Wat zijn de belangrijkste oorzaken voor de enorme verschillen in spiergroei tussen sporters?Jurgen legt uit dat genetica de doorslaggevende factor is. De Finse studie waar we het over hebben, laat zien dat sommige mensen simpelweg meer aanleg hebben voor hypertrofie, oftewel het groter worden van de spieren, dan anderen. Het is een soort genetische loterij. Zelfs bij exact hetzelfde trainingsschema zagen de onderzoekers dat de een tien procent aan spiermassa won, terwijl de ander op nul bleef steken. Dat is voor de zwoegende sporter frustrerend, maar het is een fysiologische realiteit waar we niet omheen kunnen.2. Wat heb je aan krachttraining als je een zogeheten non-responder bent op het gebied van spiermassa?Dit is een cruciaal punt dat Jurgen in de uitzending aanstipt om de boel te relativeren. Hoewel de groei van spiermassa heel grillig verloopt, stijgt de pure kracht bij bijna iedereen die traint. Voor ons als duursporters is dat eigenlijk heel goed nieuws. Guido Vroemen vult aan dat we meestal helemaal niet zwaarder willen worden door extra spiermassa. Zolang je sterker wordt en je zenuwstelsel de spieren beter leert aansturen, boek je progressie die je op de fiets of tijdens het lopen echt gaat merken.3. Wat is het effect van een trainingspauze op de opgebouwde winst in de sportschool?Jurgen haalde een onderzoek aan waaruit bleek dat spiermassa na tien weken volledige rust grotendeels verdwijnt, wat natuurlijk pijnlijk is om te horen. Maar er is een belangrijke nuance: de pure kracht bleef bij de proefpersonen veel beter behouden dan de omvang van de spieren. Het fundament dat je hebt gelegd, stort dus niet zomaar in. Zodra je na een vakantie of blessure de draad weer oppakt, merk je dat je veel sneller terug bent op je oude niveau dan toen je ooit begon.4. Wat is de rol van het spiergeheugen bij het hervatten van de training na een rustperiode?Het concept van spiergeheugen is geen fabeltje, zo legt Jurgen uit. Tijdens het trainen maak je nieuwe celkernen aan in je spiervezels. Als je stopt met trainen, wordt de spier weliswaar dunner, maar die extra celkernen blijven waarschijnlijk gewoon aanwezig. Ze staan als het ware in de stand-by modus. Zodra je weer met gewichten gaat smijten, zorgen deze kernen ervoor dat de eiwitproductie direct weer op gang komt. Je lichaam onthoudt dus het werk dat je eerder hebt verzet.5. Wat raadt Guido Vroemen aan voor duursporters die specifiek willen trainen zonder zwaarder te worden?Guido is daar heel nuchter in: train voor de functie, niet voor de spiegel. Hij ziet in zijn praktijk dat sporters vaak algemene schema's volgen die gericht zijn op uiterlijk. Voor een triatleet of wielrenner is specifieke kracht echter veel belangrijker dan een dikke biceps. Guido noemt het voorbeeld van Jetze Plat, die enorm krachtig is maar niet onnodig zwaar. Het valt ons op dat de tijden van Kjeld Nuis en Miho Takagi ondanks alle technologische innovaties al jarenlang onaangetast blijven. Volgens Jurgen en Guido komt dit doordat wereldrecords vaak een zeldzame samenkomst zijn van perfecte omstandigheden, zoals de lage luchtdruk in Salt Lake City. In de weerbarstige praktijk van een laaglandbaan zoals in Milaan verschuift de nadruk van pure topsnelheid naar efficiëntie en pacing. Het fysiologische plafond is misschien nog niet bereikt, maar de perfecte storm van 2019 is simpelweg niet meer voorbijgekomen op het ijs.3. Wat leert de legendarische race van Mark Tuitert uit 2010 ons over moderne pacing? Guido Vroemen benadrukt dat de gouden race van Mark Tuitert nog altijd het ultieme schoolvoorbeeld is van slimme zelfregulatie op het ijs. Tuitert won destijds niet door de snelste opening te rijden, maar door zijn verval in de beslissende laatste ronde tot een minimum te beperken. Veel sporters laten zich in de praktijk nog steeds leiden door adrenaline en angst, waardoor ze te hard starten en in de laatste bocht volledig stilvallen. De les van Tuitert is dat je moet durven ontspannen in de eerste duizend meter om aan het eind nog techniek over te hebben.4. Wat is de rol van zelfregulatie en RPE tijdens de schaatsmijl? Jurgen legt uit dat een schaatser op de 1500 meter constant zijn gevoel van inspanning, ook wel de Rate of Perceived Exertion genoemd, moet managen. Het is een mentale balanceeract tussen de drang om te versnellen en de wetenschap dat elke extra versnelling je later in de race fataal kan worden. Het gaat erom dat een atleet leert luisteren naar de signalen van het lichaam, zoals de opbouw van lactaat, zonder in paniek te raken. Topatleten gebruiken deze zelfregulatie om precies op de kritieke grens te balanceren tot ze de eindstreep passeren.5. Wat kunnen schaatsers leren van de startprocedures bij het alpineskiën? Tijdens de Spelen in Milaan zagen we veel discussie over de startregels bij het skiën, waarbij een startmoment soms willekeurig kan aanvoelen. Hoe verhouden blessurecijfers zich tot andere sporten en is de focus op blessurepreventie terecht?Jurgen geeft aan dat Olympische sporten als snowboarden, freestyle skiën en slope style een incidentie van rond de 30 procent hebben. Hij waarschuwt dat dat niet betekent dat blessures onvermijdelijk zijn, maar dat ze de risico's van extreme sporten onderstrepen. Gerrit benadrukt dat in veel sporten de verwachting is dat blessures voorkomen, maar dat het niet altijd makkelijk is ze volledig te voorkomen zonder stop te zetten of de sport anders in te richten. One of the hottest events in San Francisco over the past couple of months was a lecture series by tech billionaire Peter Thiel – in which he preached about those he thinks are “legionnaires of the Antichrist.” Thiel has shared his Christian viewpoints publicly and is a longtime supporter of conservative politicians. But in these talks, he asserts that those who are pro-regulation are also against God. The lectures were off the record, but Gerrit De Vynck and other reporters at The Post obtained leaked recordings of them.
