Fitfluencers noemen het zone 2 en ook topsporters hebben er stapels van in hun schema.Maar hoeveel zin heeft die rustige duurtraining echt?Word je er daadwerkelijk beter van, of voelt het vooral alsof je goed bezig bent?In de aflevering van deze week zoeken Gerrit, Jurgen en Guido Vroemen het uit. Waarom zweren topsporters erbij, maar kunnen recreanten er juist niet blind op vertrouwen?Vragen die in deze aflevering worden beantwoord: 1. Wat is het nut van een lange duurtraining voor sporters?Volgens Guido Vroemen vormt de lange duurtraining de basis voor volume zonder dat je lichaam voortdurend overbelast raakt. Het helpt je aerobe capaciteit opbouwen, bevordert herstel en draagt bij aan je uithoudingsvermogen. Voor topsporters die twintig tot dertig uur per week trainen is dit onmisbaar. Voor recreanten is het waardevol, maar vooral als aanvulling op intensieve blokken, niet als hoofdmoot.2. Waarom trainen topsporters pyramidaal in plaats van gepolariseerd?Onderzoek laat zien dat elites het grootste deel van hun trainingen rustig doen, een kleiner deel rond de drempel en een klein percentage hoogintensief. Omdat ze zo veel uren maken, is dat kleine percentage intensief alsnog een flinke hoeveelheid. Een Spaanse studie van 120.000 marathonlopers bevestigt dit beeld: de snelste lopers besteden veel tijd aan rustige duurtraining, maar combineren dit altijd met intensieve sessies.3. Wat zegt de hype rond zone 2 training over sportprestaties?Coach Iñigo San Millán maakte zone 2 populair door zijn werk met Tadej Pogačar. Maar wat vaak vergeten wordt: ook bij Pogačar is zone 2 absoluut nog steeds een flinke inspanning, omdat hij dit vaak vijf uur lang volhoudt. Zijn vermogen, zuurstofverbruik en energieverbranding liggen hoog, de hele fysiologische keten is actief, ook al registreert zijn hartslag de inspanning als relatief laag. Voor recreanten is dat effect veel minder.4. Is zone 2 superieur aan andere trainingszones?Nee. Hoewel rustige duurtraining nuttig is voor basisuithouding, is zone 2 niet superieur aan zone 3. Integendeel, wat intensievere trainingen leveren vaak meer prikkel voor mitochondriën, hart en spieren. Voor wie weinig tijd heeft, zijn interval en tempo effectiever dan lange rustige kilometers. Het is dus belangrijk om de hype te relativeren en te zoeken naar balans.5. Wat zijn veelgemaakte fouten van recreatieve sporters met weinig tijd?Guido benadrukt dat veel recreanten te veel vertrouwen op “lekker rustige” duurloopjes of duurritjes. Die voelen productief, maar geven weinig adaptatie. Als je weinig tijd hebt, moet je juist de intensieve blokken prioriteit geven. Een training overslaan mag niet betekenen dat je interval of tempo laat vallen. Andersom levert een extra rustige duurtraining zelden echte vooruitgang op.6. Wat betekent durability en waarom is het belangrijk?Durability gaat over de mate waarin je prestatievermogen overeind blijft na urenlange belasting. Het draait niet alleen om energie, maar ook om mentale frisheid en blessurebestendigheid. Lange duurtraining kan hieraan bijdragen, omdat je leert efficiënt te blijven presteren ondanks vermoeidheid. In today's Cloud Wars Minute, I explore Workday's bold entry into the ERP space and share insights from my interview with Gerrit Kazmaier on how AI and data are reshaping enterprise software.Highlights00:24 — Last week, 30,000 people were at Workday's big Rising event in San Francisco. I had a chance to sit down with Product and Technology President Gerrit Kazmaier to talk about his views on how the Workday approach to ERP is going to be different from what we see from other players.01:08 — Kazmaier brings enterprise applications, data, data cloud, hyperscale — all those different backgrounds, expertise, and experiences — to Workday. And now he's taken a very aggressive agenda in these first six or seven months, leading up to this notion of ERP. Workday moved into the ERP space with a lot of new introductions, agents, and more at last week's Rising event.01:48 —And a couple of things that Kazmaier talks about: Kazmaier believes the ERP concept is right — giving business leaders a chance to see what's going on inside their companies from multiple perspectives with fully integrated applications. But he feels that the tools have been outdated, too difficult, too slow, too fragmented.02:08 —So Workday, although for its first 20 years had avoided getting into ERP, now feels that the time is right to give huge value to customers. Het verschil zit vaak in hun spiervezeltype. Maar hoe ontdek je wat jouw spieren je vertellen, en hoe gebruik je dat slim in training en herstel?In de aflevering van deze week spreken Gerrit en Jurgen met spierexpert Eline Lievens van de Universiteit Gent. Zij laat zien hoe een moderne test jouw spiervezeltypes zichtbaar maakt zonder pijnlijke biopten. En vooral: wat je er als sporter mee kunt, van betere trainingskeuzes tot gerichter herstel.Wil jij weten of jouw spieren meer op een jachtluipaard of een albatros lijken? Luister mee en ontdek hoe inzicht in je spiervezeltype jou kan helpen slimmer te presteren.Vragen die in deze aflevering worden beantwoord: 1. Wat zijn spiervezeltypes en waarom zijn ze relevant voor sport?Volgens Eline Lievens bestaat elke spier uit een mix van trage en snelle vezels. Trage vezels zijn efficiënt en volhardend, snelle vezels zorgen voor explosieve kracht. De verhouding bepaalt deels of iemand aanleg heeft voor duur- of krachtsport. Voor sporters en coaches is inzicht hierin waardevol, omdat het verklaart waarom trainingsrespons en herstel per individu zo sterk kunnen verschillen.2. Hoe werkt een moderne spiervezeltype test zonder biopt?Eline ontwikkelde samen met haar team in Gent een niet-invasieve MRI-techniek waarbij de stof carnosine in spieren wordt gemeten. Carnosine komt vaker voor in snelle vezels en geeft zo een betrouwbaar beeld van de verdeling. Deze methode vervangt het pijnlijke spierbiopt en wordt inmiddels toegepast door topsportclubs als Manchester United en de Belgische wielerbond. Ook in Nederland zijn veldtesten ontwikkeld om dit inzicht praktisch te benutten.3. Wat kan een sporter met de kennis van zijn spiervezeltype?Eline benadrukt dat kennis van je spiervezeltype helpt om training en herstel beter af te stemmen. Sporters met veel trage vezels kunnen doorgaans meer volume en frequentie aan, terwijl snelle vezeltypes gevoeliger zijn voor overbelasting en beter gedijen bij intensieve maar kortere prikkels. Dit inzicht helpt zowel individuele sporters als coaches in teamsporten om programma's te personaliseren.4. In hoeverre kun je je spiervezeltype trainen of veranderen?Onderzoek laat zien dat de verdeling tussen trage en snelle vezels grotendeels genetisch bepaald is en stabiel blijft. Wel kan training zorgen voor subtiele verschuivingen tussen subtypes, zoals van snelle IIx naar IIa vezels. Volgens Eline is het vooral zaak om je trainingen af te stemmen op je dominante vezeltype. Daarmee haal je het meeste rendement uit je aanleg, zonder onnodige risico's op blessures of overbelasting.5. Wat zijn de Muscle Talent Scan en Muscle Monitor?De Muscle Talent Scan is een instrument dat Eline ontwikkelde om jonge atleten inzicht te geven in hun spiervezeltype en zo te helpen bij de juiste disciplinekeuze. De Muscle Monitor is haar nieuwe onderzoeksproject dat kijkt naar de link tussen spiervezeltypes en gezondheid. Het doel: nagaan of bepaalde vezelprofielen een hogere kans geven op ziektes zoals diabetes of obesitas, en hoe training preventief kan werken.6. Welke lessen zijn er voor recreatieve sporters?Niet alleen topsporters profiteren van deze kennis. Voor iedere sporter kan een beter begrip van het eigen spiervezeltype helpen om slimmer te trainen. Zo kan een loper met veel snelle vezels beter kiezen voor minder...

In deze aflevering hebben Gerrit en Jurgen het over:Slimmer presteren met menthol: zinvol of onzin?INLEIDING:Je denkt er niet snel aan, maar soms zit slimmer presteren gewoon in een simpel snoepje. Tijdens de triathlon in Renkum besloot Jurgen een experiment te doen: een mentholsnoepje in zijn mond, in de hoop dat de frisse kick hem sneller zou maken.Het resultaat? Zijn neus ging open, zijn ademhaling voelde ruimer… maar of hij er echt harder van ging? Dat heb je vorige week kunnen horen.In de aflevering van deze week onderzoeken Gerrit, Jurgen en Guido of menthol meer is dan alleen een lekker fris gevoel. Ze bespreken recente studies, kijken naar de belofte van wetenschappers en de realiteit in de topsport. Want één ding staat vast: de perceptie van koeling is er, maar of dat ook echt je sportprestatie verbetert, blijft spannend.En er is een keerzijde: menthol kan je lichaam ook ‘foppen', waardoor je ongemerkt verder gaat terwijl je kerntemperatuur oploopt. Vragen die in deze aflevering worden beantwoord: 1. Wat doet menthol in het lichaam tijdens inspanning?Menthol activeert koude-receptoren (TRPM8) in mond en huid, waardoor je hersenen signalen krijgen dat het kouder is dan in werkelijkheid. Daardoor voelt ademhaling frisser en lijkt het lichaam minder warm, ook al verandert de kerntemperatuur nauwelijks. Het effect zit dus vooral in de perceptie van koeling.2. Wat zeggen wetenschappelijke studies over menthol en sportprestatie?Een review uit 2017 suggereerde dat mondspoelingen met menthol een positief effect kunnen hebben op volhoudtijd en prestatie in de hitte. Een meta-analyse uit 2025 laat echter zien dat dit effect klein en niet overtuigend is. Vooral in gecontroleerde labomstandigheden waren er kleine voordelen, maar bij commerciële producten zoals energiedranken of gels bleef het uit.3. Hoe gebruiken sporters menthol in de praktijk?Volgens Guido Vroemen ziet hij weinig topsporters die menthol structureel inzetten. Recreanten en sommige lopers proberen het wel, bijvoorbeeld via snoepjes of drankjes. Jurgen testte zelf een mentholsnoepje tijdens een triathlon en merkte vooral een frisser gevoel in ademhaling, maar geen objectieve prestatieverbetering.4. Wat zijn de mogelijke risico's van mentholgebruik tijdens sport?Het belangrijkste risico is dat je lichaam zich kouder voelt dan het werkelijk is. De effecten zijn sterker bij reizen naar het oosten.Hoe lang duurt het om te herstellen van een jetlag?Een veelgenoemde vuistregel is één dag per uur tijdsverschil. Vlieg je bijvoorbeeld acht uur terug uit Costa Rica, dan kan je lichaam ruim een week nodig hebben om volledig aangepast te zijn. Factoren zoals slaapkwaliteit, chronotype en lichtblootstelling bepalen hoe snel dit gaat.
