There are two campgrounds near downtown San Diego where we love to stay. One is the private luxury resort, Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay, and the other is an inland county campground, Sweetwater Summit Regional Park. These two RV parks are as different as Cape Cod and Big Bend. That's largely due to the chameleonic character of San Diego where the scenery changes about every five miles. One park is on San Diego Bay and the other is inland, at the foot of Mother Miguel Mountain on The Sweetwater River. The Sweetwater Summit Regional Park and Campground is set within nearly 1,000 acres of Sweetwater Valley on permanently preserved open space, surrounded by a metropolitan area. This Campground is a gold nugget for RVers looking for scenic, tranquil, private and clean no-hassle accommodations with easy freeway access to downtown San Diego. Amy B. Loader was one of the survivors of the Martin Handcart Company in 1856. Too weak to wade across the freezing water, she was carried by one of the rescue party members (probably David P. Kimball). She was deeply moved by his heroic act of sacrifice, and told him so. His response, through chattering teeth, was a short burst of profanity that shocked the pious Amy. It was his way of saying, "You're welcome." This episode recounts the Martin Handcart Company's final crossing of the Sweetwater River, November 4, 1856, To learn more about the material in this episode, check out the following resources:Howard A. Hosts Doug Draper (Kansas 1992) and Bill Martin (Mississippi State 1975) welcome brothers to Phi Gamma Delta's new podcast, On the Banks. On the Banks is a six-part podcast series, where we will meet brothers through interview and storytelling. On the Banks pays homage to the chance meeting of John Templeton McCarty (Jefferson 1848) and Bolivar G. Krepps (Jefferson 1849) on the banks of the Sweetwater River on July 7, 1849. Two brothers who never met, connected 1,500 miles west of Canonsburg when heading to the California Gold Rush. No GPS and no cell phone…they found each other. On the Banks will focus on the power of that connection, meeting new brothers for the first time and embracing our shared values.
The Smith Sherlock General Store is operated by the Friends of South Pass, a non-profit organization that supports programs at SPC. Revenue from store sales help us make tours like yours possible. Without those sales, SPC would not be able to provide this programming. South Pass City was born in the summer of 1867. Unlike hundreds of other Western boom towns, this one endures to the present day. A rare blend of hard work, circumstance, & foresight has resulted in one of the best preserved towns & gold mills in the West. Rumors of earlier gold discoveries along the Sweetwater River date to the 1840s, but the promise of greater reward involving less risk had led gold seekers to focus elsewhere. Beginning in the 1860s, scattered handfuls of frontier military personnel were assigned to protect telegraph lines, Pony Express stations, & emigrant trails in the South Pass area. The first sizable gold excitement in the South Pass region took place when a party of men out of Fort Bridger located the Cariso Lode (later called the Carissa) in June 1867. The local region hosted the Shoshonie & the California Mining Districts. The first boom only lasted a couple of seasons, but helped establish mining as the foundation for Wyoming’s economy. The initial gold rush was followed quickly by a prolonged bust as eager miners & investors were rudely acquainted with the realities of profitably working the Sweetwater Mines. Many early boomers instead sought their fortunes through agriculture on the tracts of nearby public land open to homesteading. Others saw opportunity as merchants, professionals, & government workers. Always though, there were those committed to a belief in the future of the mines. Their fidelity was rewarded as cycles of national prosperity & optimism resulted in the periodic revival of dormant mine properties. Local men obtained regular work, support industries like timber cutting & freighting surged, & the anticipation of lasting good times ahead convinced even discouraged old timers to hold on a bit longer. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/support
Feat guest: Jeff “The three endgame couples are like, holding each other while they watch a fiery boat of a flaming body float away. Romantic.” -Maria TBH, this mid-season finale gave us whiplash—from Archie and FP’s team-up to run the Dickinson brothers out of town to Jughead bashing a skull in with a rock as initiation into a creepy secret society to Cheryl’s Red Queen trial of Penelope Blossom and subsequent letting-go of Jason (finally!) via fiery Viking Funeral on Sweetwater River. Meanwhile, in “Hills We Are Willing to Die On” territory, we continue to plead with the writers to let Veronica have non-Hiram-related plotlines, and, as Maria is NOT a fan of this Betty storyline, we plead once again for our dear Betty to go to regular therapy sessions. P.S. Having recorded our live reactions on December 11, we were still in a bit of shock over the Riverdale writers actually trying to get us to buy that Betty Cooper killed the Love of Her Life Jughead Jones (seriously, good one, y’all) so while we throw some ideas around, a more coherent discussion of flash-forward theories will commence on our 4x10 podcast~ As always, check out our bodysuit looks on Insta at bodysuits4bughead or Twitter at B4B_Podcast. RIP Luke Perry, love forever. ————————————————————————————— A message from Rebecca, who is taking a step back from the podcast for the foreseeable future: “I want to start off saying how much fun this experience has been for me and how I want to ultimately figure a way to be able to play a role again in the future. I am in grad school now and my program is just overwhelming me. I'm also just a person so sometimes life gets to me too. I want to be able to be the best podcast co-host to my dear friend Maria, and to those who listen! Right now, I just have to take some time for myself and focus on school. I will be back! Because I need to know who that damn Twiggy-Smalls is and I have too many bodysuits now for my own good! Thanks to Maria! Thanks to RAS! Thanks to Bughead! XOXO Rebecca.”
