I was going to be a writer. Little did I suspect that he wanted to send me to a student conference on metallurgy where I could seek the fellowship of like-minded teens on a minimally supervised road-trip to the Big City. Undeterred by my abrupt negative response, he grumbled, “Well, you're interested in mining your own business, aren't you?” And he sent me anyway. Teatime with Miss Liz March 21st, 7 pm EST. Joining is a returning guest from seasons 3-4, Gerald Everett Jones - Show Host and Author with a new book and a new T-E-A. Meet my Guest, Gerald Everett Jones. Gerald Everett Jones is a freelance writer who lives in Santa Monica, California. Preacher Stalls the Second Coming is his fourteenth novel. He has been a longtime Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC) board member and host of the GetPublished! Radio podcast. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors from the College of Letters, Wesleyan University, where he studied under novelists Peter Boynton (Stone Island), F.D. Reeve (The Red Machines), and Jerzy Kosinski (The Painted Bird, Being There). The issue of book banning is exploding across this country. Parents, activists, and lawmakers all demand the removal of certain books from schools, universities, and even public libraries. The American Library Association received an unprecedented 330 reports of book challenges last fall. The tactics and objections of these challenges push many to oppose the removal of some books, saying it violates the rights of those who want access to them. The Penguin Random House CEO recently pledged to donate thousands to the free speech organization PEN America to combat book banning. What do authors think about this recent phenomenon? Award-winning author Gerald Everett Jones finds it striking and potentially harmful. Gerald has just released his latest book, Preacher Raises the Dead, which takes on several controversial issues, including: * Can an agnostic be a practicing minister? * Should churches take views on political parties or candidates? * Is Near-Death Experience (NDE) physical or metaphysical? * How do “right to die” laws affect the treatment of patients in long-term coma? … and much more. The Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC) presented this informal chat with award-winning author Gerald Everett Jones. Gerald and host Steven Sanchez discuss the inner life of the "close observer" and how those feelings inform an author's work.
We're talking about Books That Make You Discover Yourself on an Exotic Adventure Books take us away, to different places, different times, cultures and people. The external adventure is often just the backdrop to the character's more internal journey of self-discovery. The great thing about books is how we can peer through the eyes of the protagonist, no matter how flawed they might be. Award-winning author Gerald Everett Jones is back to talk about his latest book, “Harry Harmabee's Kenyan Sundowner”, which tells the story of a lonely and misguided widower who travels to East Africa in search of a good time. What he encounters instead is a whole new reason to live. Gerald is a freelance writer based in Santa Monica, California. He is a member of the Writers Guild of America, the Dramatists Guild, Women's National Book Association, and Film Independent (FIND), as well as a director of the Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC). He is also a masterful editor and contributor to the Webby-Award nominated The BookFest. Find out more on Books That Make You. You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Have you ever loved a book so much that you wished you could sit and talk with the author? Ask them questions about the plot, about how they came up with their ideas, the backstory, and maybe you wanted to know if after the final page, your favorite character, really did live happily ever after? Gerald Everett Jones discusses this topic with host Desireé Duffy on this episode of the Books That Make You Show. Book festivals and events are amazing opportunities for booklovers to see and meet their favorite authors. They can get autographs and take selfies. It is fun hanging out and listening to them speak on panels. The literary crowd at events like the LA Times Festival of Books, or BookCon in New York, and even the Books That Make You annual literary tea, the Beach Bound Book Bash, are a lot of fun to connect with. Right now, hanging out isn’t as easy as it once was because of social distancing. That doesn’t mean we still can’t be social, though. The LA BookFest is an event created for booklovers from around the world, and it brings together authors and thought leaders, journalists, and publishing pros to interact with the reading and writing community. Gerald Everett Jones is participating on two panels at LA BookFest. Plus, he has an amazing bookish podcast, is an author an editor and more. Gerald Everett Jones is also a member of the Writers Guild of America, the Dramatists Guild, Women’s National Book Association, and Film Independent (FIND), as well as a director of the Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC). He is the host of the GetPublished! Radio Show, and his book reviews are published on the Web by Splash Magazines Worldwide.
