Whitney Grace is digging through her queue of old new stock interviews and pulls this beauty out with Chris Prynoski! Chirs Prynoski is the founder and head of Titmouse Inc., an independent animation studio that's been making a name for itself since 2000. Titmouse Inc. has worked on a variety of cartoons for Disney, Adult Swim, and Netflix as well as feature films Nerdland, Teen Titans Go, and the new Foxy Trotter and Hanazuki.
Animation guru and Titmouse Founder Chris Prynoski offers very specific advice for aspiring animators and considers the question "Is Art School worth it?"
Chris Prynoski never dreamed he would run his own animation studio until he started to do just that with Titmouse Inc. Chris joins episode 138 of the podcast to talk about starting out in animation in the early nineties at MTV, working on many titles in the Liquid Television era. Chris also worked on Beavis and Butthead Do America, helping to plot out the famous hallucination sequence in the movie. But then Chris just wanted to start his own T-shirt company on the side of his animation career, and Titmouse was born. Chris quickly learned he could actually start his own animation studio, and Titmouse has become a giant player in cartoons today, producing fan favorites on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and Netflix including Metalocoplyse, The Venture Brothers, and Big Mouth. Titmouse Inc is also integral in one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns in history for Critical Role - The Legend of Vox Machina, a new animated series based in the realm of Dungeons and Dragons. Nerdland was produced by Adult Swim production powerhouse Titmouse Inc., the group of animators responsible for creating some of the most revolutionary cartoons to have been featured on television ever. These guys made the contemporary classics Black Dynamite, China, IL, Metalocalypse, Superjail! and The Venture Brothers, which everyone should check out if only for their sheer abrasive creativity. The same can be said for Nerdland; the script, penned by Se7en screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, contributes a little extra insanity. The film is certainly not for everyone (at one point you get a little too acquainted with one of the protagonist's buttholes), but it is one of the most unique films you will see all year. No Film School's Jon Fusco sat down with Mr. Walker and Chris Prynoski, head honcho at Titmouse, who was so stricken by the script that he requested to direct the film. We discussed how the director and writer's collaboration should be so seamless that the audience shouldn't be sure who's responsible for what in the final cut.
TMNT is getting a 2D animated special from Titmouse Inc, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" Disney XD series shows some serious action with its new trailer and Chinese animation shows it's on the rise in a big way with "Rock Dog." There were also two passings we mention this week: wrestler and actor "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and animation historian and reporter John Culhane. In other news, apparently there's a PEZ movie coming (PEZ like the candy not PES the animator... which would be fascinating and wanted). Also, Stephen is back from traveling and as such is in front of a nice sounding mic instead of the patchwork sounds of the tablet you heard for the last few weeks. I (Stephen) am back in NY on my new Wacom Companion 2 and it actually handled the recording and editing rather well! Rob and I talk 3 trailers, 2 series announcements, 3 audience questions and many more stories in our Rapid Fire segment! Of the trailers, "Peanuts" absolutely blew us away (retroactive spoiler alert). I also take the beginning of the podcast to talk about the Wacom Companion 2 and Adobe Flash CC 2015.
