Sobeys, one of the three biggest grocery store chains in Canada, has vowed to “rectify any issues" after allegations that the manager of its longtime kosher food store in Thornhill, Ont., crossed the line as part of an ongoing feud with the CEO of a rival supermarket. In the first week of April, just ahead of a hectic Passover shopping weekend for Canadian Jews, the CEO of the Olive Branch—a five-month-old kosher market in the Promenade mall, just a four-minute drive down the same street from the Sobeys in question—alleged that the nearby Sobeys manager had threatened kosher caterers looking to do Passover business with both companies. According to a widely distributed letter, Olive Branch's Justin Lesnick alleged that vendors he hired to sell prepared Passover take out food such as meatballs and kugels at his store were told they would lose their much larger contracts with Sobeys if they did so. The confrontation bled out into social media, where Lesnick's complaints about corporate bullying took the story viral. Now many customers are vowing to boycott Sobeys over what happened. But is this a true David-versus-Goliath fight? Or is it the latest in a long-simmering war between the two businessmen—neither of whom is Jewish? And what should customers know? On today's episode of The CJN Daily, host Ellin Bessner digs into the story. She spoke to Lesnick and Sobeys and some concerned customers to understand how the face-off is dividing the community before Passover. Interview by Kris PetersSydney metal outfit Inertia announced themselves on the scene last year with the release of their debut album, Second Shadow.Blending the boundaries of the genre by bringing elements of dark pop and soul to the surface of a melting pot that traverses the darkest reaches of hard rock and metal, Second Shadow opened Inertia up to a generation of music lovers yearning for acceptance through music.It helped secure the quintet a host of shows, touring the nation extensively supporting Polaris, Dayseeker (US), Bury Tomorrow (US), Northlane, Holding Absence, Caskets (UK), Thy Art Is Murder, Thornhill and more. They played Good Things Festival Sydney last December, and recently travelled their way across regional Australia with In Hearts Wake.It has been true reward for effort, culminating in their own headline Australia tour, starting April 19 in Sydney and hitting Brisbane and Adelaide before finishing in Melbourne on April 27.HEAVY caught up with guitarist Mark, bass player Oliver and vocalist Julian to find out the details. "It has exceeded expectations for us. Streams are going really well and live, people seem to receive the songs really well as well. So, yeah, it's blown expectations out of the water."In the modern age of music where streaming is king and figures are readily available, we ask how deeply a band looks into the rabbit hole and how they measure expectations when it comes to a debut album."I think it's just do better," Julian measured. "Each record needs to be bigger and better. I don't think we go into an album thinking we're going to get a specific result. We just write the best music that we can at that given time and push ourselves to be better. While Heroine revelled in lush textures and bold, curated aesthetics, Bodies finds Thornhill opening the floodgates to spontaneity. Balancing intensity with boundless creative freedom and ingenuity, album number three for Thornhill is not only a definitive snapshot of a band in full flight just shy of a decade into their staggering career; it's also a celebration of authenticity and gripping dynamism from one of Australia's most engaging heavy acts.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Jacob Charlton and guitarist Ethan McCann to talk more."I think the first thing that we wanted to sit down to after Heroine was we wanted a lot more energy and a lot more pace in the music," Ethan explained. "We found that when we took Heroine to our live show it felt like it was dragging at times. Because we started playing heavy music when we were teenagers we kind of missed that energy, and seing that reaction in real time."We ask how they actually achieved that, to which Ethan replied, "I think just a lot more focus on rhythm, and drumbeat.
