Teatime with Miss Liz March 21st, 7 pm EST. Joining is a returning guest from seasons 3-4, Gerald Everett Jones - Show Host and Author with a new book and a new T-E-A. Meet my Guest, Gerald Everett Jones. Gerald Everett Jones is a freelance writer who lives in Santa Monica, California. Preacher Stalls the Second Coming is his fourteenth novel. He has been a longtime Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC) board member and host of the GetPublished! Radio podcast. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors from the College of Letters, Wesleyan University, where he studied under novelists Peter Boynton (Stone Island), F.D. Reeve (The Red Machines), and Jerzy Kosinski (The Painted Bird, Being There). The issue of book banning is exploding across this country. Parents, activists, and lawmakers all demand the removal of certain books from schools, universities, and even public libraries. The American Library Association received an unprecedented 330 reports of book challenges last fall. The tactics and objections of these challenges push many to oppose the removal of some books, saying it violates the rights of those who want access to them. The Penguin Random House CEO recently pledged to donate thousands to the free speech organization PEN America to combat book banning. What do authors think about this recent phenomenon? Award-winning author Gerald Everett Jones finds it striking and potentially harmful. Gerald has just released his latest book, Preacher Raises the Dead, which takes on several controversial issues, including: * Can an agnostic be a practicing minister? * Should churches take views on political parties or candidates? * Is Near-Death Experience (NDE) physical or metaphysical? * How do “right to die” laws affect the treatment of patients in long-term coma? … and much more. We discuss the life and times of John Kennedy Toole (1937-1969), the influential author behind the classic novel, A Confederacy of Dunces. We're joined by independent writer Dan Baltic, who teaches us some of the lessons he has learned from Toole's life and career.Dive into the captivating world of A Confederacy of Dunces, as we discuss the book's main character, Ignatius J Riley; learn how Toole's persistence (or lack thereof) serves as a cautionary tale for contemporary independent writers; as well as the parallels between Toole's struggles and Dan's rise as an independent author on the internet. Dan shares his experience building an audience on Twitter, publishing his first novel, and the lessons he's learned himself. We try to unlock the strategies and goals of dissident writers, and how independent authors like Dan are able to make a living and continue producing great art. Back in 2014, I met today's guest as we were both working on a workshop of a new musical based on the hit movie FIRST WIVES CLUB. We both continued on with the show as it traveled to Chicago for its out of town pre-Broadway tryout. However, the musical never made it to New York. But as you'll hear in my conversation today with Terron Brooks, the journey of most performers is never a straight line and certainly there are many more failures and disappointments than successes. Terron certainly knows something about success: he's a two time NAACP award nominee and widely recognized for his critically acclaimed role as the great Eddie Kendricks in the Emmy award winning NBC miniseries The Temptations, not to mention his Broadway shows and concerts around the country. Through music, acting, writing, and speaking, Terron wants to encourage everyone to reach their highest potential, including himself. And today he's brought us three stories on how he's had to learn that lesson the hard way: Story #1 (04:34) Managing his own expectations of success after the fame of starring in the The Temptations. Story #2 (26:26) Confronting the possible loss of his voice and what that would mean for his career. Story #3 (43:02) How his son's autism diagnosis helped him learn to face his own pains and disappointments and become a better father and husband. The Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC) presented this informal chat with award-winning author Gerald Everett Jones. Gerald and host Steven Sanchez discuss the inner life of the "close observer" and how those feelings inform an author's work.
We're talking about Books That Make You Discover Yourself on an Exotic Adventure Books take us away, to different places, different times, cultures and people. The external adventure is often just the backdrop to the character's more internal journey of self-discovery. The great thing about books is how we can peer through the eyes of the protagonist, no matter how flawed they might be. Award-winning author Gerald Everett Jones is back to talk about his latest book, “Harry Harmabee's Kenyan Sundowner”, which tells the story of a lonely and misguided widower who travels to East Africa in search of a good time. What he encounters instead is a whole new reason to live. Gerald is a freelance writer based in Santa Monica, California. Have you ever loved a book so much that you wished you could sit and talk with the author? Ask them questions about the plot, about how they came up with their ideas, the backstory, and maybe you wanted to know if after the final page, your favorite character, really did live happily ever after? Gerald Everett Jones discusses this topic with host Desireé Duffy on this episode of the Books That Make You Show. Book festivals and events are amazing opportunities for booklovers to see and meet their favorite authors. They can get autographs and take selfies. It is fun hanging out and listening to them speak on panels. The literary crowd at events like the LA Times Festival of Books, or BookCon in New York, and even the Books That Make You annual literary tea, the Beach Bound Book Bash, are a lot of fun to connect with. Right now, hanging out isn’t as easy as it once was because of social distancing. That doesn’t mean we still can’t be social, though. The LA BookFest is an event created for booklovers from around the world, and it brings together authors and thought leaders, journalists, and publishing pros to interact with the reading and writing community. Gerald Everett Jones is participating on two panels at LA BookFest. Plus, he has an amazing bookish podcast, is an author an editor and more. Gerald Everett Jones is also a member of the Writers Guild of America, the Dramatists Guild, Women’s National Book Association, and Film Independent (FIND), as well as a director of the Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC). Let’s say you’re a writer who wants to publish your work to the web and eventually monetize it. These days you have plenty of options. You might open a Medium account and join the platform’s partner program. Or maybe you launch a Substack newsletter. If you’re really ambitious, you could throw together a Wordpress website and integrate it with a payment tool like Stripe. Or you could just launch an account on Ghost, a publishing platform created a few years ago by a guy named John O’Nolan. Before founding Ghost, John was the deputy head of design at Wordpress, and though he was always a fan of the open source CMS, he thought he could create something a little bit better. So John launched a Kickstarter campaign, and after raising tens of thousands of dollars, he developed Ghost. Today, it’s used by some of the world’s largest brands, and his hope now is that independent writers will use it to monetize their content. I spoke to John about the platform and why he thinks a writer should choose it over a competitor like Substack or Patreon.
Substack is taking several steps to support the writers and publications using its newsletter platform. In June this year, the first ever anthology of Gibraltar poetry was published. It came about following an appeal by the Independent Writers and Artists Project in Gibraltar for any budding poets to submit their poems. After much deliberation by a panel of judges the Anthology of Contemporary Gibraltar Poets was compiled containing 30 poems from 10 different poets. In this episode, one of those judges and poets, Giordano Durante explains the reasons why the anthology was created. If you would like to get a copy of the Anthology of Contemporary Gibraltar Poets, you can pick one up at the Gibraltar Museum shop, the Gibraltar Heritage Trust shop or at the main Eroski supermarket by the airport. It’s hoped that the anthology will eventually be available digitally for a wider audience too.
