“He was some kind of a man. What does it matter what you say about people?” – Touch of Evil (1958)This week, we're crossing into the shadowy borderlands of noir with special guest Ryan Luis Rodriguez to unpack Orson Welles' Touch of Evil. From its legendary opening tracking shot to Welles' haunting turn as the corrupt Hank Quinlan, the film stands as a dark, complex swan song to the classic noir era.Together, we explore the film's bold visual language, its controversial casting choices, and the fascinating story behind the restored cut that finally honored Welles' original vision. Touch of Evil isn't just a masterwork of style—it's a film that continues to challenge how we think about authority, morality, and the boundaries we draw. Episode Notes:Touch of Evil (1958) was directed by Orson Welles and stars Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, and Welles himselfSelected to the National Film Registry in 1993Famous for:A 3+ minute opening tracking shot widely regarded as one of the best in cinemaWelles' portrayal of the morally bankrupt Captain Hank QuinlanA studio-meddled post-production process that was later corrected by a 1998 restoration using Welles' notesDiscussion topics include:The film's place at the end of the classic noir eraInnovations in camera movement, sound design, and lightingHow Touch of Evil navigates race, identity, and law enforcement on the U.S.–Mexico borderThe legacy of the restored version and its impact on Welles' reputationFeaturing special guest:Ryan Luis Rodriguez, film podcaster and host of The Coolness Chronicles and Reels of Justice Follow the Show:TwitterInstagramWebsite Music by Mike Natale

We love Noir more than anything else on this show! They kick the series off right at the end of the traditional Old Hollywood Noir cycle this week, looking at Orson Welles' TOUCH OF EVIL (1958)! A pristine example of sleazy, corrupt, moral filth that fits perfectly into the hardboiled detective Noir style, yet with a typically Welles maverick style that helped to usher in the more on-location, dynamic style of crime movies moving into the 60s! With Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Welles himself towering above all else, and a hugely impactful extended cameo from Marlene Dietrich, this is really one of the best the genre has to offer! In this episode, Sean characteristically fucks up the intro before realizing that Colin fucked up the watching, opting to save time by watching an abridged version of the movie. None of this takes away from both of their love for Orson Welles' Touch of Evil, which owes to its beautiful shots, incredible acting, and interesting clashes of criminal justice philosophies. Not that the Letterboxd Losers can appreciate any of that. And don't worry, all the things you have come to love about Film Flam remain the same: Colin continues to assert dominance over Sean through his better audio setup while Sean proudly records through an old Coors Lite can, Colin keeps dreaming of becoming a cone-shaped bra, and listeners who have not watched the movie still don't receive even passing consideration or respect.

In fact, when Newman finally won the Oscar in 1987 for “The Color of Money,” after being nominated six times previously, he didn't even bother to show up to the ceremony. “It's like chasing a beautiful woman for 80 years,” he told the Associated Press. “Finally, she relents and you say, ‘I'm terribly sorry. A héten lezárjuk a három filmes film noir thriller miniblokkot. Visszatérünk Orson Welleshez, akivel színészként találkoztunk néhány hete, ezútttal nemcsak a megkérdőjelezhető moralitású mellékszereplőt, hanem a rendezőt is üdvözölhetjük benne. A Touch of Evil (A gonosz érintése) a film noir klasszikus korszakának a végén megjelent, rengeteg szempontból formabontó műfaji darab. A főhőst Charlton Heston (Tízparancsolat, Ben-Hur, A majmok bolygója) játssza, a párját Janet Leigh (Psycho). Miért nevezte Pauline Kael "rikító" thrillernek Welles rendezését? Mik azok a rendezői fogások és filmkészítési technikák, amelyekkel Orson Welles saját territóriumot kolonizált magának a hollywoodi gyártás mezsgyéjén? Milyen szempontokból tekinthető határátszegő, tabufeszegető történetnek A gonosz érintése? Az Orson Welles által játszott Quinlan nyomozó hatásáról is beszélünk a mai kor antihőseire és rossz zsaruira.  Ha tetszett az adásunk, támogass bennünket a Vakfolt Extrával! Csatlakozz a Facebook-csoportunkhoz is! We discuss Orson Welles' return to Hollywood and the familiar story of a troubled post-production. We also discuss the various cuts and the various stories about the film's production. Dana and Tom discuss the crime noir thriller, Touch of Evil (1958): written and directed by Orson Welles, music by Henry Mancini, starring Charleton Heston, Orson Welles, Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, and Zsa Zsa Gabor.Plot Summary: In "Touch of Evil," director Orson Welles crafts a gripping, noir-infused masterpiece that immerses the audience in a world of corruption, betrayal, and moral ambiguity. Set in a seedy border town on the U.S.-Mexico border, a car bomb explosion on the American side of the border sets off a chain of events that exposes the underbelly of law enforcement and political power. At the center of the narrative is the enigmatic and morally compromised police captain Hank Quinlan, played with remarkable depth by Orson Welles himself. Quinlan is a brilliant detective known for his unorthodox methods, but his obsession with bringing criminals to justice has led him down a dark path of manipulation and deceit. He's a character who personifies the blurred lines between good and evil, justice and corruption. Opposing Quinlan is the charismatic and determined Mexican narcotics officer, Mike Vargas, portrayed by the charismatic Charlton Heston. Vargas is determined to solve the bombing case, and is willing to confront the pervasive corruption that infects both sides of the border. As the investigation unfolds, "Touch of Evil" delves into themes of racial tension, prejudice, and the abuse of power, all set against a backdrop of gritty urban decay. The film's supporting cast, including Janet Leigh as Vargas's wife, Susan, and Marlene Dietrich as a mysterious fortune-telling gypsy, adds depth to the story and further complicates the moral landscape."Touch of Evil" is a cinematic tour de force that continues to be celebrated for its complexity, social commentary, and innovative filmmaking techniques. It's a film that leaves a lasting impression by challenging viewers to question their own notions of justice and morality in a world where darkness lurks just beneath the surface. Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil" is a timeless classic that remains a must-see for cinephiles and lovers of thought-provoking cinema. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/touch-of-evil-1958For the entire rankings list so far, go to:Full Graded List - Greatest Movies of All-Time Ronny Duncan Studios

What can we learn by analysing how ‘oners' are written on the page? Chas, Stu and Mel reunite to talk about writing the *feel* of camerawork in screenplays. We use “oners” — a long-playing continuous take — as a lens to talk about how some writers have “directed” from the page. We talk immediacy, camera positions, handovers, and anchoring action and more. We breakdown the famous Copacabana shot from GOODFELLAS, the awe-inspiring chase sequence from THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN, and the heart pounding ‘Zed attack' from CHILDREN OF MEN. We also briefly discuss THE BOURNE IDENTITY, HEREDITARY, THE BEAR, ALL THE PRESIDENTS MEN and TOUCH OF EVIL. And we do this breakdown by closely reading the actual words on the page. The world of cinema has seen many innovations in its short history, from the birth of sound to the rise of CGI. But behind every great film is a story of the creative process, and the struggles filmmakers face to bring their vision to the screen. In this podcast, we explore a few different aspects of filmmaking and film history, from the innovations of director Orson Welles to the impact of the Hayes Code on the industry. Join us as Mike and Diego return to also take a closer look at the importance of the director's cut and whether classic films like Touch of Evil can still be enjoyed in contemporary times.----------The Touch of Evil is a classic film noir that tells the story of a corrupt cop, Hank Quinlan, who plants evidence to frame innocent suspects. The movie is directed by Orson Welles, who also stars as Quinlan, and is known for its stunning opening shot, which is a three-minute long tracking shot that sets up the premise of the movie. The film has a lot of themes and subplots that explore power, corruption, and justice. The conversation on The Cinedicate centers around the movie's cinematography, genre, and storytelling. Mike, an avid cinephile, explains how he got into film noir and was interested in finding a unique take on the genre. He was fascinated with how film noir built its own ecosystem and found films like The Touch of Evil and The Third Man innovative in their approach to the genre.Diego, the genre lover, had never seen an Orson Welles movie before and was impressed with how well Welles portrayed a corrupt cop. The conversation goes on to discuss the movie's other themes and characters, including its portrayal of minorities and female characters. The podcast hosts encourage listeners to watch the movie, dive into its themes, and appreciate the storytelling techniques employed by Welles.Overall, The Touch of Evil is a classic film that has influenced many other directors and movies and is still relevant today in its exploration of power and corruption. The podcast conversation does a great job of highlighting the movie's strengths and encourages listeners to watch it and appreciate its innovations.----------Support The Cinedicate on PatreonConnect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cinedicate/Twitter: https://twitter.com/cinedicate/Discord: https://www.cinedicate.com/discord Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Bob, Cory, Philena and Greg are back for the first time this season! Yes. This is only S2 episode with all the OMFYS co-hosts. Greg hasn't been here since our season premiere, but Cory wasn't around for that one, and the Psychedelic Kaiju ep had no Franklins whatsoever. We did get a little chatty with the joyous reunion and all, and our movies this time gave us a lot of psychological baggage to unpack, so this ep is, um, expansive. However, Cory tells Bob that "people really like long podcasts," so have at enjoy the 88 minute binge. This week we explore criminal justice and murder with two f--d up movies from directors we should have covered a lot sooner. First, we have Orson Welles pulling off the mother of all crane shots in TOUCH OF EVIL, his ACAB masterpiece from 1958--a film so brilliant that even Charlton Heston in brown face can't ruin it. Welles is Hank Quinlin, a grotesque American cop in a sleazy border town who never found a piece of evidence he didn't manufacture. Heston is Vargas, an upstanding Mexican official who clashes with Quinlin when an American businessman is blown to bits by a car bomb that was planted on the Mexican side of the border. The movie is a technical marvel with a banger of a Latin jazz meets rock and roll score by Henry Mancini. And the cast is pretty amazing too, with Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, Joseph Cotten, Akim Tamiroff, Joseph Calleia, and the Queen of Outer Space herself, Zsa Zsa Gabor. Cory gives it the stony seal of approval. Next, we come dangerously close to the 21st Century with David Lynch's LOST HIGHWAY (1997). At the time Lynch and Barry Gifford wrote this film, they were both obsessed with the OJ Simpson murder trial and how dissociative fugue allowed The Juice to maintain his breezy demeanor despite his horrible crimes. Lynch takes his exploration of murder, guilt and fugue states to an appropriately absurd level here as Bill Pullman plays a jazz saxophonist who murders his wife, goes to jail, and wakes up as an auto mechanic played by Balthazar Getty. Making things even creepier is the casting of Robert Blake as the movie's "Mystery Man," a few years before he was the defendant in a sensational murder trial of his own. Also starring Patricia Arquette and Robert Loggia in dual roles plus Natasha Gregson Wagner (Natalie Wood's daughter), Gary Busey, Richard Pryor (his last film role), and Marilyn Manson as a porn actor to make things even more problematic. The plot of this week's episode is either about: 1) A grown man who buys action figures and loves Marvel movies screams at his co-host like a man-baby because he made him watch a movie from Orson Welles like an adult instead of consuming another terrible Disney+ show OR 2) A grown man chooses an Orson Wells movie for the podcast to look smart, but the movie he picks is a disastrous mess that features Charlton Heston in full Mexican-face--a fact that he is willing to overlook because the movie is in black-and-white and is about hating the police. Which is the reality? YOU DECIDE

Book Vs. Movie: Touch of Evil The 1956 novel Badge of Evil Vs. the 1958 Film Noir ClassicThe Margos dive right back into one of our favorite genres--film noir! The 1958 Orson Welles's directed film Touch of Evil is based on a 1956 novel by Whit Masteron titled Badge of Evil. The book sold reasonably well at the time, but at the time, the movie was given mixed reviews due to Welles not staying until the final edit process. In 1998, a “re-cut” of the film was based on a 58-page memo Welles had sent to the studio 40 years previously is now considered a modern classic and one of the last true “film noirs” to be released. Whit Masterson was the nom de plume of two writers--Wade Miller and Will Daemer who wrote more than 30 books together (including Kitten With a Whip in 1964!) Their original story is about a man, Rudy Linneker, killed by a dynamite blast at this home. His daughter Tara stands to make $2 million and is engaged to someone her father disapproved of before her death. There are other suspects, including Ernest Farnum, a disgruntled employee who improbably confesses. Detectives Leron McCoy and Hank Quinlan are considered “legends” in Los Angeles for their excellent work, and Assistant District Attorney Mitch Holt is suspicious. The rest of the story is a mish-mash of double-crossing police and families in danger, with several lives and careers ruined while exposing hypocrisy and crime in the L.A. police. Orson Welles was given this project as a B Movie and decided to take apart the story and rebrand it as his vision moving the book action from San Diego to the U.S. & Mexico border. Our protagonist (played by Charlton Heston) was renamed Miguel Vargas and played in “brown face” to serve Welles's theme of racism and American relations with Mexico. 34-year-old pre-Psycho Janet Leigh rounds out the cast as Vargas's new bride, Susan Vargas, pre-Duel Dennis Weaver as the Night Manager, and an array of top-notch character actors played by a multi-racial cast.Stars like Zsa Zsa Gabor, Keenan Wynn, and Marlene Dietrich agreed to work for union pay to help keep on budget. This week we get into the classic films of the Noir genre with a film that Lewis and Branden both had yet to see; Touch of Evil (1958). Orson Welles wrote, directed and stars in this gritty tale of murder, grudges and deceit that is truly unforgettable. We talk about representation, police corruption and Quinlan. We talk A-LOT about Quinlan. We hope that you enjoy the show and return in future to the congregation!Show Website: https://film-church-radio.captivate.fm/listenLewis' Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/walkerlewis3007/Past Episodes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/film-church-radio/id1603164927Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/filmchurchradio/
