Maar je spieren denken daar anders over. In de aflevering van deze week onderzoeken Gerrit en Jurgen wat wetenschap en praktijk zeggen over spiergeheugen: het vermogen van je lichaam om eerdere trainingsarbeid te “onthouden”.Samen met sportarts Guido Vroemen ontrafelen ze hoe kracht en vorm sneller terugkomen dan je verwacht, en wat dat betekent voor de manier waarop je na rust weer opbouwt. Een aflevering vol inzichten die je helpen slimmer, rustiger en met meer vertrouwen te trainen.Vragen die in deze aflevering worden beantwoord: 1. Hoe snel verlies je kracht en conditie als je stopt met trainen?Na een week of twee zonder training begint het lichaam merkbaar te veranderen. Je verliest wat uithoudingsvermogen en spierkracht, maar het gaat langzamer dan veel sporters denken. Jurgen legt uit dat spiervezels kleiner worden, maar de celkernen blijven behouden. Daardoor kan de spier bij hervatten sneller herstellen. Volgens Guido zien sporters na een rustperiode vaak binnen twee tot drie weken alweer duidelijke vooruitgang.2. Bestaat spiergeheugen echt of is het een mythe?Spiergeheugen bestaat echt, maar het is geen geheugen zoals in je hoofd. Het zit in de structuur van de spiercellen. Eerdere training laat sporen achter in de vorm van extra celkernen en epigenetische veranderingen. Daardoor reageren spieren sneller als je opnieuw begint te trainen. Guido merkt dat sporters die ooit goed getraind waren, veel sneller terug op niveau komen dan nieuwkomers, zelfs na maanden pauze.3. Hoe lang blijft dat spiergeheugen actief?Dat verschilt per persoon en per trainingsvorm. Studies laten zien dat spiergeheugen maanden tot zelfs jaren kan blijven bestaan. Jurgen vertelt dat de extra celkernen waarschijnlijk levenslang aanwezig blijven, terwijl de epigenetische aanpassingen langzaam vervagen. In de praktijk betekent dat: hoe langer en consistenter je hebt getraind, hoe sterker en duurzamer het geheugen. Guido ziet dat ervaren sporters zelfs na een lange blessureperiode opvallend snel herstellen.4. Geldt spiergeheugen alleen voor krachttraining, of ook voor duursporten?De sterkste bewijzen zijn gevonden bij krachttraining, waar spiercelstructuur en -volume belangrijk zijn. Bij duursport werkt spiergeheugen indirect: je lichaam herinnert zich het bewegingspatroon, de efficiëntie en de mentale prikkels. Daardoor voelt een herstart vaak sneller vertrouwd. Guido benadrukt dat ervaren lopers en fietsers na rust minder last hebben van techniekverlies, maar wel voorzichtig moeten zijn met belasting op pezen en gewrichten.5. Hoe kun je het spiergeheugen slim benutten bij een herstart?Volgens Guido is geduld de sleutel. Begin met lichte belasting en kortere trainingen, zodat je lichaam kan wennen. Spiergeheugen helpt vooral als je de heropbouw geleidelijk doet. Overhaasten heeft geen zin: pezen en banden moeten meekomen. Jurgen vult aan dat variatie helpt om het geheugen te “activeren”; afwisselen tussen kracht, tempo en techniek zorgt voor een snellere terugkeer van vorm. Consistentie is belangrijker dan intensiteit.6. Wat betekent spiergeheugen voor sporters die even rust moeten nemen?Voor wie door vakantie, werk of een blessure minder traint, is het geruststellend om te weten dat spiergeheugen sporters helpt sneller te herstellen. Guido adviseert om rustperiodes niet te zien als verlies, maar als onderdeel van een langere cyclus.

In de aflevering van deze week onderzoeken Gerrit en Jurgen wat wetenschap en praktijk zeggen over vloeken en sportprestatie, en de kracht van taal in sport.We praten met taboestrijder Filip de Groeve over waarom een vloekwoord zoveel impact heeft op je lichaam, en met sportarts Guido Vroemen over hoe woorden pijn, motivatie en prestatie beïnvloeden.Het resultaat is een verrassend kijkje in de psychologie van pijn, emotie en zelfspraak, met praktische inzichten voor iedereen die zichzelf weleens tot het uiterste pusht.Vragen die in deze aflevering worden beantwoord: 1. Helpt vloeken echt om beter te presteren tijdens het sporten?Uit verschillende onderzoeken blijkt dat vloeken tijdelijk kan helpen om beter te presteren, vooral bij korte, krachtige inspanningen. Het verhoogt de hartslag, onderdrukt pijn en activeert het zenuwstelsel, waardoor je net iets dieper in je reserves kunt tasten. Het effect is vooral merkbaar bij sprinten, gewichtheffen of korte tests. Bij duursport is het verschil minimaal. Vloeken is dus geen wondermiddel, maar kan als emotionele ontlading wel bijdragen aan een betere sportprestatie.2. Waarom werkt een vloekwoord beter dan een verzonnen krachtterm?Volgens taboestrijder Filip de Groeve zit de kracht van een vloek in de emotionele lading. Omdat taboewoorden vaak verboden waren in onze jeugd, zijn ze diep in ons brein verankerd. Ze roepen daardoor een fysieke reactie op die verzonnen woorden niet teweegbrengen. Een echt vloekwoord triggert emoties, spanning en adrenaline, terwijl een ‘nepwoord' dat niet doet. Het effect van vloeken op sportprestatie is dus niet rationeel, maar biologisch en emotioneel.3. Kun je vloeken bewust inzetten als strategie tijdens inspanning?Niet echt, zeggen Gerrit en Jurgen. De kracht van vloeken zit juist in de spontaniteit. Wie probeert te vloeken omdat het “zou moeten helpen”, mist de oprechte emotie die het effect veroorzaakt. Bovendien treedt gewenning op als je het te vaak doet. De beste resultaten zie je bij sporters die uit pure frustratie of pijn een vloek laten ontsnappen. Zodra het een trucje wordt, is het effect verdwenen.4. Zijn er alternatieven voor sporters die niet willen vloeken?Absoluut. Muziek met een stevige beat of zelfs expliciete teksten kan een vergelijkbare reactie oproepen. Het verhoogt de motivatie en maakt pijn draaglijker. Ook positieve self-talk en aanmoediging van teamgenoten werken goed. Uit recent onderzoek blijkt dat sporters die verbaal werden aangemoedigd tijdens een test beter presteerden dan sporters die in stilte moesten doorgaan. Uiteindelijk draait het om taal, emotie en ritme: woorden hebben kracht, ook zonder vloeken.5. Wat vindt Guido Vroemen van vloeken in de sportpraktijk?Guido ziet regelmatig dat sporters vloeken tijdens zware inspanningstesten. Hij begrijpt dat mechanisme: een krachtterm kan helpen om pijn of frustratie los te laten. Zolang het niet respectloos is, ziet hij het als een natuurlijke reactie. Guido benadrukt wel dat het niet om het woord zelf gaat, maar om de emotie erachter. Wie die energie positief weet te gebruiken, haalt er het meeste voordeel uit.6. Wat is de belangrijkste les uit deze aflevering?Vloeken kan tijdelijk helpen om door pijn en vermoeidheid heen te breken, maar het is geen structurele prestatieverbeteraar. De sleutel ligt in hoe taal en emotie samenwerken. Of je nu vloekt, zingt...

Wat doet vitamine C eigenlijk in je lichaam?Vitamine C speelt een sleutelrol in verschillende processen. Het ondersteunt de vorming van bindweefsel en collageen, helpt bij de opname van ijzer en is betrokken bij de aanmaak van adrenaline. Daarnaast werkt het als antioxidant en beschermt het cellen tegen oxidatieve stress die bij inspanning vrijkomt. Jurgen legt uit dat deze antioxidatieve werking belangrijk is, maar dat een te hoge inname juist het natuurlijke aanpassingsproces van spieren kan verstoren.2. Is het zinvol om als sporter extra vitamine C te slikken?Volgens Guido Vroemen is dat zelden nodig voor wie gezond en gevarieerd eet. “Een sporter die goed eet, krijgt meestal genoeg binnen,” zegt hij. Alleen in de winter of tijdens intensieve trainingsperiodes kan een lage dosis tijdelijk nuttig zijn om de weerstand te ondersteunen. Guido benadrukt dat langdurig of hoogdoseren niet verstandig is. “Een beetje bijslikken is prima, maar structureel veel slikken heeft geen meerwaarde.”3. Helpt vitamine C echt tegen verkoudheid?De meeste mensen merken weinig verschil, blijkt uit wetenschappelijke analyses. Toch lijkt het voor sporters anders te liggen. Bij marathonlopers, skiërs en soldaten die onder koude omstandigheden trainden, werd een kleiner risico op verkoudheid gevonden bij extra inname van vitamine C. Guido herkent dat beeld: “Wie zwaar traint in de winter, kan met een bescheiden dosis iets extra's doen voor de weerstand.” Maar hij benadrukt dat voldoende rust, slaap en herstel nog belangrijker zijn.4. Kan te veel vitamine C kwaad?Het lichaam scheidt overschotten grotendeels uit via de urine, maar dat betekent niet dat ongelimiteerd slikken zonder risico is. “Hoge doseringen kunnen darmklachten veroorzaken,” zegt Jurgen. “Er wordt ook wel een verband gelegd met nierstenen, maar dat is nog niet overtuigend bewezen.” De dagelijkse aanbevolen hoeveelheid ligt rond de 75 milligram. Wie voldoende fruit en groente eet, komt daar moeiteloos aan zonder supplementen nodig te hebben.5. Heeft extra vitamine C invloed op sportprestaties?Onderzoek laat zien dat langdurig gebruik van hoge doseringen de vitamine C sportprestaties juist negatief kan beïnvloeden. De spieren passen zich dan minder goed aan training aan. Jurgen verklaart dat door het wegvallen van de natuurlijke oxidatieve prikkel die nodig is voor spierherstel. Guido vult aan: “Wie slim traint, goed eet en voldoende rust neemt, haalt meer uit zijn trainingen dan iemand die zijn vertrouwen in supplementen legt.”6. Gerrit Ritscher ist 29 Jahre alt, Vater, Verlobter, Berufsfeuerwehrmann, Notfallsanitäter und Buchautor – ein Mann, der sein Leben komplett auf den Kopf gestellt hat. Denn Gerrit war nicht immer dieser disziplinierte, fokussierte Typ, den man heute kennt. Seine Jugend beschreibt er selbst als „planlos“ – ohne Ziel, ohne Richtung, ohne Sinn. Schule, Alltag, alles fühlte sich leer an. Der Wendepunkt kam zufällig: ein Schulreferat über Zukunftspläne. Dabei erinnerte er sich an seinen Kindheitstraum – Feuerwehrmann zu werden. In diesem Moment änderte sich alles. Von da an begann Gerrit, sein Leben konsequent umzukrempeln. Er kündigte seine Dachdeckerlehre, holte den Schulabschluss nach und trainierte fast täglich. Aus 115 Kilo Körpergewicht wurde ein fitter, fokussierter junger Mann, der wusste, wofür er jeden Tag aufsteht. Er stellte seine Ernährung um, entwickelte eiserne Disziplin und visualisierte sein Ziel jeden Tag: Berufsfeuerwehrmann werden. Rückendeckung bekam er von seiner Familie und einem engen Freund, der bereits bei der Feuerwehr war – doch der wichtigste Antrieb war seine eigene innere Überzeugung. Dann der Schock: Beim ersten Versuch im Auswahlverfahren fiel er durch – wegen eines Kommafehlers. Eine Kleinigkeit, aber sie warf ihn komplett aus der Bahn. Der Traum schien geplatzt. Trotzdem gab er nicht auf. Am letzten Tag der Bewerbungsfrist, buchstäblich zehn Minuten vor Schluss, reichte er erneut seine Unterlagen ein – mit neuer Haltung, weniger Druck, mehr Gelassenheit. Beim zweiten Versuch bestand er alles: den Theorietest, den Sporttest, das Vorstellungsgespräch und die ärztliche Untersuchung. Kurz vor Weihnachten kam der Anruf: Er hatte es geschafft. Gerrit war aufgenommen – sein Traum wurde Realität.

Der 7. Oktober sei ein „Leuchtfeuer der revolutionären Hoffnung“ gewesen. So stand es in einem Demo-Aufruf – ausgerechnet für den 7. Oktober in Berlin. Die Gruppen, die ihn verbreitet haben, waren linke, studentische und vor allem postkoloniale Akteure. Wie kann es sein, dass zwei Jahre nach dem größten Massaker an Juden seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs ausgerechnet linke Gruppen die Täter dieses Massakers explizit feiern? De storm zorgde bovendien voor schuin lopen op de dijken en zand dat continu tegen het lichaam sloeg. Elke kilometer vroeg concentratie en energie om overeind te blijven.3. Welke invloed had de storm op de spieren en coördinatie?De wind en het mulle zand zorgden voor een voortdurende aanslag op spieren en evenwicht. Door de kuilen, golven en schuine hellingen moesten lopers voortdurend corrigeren. Dat betekende extra spanning op enkels, kuiten en romp, terwijl het tempo lager bleef. Vooral op het strand bleek de coördinatie een grotere uitdaging dan het uithoudingsvermogen.4. Wat leer je van zo'n extreme editie van de Kustmarathon?De grootste les is dat slim presteren niet alleen gaat over snelheid, maar over doseren en aanpassen. In zulke omstandigheden bepaalt de omgeving het tempo. Wie te hard start, betaalt de prijs in het tweede deel. Lopers die hun energie goed verdeelden en mentaal flexibel bleven, kwamen beter door de storm. De marathon winnen begint met luisteren naar de omstandigheden.5. Welke rol speelde samenwerking tijdens deze editie?De samenwerking tussen Team ZLM en de Slimmer Presteren-lopers liet zien hoe belangrijk teamgevoel is in extreme omstandigheden. Vrijwilligers en supporters langs het parcours gaven mentale steun op momenten dat de wind het zwaarst was. Samen afzien hielp om vol te houden waar het individueel bijna onmogelijk leek.6. Wat is de belangrijkste tip voor wie de Kustmarathon 2025 als inspiratie ziet?Respecteer het parcours. Train niet alleen op afstand, maar ook op kracht, balans en variabele ondergrond. Bereid je voor op wisselende weersomstandigheden en leer doseren vanaf de eerste kilometer. Welke toepassingen van slimme sportkleding zijn er nu al?Voorbeelden zijn sport-bh's met hartslagmeting, compressiekleding met sensoren voor spieractiviteit, sleeves voor looppatroon en zelfs kleding die zweet analyseert. Er wordt ook geëxperimenteerd met koelmaterialen, zoals petten met smeltende zouten bij de Olympische Spelen van Tokio. Veel producten zijn nog prototypes, maar de mogelijkheden groeien snel. Belangrijk blijft: niet alles wat slim klinkt, heeft ook bewezen effect.4. Wat kan slimme sportkleding concreet bijdragen aan prestaties?Sommige toepassingen leveren harde data, zoals hartslag of bewegingsanalyse, die je training direct verbeteren. Andere spelen meer met beleving. Een koelband kan je frisser laten voelen, ook als de kerntemperatuur niet verandert. Placebo en perceptie kunnen prestaties daadwerkelijk beïnvloeden, al moet je kritisch zijn: hoeveel geld wil je investeren in een effect dat vooral tussen de oren zit?5. Welke uitdagingen zijn er nog voordat slimme kleding doorbreekt?De grootste obstakels zijn praktisch. Elektronica moet tegen wassen en slijtage kunnen, zonder dat kleding zwaar of ongemakkelijk wordt. Ook het geven van intuïtieve feedback via trillingen of signalen staat nog in de kinderschoenen. Daarnaast is de commerciële haalbaarheid lastig: zolang consumenten twijfelen aan nut en betrouwbaarheid, blijft opschalen moeilijk. Hein verwacht dat geleidende inkten en flexibelere elektronica hier in de toekomst verandering in brengen.6. Hoe kan een sporter slim omgaan met deze ontwikkelingen?Wees nieuwsgierig, maar ook kritisch. Vraag je af wat een kledingstuk precies meet, hoe betrouwbaar dat is en of jij er als sporter echt voordeel uit haalt. Voor sommige innovaties geldt dat ze vooral leuk zijn om te proberen, maar pas zinvol worden als ze aansluiten bij je doelen. Zie slimme sportkleding niet als wondermiddel, maar als mogelijke aanvulling op je bestaande trainingsaanpak.Handige...

In today's Cloud Wars Minute, I explore Workday's bold entry into the ERP space and share insights from my interview with Gerrit Kazmaier on how AI and data are reshaping enterprise software.Highlights00:24 — Last week, 30,000 people were at Workday's big Rising event in San Francisco. I had a chance to sit down with Product and Technology President Gerrit Kazmaier to talk about his views on how the Workday approach to ERP is going to be different from what we see from other players.01:08 — Kazmaier brings enterprise applications, data, data cloud, hyperscale — all those different backgrounds, expertise, and experiences — to Workday. And now he's taken a very aggressive agenda in these first six or seven months, leading up to this notion of ERP. Workday moved into the ERP space with a lot of new introductions, agents, and more at last week's Rising event.01:48 —And a couple of things that Kazmaier talks about: Kazmaier believes the ERP concept is right — giving business leaders a chance to see what's going on inside their companies from multiple perspectives with fully integrated applications. But he feels that the tools have been outdated, too difficult, too slow, too fragmented.02:08 —So Workday, although for its first 20 years had avoided getting into ERP, now feels that the time is right to give huge value to customers.
