As we stood there on the shore of San Diego Bay taking in the sights of Comic-Con, Clint looked at me and asked, “Darrell, why do you do all of this?” I took a moment and gave him an answer I wasn't happy with then and I'm not happy with now. I told him that I enjoyed being around the celebrities and learning about all the new stuff that's coming out on TV this season. He looked at me with a dissatisfied expression. I've thought a lot about it since then, and here's the truthful answer he deserved that day. I wanted the recognition. I wanted the notoriety. I was motivated heavily by selfish ambitions. Here are 3 big things you need to know—   One — A federal judge says President Trump's employee buyout plan can resume.  Last month, Trump offered money to federal employees who resign their post, but multiple labor unions filed lawsuits saying the administration did not have legal authority to offer such buyouts.  A judge now disagrees and the Trump administration says the offer is closed. More than 75,000 employees have apparently taken the offer.   Two ---- Two Navy pilots are in stable condition after an F-18 fighter jet crashed into San Diego Bay yesterday morning. The pilots ejected safely and were rescued by the Coast Guard and taken to a nearby hospital.   And number three —  Governor Gretchen Whitmer is urging Michigan lawmakers to pass a short-term extension of Michigan's current minimum wage until July 1st.  At that point she hopes talks can continue. Restaurant owners, wait staff, bartenders, and others have been asking lawmakers to keep the lower wage in place. It's set to rise to be even with minimum wage in five years.

EXPLOSION REPORTED AT BUS DEPOT IN EL PASO.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-France: This afternoon an explosion was reported at a bar in the southeastern town of Grenoble. As this is a developing incident, few details remain confirmed. However locals on social media stated that an unknown assailant threw a hand grenade into the bar, resulting in the wounding of at least 10x people. AC: This attack took place in the old Olympic Village, which has become very heavily populated with immigrants from various Middle Eastern nations over the years, many of which have established homegrown storefronts in what traditionally would be described as residential buildings. The area that the attack took place in is only accessible by foot, and appears to be one of these improvised storefronts that does not appear on Google Maps. As such, it is possible that what is being described as a "bar" is probably an "internet cafe" that is being run out the ground floor of an apartment building that serves primarily Middle Eastern clientele; Internet cafes being extremely common features in most Arab nations, and thus usually popping up anywhere a largely Muslim diaspora settles. So far, most of the images/video from the scene indicate that at least a few victims were located in the vicinity of the rear exit door of the internet cafe at grid coordinate: 31T GL 14003 04723. This is most sharply evidenced by images of the attack site, and videos of the victims/witnesses speaking mostly Arabic. In any case French authorities have confirmed that the organized crime bureau will be handling this investigation, indicating that this may be less of a case of deliberate terrorism and more of an organized crime incident.Germany: Brief controversy was reported yesterday as SECDEF Pete Hegseth conducted a visit to American forces stationed in Europe. A small group of military spouses protested Hegseth's arrival at the U.S. Army garrison in Stuttgart. Separately, middle schoolers at the on-base Patch Middle School staged a walkout in response to Hegseth's visit. Both protest actions were carried out on base, and in opposition to the removal of all DEI initiatives across the Department of Defense.-HomeFront-California: Earlier this afternoon a US Navy aircraft crashed in San Diego Bay. Both crew members were rescued by a local fishing boat after ejecting from their E/A-18G Growler during a training flight. No word yet has been provided on the cause of the incident.Texas: Yesterday an explosion was reported at a public transportation maintenance depot at the airport in El Paso. 7x people were injured in the blast, which occurred at the Sun Metro Operations Center in the vicinity of the facilities used to perform maintenance on public buses. AC: At the moment, it's not immediately clear as to what caused the blast, but due to the context of El Paso being a sensitive location for more kinetic activities (due to the border crisis, and the growing conflict that is developing), a more thorough investigation into this incident is expected.Washington D.C. - Substantial anti-corruption efforts continue as before. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that FEMA was able to halt the transfer of $59 million to NYC, which resulted in the firing of senior FEMA leadership yesterday.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: While the protest at Stuttgart was small, and comprising mostly of what appears to be children and military spouses, conducting a political protest on base is a rather bold move. For those unaware of the wholly un-democratic nature of the US military, protesting DoD leadership on base is generally very unauthorized (though this does depend on the guidance set by the l

There are two campgrounds near downtown San Diego where we love to stay. One is the private luxury resort, Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay, and the other is an inland county campground, Sweetwater Summit Regional Park. These two RV parks are as different as Cape Cod and Big Bend. That's largely due to the chameleonic character of San Diego where the scenery changes about every five miles. One park is on San Diego Bay and the other is inland, at the foot of Mother Miguel Mountain on The Sweetwater River. The Sweetwater Summit Regional Park and Campground is set within nearly 1,000 acres of Sweetwater Valley on permanently preserved open space, surrounded by a metropolitan area. This Campground is a gold nugget for RVers looking for scenic, tranquil, private and clean no-hassle accommodations with easy freeway access to downtown San Diego. Jennifer Carruthers is one hell of a sharp brain on wine. Not surprising. She had a successful career as an engineer before deciding she was far more interested in the structure and story of a good wine. So she spent a decade studying wine as a broker and distributor—eventually making it to the Advanced Sommelier level (an incredibly byzantine, difficult and rare knowledge of wine). Finally, she launched her own company, JC Select Wines, which specializes in hand-picking wines for special events and clients. We asked her to come in and share a few things: The top six wines we all have to try, and the story behind them. The biggest trends and myths about wine—explain them and debunk them, please. And so she does. Hilariously. “Wine gets a bad rap from the people who sniff a glass and say ‘this was grown by a river, and there were three, possibly four, golden retrievers on the property,” she says. JC Select connects people to niche, hand-picked wines. Her mission to source wines from sustainable, top-notch makers goes way beyond “is this great wine?” She makes it a point to get to know the winemakers and chooses wines from those whose story she believes in. She shares the creators' stories with her clients—focusing on organic, small batch, and environmentally responsible brands. “Part of the end product is how they got there,” she says. “So it's how the grapes are grown, how they're cultivated. You know, they don't want to grow a whole bunch of grapes just to produce more fruit. They want that fruit to be of high quality.” Point is: wine should be more than just wine. Every bottle is a gateway to a good, compelling story of the humans behind it. Even harder stories about equality, worker rights, misuse of land and people. And Jennifer's got stories. Speaking of sailing, JC Select Wines is hosting its annual Champagne Sail aboard the Adventuress Luxury Catamaran, which takes riders on an all-inclusive scenic three-hour sail around San Diego Bay. The outing, open from April to Oct., will be equipped with Charles Heidsieck Champagne (the Champagne served on the Titanic, “which sometimes I opt not to tell people since we're on a boat in the open water,” she says). To hear Jennifer's six must-have wines from her personal cellar, listen to this week's full episode of Happy Half Hour In the news, a third Fig Tree Cafe opened late Jan. in Mission Valley—the Rise and Shine Hospitality Group who also run Breakfast Republic bring in another fine dining experience to the growing neighborhood. Sister concepts Pop Pie Co. and Stella Jean's Ice Cream opened up in Pacific Beach, expanding their warm, friendly atmosphere and killer desserts further across San Diego. Both establishments provide the perfect sweet treat for a sunny SD winter. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” both of the hosts find themselves craving seafood. David visits New England-inspired Sea Tavern in the heart of North Park. A Surf N' Turf “Double Double” built with a smashed Wagyu patty, crab croquette, onion jam, and frico-style cheddar mozzarella make this meal one for the books. Troy's going back for the lobster and shrimp roll at urban office park restaurant Farmer & The Seahorse run by chef Sam Deckman. A great place to take the family and let the kids run wild. Welcome to The Finest City's Knowledge to Action Series, where we interview movers and shakers covering six areas of land planning in our region: the urban core, mesas, valleys and canyons, San Diego Bay, the binational border, coastline and wetlands, and the backcountry. In this episode, host Jen Whitelaw speaks with urban planner Suchi Lukes who also spearheads C-3's Urban Core Knowledge Action Network. Suchi talks about her commitment to bringing together local thought leaders from planning, design, community development, and more to address San Diego's distinctive and pressing land use challenges.   Timestamps: [2:45] We often identify housing as the major challenge for the urban core, but Temporary Paradise called for the revitalization of commercial corridors as a way to anchor redevelopment. Suchi talks about the nexus between bringing back our historic main streets and building up stock in the urban core. [5:05] Suchi discusses Euclidean zoning, where you have your residential center in one area, and how this creates more flexibility in our developmental regulations. [6:05] One key challenge in the urban core is the availability of land. [8:47] What part should our urban core play as we try to develop climate resistance? [11:05] Our urban areas are pretty key in helping address climate change and shaping livability. [12:06] How do we reconcile established character and preservation in some cases, with new development? [18:07] Suchi discusses the Community Land Trust Model. [19:55] There is still much inequity in our park spaces that we need to address. [22:44] We have to have a holistic vision of how lower-income and minority folks can have a full quality of life and it can't just be done through planners. It has to be multiple sectors coming together, including community members, to make sure everyone has a voice and is able to advocate for their own needs. [23:26] How can people get more involved?   About C-3 In its 60 years of existence, Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3) has brought together local thought leaders from planning, design, policy, academia, community development, and more to address our region's distinctive and pressing land use challenges. In founding C-3 almost 60 years ago, architect Lloyd Ruocco's vision was to bring together our region's most creative minds from the arts, sciences, academia, and government to share ideas, learn new perspectives, and build fellowship around the idea of creating livable communities.   Opportunities for Advocacy and Engagement: C3sandiego.org Temporary Paradise Suchi Lukes

NHL – Red Wings aim for relevancy with moves in NHL free agency Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman just kick-started the franchise’s rebuild. Yzerman made bold moves when free agency opened Wednesday, generating a jolt of excitement for the once-proud franchise that it has not had since the former team captain was hired three-plus years ago. The Hockey Hall of Famer signed center Andrew Copp to a $28.1 million, five-year contract soon after the market opened. Yzerman also signed defenseman Ben Chiarot to a $19 million, four-year contract and a pair of wings to two-year deals. David Perron signed for $9.5 million and Dominik Kubalik for $5 million. NHL – Blackhawks make some minor free agent signings, nothing on Kane or Toews. The Chicago Blackhawks signed 4 players on the first day of NHL Free Agency.  Three forwards signed deals, Max Domi and Andreas Athanasiou each signed for one season, and Colin Blackwell signed a tow year deal.  Goalie Alex Stalock inked a one year deal.  The news is still quiet on Patrick Kane and Jonathon Toews, who each have one year left on their current contracts, which are for $10.5 million for this season.  NHL – Blue Jackets sign top NHL free-agent, "Johnny Hockey" The Columbus Blue Jackets landed the biggest prize on the opening day of NHL free agency by signing Johnny Gaudreau to a $68.25 million seven-year contract. The signing came a day after Johnny “Hockey” rejected an eight-year contract to stay in Calgary. Gaudreau’s signing highlighted a busy day. Claude Giroux is leaving Florida for a homecoming in Ottawa. The Washington Capitals landed Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Darcy Kuemper from Colorado. The New York Rangers signed forward Vincent Trocheck to a seven-year contract. This week, we welcome Don Wood to share his story of falling in love with San Diego, one surf session at a time. Don discusses a few of his key takeaways from working with SDG&E, the Community Action Partnership, and C-3. He talks about the climate of natural resource management in San Diego in the 1980s, and a few of the battles still being fought today. Don shares a few of C-3's biggest accomplishments that he is most proud of, and what we need to move forward with even more strength and purpose in the future.   Timestamps: [3:14] Don talks about how he got to San Diego, his education, and most importantly, the great surfing that made him fall in love with San Diego. After working for the county, he got a job at SDG&E. [8:47] C-3 was Don's first engagement in policy and land use issues in San Diego. How did he make his way to C-3? [9:02] When working for the Community Action Partnership, Don learned a lot about advocacy on behalf of low-income communities, economic development, and community. [9:24] Don describes the concept of natural resource management, and what the climate was in San Diego around that issue in the 1980s. Why was there tension between natural resource management and development as it relates to the San Diego Bay? [11:19] There is a constant war going on between the side that wants to preserve the environment and the development side. [21:21] One topic of importance at C-3 is the concept of ecotourism. What exactly is the job to get “heads in beds,” and why does cultivating a healthy tourism market matter? [30:28] Don shares what he thinks are a few of C-3's biggest achievements, including Temporary Paradise and the creation of SANDAG. [37:23] How was the public successfully convinced to support Proposition 70? What were some tactics used to advocate for The California Parks and Wildlife Preservation Act? [41:41] Don discusses what he thinks the next generation of planners and activities will face in San Diego, and how C-3 can provide education and assistance. [43:07] C-3 should be friends with the developers at BIA and friends with the Sierra Club and Environmental Health Coalition. [43:41] An organization of organizations and a network of networks, that's really what you're really trying to get set up. But don't let C-3 get lost in the mix, Don warns. Opportunities for Advocacy and Engagement: C3sandiego.org Phil Pryde San Diego Sierra Club San Diego River Improvement Project National Environmental Policy Act California Environmental Quality Act

I'm suspended fourteen stories above San Diego Bay. I am being dangled over the edge of a cliff made of metal. I smell vaguely of quality craft beer. I am an offering to the gods of amusement. Questioning life choices, my emotional state in that jittery nook between joy and terror. Just hanging there, looking directly down, wondering how good latch technology is these days. Intellectually, you know how safe this is. You know the byzantine safety measures in place. But intellect is no match for that primal scream inside you that says “WHAT THE NO.” This roller coaster's new trick (new to me, at least) is that, instead of just plunging you down the thrill drop, it dangles you over the edge and then stops for a full 3-5 seconds. Lets you take it all in. Then it lets you go. It just drops you, at a 90-degree angle, 143 feet down, 60 miles per hour freefall. Your feet just dangle the whole wild time. The Emperor, SeaWorld's new roller coaster, opens tomorrow (March 12). It's been two years in the making. It's the tallest, fastest, longest dive roller coaster in California. And it's where we podcast from this week. You can hear our adrenaline shakes. To commemorate the coaster's arrival, local craft brew success story Hess Brewing created the Emperor Hazy IPA—a juicy little number that's available exclusively at the park. And it's coinciding with SeaWorld's Seven Seas Food Festival and Craft Beer Festival, which runs now through May 1. VP of Marketing Erika Diprofio—whose name either sounds like a law firm or an expensive perfume—explains the coaster, the beer, and the cause (a portion of sales of the IPA will go to Penguins International). We also hassle the newest member of the SDM media team—our social media manager, Rachel Frank—and make her get on the mic with us to meet you guys. Rachel is a ball of energy and creative force. She created and ran her own music platform, www.listensd.com. She dressed as a panda “to meet friends” in San Diego, and it became such a big hit that she ended up dancing on stage in panda gear with Snoop Dogg, The Flaming Lips, you name it. During the pandemic, she created a short film, “I'm An Ant,” about the meaning of life in an ant costume. It's wonderfully weird, charming, creative. And… it's a finalist at Cannes World Film Festival—after winning Best Experimental Short at the Paris International Film Festival. She'll be creating the new SDM on social media going forward. We actively adore her. Point is, it feels good to be podcasting in public with real people again. Our Zoom-exclusively podcast era has come to a merciful end. In “Hot Plates,” we talk about one of San Diego's best brewpubs, Gravity Heights—a collaboration between master brewer Skip Virgilio (he co-founded AleSmith) and chef Ryan Johnston and Whisknladle Hospitality—which is planning to open a second location in Mission Valley, and Anthony Wells of Juniper & Ivy is a semifinalist for a James Beard Award. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” David's has a codependent relationship with soup (this time at Pho on Fifth), Erika professes her love for all things Callie, and Troy found himself in a sweet life spot while staring at warm focaccia bread with melted brie cheese, balsamic, and Granny Smith apples at Seneca, the rooftop restaurant from Consortium Holdings.

The Finest City
Public Access, Recreation, Iconic Architecture, and Civic Identity on the San Diego Bayfront

On July 17, Kate Goodson spoke with Port Commissioner Ann Moore and Architect Greg Miller about the San Diego Bayfront and the Port Master Plan. The three discuss how the plan will establish more connectivity between the waterfront and the community, the public outreach that's been done, and how the update will shape the way Port lands are developed for generations. Ann and Greg both spoke about what they are looking forward to in this Port Master Plan and how the updates will lead to an even more iconic and beautiful waterfront, plus a transparent method of providing accessibility and recreation to visitors and community members.   Timestamps: [1:32] Ann provides us with a brief history of the San Diego Bay and the multifaceted and comprehensive approach of the Port Master Plan. [3:50] The Port of San Diego is really unique from other ports, because of the wide variety of uses that they manage, including commercial use as well as traditional port activity. The Port Master Plan is important because it helps us manage and develop areas in compliance with both the Port Act and Coastal Act. It also balances the needs of development with natural resources. [6:02] Ann explains how the Port Master Plan will improve the function of the development of the land, and the larger sense of the vision for San Diego Bay in terms of civic identity and an asset used by everyone. She happily lets her “internal geek” out about this project and how excited she is for future possibilities. Although San Diego Bay is already quite beautiful, it can evolve even more to stay relevant and meet changing public needs. Two examples of iconic waterfronts are Sydney, Australia and Seattle. San Diego will also have new beautiful structures that modernize the San Diego Embarcadero, providing a world-class destination spot and thoughtful development. [10:27] The Port Master Plan has to understand diversity in recognizing the surrounding communities along the waterfront and adjacent to the Port. The Chula Vista Master Bayfront Plan will give people access to the water even more while connecting communities to make it easier for inhabitants to engage in full recreational activities. [13:42] Greg gives a history of the architecture firm Tucker Sadler, now celebrating 64 years in San Diego as of September. [16:10] The Plan will enhance the image and beauty we already have at the bayfront, and work with the Port, City, and Coastal Commissions to make sure all of the needs are met and accomplished. The project will create public access and a viewing deck; as Greg reminds us, the waterfront belongs to everyone and should be enjoyed by everyone. [19:15] The architecture is not just a building, it's an experience for everyone to enjoy. Integrating public access into projects that are typically private or inaccessible to the public will help the community truly feel as though the space is meant for them to enjoy and take pride in. [20:04] The idea of having public access is fundamental. The project will create transparency to try to provide a way for everyone to experience the waterfront in a different manner than they might have normally. [26:37] The Port Master Plan will look at different opportunities to access the bay not only from the land side but also the water side. The Chula Vista Bayfront is an example of how we can allow water taxis access through different areas of the Bay. [32:02] Greg and Ann speak about how they have been successful with stakeholders, and the very critical component from the start of making sure a large public outreach program was set in place. Between open houses, meetings, public workshops, and online surveys, there have been 19 million points of contact since 2017. Opportunities for Advocacy and Engagement: C3sandiego.org Ann Moore Port Master Plan San Diego Symphony Bayside Performance Park Enhancement Project Portside Pier Chula Vista Master Bayfront Plan
