Welcome to episode 120 of The Journey Is the Reward!Prepare for the continuing high-flying stories and adventures across Southern Africa.The episode begins with Ground Control Howie taxiing the group to the Cape Town International (CPT) for the next leg of their journey, a flight to Victoria Falls. Immediately, they encountered turbulence with Brian's Priority Pass access, resulting in a temporary grounding. However, quick thinking from either Gerrit or Jim bypassed the holding pattern. They successfully executed a rescue mission, allowing Brian to join the crew in the lounge closer to the departure gate, ensuring smooth sailing into their next flight.With ground operations complete, the crew boarded their scheduled service flight with ProFlight Zambia on a CRJ-500, as they headed toward the mighty mist of Victoria Falls. They landed safely at the Victoria Falls (VFA) aerodrome where they logged three days at the Avani hotel and enjoyed the spectacular Victoria Falls and surrounding areas.  The group also explored the town of Livingstone with a very pregnant Connie was acting as their friendly tour guide. During this layover, Malin, Gerrit and Brian also completed a cross-border transit—a quick international hop—gaining another Passport Stamp as they walked across the Victoria Falls Bridge to enter Zimbabwe. Following the successful layover, the crew transitioned smoothly into Botswana. Here they engaged in specialized safaris conducted by both land and rivercraft. Treating themselves to First Class Amenities, they enjoyed therapeutic massages by CasLea Beauty Spa. Brian, ever the charismatic traveler, found a lifelong friend in his favorite masseuse, Cassandra! The show closes with an announcement: a special recording with the whole flight crew was captured inside the airport lounge. Maar is het meer dan een hardnekkige mythe?In de aflevering van deze week onderzoeken Gerrit en Jurgen wat de wetenschap zegt over de relatie tussen sport en huidveroudering. Ze ontdekken waarom zon, uitdroging en voeding meer invloed hebben dan de kilometers zelf, en horen van sportarts Guido Vroemen hoe topsporters omgaan met zonnebescherming tijdens lange trainingen en wedstrijden.Een frisse blik op de wetenschap achter een gezond lichaam en een sterke, weerbare huid.Vragen die in deze aflevering worden beantwoord: 1. Wordt je huid echt sneller oud als je veel sport?Nee. Er is geen wetenschappelijk bewijs dat hardlopen of fietsen je huid sneller laat verouderen. Wat wél invloed heeft, is zonblootstelling, uitdroging en een laag vetpercentage. Sporters met weinig vet in het gezicht kunnen er wat ingevallen uitzien, maar dat is geen teken van schade. Beweging stimuleert juist de doorbloeding en vertraagt het natuurlijke verouderingsproces.2. Waarom hebben fanatieke buitensporters vaker last van huidproblemen?Omdat ze simpelweg veel buiten zijn. De combinatie van zon, wind, zweet en kou tast de beschermlaag van de huid aan. Zonder zonnebrand kan UV-straling het collageen in de huid beschadigen, waardoor die minder elastisch wordt. Jurgen noemt dat de belangrijkste factor achter het idee van een Runner's face. Wie zich goed insmeert en hydrateert, vermindert dat risico aanzienlijk.3. Hoe belangrijk is zonnebrand tijdens het sporten echt?Volgens Guido Vroemen net zo belangrijk als drinken of eten. Zonverbranding kost het lichaam energie, verstoort de vochtbalans en kan prestaties beïnvloeden. Een zonnebrandcrème met factor 30 of 50, ruim vóór het sporten aangebracht, is essentieel. Smeren bij bewolking is ook zinvol, want UV-straling gaat dwars door wolken heen. Regelmaat is belangrijker dan dikte: beter vaak een dunne laag dan af en toe te veel.4. Wat kan ik doen om huidveroudering door sport te voorkomen?Bescherming begint met gezonde gewoontes. Hydrateer goed, eet gevarieerd en gebruik producten met antioxidanten zoals vitamine C en E. Draag bij felle zon een pet of shirt met mouwen. Beperk trainen midden op de dag, en geef je huid na inspanning tijd om te herstellen. Guido benadrukt: huidverzorging is geen luxe, maar onderdeel van slim presteren.5. Helpt het om extra te smeren na het sporten?Ja, dat helpt vooral bij herstel. Na het douchen kun je een lichte, hydraterende crème gebruiken om vocht en vet terug te brengen in de huid. Dat voorkomt irritatie en houdt de huid soepel. Bij verbranding kan een gel met aloë vera of menthol verlichting geven. Het doel is niet om de schade te verbergen, maar om het herstel te ondersteunen.6. Kunnen gezichtsoefeningen echt helpen tegen rimpels?Het bewijs is nog dun, maar er zijn interessante signalen. In een studie leek de huid na twintig weken lichte gezichtsoefeningen iets strakker. Jurgen ziet het vooral als een leuke aanvulling: beweging in het gezicht kan de doorbloeding verbeteren. Verwacht geen wonderen, maar net als bij sport geldt: consistentie werkt. In de aflevering van deze week praten Gerrit en Jurgen met arts-onderzoeker Lotte Koopmans, die promoveerde op het effect van verschillende eiwitbronnen bij actieve ouderen.Ze deelt haar bevindingen over melkeiwit, erwteiwit en meelwormeiwit, en wat deze alternatieve eiwitbronnen kunnen betekenen voor spierherstel, voeding en duurzaamheid. Een gesprek over wetenschap, smaak en gewoontes, dat laat zien hoe slim eten bijdraagt aan gezond presteren op elke leeftijd.Vragen die in deze aflevering worden beantwoord: 1. Waarom hebben ouderen eigenlijk meer eiwit nodig dan jongeren?Ouder worden gaat vaak gepaard met een verminderde gevoeligheid van de spieren voor eiwit, ook wel anabole resistentie genoemd. Dat betekent dat het lichaam minder efficiënt reageert op voeding en training. Volgens Lotte Koopmans helpt het om de eiwitinname te verhogen naar ongeveer 1 tot 1,2 gram per kilo lichaamsgewicht per dag. Voldoende eiwit zorgt ervoor dat spieren sterk blijven en dat herstel na inspanning sneller verloopt.2. Wat verstaan we precies onder ‘alternatieve eiwitbronnen'?Daarmee bedoelen onderzoekers alle eiwitten die niet uit traditionele dierlijke producten komen, zoals melk of vlees. Denk aan plantaardige bronnen zoals peulvruchten en erwten, maar ook aan innovatieve varianten zoals insecteneiwit. Lotte benadrukt dat deze alternatieve eiwitbronnen niet per se minderwaardig zijn: ze kunnen vergelijkbare aminozuren bevatten, maar vragen soms een iets hogere inname om hetzelfde effect te bereiken.3. Zijn alternatieve eiwitbronnen geschikt voor sporters?Zeker, zegt Lotte, zolang de totale eiwitinname op orde is en de kwaliteit van de bron goed is. Melkeiwit blijft de referentie, maar een combinatie van dierlijke en plantaardige eiwitten werkt prima. Wie bewust kiest voor duurzaamheid, kan gerust variëren met erwten, soja of zelfs meelwormeiwit. Het belangrijkste is dat het product goed verdragen wordt en geen maag- of darmklachten geeft, iets wat bij nieuwe eiwitvormen soms voorkomt.4. Helpt meer eiwit ook om spierpijn te voorkomen?Niet direct, legt Lotte uit. Spierpijn en spierschade zijn niet hetzelfde. Eiwit helpt bij herstel van weefsel, maar voorkomt de tijdelijke stijfheid die hoort bij training niet volledig. 5. Zijn eiwitsupplementen nuttig, of kun je beter gewoon eten?De meeste mensen halen genoeg eiwit uit gewone voeding. Lotte ziet supplementen vooral als handig hulpmiddel als je te weinig binnenkrijgt via maaltijden. Ouderen geven vaak de voorkeur aan volwaardige voeding boven shakes of poeders. Daarom werkt onderzoek nu aan producten waarin alternatieve eiwitbronnen verwerkt zijn, zoals brood of soep met extra eiwit. Dat is praktischer, smakelijker en beter vol te houden.6. Wat kunnen jongere sporters leren van dit onderzoek bij ouderen?Volgens Lotte laat het onderzoek vooral zien hoe belangrijk consistentie is. Spieren reageren op prikkel en voeding, ongeacht leeftijd. Wie goed traint, gevarieerd eet en voldoende eiwit neemt, blijft sterk en herstelt sneller. Alternatieve eiwitbronnen kunnen daarbij helpen, zeker als je bewust met duurzaamheid bezig bent. In deze aflevering hebben Gerrit en Jurgen het over:Spiergeheugen: hoe kun je slim profiteren van je eerdere trainingsarbeid?INLEIDING:Na een blessure of een drukke periode voelt het vaak alsof je helemaal opnieuw moet beginnen. Maar je spieren denken daar anders over. In de aflevering van deze week onderzoeken Gerrit en Jurgen wat wetenschap en praktijk zeggen over spiergeheugen: het vermogen van je lichaam om eerdere trainingsarbeid te “onthouden”.Samen met sportarts Guido Vroemen ontrafelen ze hoe kracht en vorm sneller terugkomen dan je verwacht, en wat dat betekent voor de manier waarop je na rust weer opbouwt. Een aflevering vol inzichten die je helpen slimmer, rustiger en met meer vertrouwen te trainen.Vragen die in deze aflevering worden beantwoord: 1. Hoe snel verlies je kracht en conditie als je stopt met trainen?Na een week of twee zonder training begint het lichaam merkbaar te veranderen. Je verliest wat uithoudingsvermogen en spierkracht, maar het gaat langzamer dan veel sporters denken. Jurgen legt uit dat spiervezels kleiner worden, maar de celkernen blijven behouden. Daardoor kan de spier bij hervatten sneller herstellen. Volgens Guido zien sporters na een rustperiode vaak binnen twee tot drie weken alweer duidelijke vooruitgang.2. Bestaat spiergeheugen echt of is het een mythe?Spiergeheugen bestaat echt, maar het is geen geheugen zoals in je hoofd. Het zit in de structuur van de spiercellen. Eerdere training laat sporen achter in de vorm van extra celkernen en epigenetische veranderingen. Daardoor reageren spieren sneller als je opnieuw begint te trainen. Guido merkt dat sporters die ooit goed getraind waren, veel sneller terug op niveau komen dan nieuwkomers, zelfs na maanden pauze.3. Hoe lang blijft dat spiergeheugen actief?Dat verschilt per persoon en per trainingsvorm. Studies laten zien dat spiergeheugen maanden tot zelfs jaren kan blijven bestaan. Jurgen vertelt dat de extra celkernen waarschijnlijk levenslang aanwezig blijven, terwijl de epigenetische aanpassingen langzaam vervagen. In de praktijk betekent dat: hoe langer en consistenter je hebt getraind, hoe sterker en duurzamer het geheugen. Guido ziet dat ervaren sporters zelfs na een lange blessureperiode opvallend snel herstellen.4. Geldt spiergeheugen alleen voor krachttraining, of ook voor duursporten?De sterkste bewijzen zijn gevonden bij krachttraining, waar spiercelstructuur en -volume belangrijk zijn. Bij duursport werkt spiergeheugen indirect: je lichaam herinnert zich het bewegingspatroon, de efficiëntie en de mentale prikkels. Daardoor voelt een herstart vaak sneller vertrouwd. Guido benadrukt dat ervaren lopers en fietsers na rust minder last hebben van techniekverlies, maar wel voorzichtig moeten zijn met belasting op pezen en gewrichten.5. Hoe kun je het spiergeheugen slim benutten bij een herstart?Volgens Guido is geduld de sleutel. Begin met lichte belasting en kortere trainingen, zodat je lichaam kan wennen. Spiergeheugen helpt vooral als je de heropbouw geleidelijk doet. Overhaasten heeft geen zin: pezen en banden moeten meekomen. Jurgen vult aan dat variatie helpt om het geheugen te “activeren”; afwisselen tussen kracht, tempo en techniek zorgt voor een snellere terugkeer van vorm. Consistentie is belangrijker dan intensiteit.6. I had a chance to sit down with Product and Technology President Gerrit Kazmaier to talk about his views on how the Workday approach to ERP is going to be different from what we see from other players.01:08 — Kazmaier brings enterprise applications, data, data cloud, hyperscale — all those different backgrounds, expertise, and experiences — to Workday. And now he's taken a very aggressive agenda in these first six or seven months, leading up to this notion of ERP. Workday moved into the ERP space with a lot of new introductions, agents, and more at last week's Rising event.01:48 —And a couple of things that Kazmaier talks about: Kazmaier believes the ERP concept is right — giving business leaders a chance to see what's going on inside their companies from multiple perspectives with fully integrated applications. But he feels that the tools have been outdated, too difficult, too slow, too fragmented.02:08 —So Workday, although for its first 20 years had avoided getting into ERP, now feels that the time is right to give huge value to customers.
