Words by Kris PetersTwo of the all-time punk greats have returned to Australia, with pioneering California dynamos PENNYWISE and beloved Swedish trailblazers MILLENCOLIN touched down and ready to co-headline a huge run Down Under.A band synonymous with punk rock and thought-provoking lyricism, PENNYWISE erupted out of the vibrant coastal setting of Hermosa Beach in California with their self-titled debut album in 1991, ultimately going on to change the sonic landscape and cultivate a sweltering legacy via their unique blend of DIY spirit, hardcore, skate punk and SoCal pop punk. Renowned for their ability to fuse raw emotion and ravenous energy with themes of empowerment and rallying calls for change, PENNYWISE encapsulate the essence of rebellion with anthems like Bro Hymn and Fuck Authority, while also remaining as fundamental to punk rock and hardcore as stage dives and guitars. With twelve studio albums, including their Certified Gold records About Time (1995), Full Circle (1997) and Straight Ahead (1999), PENNYWISE have also showcased their formidable onstage presence across the globe for decades alongside the biggest names in the scene, most recently supporting Dropkick Murphys for a huge North American tour, and also for Aussie audiences last year as part of Good Things Festival. A band fluent in balancing the spirit of punk alongside subversion and celebration, PENNYWISE are primed to bring the revolution to Australian audiences in 2025.HEAVY spoke with bass player Randy Bradbury to find out more."Not much, really," he replied when we ask what has changed with Pennywise since they were last in Australia. "We've been on the same trajectory for a while. For us, it's about getting out there and playing live and having energetic shows. You wouldn't wanna change that, so not a lot has changed. The important stuff is still intact."In the full interview we talk about Australia being like a second home, how good it feels to have half the tour sold out before they even board the plane over here, touring with Millencolin and why the two bands work well together, what we can expect live, his early days in the band and getting used to being in a band he previously loved, sticking to your guns musically and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Six-time Grammy winner, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer, and Kennedy Center honoree Amy Grant joins us to chat about the pursuit of honesty in songwriting, the stories behind some of her songs, and her catalog of modern day Christmas classics. PART ONEPaul and Scott chat about the idea of a "definitive" version of a Christmas song, discuss their favorites, debate about Christmas songs they love and hate, and delve into Scott's elementary school crush on Amy Grant. PART TWOOur in-depth interview with Amy GrantABOUT AMY GRANTPerhaps the most influential pioneer of the Contemporary Christian Music genre, Amy Grant released her first album while still in high school. Her fourth album, 1982's Age to Age, found unprecedented success with hit singles such as “Sing Your Praise to the Lord” and “El Shaddai.” Age to Age topped the Christian album chart for 85 weeks, earned Amy her first Grammy award, and became the first Christian album to be certified Platinum by the RIAA. Her 1984 album Straight Ahead spawned hits with Amy's original compositions “Thy Word” and “Angels,” and became the first Christian album to land on the Billboard 200. By the mid-1980s, she further crossed over to mainstream success when “Find a Way,” which she wrote with Michael W. Smith, hit the Top 40 on Billboard's pop chart. The following year, Amy reached the top of the pop chart with “The Next Time I Fall,” a duet with Peter Cetera. Her 1991 album Heart in Motion sold 5 million copies and spawned four Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including the self-penned hits “Baby Baby” and “Every Heartbeat.” That same year, she enjoyed another Top 10 pop hit as a songwriter with Michael W. Smith's “Place in This World.” Amy continued to find mainstream success in the mid-1990s with singles such as “House of Love,” a duet with her now-husband Vince Gill, as well as the songs “Lucky One” and “Takes a Little Time,” which she wrote with Keith Thomas and Wayne Kirkpatrick, respectively. Starting with 1983's A Christmas Album, holiday music has been an important part of Amy Grant's artistry. She has since released the albums Home for Christmas, which was certified three-times Platinum; A Christmas to Remember; Tennessee Christmas; and The Animals' Christmas, a collaborative album with Art Garfunkel featuring songs by Jimmy Webb that explore the nativity story from the perspective of the animals. Amy's original songs “Tennessee Christmas” and “Breath of Heaven” have become modern day holiday standards. Her Christmas concerts, often featuring husband Vince Gill and longtime collaborator Michael W. Smith, have become a holiday tradition. To date, Amy has released twenty studio albums and has sold over 30 million records worldwide. Seventeen of her albums have reached #1 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart, more than any other artist in history. She has won 6 Grammy awards, 26 Dove awards, and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Amy has received honorary doctorates from two universities, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2021. She was a recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievement in 2022.
Cheri Christensen was born in Enumclaw Washington, a small rural town of horse, dairy and cattle ranches at the foot of Mt. Rainier. Cheri's grandfather was a cattle rancher there and he was a big influence on her choice of subject matter today. Cheri studied oil painting and drawing intensely for three years with Ron Lukas, a protege of Sergei Bongart, who taught in the tradition of the Russian Impressionists. Cheri concentrates on seeing and conveying the effects of color and light on form. The first painting she submitted to a competition was included in a prestigious exhibition at the Charles Emma Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Washington, and the first painting to include farm animals received the Beatrice Jackson Memorial award for Best Traditional Landscape in the Allied Artists of America 1995 show. Currently, Cheri is represented at several galleries, McLarry Fine Art in Santa Fe N.M., InSight Gallery in Fredericksburg Texas, Eisenhauer Gallery on Martha's Vineyard, and Roby King Gallery on Bainbridge Island, WA. Cheri has been featured in several magazines such as American Art Collector, Western Art Collector, and Southwest Art Magazine. She currently has 5 videos available through Liliedahl Video Productions, "Straight Ahead," "Highlight," "Keeping an Eye Out," " Bushwork & Backlight" and her new video "The Color of White" where she demonstrates both her brush and palette knife techniques. She is also featured in the books, "Art Journey, New Mexico," and "Finding your Visual Voice. A Painter's Guide to Developing an Artistic Style." She currently resides in Texas. " I am inspired by the simple everyday interaction of the animals in their environment: the way the light dances across the form, the harmony of color relationships and the shapes of light and shadow. I prefer early-morning light or late afternoon settings, with extreme back-lighting. My focus is on the farm animals, their character and the use of color, light and texture to convey a mood. On tonight's episode, we walk through some takeaways from a fascinating end of season press conference from the Winnipeg Jets. With much candor on display from players and staff, what stood out the most? Is Rick Bowness indicating his plans to step away from the bench after this season? Will he consider moving into a front office role instead? What did Hellebuyck say about his playoff performance, and is he happy with the team in front of him? Where do Brendan Dillon and Dylan DeMelo fit in with the grand scheme of Winnipeg's future? Have the players given the green light to start adding more youth into the mixture? Time for a throwback! This is a recording from 2021 of a panel Straight Ahead hosted during Geek Girl Conline. We hosted a round table discussion with Samia Khalaf, Steph Rizo, and Li Cree. We take this rare opportunity to share some of the many different paths one can take breaking into the animation industry. We talk about personal pitfalls in our early years, and how relatable those experiences can be. Samia tells us about her film she painted in VR, Kteer Tayyeb, and why she chose to tell this story. Steph talks about working on the bluesky phase of feature film. Li tells us the "secret" to how she creates so many personal projects. This and so much more as we take a dive back in time! Many thanks to Alyssa Askew, Alyssa Jones-Comtois, Marina Martinez, and the entire GGC staff for inviting us to host this event. Outside of her career, we get to talk about Kelly's time as a professional Dungeon Master. From an online presence, to personal games run on Cruise ships, Kelly talks about how the storytelling informs her writing and vice versa. We touch on the subject of Native visibility, not only in the industry, but in America at large. We chat about her personal Native American Renaissance, as she dove into the history of her own people, and how connecting to those roots helped feed into her experience on Spirit Rangers. For the mentees, SFA gets them into a big meeting with all the mentors in order to pair them up with the appropriate board artist that understands what their goals are and who vibes well together. Jim and Tristan also share their stories, and how they both switched out of full careers outside of animation before entering this creative space.
