Follow The Looking Glass on iHeartRadio - https://ihr.fm/3LG5QTZFollow on Apple Podcasts - https://apple.co/3B0WQE6Follow Everywhere Else - https://bit.ly/3M27WPsIn the pre-dawn hours of February 17, 1970, military police on the Fort Bragg army base, in North Carolina, received a panicked phone call from a man identifying himself as Cpt. Jeffrey MacDonald. Struggling to get the words out, MacDonald haltingly and breathlessly repeated his address –– 544 Castle Drive –– along with the word “stabbed.” When the MPs arrived at 544 Castle Drive minutes later, they encountered a scene of staggering brutality. MacDonald's wife and two young daughters had been hacked and beaten to death in their respective bedrooms, there was blood on the walls and ceiling of the apartment, and someone had written the word “PiG,” in blood, on the headboard of the bed in the master bedroom. On seeing that word, “PiG,” military investigators all had the same thought: “PiG” is what had been written in blood on Sharon Tate's front door six months earlier, after the Manson Family had slaughtered Tate and her houseguests on Cielo Drive, in Los Angeles. Had the Manson Family come to North Carolina? If Jeffrey MacDonald was to be believed, perhaps they had. MacDonald told investigators that a group of at least three men and one woman had broken into the apartment and attacked him and his family. Although these assailants had stabbed and beaten MacDonald, leaving him with a partially collapsed lung, they had left him alive after knocking him unconscious. Was the story MacDonald told investigators true? How should we go about answering that question? Follow us through the door of these questions and into the wild world of the Jeffrey MacDonald case, where things are not always as they seem. Allegedly, “beef and venison causes inflammation, my recommended proteins were chicken Turkey rabbit squirrel and fish.” Do you have any literature on the blood type diet, and is there anything to it? I'm almost exclusively beef + fruit, but I'm curious for my friend. -Matt Vitamin Capsules and additives Question from Ralph: hi robb and nikki - love your show What do you think about veggie capsules and additives added to them like sunflower lecithin (from seed oil) and microcrystaline cellulose etc.? I have read that hypromellose veggie capsules are like plastic or glue and can lead to headache, poor nutrient absorption, dehydration, constipation and fatigue. Small amount per capsule, but can the accumulated effects be negative if taking a number of capsules over a long time? thanks. Ralph The Road Not Traveled Mark says: Hi both, Love the show. You've helped me in many ways. Thank you. Listening to a few older episodes, as a passing comment, Robb has mentioned a few times that he once considered joining the military / having a crack at becoming a SEAL. (Though I appreciate this was never _deeply_ explored, it seems to have been a back-of-mind consideration.) Robb having turned 50 last year, how does he look back on this life decision / counterfactual? Any regrets not exploring it? I'm asking as someone who's recently turned 30, and is considering (with what feels like a closing window of opportunity) joining the military as a reservist. Today we have two very special guests. Michael Sarnoski, a writer/Director whose debut film is none other than PIG — starring Nicolas Cage playing a culinary Buddha in a beautifully restrained performance alongside a frenetically ambitious Alex Wolff—it's co-written by Vanessa Block and I think it's the first in a sub-genre I like to call Chef-Noir. My other guest is PIG's editor Brett Bachman (who also edited MANDY & THE COLOR OUT OF SPACE). He's seen more sides of Nicolas Cage than most of us can comprehend. This is a great conversation that lets you in on the key collaboration between director and editor, and in this case, the result was a fantastic film. Please listen, enjoy, and share! Link in Bio! ***SPOILER WARNING!!! AS WITH ALL SPECIAL EDITION WE WILL BE DISCUSSING SPECIFIC PLOT POINTS***Every trailer for Renfield made a few things clear. The film was going to be silly and it was going to be bloody. Very very bloody. There are lots of great comedy-horror movies, but when the mix does not work, it makes for a bad viewing experience. We talk about how well it worked here and how it is closer to The Naked Gun than Nosferatu.Another big part of the trailers was the support group that Renfield appears to be a part of. They played a bigger part that some may expect. Even more shocking, they showcase some of the best writing in Renfield. But was it a little too much or the perfect addition to an already silly movie?Renfield does not shy away from violence and has what will end up being some of the bloodiest scenes of the year. It was like a midnight movie brought to mainstream audiences. The film definitely knows it audience, not only ramping up the violence, but giving little in the way of a backstory. It is easily one of the most refreshing decisions in cinema in recent years.Of course, the most buzz will be around Cage. The internet's favorite actor puts on another fantastic performance. We compare it to some of this other roles and gush about how Cage would be a mega star in any era. Does he live up to expectations or are we simply fanboying out?Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Paranormal Pendle Podcast host and author Craig Bryant, joins Andy and Neil on the Paranormal Peep Show for the April 2023 edition. Craig talks about his time working as a barman in the Conservative Club in Accrington, Lancashire, and witnessing a dark ghostly shadow man figure staring at him through a serving hatch. This Hatted shadow man figure had been sighted by other members of staff there in preceding years. Also discussed is the Pendle Witch Trials, which is local to where Craig lives, and how the punishments for just being accused of being a witch led to inhumane treatment and finally death by hanging. In Scotland, they put witches in barrels with internal spikes inside and rolled them down the hill resulting in death. Neil talks about the pig in the middle ages, that was tried as a witch in Germany, presumably resulting in a hog roast at the end!Various ghost theories are discussed, and examined, asking why ghosts appear mostly in doorways. UFOs are also mentioned along with Polgergiest activities, including a haunted piano. Telling the tale of my flying career, I left you at the end of my F/A18 conversion course as we reformed the No 77 Royal Australian Air Force Squadron with their brand new Hornets. So far our one and only aircraft A21-5 was being shared around and everyone wanted a piece of it, either to fly or learn how to fix it. The squadron execs were pretty busy dealing with the job of getting the new squadron personnel squared away so the rest of us got more than our share of flying. There wasn't much we could do with a single jet but I was happy just to play with a multi million dollar toy and get used to my new home. In both the military and law enforcement universes, there's often an understandable amount of friction between the people out where the action is and those who help them get there and support them in their work. In this episode, Jim and Mike discuss ways to smooth cooperation between the people behind the scenes and the officer on the street or the pilot in the seat. When you really think about it, everybody's supporting somebody and nobody's completing the mission alone. Learning to distinguish between your “boss” and your “customer” can help you focus on operational success whether you're the one calling in the air support, flying the plane, or keeping the plane flyable. As the saying goes, the chicken is involved in breakfast while the pig is committed…but breakfast ain't happening without both doing their jobs. On episode 87 of Outside The Studio: It can be easy to think, "If I go on a diet, then I can get away with not putting in the work of exercising," however, that isn't the key to a truly healthy life. Tessa Tovar and Anastacia Marx de Salcedo chat about Anastacia's new book, Eat Like a Pig, Run Like a Horse and what it looks like to balance diet and proper exercise. Anastacia Marx de Salcedo is an author of several works, including Eat Like a Pig, Run Like a Horse. She works as a public health consultant and has done stints as a newsmagazine publisher and public policy researcher. Timestamps (01:40) Eat Like a Pig, Run Like a Horse (03:40) Anastacia's journey with MS (09:10) Perfect diet culture and exercise (14:30) Swimming to running (17:35) Sauna vs exercise (22:45) Sedentary lifestyles (29:00) How much is enough? (32:50) Always hungry (36:35) Daily food intake (41:00) Sugary drinks (42:30) BMI (45:00) Exercise routine (48:35) The future of health Key Takeaways 1. Many people may take the approach that they can have a decent diet but not exercise often, however, this isn't an ideal plan for proper health. "Eat like a pig and run like a horse," means that if you eat a mediocre diet, then you better run like a horse, because movement and exercise are more important in our overall health than our food intake. 2. Sedentary lifestyles are easily made by our TVs and other devices. Having a routine, especially daily, will help break that pattern and encourage better exercise habits. Anastacia runs four miles a day, but she didn't get that magic number from anywhere, it just felt right. Finding an activity that fits with your preferences will help build that routine. 3. Diet fads are always trending, from vegan to keto to paleo and so on. But, there is no right answer, especially when there isn't going to be a one-size-fits-all. Finding a balance with proper nutrients that fit your body and activities is the best solution.
