RE 535: How to Let Go...

Today we have Kayleen. She is 27 years old, lives in Baltimore, MD and she took her last drink on April 6th, 2025.   Sponsors for this episode include: Better Help – 10% off of your first month Café RE – the social app for sober people   There are a few spots left for Peru in October 2025. On this 10-night, 11-day trip of a lifetime, we will be hiking the Inca Trail and participating in two service projects. Registration closes in about three weeks.   [02:35] Thoughts from Paul:   There is so much speak in the recovery world about letting go. In recovery meetings, many of the topics are centered around letting go.   Paul shares that he has spent years thinking he needed to figure out HOW to let go. Like there was a secret technique that was missing. In fact, all you can do is realize you're holding on and this awareness is the first real step towards letting the sunshine in. Once you realize you are holding on, or bring awareness to something weighing you town, it immediately begins to shift on its own, and you don't have to let it go.   Another thought is that it's not even about letting GO, it's more about letting IN. If something is nagging you, don't let it go, let it in. It will eventually leave on it's own, when the time is right, when it's resolved.   Paul encourages us to have the strength to see where you're holding on and then invite it in a little more.   [09:23] Paul introduces Kayleen:   Kayleen is 27, lives in Baltimore, and works as a server in a fine dining restaurant. She enjoys walking, being in nature, painting and going to Café RE meetings.   Kayleen says she never drank normally. She recalls being in ninth grade and taking swigs of liquor from her mom's cabinet before getting on the school bus in the morning. Looking back, she thinks that she was always looking to escape her feelings.   In college, Kayleen didn't go to parties and drink with others. She preferred to drink at home and didn't want anyone to know how much or how often she was drinking. She would frequently drink before going to class and eventually was suspended from the university.     Kayleen was sent to detox three times in college for her drinking and self-harm. She wasn't ready to quit drinking and would start back as soon as she got out. When she was 21, she was arrested twice for DUIs, and she wasn't willing to stop drinking.   A year later Kayleen was married and their relationship revolved around alcohol where they drank together daily. Over the next three years Kayleen gained over 100 pounds, and her mobility was suffering. A doctor told her that due to her poor health, she might not see age 30. For Kayleen, the idea of quitting drinking didn't feel like a possibility.   In April of 2023, Kayleen discovered the RE podcast. Within a month of listening frequently, Kayleen decided to quit drinking on May 25th – just for that one day. She woke up feeling so proud of herself she kept going. A few months later she joined Café RE and found community.   Kayleen began walking and ended up losing 60 pounds in the first year of sobriety. Her wife had quit drinking too, but that wasn't enough to save the marriage. Kayleen ended up divorcing her wife and moved from Indiana to Baltimore to stay with her accountability partner that she met through Café RE.   In April of this year, Kayleen's sister got married and it was at the wedding that she relapsed. She said within a day she was drinking just like she was before quitting and quickly turned to her community for help. Kayleen says she decided to quickly shred the shame and make sure she didn't get stuck in a “woe is me” place. The community lifted her up and helped her realize that she didn't lose her sobriety time and Kayleen shares that she learned a lot from the experience.   Kayleen's parting piece of guidance: Just keep trying. Never, never, never give up on yourself.   Recovery Elevator You took the elevator down, you gotta take the stairs back up. This week, a conversation with iconic designer Norma Kamali. Recorded over Zoom from her office in Manhattan, we cover her 50-year career, from graduating from FIT with a degree in illustration to working for Northwest Airlines—which allowed her to fly to London on the weekends for only $29. It felt like a time capsule to hear her talk about the cultural revolution in London in the 1960s and how she would bring back pieces for friends, which led her to start a store, and eventually design her own pieces. Soon her designs were worn by Bianca Jagger, Bette Midler, and Cher. But at 29 Norma left her marriage, which meant walking away from the brand she'd quietly built with only $98 in her pocket. But starting over ultimately led her to create a brand with longevity and panache. From her unique sleeping bag coat design (worn by the doormen at Studio 54 and by those standing outside hoping it would increase their chances of getting in) to the now-iconic red swimsuit Farrah Fawcett wore on that famous poster, Norma has dressed generations. She's full of wisdom and perspective and gently gives me advice on everything from aging, to dating (she fell in love again ten years ago at 65), to how she views busyness—she says “the more you do, the more you can do.” We get into her thoughts on her industry's evolution and on upcoming generations. I hope I did her career and story justice in this conversation with a real icon. Show notes:- Find Norma on the Web | Instagram- Find me on IG: @letitouttt + @katiedalebout | Substack- 2 spots left in the Creative Clinic: book a call with me here- More on Creative Underdogs/In Process here | waitlist- Check out the Let It Out Kits | Write Kit | Talk Kit Waitlist- Kayleen Schaefer's episode- Kayleen's book, Text Me When You Get Home- Take the "We Don't Talk Anymore" survey on friend breakups- Learn more about my creative consulting & if you'd like to book a free session, book here!- Learn more about "Soft Stories"

This week, Drewby and Yergy discuss the case of newborn baby, Kayleen Lee Blaha. Little Kayleen was born to meth-addicted parents and drowned in a bathtub shortly after her unplanned home birth, all because her mother, Taylor, was afraid that authorities would find drugs in the little girl's system. To add insult to injury, the baby's father, Brandon Thoma, discarded the newborn's remains as if they were garbage. His body has yet to be recovered.  Support Our Patreon For More Unreleased Content: https://www.patreon.com/themiserymachine PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/themiserymachine Join Our Facebook Group: https://t.co/DeSZIIMgXs?amp=1 Instagram: miserymachinepodcast Twitter: misery_podcast Discord: https://discord.gg/kCCzjZM #themiserymachine #podcast #truecrime Source Material: https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.16 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100075489704440 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100079187583130 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.54 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.96 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.75 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.33 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.10 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.3 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.94 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.35 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008120749470 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.946 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.104 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100009699468054 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100006231258992 https://www.facebook.com/taylor.blaha.1044 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100088416010473 https://www.facebook.com/brandon.thoma https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008700405880 https://www.facebook.com/shannon.monson.7/   Video Sources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKhkdhnas0U&ab_channel=WeAreIowaLocal5News https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeFR_ROn_IU&ab_channel=WHO13 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrMB1VO-FJM&ab_channel=WeAreIowaLocal5News https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-zcvmEv7Uc&ab_channel=WeAreIowaLocal5News https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTLr9ch9U-o&ab_channel=WeAreIowaLocal5News https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KswUhHuq2o&ab_channel=KCAU-TVSiouxCity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FudvZk0osKQ&ab_channel=KCCI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gwjq3e7ST2c&ab_channel=KCCI

Welcome back to Talking PFAS Podcast I am a journalist and your host Kayleen Bell. And if you are joining us for the first time welcome.  My guest today is Professor Ian Cousins from the Department of Environmental Science at Stockholm University in Sweden.  Now I have interviewed Ian before in Episode 21 when we spoke about his PFAS Essential Use paper and I highly recommend a listen to that one. Professor Cousins has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of York and a PhD in environmental science from Lancaster University.  He is well-known for his research on the sources, transport and fate and exposure pathways of PFAS.  In recent years Professor Cousins has written a series of policy related articles driven by his concern about the continued use of PFAS.  Today we are going to be discussing his recent perspective paper “Outside the Safe Operating Space of a New Planetary Boundary for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS” published in the Environmental Science & Technology journalist on the 2/8/2022. Ian and colleagues state in their conclusion: “We conclude that PFAS define a new planetary boundary that has been exceeded based on PFAS levels in environmental media being ubiquitously above guideline levels.  Irrespective of whether or not one agrees with our conclusion that the planetary boundary for PFAS is exceeded. It is nevertheless highly problematic that everywhere on earth where humans reside, recently proposed health advisories can not be achieved without large investment in advanced clean up technology.” I will be heading to Adelaide in a couple of days (actually here now) for the International Clean Up Conference Adelaide 2022 where I hope to talk to a range of experts in Australia and around the world about some of those advanced clean up technologies that might exist now or be emerging so stay tuned for that one.  The US EPA has made some significant announcements regarding PFAS in the last couple of months and in today's episode I will provide details of these.  Ian Cousins et al paper “Outside the Safe Operating Space of a New Planetary Boundary for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)” https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.2c02765 EPA's proposed rule to designate PFOA and PFOS as hazardous substances Federal Register https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2022-09-06/pdf/2022-18657.pdf EPA Announces New Drinking Water Health Advisories for PFAS Chemicals https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-announces-new-drinking-water-health-advisories-pfas-chemicals-1-billion-bipartisanSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Show notes:- Find Norma on the Web | Instagram- Norma's book, I Am Invincible- Kayleen Schaefer's episode- Kayleen's book, Text Me When You Get Home- Take the "We Don't Talk Anymore" survey on friend breakups- Learn more about "Soft Stories"- Learn more about my creative consulting & if you'd like to book a free session, book here!- Subscribe to our newsletter to get show notes + essays, etc. sent to your inbox- Follow @letitouttt on Instagram. I'm @katiedalebout Sponsors:Asian Boss Girl: a podcast for the modern day Asian professional woman hosted by Melody Cheng, Helen Wu, & Janet Wang.  Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to your favorite shows!Credit Karma: find low-interest personal loans to bring down credit card debt and save you money.
