Plans for big expansion at Derwent Valley pig farm
After a cancelled flight, three planes, and a lot of sweat (literal and metaphorical), Damian finally made it to Tales of the Cocktail 2025 in New Orleans — and lived to tell the tale... barely. In this slightly foggy, totally unfiltered solo episode, he shares his jet-lagged recap of the biggest cocktail event on the planet. From Speed Rack chaos and legendary frozen Irish coffees at Erin Rose to Buckfast cocktails, light-up ice cubes, and back massages courtesy of Campari — it's all here in glorious, semi-chronological detail.Expect stories about Team Ireland's iconic takeover, wild brand parties, heartfelt shoutouts to bar world legends, and a curtain call at Pig & Punch. This one's a love letter to the industry and the people who make it so damn fun.
In this episode, I sit down with celebrated South African novelist and playwright Damon Galgut, a literary voice I've admired for years. Damon Galgut is the acclaimed author of The Promise, winner of the 2021 Booker Prize, and has been shortlisted for the prestigious literary award three times over the course of his writing career. We discuss his lifelong relationship with literature, his unique approach to fiction writing, and how his novels grapple with themes of identity, morality, and the political realities of South Africa. Whether you're a passionate reader, a writer yourself, or simply someone who loves discovering new books, this conversation offers rare insight into the creative mind behind some of the most powerful contemporary literary fiction.Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading!Damon Galgut's four books were:Pig, Roald Dahl (1960)In the Heart of the Country, by J.M. Coetzee (1977)Blood Meridian, Cormac McCarthy (1985)The Emigrants, W.G. Sebald (1992)
The adventures of Barbara and Tom Good in Surbiton brought self-sufficiency to the small screens of the nation. Fifty years on from the airing of that first episode of The Good Life, Leyla Kazim is about to embark on her own sustainable living dream as she seeks to live off the land when she moves from London to Portugal. So what lessons can she learn from The Goods about food production – whether that's animal husbandry or growing-your-own? And will she succeed when she can't even speak the language? Leyla visits Groundswell, the Regenerative Agriculture Festival, in urgent search of advice. She speaks to Andy Cato from Wildfarmed, Rob Hopkins of the Transition Network and Helen Browning from the Soil Association. She also explores the forest garden of Martin Crawford in Devon as she plans her own food forest.Produced by Robin Markwell for BBC Audio in Bristol.Contains clips of The Good Life from Series 1, Episode 1 "Plough Your Own Furrow", Series 1 Episode 2 "Say Little Hen..." and Series 1 Episode 4 "Pig's Lib"

What began as a $4-an-hour summer gig at Western Pest has grown into Hoffman's Exterminating, a six-branch powerhouse ranked among PCT's Top 100—and CEO Bill Hoffman is still at the helm. Certified as an entomologist and PCQI, Bill joins the Blue-Collar Twins to unpack how pig-farm discipline, union-shop lessons, and a “coach-not-tech” mindset fueled steady, one-to-three-hires-per-year growth—and landed Hoffman's as the official pest-control partner of the Philadelphia Eagles. You'll hear: Door-Knock Origins – mortgaging sweat equity into a one-man startup while moonlighting at a deli and landscaping crew.Coach's Playbook – shifting from “crawl-space hero” to head coach and writing SOPs that free his team to execute.Eagles & MLS Deals – the referral chain—from a mom-and-pop acquisition to MLS partner to NFL sidelines—that proves community karma pays.Culture Moat – 20-year employees earn lifetime health insurance; paid volunteer hours keep staff and community for life.Seasonality Hacks – 55 % commercial mix, exclusion division, and weather “audibles” that keep 70 techs busy through Northeast winters.Mission Beyond Margins – board seats at two Ronald McDonald Houses, sustainability work at Lincoln Financial Field, and why “quality over quantity” still drives every decision. Stick around for Bill's blunt advice on moving from technician mindset to $30 million CEO—and why the best companies know when to act big and when to act small. Pig out on pork belly with Curtis C. Chen as we discuss how he discovered Star Trek through the bars of his crib, how the superspy star of his Kangaroo trilogy was born, what it was like being critiqued by Pat Murphy and Ursula K. Le Guin when he was starting out, how taking voice acting lessons kickstarted his desire to write, the way to tell when it's time to quit your day job (or not), how his nearly five-years-long flash fiction story-a-week project began, his creative solution for referencing the 20th century in his future series, an intriguing exercise for writers when watching TV shows based on the written word, why he went indie for the third book in his series, and much more.

I am back from my 4th of July in the Hamptons, and I have updates. Summer of outside is working her magic as I am flush with some really good updates for you all! In this fast-moving, fraud-fighting episode of Talking Real Money, Tom Cock is joined by longtime consumer advocate Herb Weisbaum (aka The ConsumerMan) to expose two of the fastest-growing scams in the U.S.: predatory solar sales and the “pig butchering” crypto scam. Herb details the dangerous combination of shady sales reps and shadowy financing pushing overpriced, underperforming solar systems door-to-door. Then, the duo dives into long-con crypto scams, deepfake romance cons, and the weaponization of AI for fraud. Herb doesn't hold back—calling crypto “sheer stupidity” and buy-now-pay-later schemes a gateway to regret. Podcast Episode Summary: “Pig Ears: Why Gunky Isn't Gross” In this episode of the Pet Pig Podcast, Autumn addresses a common concern among pig owners: gunky pig ears. While dark, greasy earwax might seem alarming—especially to dog and cat owners—Autumn explains that in pigs, it's completely normal and actually serves as a natural defense mechanism. Pig ears are open to dirt and debris, so this thick wax helps protect the inner ear. Autumn emphasizes that unless a pig is showing signs of discomfort like head shaking, scratching, or head tilt, there's usually no cause for concern. She offers safe ear-cleaning tips—like gently wiping the outer ear with a warm cloth or a little coconut oil—while warning against deep cleaning or using liquids in the ear canal, which can lead to infection. The episode wraps up with reminders to start ear care early, be gentle, and embrace the fact that clean-looking ears aren't the goal—protected ears are. Gunky pig ears are not gross—they're protective. Skip the deep clean and let nature do its job. Dean and Alison are just a day away from the Little House on the Prairie Cast Reunion at Columbia State Historic Park—but there's still plenty of time to recap one of the funniest episodes in Little House history! This week, we dig into “Here Come the Brides” (Season 4), where we come to a shocking realization: almost every Little House wedding is a surprise wedding. Seriously—BOOM. No invitations. No planning. Just, “Surprise! You're hitched!”This episode has it all: Nellie in full teenage heat (seriously, someone hand her a fan), Mrs. Oleson attempting homicide, and little Willy not giving even half a hoot. Pig farming somehow becomes sexy, Miss Beadle (the fabulous Charlotte Stewart) becomes a Mrs., and Nellie is crowned the Pig Queen of Minnesota…for approximately ten minutes.Alison shares some epic behind-the-scenes stories—how Jonathan Gilbert came up with that pratfall, what it was like working with “Luke,” and the sneaky way Charlotte helped cast her future husband in the show. She also reflects (with just a tiny bit of cringing) on just how, uh… aggressively enthusiastic Nellie was in this one. It's pure comedy gold. And of course—join us on Patreon, where Alison spills even more tea about this episode. Trust us, it's worth it.Links and Resources:Haven't signed up for Patreon yet? Then things take a turn into some dating updates, cringe texts, and a caller gives us the most epic Summer of Outside story involving male Greek strippers.
