Alan takes a trip down memory lane, revisiting "The Scallion," a satirical dental news project he and colleagues created (inspired by The Onion) back in the Dental Hacks era (circa 2017-2018). In this episode, Alan reads several archived "Scallion" articles, finding they still hold up with humor poking fun at: Aggressive sales reps at dental meetings. Dentists avoiding shop talk at parties. Exaggerated links between periodontal disease and other health issues. Hilariously inaccurate dental stock photography. The shocking revelations that can come with using dental loupes for the first time. Over-the-top (and potentially condescending) marketing advice. The classic "I hate dentists" patient comment. If you haven't heard of The Onion, a satirical news publication, you've no doubt come across the many memes and parodies inspired by its style. The Onion began with a group of scrappy Gen-Xer's who wanted to poke fun at mainstream news. It's evolved into an at times biting, oftentimes comic, cultural critic. What role does humor play in making the world make sense? Author Christine Wenc, a member of The Onion's original staff, joins Dana Taylor on the Excerpt to discuss her new book “Funny Because It's True,” which is on bookshelves now. Last year, after pressure from activist investors, Jeff Lawson stepped down from his perch as CEO from Twilio, the cloud communications company he co-founded. But he didn't spend any time twiddling his thumbs — that same spring, he bought the satirical news organization The Onion, and by the end of the year, they'd tried to buy Alex Jones' Infowars at a bankruptcy auction.  Jeff also stayed busy on the political front, continuing his work on DemocracyFirst, a political action committee he co-founded, in 2022, to support candidates committed to democracy.  So there was plenty to chew on when Kara interviewed Jeff last week at Democracy's Information Dilemma, a symposium hosted by the University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. They discuss the tech founder mindset; how Jeff is remaking The Onion; why political satire is more necessary than ever; why DEI — which Jeff championed as a CEO — can sometimes do more harm than good; and how to fight for democracy during Trump 2.0. Everyone knows the satirical news outlet The Onion. But did you know that The Onion's roots are in Madison? The online behemoth was started in 1988 by a group of UW-Madison students and their friends simply as a way to earn some extra cash. But little did they know it would grow to be something so much bigger than they could have ever imagined. To get the details on the origins of The Onion and why it still strikes a nerve with folks, we sat down with Christine Wenc, author of “Funny Because It's True: How The Onion Created Modern American News Satire” and one of the original Onion staffers. Catch Christine in conversation with Steve Paulson, executive producer of To the Best of Our Knowledge, March 18 at the Art Lit Lab. Wanna talk to us about an episode? After the BIg Wigs live show last week at City Winery, the girls are back in studio to recap the Knockouts festival. Anna's rocking a raspy low tone on the show after talking for seven hours straight on two different panels while Dre spent the weekend house hunting with her parents all around Jersey. The Big Wig Bites segment is sooo back with a Hillstone Osaka style pressed sushi shoutout. Plus Dre tries Outback Steakhouse for the first time and gives her review of the blooming onion…because obviously. Also Wendy Williams drops a handwritten note from her window and plans to stop by The View on Friday for a TV appearance. Lady Gaga is back on SNL, Kylie and Timmy C popped up at Indian Wells and Bianca Censori may or may not be roller-skating to work fully naked (??). Rihanna just gave birth to her second baby in pearls and Celine sunnies, naturally. Over in reality tv land, The Traitors crowned a winner and Anna debriefs on the Love Is Blind Reunion.
