gateshead (Wikipedia)J. B. Priestley, writing of Gateshead in his 1934 travelogue English Journey, said that “no true civilisation could have produced such a town”, adding that it appeared to have been designed “by an enemy of the human race”.* Pit Ponies (Wikipedia)Larger horses, such as varieties of Cleveland Bay, could be used on higher underground roadways, but on many duties small ponies no more than 12 hands (48 inches, 122 cm) high were needed. Shetlands were a breed commonly used because of their small size, but Welsh, Russian, Devonshire (Dartmoor) and Cornish ponies also saw extensive use in England.[2] In the interwar period, ponies were imported into Britain from the Faroe Islands, Iceland and the United States. Geldings and stallions only were used. Donkeys were also used in the late 19th century, and in the United States, large numbers of mules were used.[6] Regardless of breed, typical mining ponies were low set, heavy bodied and heavy limbed with plenty of bone and substance, low-headed and sure-footed. Under the British Coal Mines Act 1911 (1 & 2 Geo. 5. c. 50), ponies had to be four years old and work ready (shod and vet checked) before going underground.[15] They could work until their twenties. At the peak of this practice in 1913, there were 70,000 ponies underground in Britain. In shaft mines, ponies were normally stabled underground[16] and fed on a diet with a high proportion of chopped hay and maize, coming to the surface only during the colliery's annual holiday.* Council Flats (Wikipedia)Q6: What are Rowling Readers to think of Robin's dream in chapter 22 (174 )when she's sleeping next to Murphy but dreaming of being at Ramsay's Silver with Strike and the showroom is filled with “cuddly toys instead of masonic swords and aprons”?* ‘Harry's Dreams:' Steve Vander Ark, Harry Potter LexiconQ7: The first bad news phone call that Robin takes from her mother Linda in Hallmarked Man is about the death of Rowntree. What is the connection between Robin's beloved Chocolate Labrador, Quakers, and Rowling's Golden Thread about ‘What is Real'?‘Troubled Blood: Poisoned Chocolates' (John Granger, 2021)‘Troubled Blood: The Secret of Rowntree' (John Granger, 2021)I explained in ‘Deathly Hallows and Penn's Fruits of Solitude‘ why Penn's quotation is a key to the Hogwarts Saga finale, how, in brief, the “inner light” doctrines of the Quakers and of non-conformist esoteric Christianity in general inform the story of Harry's ultimate victory in Dobby's grave over doubt and his subsequent ‘win' in his battle against death and the Dark Lord. I urge you to read that long post, one of the most important, I think, ever posted at HogwartsProfessor, for an idea of how central to Rowling's Christian faith the tenets of Quakerism really are as well as how this shows itself in Deathly Hallows. What makes the historical chocolate connection with the Quakers, one strongly affirmed in naming the Ellacott dog ‘Rowntree,' that much more interesting then is the easy segue from the “inner light” beliefs of the Christian non-conformists to the effect of chocolate on characters in Rowling and Galbraith novels. The conscience of man per the Quakers are our logos within that is continuous with the Logos fabric of reality, the Word that brings all things into existence and the light that is in every man (cf., the Prologue to St John's Gospel). Our inner peace and fellowship, in this view, depend on our identification with this transpersonal “inner light” rather than our ephemeral ego concerns. What is the sure way to recover from a Dementor attack, in which your worst nightmares are revisited? How does Robin deal with stress and the blues? Eat some chocolate, preferably a huge bar from Honeydukes or a chocolate brownie if you cannot get to Hogsmead.Access, in other words, the Quaker spiritual magic, the “inner light” peace of communion with what is Absolute and transcendent, a psychological effect exteriorized in story form by Rowling as the good feeling we have in eating chocolate. Or in the companionship and unconditional love of a beloved Labrador, preferably a chocolate Lab.Christmas Pig: The Blue Bunny' (John Granger, 2021)“Do you just want to live in nice houses?” asked Blue Bunny. “Or is there another reason you want to get in?”“Yes,” said Jack, before the Christmas Pig could stop him. “Somebody I need's in there. He's called DP and he's my favorite cuddly toy.”For a long moment, Jack and Blue Bunny stared into each other's eyes and then Blue Bunny let out a long sigh of amazement.“You're a boy,” he whispered. “You're real.”“He isn't,” said the panic-stricken Christmas Pig. “He's an action figure called—”“It's all right, Pig,” said Blue Bunny, “I won't tell anybody, I promise. You really came all the way into the Land of the Lost to find your favorite toy?” he asked Jack, who nodded.“Then I'll be your decoy,” said Blue Bunny. “It would be an honor” (169).The Bunny's recognition here of Jack as a messiah, sacrificial love incarnate, having descended into existence as a Thing himself from Up There where he was a source of the love that “alivens” objects, is one of, if not the most moving event in Christmas Pig. Note the words he uses: “You're real.”Rowling has used the word “real” twice before as a marker of reality transcending what we experience in conventional time and space, the sensible world. The first was in what she described as the “key” to the Harry Potter series, “lines I waited seventeen years to write” (Cruz), the end of the Potter-Dumbledore dialogue at King's Cross….In a Troubled Blood passage meant to echo that dialogue, with “head” and “backside” reflecting the characters inverted grasp of “reality,” Robin and Strike talk astrology:“You're being affected!” she said. “Everyone knows their star sign. Don't pretend to be above it.”Strike grinned reluctantly, took a large drag on his cigarette, exhaled, then said, “Sagittarius, Scorpio rising, with the sun in the first house.”“You're –” Robin began to laugh. “Did you just pull that out of your backside, or is it real?”“Of course, it's not f*****g real,” said Strike. “None of it's real, is it?” (Blood 242, highlighting in original). The Bunny's simple declaration, “You're real,” i.e., “from Up There,” the greater reality of the Land of the Living in which Things have their awakening in the love of their owners, clarifies these other usages. Dumbledore shares his wisdom with Harry that the maternal love which saved him, first at Godric's Hollow and then in the Forest, is the metaphysical sub-stance beneath, behind, and within all other reality. Strike gives Robin a dose of his skeptical ignorance and nominalist first principle that nothing is real but surface appearance subject to measurement and physical sensation, mental grasp of all things being consequent to that.Christmas Pig‘s “real” moment acts as a key to these others, one evident in the Bunny's response to the revelation of Jack's greater ontological status. He does a Dobby, offering to die for Jack as Jack has done in his descent into the Land of the Lost for DP, a surrender of self to near certain death in being given to the Loser he considers an “honor.” He acts spontaneously and selflessly as a “decoy,” a saving replacement in other words, for the “living boy” as Dobby did for the “Boy Who Lived.” The pathetic distraction that saved the DP rescue mission in Mislaid despite himself, crying out in desperation for his own existence, has metamorphized consequent to his experience with Broken Angel and in Jack's example, into a heroic decoy that allows Jack and CP to enter the City of the Missed. The Blue Bunny makes out better than the House-elf, too, and this is the key event of the book and the best evidence since the death of Lily Potter, Harry's defeat of Quirrell, and the demise of the Dark Lord that mother's love is Rowling's default symbolism for Christian love in her writing. The Bunny's choice to act as decoy, his decision to die to his ego-self, generates the life saving appearance of maternal love and its equivalent in the transference attachment a child feels for a beloved toy. The Johannine quality of the light that shines down on him from the Finding Hole and his Elijah-esque elevation nails down the Logos-love correspondence.EC: All through Hallmarked Man Robin is saying to herself, “I think I love Ryan, no, really, I know I love him…,” which of course is Rowling's way of signaling the conflict this character has in her feelings for Strike and for Murphy. See all the Healthcasts at https://www.biobalancehealth.com/healthcast-blog You will learn: What holds up new treatments for diseases and conditions How long the FDA sits on a known safe medical medication before it is released to the public. Why safe and effective drugs are NOT approved by the FDA Why doctors are forced to use medications off label How you can help During my 44 years of medical practice, I have encountered conditions for which there is no approved medication or surgical treatment available as recognized by the American College of OBGYN or the FDA. This situation can present challenges both for physicians managing these patients and for individuals seeking relief from their symptoms. This issue is not often addressed on Dr Oz, in the news, or at medical conferences. For many conditions, physicians wait for the development of approved medications or treatments, and in the meantime may inform patients that there is currently no treatment or cure available. Some doctors may attribute a patient's concerns to aging, stating that it is a universal experience. While this may be accurate, such explanations may not provide comfort to patients seeking solutions to their symptoms. This lack of helpful guidance can discourage individuals from seeking medical care when they feel their concerns are not acknowledged. This seems to result from insurance companies prioritizing cost savings by minimizing patient care.  Every year insurance companies decrease what they pay doctors for their services, while their expenses go up, and the Government requires more and more work behind the scenes like HIPPA, OSHA, and Clia requirements that costs more to deliver the same service.  If you have a problem with the time your doctor spends with you then blame the insurance companies whose profits rise every year…Soon doctors will do what I do and only take cash.  The practice of medicine is not working in a free market. While insurance limits the prescriptions of medication to those meds that are FDA Approved, the FDA and medical specialty colleges often delay approval of new, low-risk treatments for up to 20 years after their effectiveness is demonstrated. This lengthy process should be reconsidered to treat people who are ill and suffering, now. There is plenty of research in the medical journals that explain the safety of new and effective treatments that can save peoples' lives that are not FDA approved yet. The FDA is not interested in expediting the release of medication/ devices quickly to those people who need help now. They drag out the testing of a medicine that has been effective for years and may or may not approve it. On the flip side they have approved many drugs that later are found to have severe side effects, and they just change the warnings on the medication inserts. They don't take them off the market except in severe cases. Drugs that have worked treating patients successfully are being used but are not FDA approved. These “grandfathered drugs” don't need to go through the testing that new drugs go through because they work with few well-known risks. I use many if these medications because they are inexpensive for my patients and are often more effective than new meds for the same problem. One of the drugs that the FDA has not had to approve is Armour Thyroid, a natural thyroid replacement. My experience with treatments not approved by the FDA Armour Thyroid: Armour Thyroid (AT) has been prescribed by doctors to replace thyroid hormones for about 100 years. It is natural, made from Pig thyroid. It only comes from “medical Pigs” that are raised for medical purposes.  We use medical pigs for skin grafts, and other parts of the pig to treat human diseases like heart valve replacements.  Armour Thyroid is composed of the four thyroid hormones that humans make: T4, T3, T2, T1. The synthetic thyroid replacement, Synthroid/levothyroxine is only T4.  The active form of thyroid is T3, and it requires an enzyme to convert T4 into T3. If a person can't convert T4 into active T3 then nothing improves except the blood levels of T4, and TSH. The majority of women cannot convert T4 into T3. Therefore, if they take Synthroid or levothyroxine and their doctor only checks their TSH level and not the level of free T3 and free T4 to see if the Thyroid is working, then women are told that they are healed, yet they know they are not because none of their low thyroid symptoms are resolved. When this happens, doctors tell female patients that it is all in their heads and dismiss us when we tell them we are not cured with this synthetic T4 medication. Yet Synthroid is a chemical, and AT is natural from medical pigs, so the FDA is trying to Bann the only drug that has successfully treated millions of women. PS. Synthroid was not tested on women like many other drugs that were passed through the FDA before 2014! If you think this is a small problem, think again. Thyroid hormones are vital to human life, and the thyroid gland requires Iodine in the diet. The Midwest US has no Iodine in the soil or water. Therefore, this area is overburdened with hypothyroidism. I have been on AT for 50 years without complication and I have prescribed it thousands of times ever since I went into private practice.  AT works to relieve the symptoms of hypothyroidism for women and men, and it works better for women that the “new” drug Synthroid/levothyroxine, which is FDA approved. You ask how could the FDA approve a drug that doesn't successfully treat women? It is because Synthroid was not tested on women!  Until 2014 the FDA did not test women in the required drug trials.  AT works for us (women), Levothyroxine does not. Now the FDA wants to ban AT. It is not approved because it was around for decades before they started testing medications like they do now, and the history of successful treatment should stand on its own merit! Example 2: Bio-Identical Hormones BIH:  BIHs had not been approved by the FDA until recently and there was no announcement that they are now approved for women who have hormone deficiency symptoms or postmenopausal symptoms. Most doctors and women who have been afraid of the only hormones that can help them, bioidentical hormones, haven't yet been told that NOW, FINALLY the medical colleges and the FDA finally have quietly approved BI hormones.  There are no pure estradiol and pure testosterone pellets that are made by a drug company for women. My patients get their estradiol and testosterone pellets from a compounding pharmacy.  I have been prescribing BIH since 1985 without FDA approval because the oral estrogen formulations that were available at pharmacies caused weight gain and put women at high risk for blood clots. Non-oral BI hormones have fewer risks than FDA approved estrogens.  I waited more than 45 years for the FDA to approve BI hormones for treatment of women.  All those women in the last 45 years who were taking FDA approved estradiol and those who couldn't tolerate them have been harmed by FDA goals of never approving compounded or bio-identical hormones.  The delay has harmed 50% of American women. Example #3 Devices for Weight Loss I was involved in the discovery and testing of a unique device that stimulated acupuncture points with a TENS-unit-type patch connected to your cell phone for easy adjustment of your hunger or “fullness”. The FDA requires testing to approve any new device so the group of investors I was part of had to invest thousands of dollars for a device we already knew worked. The FDA told the investigators of all new devices who they should test, who they can't have in the study, and how long the testing should take. I found their parameters for the study of this device to be unrealistic. The women in our test group could not be taking hormones of any kind (birth control, ERT, HRT), and could not be on antidepressants, could not have diabetes or insulin resistance or be on any drug that assisted in weight loss. These women subjects had to be a certain BMI (level of obesity) and had to be tested repeatedly with weight and body composition measurements None of my patients who needed weight loss could participate.  Most GYN patients are on some medication or supplement, so the FDA made this study of our device so narrow that REAL WOMEN weren't tested! Sadly, we lost many women in the control group from the study because they were NOT losing weight while the ones on the device were obviously dropping pounds, so we had trouble maintaining test subjects. The testing phase of this simple device took 7 years! Our device works and no one will ever know about it or be able to use this non-medicinal weight loss device because when the FDA rejects your device you will be breaking the law if you produce and sell it directly to the public. It has no side effects or dangers..it just controls the amount you eat with stimulation of an acupuncture point. There are many ways to change this situation, and it takes years and billions of dollars to change the whole system of bringing treatments to patients quickly.  I'm afraid I won't see a revolution of the way we bring medicines and devices to market during my lifetime. Currently there is a 17-year delay between proving a drug or device works for a particular illness or condition and when it becomes available to doctors and patients. So what do we do in the meantime?  I seek treatments for patients who are unresponsive to traditional medicine by reading journals like Life Extension, that inform doctors and patients alike about new effective solutions for common medical complaints and diseases that the FDA has ignored or stymied with endless drug trials.  Life Extension Magazine highlights studies on new medications for diseases without an FDA approved solution and publicizes diagnostic tests often overlooked by mainstream publications because they are not yet FDA approved. The medical journals I read (New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Menopause, Metabolism and Endocrinology, Journal of Age management, to name a few) offer treatments for orphan diseases or even common problems that haven't been blessed by the FDA. It takes an average of 17 years from the culmination of research on a new drug, test or device until it is approved for use by the public! At the end of this Blog, I will give you a link to make your voice heard by signing a petition to shorten the approval of new treatments and medications from the average of 17 years to 3 years! My patients don't have time to wait for relief, and that may be the case for you as well. If you want to do something to help, please click this link and let the FDA know how you feel. It was a long weekend that consisted of a DJ gig, a date, and Pig's bday celebration, after catching you all up on that I revisit "the farm".  An idea I proposed on last Wednesdays show that would be a Eutopia (in my mind) for all of us to get away from our daily stresses.  We have a nice roundup about phone free fall, and I finish discussing a VERY dark article.  I am linking it here, but I want to warn that this is NOT light reading."The Baby Died.  Whose Fault Is It?" https://www.wired.com/story/the-baby-died-whose-fault-is-it-surrogate-pregnancy/
