Europe is recalibrating its strategy in the global shift to electric vehicles (EVs), with China streaking ahead while the US is facing significant headwinds, according to the latest EY Mobility Lens Forecaster. This AI-powered model projects light-duty vehicle sales through 2050 across the three largest markets globally, Europe, China and the US. Across these three markets, battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales are expected to exceed 50% by 2034, marking a pivotal moment. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are forecast to maintain a c.30% share through 2036, underscoring their role as a key bridge to full electrification. However, the pace of the change across the three markets varies significantly, with China expected to achieve a 50% share of new energy vehicles (NEV) sold in 2025. Europe's EV sales are forecast to surpass petrol and diesel by 2028, before crossing 50% by 2032 under tightening emissions rules. In contrast, the US is now projected to reach 50% EV adoption by 2039 (a five-year delay from previous projections) amid policy delays, high costs, and charging gaps. Ireland's EV market continues to evolve with hybrid vehicles playing an increasingly important role in bridging the gap for many consumers while infrastructure expands to support wider EV adoption. The latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) data shows a strong rebound in EV uptake in 2025, with new electric vehicle registrations rising by 64% in July of this year compared to the same month in 2024, and a 27% increase in the first half of the year. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles also saw a 110% year-on-year increase in June, highlighting their role in maintaining momentum. According to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), this upward trend continued into August, with battery electric vehicle registrations accelerating by nearly 70% year-on-year, reinforcing the strength of Ireland's EV recovery. This recovery follows a temporary slowdown in 2024. However, targeted government support, including tiered grants, toll discounts and fleet electrification schemes, is helping to address some well-documented challenges. Ireland's EV transition strategy has been supported by Government grant schemes, which have sought to accelerate the availability of EV Charging Infrastructure - grant schemes administered by Transport Infrastructure Ireland are supporting the rollout of 131 high-powered chargers across 17 roadside locations and 175 fast and ultra-fast chargers across 53 hubs by the end of 2025. Julia Ann Corkery, EY Ireland Partner and Transport Leader, says: "Globally, the EV transition is advancing, but unevenly. China benefits from stable policy and a robust EV ecosystem. Europe is on a steady path under strict emissions targets; however, the pace of adoption will be slower than was previously anticipated, with hybrid technologies playing an increasingly important role in bridging the gap to full electrification in the short to medium term. The US, meanwhile, faces policy uncertainty, high costs and infrastructure gaps. Electric vehicles are central to Ireland's transport decarbonisation strategy, and it's encouraging to see strong momentum reflected in the CSO and SIMI data from 2025, as well as the broader trends across Europe. The rise in EV registrations, alongside shifting consumer preferences and the rollout of additional charging infrastructure, signals a dynamic market which is beginning to mature. As battery electric vehicle adoption accelerates towards 2032, Ireland is well-positioned to benefit, particularly as infrastructure and affordability measures continue to evolve to support wider uptake. In the interim period, hybrid vehicles will be expected to play a central role in bridging the gap on the transition to zero-emission vehicles." Europe: Rebounding after 2027 The EY Forecaster suggests that in Europe, economic pressures, reduced incentives, and softer emissions penalties will dampen BEV growth through 2027. But stricter CO2 l...
The U.S. job market is experiencing a significant slowdown, with only 22,000 jobs added in August, marking the first net job loss since December 2020. The unemployment rate has slightly increased to 4.3%, indicating a decline in hiring and job seeker enthusiasm. Despite these challenges, the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the labor market is not leading to widespread job losses. A recent survey revealed that only 1% of service firms reported job cuts due to AI, while many companies are retraining existing employees instead of laying them off. The tech sector, however, is seeing a rise in job postings requiring AI skills, reflecting a shift in hiring practices.Small businesses are facing increasing challenges as confidence in their marketing efforts declines, despite higher investments. A report indicates that only 18% of small and mid-sized businesses are very confident in their marketing outcomes, down from 27% the previous year. Many businesses are turning to AI tools and email marketing, but they struggle with limited time for marketing activities. Economic pressures, including rising costs and tariffs, are also impacting operational strategies, leading to concerns about the effectiveness of marketing investments.Tariffs are causing disruptions in tech pricing and delaying PC upgrades, with the removal of the de minimis exemption leading to increased costs for imported goods. This has resulted in price hikes for various products, including luxury items and personal computers. Despite the impending end of support for Windows 10, many businesses are hesitant to upgrade to Windows 11, opting instead for extended support packages. The rise of AI-enabled personal computers is notable, but the associated costs due to tariffs are making these upgrades more challenging for businesses.Broadcom is consolidating its control over VMware, transitioning a significant portion of its customers to subscription-based services. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the VMware Cloud Foundation offerings. Meanwhile, a new integration between DarcyIQ and Kaseya Autotask aims to improve operational efficiency for managed service providers by streamlining ticket and project management through natural language conversations. This highlights the need for smarter tools in the industry, as third-party solutions are increasingly filling gaps left by platform vendors. In this Week 34 edition of the GMS Weekly Podcast, we cover the latest developments in the global ship recycling markets, with updates from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey. This week's theme, Method to the Madness, highlights frustrating conditions, softer pricing, and uneven buyer activity across the sub-continent. Global Overview: Oil edged up 0.2% to USD 63 per barrel as Ukraine conflict pressures continued. The Baltic Dry Index rose 2.7%, with gains across capes, panamaxes, and smaller segments. Supply of recycling candidates remains limited despite recent LNG and tanker arrivals. Prices have cooled and are holding at lower post-HKC levels. Bangladesh: Market flat with no new arrivals or deliveries reported. Demand for smaller LDT units is absent, while only select large capes draw interest. Recycled steel continues to stockpile as mills import cheaper raw material. The Taka weakened to 121.65 against the dollar. Economic and political uncertainty persists, keeping buyers away. India: Alang remains the busiest and most reliable recycling destination despite sanctions and tariff pressure. About 140,000 LDT currently at anchorage or delivered, including another LNG and tanker. Steel prices improved slightly to USD 436 per ton; the Rupee firmed to 87.33. Concerns remain about Chinese steel imports undercutting domestic values. Pakistan: Still offering the highest prices in the region at USD 622 per ton. Market activity is muted with limited arrivals and few workable candidates. Yards with DASRs are holding back for larger vessels. The Rupee strengthened to 283.15, but inflation and investor outflows add risk. Pakistan remains the best-priced location for quick deals if supply improves. Turkey: The Lira slipped again to 40.91, briefly above 41. Government imposed a ban on direct vessel calls to and from Israel, cutting supply potential. Inflation is easing, but Aliaga's yards remain without new arrivals. Soho House is going private in a $2.7 billion deal led by MCR Hotels and CEO Tyler Morse, while billionaire Ron Burkle will remain its controlling shareholder; the move follows three straight profitable quarters for the global members-only club operator. At the same time, global hotel investment activity has slowed, with JLL reporting a 16% drop in transactions during the first half of the year as large, debt-heavy deals disappear and smaller select-service and extended-stay properties dominate. Separately, NYU researchers found that most people underestimate the climate impact of their actions, especially long-haul flights, suggesting airlines could play a larger role in educating travelers by providing clearer carbon data and highlighting lower-emission options. It's unthinkable. At a time when Americans are dealing with a staggering loss of life and were in need of immediate help from the federal government, they got put on hold. Why were search and rescue teams not allowed to set up near the flooding until days after it started? Because Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem decided she needs to personally authorize all costly contracts. Her policy slowed down FEMAs response during a critical time. Meanwhile, good people are out of a job for nothing. DOGE eliminated National Weather Service jobs, but now Trump's nominee to lead NOAA says he wants to hire people to fill those jobs again. Does it seem like a leadership failure? We'll discuss. We'll also look at the latest legal cases with former federal prosecutor, now defense attorney, David Katz.

Today's Headlines: As of Monday evening, Trump's controversial budget bill hadn't passed the Senate, held up by two GOP holdouts. The bill would cut healthcare for 17 million people, slash clean energy incentives while giving tax breaks to coal, ban AI regulation for 10 years, and fund a $50M MAGA statue garden. Elon Musk, critical of the bill, called it a “PORKY PIG PARTY.” Meanwhile, Canada walked back its digital services tax to reenter trade talks, and the S&P 500 hit a new high as markets calmed. Intercepted Iranian communications revealed U.S. strikes on their nuclear sites were less damaging than expected. Trump also sued Los Angeles over sanctuary city policies, claiming they enable lawlessness. Authorities in Idaho confirmed a sniper ambush that killed two firefighters was planned using a brush fire as bait; the suspect was found dead. "Give Outdoor Learning" is a first of its kind, statewide campaign that creates nature-based outings for the public. And because many programs are at risk due to budget cuts, it's also a fundraising campaign similar to Colorado Gives Day. CPR's Jenny Brundin speaks with an organizer from the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education and two young adults who share how nature has changed them. Then, five years after a state law took effect, why is it still a challenge to track use of force by Colorado law enforcement? And later, sorting out senior living options with Aging Matters.
Sean “Diddy” Combs is so confident he’ll beat the explosive federal case against him that he’s already planning a massive post-trial blowout — and in a shocking twist, insiders say he wants to invite the jury to say “thank you.” But while Diddy eyes a victory lap, Warner Bros. is scrambling after fans unearthed a steamy 2018 scene of new Superman star David Corenswet baring all in Affairs of State — a far cry from the squeaky-clean Clark Kent image the studio is trying to sell.
