Send us Fan MailThis week on the podcast Gerald Everette Jones stops by the show again to discuss his latest release Jonathan's Journal. We talk about how some choices made in WW1 still affect us today and more. *****Gerald Everett Jones lives in Santa Monica. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild and Women's National Book Association, as well as a board member of the Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC). He is a Film Independent (FILM) Fellow. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors from the College of Letters, Wesleyan University, where he studied under novelists Peter Boynton (Stone Island), F.D. Reeve (The Red Machines), and Jerzy Kosinski (The Painted Bird, Being There).”More about Jonathan's Journal: When a solitary art historian stumbles across a cryptic World War I diary among his mother's antiques, his life quietly implodes. In Jonathan's Journal, award-winning author Gerald Everett Jones invites readers on a richly emotional and historical journey that spans continents and generations. Through dual narratives—one modern, one set during the forgotten campaigns of the Great War in the Near East and India—Jones offers a haunting meditation on identity, duty, and the echoes of conflict that shape who we become. At the center of this literary novel is Jonathan Worthington, a middle-aged professor on sabbatical, whose discovery of an anonymous soldier's meticulously written journal ignites a quest for truth that blurs the line between past and present. The soldier, initially known only by the initials J.F.W., recounts experiences from the trenches of France to the deserts of Mesopotamia and India. As Jonathan deciphers the diary—with help from Elena, a mysterious librarian who abruptly left a position in the diplomatic corps—he suspects more than a historical connection; family secrets may lie hidden in Fred's sparse but emotionally loaded prose.Jones's fifteenth novel is both contemplative and adventurous, seamlessly blending historical research, literary fiction, and intimate personal reflection. Fans of Birdsong, The English Patient, and Possession will find themselves drawn into a world where archival mysteries illuminate inner truths.*****If you would like to contact the show Dauna@betertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX0ETs2wpOHbCuhUNr0XFTw?view_as=subscriberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomSupport the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedom©2026 Better To...Podcast with D. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Gerald Everett Jones, author of the book Jonathan's Journal. Gerald Everett Jones is a freelance writer who resides in Santa Monica, California. He writes mystery-thrillers and literary fiction for adults interested in intriguing stories. Jonathan's Journal is my fifteenth novel. I have 20+ book awards I am a board member of Writers & Publishers Network (WPN). Jones has received 20+ book awards, including six in 2020, seven in 2021, and six in 2022. His works often explore themes of morality, justice, humor, and human complexity across multiple genres and settings. Jones holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors from Wesleyan University, where he studied under notable novelists. He is also the host of the GetPublished! Radio Show and has contributed to the literary community as a book reviewer and radio host. His blog and podcast, Thinking About Thinking, continue to provide insights for readers and writers alike. In my book review, I stated Jonathan's Journal is a dual timeline historical fiction by Gerald Everett Jones. We meet Jonathan Worthington, an art historian, as he tries to discover why his mother had a WWI diary from a man with his initials. What was the connection? Jonathon hires Elena to help him understand the history. We also meet the man in the diary, a WWI soldier who Jonathan nicknames Fred. Through the reading of the journal, Jonathan and Elena's thoughts on what they've read and their knowledge of the history, and even Fred's inner thoughts that were never written down, the reader takes a journey to more thoroughly understand the war that didn't end all wars. But we also get to see the personal journey of Fred as he comes to terms with who he is and what he wants out life while simultaneously experiencing the same for Jonathan. Although touted as historical fiction, Jonathan's Journal has a lot in common with literary fiction speckled with splashes of romance and a bit of intrigue. This was a fun read. Today on The Cameron Journal, we're joined by Gerald Everett Jones. He is the author Jonathan's Journal. Here's a little bit about him: Gerald Everett Jones is a freelance writer who resides in Santa Monica, California. He writes mystery-thrillers and literary fiction for adults interested in intriguing stories. Jonathan's Journal is my fifteenth novel. He has 20+ book awards, is a board member of Writers & Publishers Network (WPN), and has received 20+ book awards, including six in 2020, seven in 2021, and six in 2022. His new book centers on a quiet but life-altering discovery—a World War I diary that forces a solitary scholar to confront buried family truths and reshape his identity. We talk about writing shop and much more about his book.
Amateur sleuth Evan Wycliff is a disillusioned divinity student who is fascinated by astrophysics and given up both. He's returned to his small-town farm roots in Southern Missouri. He is also disappointed in love. His beautiful fiancé was a brilliant Jewish scientist, a defense contractor who was killed in a rocket attack in Syria. These days Evan gets guest preacher gigs and uses his investigative skills as skip tracer for the local car and tractor dealership. In this second novel in the series, Evan counsels a boy who is afflicted with schizophrenia and has been accused of rape. Along with related abuses of the child welfare system, he uncovers a teen trafficking ring run out of a luxury casino resort by a Russian oligarch.“This is literature masquerading as a mystery. Carefully yet powerfully, Gerald Jones creates a small, stunning world in a tiny midwestern town, infusing each character with not just life but wit, charm and occasionally menace. This is the kind of writing one expects from John Irving or Jane Smiley.” - Marvin J. Wolf, author of the Rabbi Ben Mysteries, including A Scribe Dies in Brooklyn
The author's screenplay adaptation of Mr. Ballpoint was awarded a Film Independent (FILM) Fellowship in 2001 by Independent Feature Project / West Screenwriting Laboratory under the working title, "The Big Idea." Inspired by the true story. Included in the Prize-Winning Literary Fiction Series from LaPuerta Books and MediaIn 1945, Milton Reynolds introduced the ballpoint to the United States and triggered the biggest single-day shopping riot in history at Gimbels in Manhattan. The Reynolds International Pen Company made $5 million in eight weeks during the first non-wartime Christmas season. Thereafter, increasing competition from established companies such as Eversharp triggered several years of the "Pen Wars."
Winner of 7 Book Awards in Literary Fiction - Included in the Prize-Winning Literary Fiction Series from LaPuerta Books and MediaIntrigue on the white sands of the Indian Ocean. From the award-winning author of Clifford's Spiral. A lonely widower from Los Angeles buys a tour package to East Africa on the promise of hookups and parties. What he finds instead are new reasons to live. Aldo Barbieri, a slick Italian tour operator, convinces Harry to join a group of adventuresome “voluntourists.” In a resort town on the Indian Ocean, Harry doesn't find the promised excitement with local ladies. But in the supermarket he meets Esther Mwemba, a demure widow who works as a bookkeeper. The attraction is strong and mutual, but Harry gets worried when he finds out that Esther and Aldo have a history. They introduce him to Victor Skebelsky, rumored to be the meanest man in town. Skebelsky has a plan to convert his grand colonial home and residential compound into a rehab center – as a tax dodge. The scheme calls for Harry to head up the charity. He could live like a wealthy diplomat and it won't cost him a shilling! Harry has to come to terms with questions at the heart of his character: Is corruption a fact of life everywhere? Is all love transactional? Harry Harambee's Kenyan Sundowner is an emotional story of expat intrigue in Africa, reminiscent of The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene and The Constant Gardener by John le Carré. Praise for Clifford's Spiral (Independent Press Awards 2020 Distinguished Favorite in Literary Fiction) We've seen and noted the comparison of this author by other reviewers to literary giants like Roth and Vonnegut. And we can't disagree. Yet we feel there may be yet another strata for Gerald Everett Jones, who arguably is doing the best work of his career. We predict that he lacks only a mention in the The New York Review of Books or, better yet, Oprah, to become a nationwide best-selling author. Five-plus stars to Clifford's Spiral, a true literary novel if ever there was one. We say in all seriousness that if you only read one novel this year, this should be it. - Don Sloan, Publishers Daily Reviews Preacher Finds a Corpse (NYC Big Book Awards 2020 Winner in Mystery, IPA 2020 Distinguished Favorite in Mystery, Eric Hoffer 2020 Finalist in Mystery) This is literature masquerading as a mystery. Carefully yet powerfully, Gerald Jones creates a small, stunning world in a tiny midwestern town, infusing each character with not just life but wit, charm, and occasionally menace. This is the kind of writing one expects from John Irving or Jane Smiley. - Marvin J. Wolf, author of the Rabbi Ben Mysteries, including A Scribe Dies in Brooklyn
Gerald Everett Jones won six book awards in 2020, seven in 2021, and six in 2022: 2022 - Independent Press Award (IPA) Distinguished Favorite in General Fiction and Reader's Choice 5 Star in Fiction for "Harry Harambee's Kenyan Sundowner." Teatime with Miss Liz on June 11th, 3 pm EST, Bringing you all an important message on the Elephant Matriarch Project and her book “Terriers in the Jungle” The best-selling author and Co-Founder George Umano Meet My Guest: Georja Umano is an animal activist who has organized, spoken and written about animals and animal causes in the US, Italy and Kenya, especially in the fields of elephant and wildlife conservation. She is also a film, TV and theatre actress, stand-up comedian, teacher and journalist. She has earned a B.A. in English Literature at LeMoyne College and an M.A. in Educational Theatre at New York University. Her acting career started in New York, and she always leaned toward comedy. She appeared on all the episodes of a sitcom with Ed Asner, “Off the Rack,” played the title character in an award-winning short film, “The Godmother,” and was nominated for awards for her theatrical performance in “Kaballah” with Avery Shriver. She has performed stand-up comedy in Los Angeles, San Diego, and ten other states. Things changed when she got a dog, and she quickly became an avid animal advocate and feature journalist. She produced and starred in a cable show/web series with her dog, “The Georja and Marcello Show.” Soon afterward, she got involved with elephants. She went to Africa six times. The last time she decided to move there was when she brought her two rescue dogs and her husband, author Gerald Everett Jones. In her new novel, TERRIERS IN THE JUNGLE, she wrote about many of their adventures, including her plans to create “The Elephant Matriarch School” in Kenya. The novel is narrated by her dogs! As a young woman, Georja experienced a vivid past-life regression in which she was a young child whose mother was killed by an elephant hunter, and she was raised by elephants. While staying in Kenya, she realized that she was an elephant in that past life. Now, she knows many elephants in Kenya, has adopted many orphaned elephants, and has hugged many of them. TERRIERS IN THE JUNGLE won First Prize in Animal Fiction at The BookFest 2022. Many people say this book should become a movie, and Georja is working on that project now.Georjaumano.comElephantMatriarach.org#teatimewithmissliz #misslizteatime #makingadifferencetogether #animalactivist#elephants#kenya #actress #awardwinning #author #joinus #livestreaming #podcastshow #likefollowshare

Teatime with Miss Liz March 21st, 7 pm EST. Joining is a returning guest from seasons 3-4, Gerald Everett Jones - Show Host and Author with a new book and a new T-E-A. Meet my Guest, Gerald Everett Jones. Gerald Everett Jones is a freelance writer who lives in Santa Monica, California. Preacher Stalls the Second Coming is his fourteenth novel. He has been a longtime Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC) board member and host of the GetPublished! Radio podcast. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors from the College of Letters, Wesleyan University, where he studied under novelists Peter Boynton (Stone Island), F.D. Reeve (The Red Machines), and Jerzy Kosinski (The Painted Bird, Being There). The issue of book banning is exploding across this country. Parents, activists, and lawmakers all demand the removal of certain books from schools, universities, and even public libraries. The American Library Association received an unprecedented 330 reports of book challenges last fall. The tactics and objections of these challenges push many to oppose the removal of some books, saying it violates the rights of those who want access to them. The Penguin Random House CEO recently pledged to donate thousands to the free speech organization PEN America to combat book banning. What do authors think about this recent phenomenon? Award-winning author Gerald Everett Jones finds it striking and potentially harmful. Gerald has just released his latest book, Preacher Raises the Dead, which takes on several controversial issues, including: * Can an agnostic be a practicing minister? * Should churches take views on political parties or candidates? * Is Near-Death Experience (NDE) physical or metaphysical? * How do “right to die” laws affect the treatment of patients in long-term coma? … and much more. Before a hushed audience at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), our show host Gerald Everett Jones discloses secrets behind The Baptism by 19th century painter Julius Leblanc Stewart. Gerald Everett Jones is author of Bonfire of the Vanderbilts, which tells the secrets behind this painting. The painting, which LACMA now owns, shows a christening in a plush private parlor, attended by 21 people. The portraits are so realistic, the individuals should be recognizable. For more than a century, the rumor in the art world has been this is a Vanderbilt family event. However, the heirs and the curators of their estates all deny any association with the painting. Gerald's original research discloses why a bitter feud between Cornelius Vanderbilt II and banker J. P. Morgan is at the heart of the matter. He fictionalized this sensational story in Bonfire of the Vanderbilts. Want to break into print? Get help publishing your book at GetPublishedRadio.com.
