We learn what people think are the most romantic cities in the U.S. to go on a date, and we're just glad Vegas wasn't on the list. Sarah reveals the most disturbing fact Susie says we've ever learned on the show--it's a statistic about men's underwear and we are NOT OK (and clearly, neither are men). We find out about Matt Damon's (female!) stunt double, and why she is our badass bitch of the week. We hear what the secret is to being a "supermover" in old age, and we aspire! Sarah talks about her love of Thrifty Ice Cream, and how one business owner is keeping it alive. We hear how a group of students is solving cold cases and we discuss how some relatives of criminals like Charles Manson worry the evil acts of their family member might reflect on their own characters.00:00 - Brain Candy Club and Tombstone Philosophy02:06 - Keypad Installation and Appliance Woes11:52 - Unveiling America's Top Romantic Destinations18:01 - The Disturbing Truth About Men's Underwear Habits26:49 - Meet Devin Dalton, Matt Damon's Female Stunt Double29:26 - Simple Tests to Gauge Your Functional Fitness34:14 - The Unsung Heroines of Stunt Performance41:21 - How Fast Walking Boosts Brain Health in Old Age47:02 - The Surf Shop Keeping Thrifty Ice Cream Alive51:23 - Al's Job Impact and the Joy of Fidget Toys53:36 - High School Students Reignite Unsolved Murder Investigations56:51 - Exploring the Legacy of Charles Manson's Family01:02:44 - Final Thoughts and Community Engagement Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Go to https://thrivecausemetics.com/braincandy for an exclusive offer of 20% off your first order.Visit https://www.carawayhome.com/braincandypod to take an additional 10% off your next purchase.TDM-RESERVATION: 1. There is a new documentary coming out about Olympic breakdancer and academic, Raygun, and we don't know how we're going to be able to wait for its release. In the meantime, we talk about Amanda Knox's decision to try her hand at comedy, and why we think maybe she should do literally anything else. We debate whether it's inappropriate for her to make light of a murder or whether being wrongfully accused means she is a victim too, thus giving her more freedom to make jokes. We hear about a golf cheater and how his life is ruined over the dumbest lie ever told. We find out about an uber driver who has been in jail for years for accidentally transporting marijuana. We debate the rights of a surrogate who refused to terminate her pregnancy despite the agreement she'd made with the birth parents. We discuss why microwave beeps are so annoying. We hear about a football team who used "color theory" to intimidate their opposition in the locker room. We find out why wedding gifts in Japan have less value now and we learn why reading literally any book makes you less likely to die.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)TDM-RESERVATION: 1. Sarah explains why she is accused of being a "pick me" girl, why she chooses optimism, and how she adjusted her natural tendencies over time. What does it take to tear up a million-dollar check and bet everything on a dream? That's exactly what Tim Gannon did when he walked away from Al Copeland to co-found Outback Steakhouse with just $37 in his pocketIn this episode, Dan Rowe sits down with Tim to unpack the philosophy, partnerships, and food obsession that turned a scrappy steakhouse concept, born from a Crocodile Dundee viewing session, into one of the most iconic casual dining empires in history.Tune in as we explore:(02:03) Tim Gannon's journey from Florence to food(05:55) The dinner that inspired chef-driven casual dining(09:26) ‘Serious Food Meetings' and exacting standards(10:25) Tearing up a million-dollar check(12:09) The four partners and their distinct roles(15:07) How Outback got its name and Australian theme(22:01) The Manager Partner Program that changed lives(28:34) How the partner model fueled explosive growth(30:14) Real estate strategy and the 2:1 sales ratio(35:05) Putting the partner's name above the door(36:34) Lessons from international expansion(39:20) ‘Principles and Beliefs' culture documentOn why knowing your product to exacting standards separates good from greatTim Gannon: "I can eat a Bloomin' Onion today and tell you if it was cooked at 342 or 349 temperature. That's knowing your products to exacting standards. That's what George was."On why making money with people, not from them, is the real business modelTim Gannon: "I wanted to make my money with someone, not for someone. And that was a very important lesson because I knew Al Copeland and he would pay me well, but it would always be kind of his money. I was uncomfortable with that."On why taking care of your people first is the only sequence that worksTim Gannon: "The first commitment was to our Outbackers. Think about your employees first, because if you take care of them, they're going to take care of the guests. Well, the financial guy's going to be happy. The financial results are always going to be there."

Nesbit A newly married couple dismisses a local legend about marble knight effigies that walk at night; this proves unwise. 93 “Phantasmagoria” — Lewis Carroll A comic ghost poem, more playful than frightening, about ghostly rules, manners, and the absurd bureaucracy of haunting. 94 “Schalken the Painter” — Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu A Gothic tale of art, money, and damnation, centered on a young painter, a lost love, and a sinister suitor who may not be alive. 95A “The Shadows on the Wall” — Mary E. Wilkins Freeman After a family death, strange shadows appear on the wall, turning grief, guilt, and suspicion into a supernatural judgment. 95B “Tales of Treasure” — Anonymous A very short treasure-haunting piece; more of a compact eerie anecdote than a full plotted ghost story. 96 “The Trial for Murder” — Charles Dickens A murder victim's ghost appears around the trial of the accused killer, pushing the living world toward justice. 97A “Uncle Abraham's Romance” — E. Nesbit A gentle, melancholy ghost-romance about an old man, a beautiful portrait, and a love story touched by death. 97B “The Beast in the Cave” — H. P. Lovecraft An early Lovecraft story: a man lost in a cave hears something coming through the dark, and the final reveal is grim and human. 98 “The Ebony Frame” — E. Nesbit A haunted-portrait romance in which a woman in an old picture seems able to step out of the frame, but at a terrible cost. 99 “The Red Room” — H. G. Wells A skeptic spends the night in a supposedly haunted room and discovers that the true ghost may be fear itself. 100 “The Bell in the Fog” — Gertrude Atherton A Henry James-flavored Gothic story about an inherited English estate, old portraits, reincarnation, and family tragedy. 101 “The Ghost Club” — John Kendrick Bangs A comic supernatural story about crime, ghosts, and absurd afterlife logic; lighter and more satirical than scary. 102A “A Ghost Story” — Mark Twain Twain turns the haunted-room setup into a comic ghost story, playing with superstition and mistaken identity. 102B “A Psychical Prank” — John Kendrick Bangs Corrected from “Physical Prank.” A humorous Bangs ghost tale built around spiritualism, trickery, and supernatural mischief. 103 “A Midnight Visitor” — John Kendrick Bangs A comic supernatural visit in the night, with Bangs's usual mix of ghosts, manners, and absurd afterlife complications. 104A “A Quicksilver Cassandra” — John Kendrick Bangs Corrected author/title. A satirical ghostly fantasy about prophecy, warning, and not being believed. 104B “The Water Ghost of Harrowby Hall” — John Kendrick Bangs A funny Christmas ghost story about a soggy apparition who floods the ancestral house every year. 105 “The Chromatic Ghosts of Thomas” — Ellis Parker Butler A comic “ghost cat” story involving Thomas the cat and a colorful supernatural problem. 106 “Phantom” — Arnold Bennet       107A “An Astral Onion” — Elia Wilkinson Peattie A strange little supernatural story with Peattie's mix of humor, domestic life, and odd spiritual machinery. 107B “The Haunted Orchard” — Richard Le Gallienne A lyrical ghost story about an orchard haunted by memory, beauty, and possibly the spirit of a young girl. 108 “Glamis Castle” — Elliott O'Donnell A haunted-castle account built around the legends of Glamis, full of old-family dread and spectral atmosphere. 109 “The Return of Imray” — Rudyard Kipling Corrected spelling: Kipling. A colonial ghost/mystery story about a vanished man whose return is not what anyone expects. 110A “Since I Died” — Elizabeth Stuart Phelps A sentimental supernatural piece told from beyond death, focused on grief, love, and the living left behind. 110B “On the Northern Ice” — Elia Wilkinson Peattie A short icy ghost story, also known in some listings as “The Spectre Bride.” 111 “The Withered Arm” — Thomas Hardy A dark rural tale of jealousy, folk belief, class, and bodily curse, with the bleak fatalism Hardy does so well. 112 “The Yellow Wallpaper” — Charlotte Perkins Gilman A woman confined for a “rest cure” becomes obsessed with the room's wallpaper; psychological horror and feminist classic.

EPISODE 168 | Eating the Onions: War of the Worlds & Other Scares In an environment of experimental fiction, metanarratives, postmodern satire, disinformation, deep fakes, and fake news, a sizeable portion of the content gobbling audience takes things that are not true as being actually true. Online, this happens with alarming regularity with articles published by satirical news site The Onion; so often, in fact, that there's a term for this phenomenon – it's called Eating the Onion. The subjects of intentional disinformation, deep fakes, and fake news are one thing, but what we're looking at here at times when something that was never intended to be taken seriously (though it used real world tropes and structures for narrative effect), were accidentally thought to be base din reality. And people quite rather lost their shit. Like the 1938 Orson Welles broadcast of The War of the Worlds. But there are other instances as well. Review us here or on IMDb. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Ben Wikler has spent his career moving between comedy and politics, communication and organizing. Growing up in Madison, Wisconsin, a city shaped by civic engagement, academic inquiry, and the satirical spirit that gave rise to The Onion, he developed a worldview in which humor isn't a distraction from democracy, but one of the ways people learn to trust one another enough to participate in it. Wikler has become one of the country's most closely watched political organizers. He was the chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin from 2019-2025, and is the author of This Is the Plan: How to End America's Meltdown and Save Democracy. But this conversation isn't about campaign tactics or election cycles. Instead, it's about the values and experiences that shaped him: the Wisconsin Idea, the role of humor in public life, the changing media landscape, and why curiosity, optimism, and solidarity remain essential ingredients of democratic life. Recorded at the Madison home where Ben grew up, and where he and his wife are now raising their own family, this is a conversation about place, purpose, and what it takes to keep believing in the promise of democracy. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

He's been doing this for decades, so he was able to take me by the hand and show me what he learned, very concretely. Susie went off on people with misophonia out of nowhere. Sarah teaches us about "analog rules." We discuss the insane documentary, Maternal Instinct, where a woman pretended to be pregnant and then kills a pregnant woman and steals her baby. We learn how this happened and discuss how the medical professionals who knew she couldn't be pregnant claimed they couldn't alert anyone because of HIPPA rules. We find out why young people are growing out their bushes, and we are not sure we support this. Maybe a little bush maintenance would be a nice compromise? An Amazon worker was delivering a package when he was confronted with his own lost cat at the home of his neighbor (who had stolen it), and after he took his cat back he was fired. We find out how climate change is affecting animals, and it turns out, we're not the only ones who are sweating our balls off.00:00 - Why Toy Story's Message of Imagination Matters03:14 - From Space Analogs to Personal Growth and Cozy Comfort15:18 - Gen Z's 'Bush in a Bikini' Trend and Pubic Hair Debates27:58 - The Amazon Driver Who Found His Lost Cat at a Delivery34:57 - Unraveling the Web of Lies: Maternal Instinct Documentary Part 142:35 - The Horrific Fake Pregnancy, Murder, and Baby Theft59:18 - HIPAA's Role and the Bystander Effect in a Tragic Case01:01:49 - Climate Change's Effect on Behavior and Episode TakeawaysBrain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Head to https://cozyearth.com and use my code BRAINCANDY for an exclusive 20% off. Last Thursday, the satirical newspaper The Onion started its own version of Infowars, the infamous online hub of misinformation created by Alex Jones. The takeover has been years in the making. After Mr. Jones lost two defamation cases, his assets were put up for auction. The Onion took over Infowars and said it planned to convert the site into a parody of itself. Ben Collins, who is the chief executive of The Onion, and the comedian Tim Heidecker talk about what they plan to do with the newly acquired platform and why they pushed so hard to take control of it.  Guest: Ben Collins, chief executive of The Onion Tim Heidecker, actor and comedian Background reading:  The Onion's plan to take over Infowars. We're belatedly celebrating America's birthday, and reminiscing about the bicentennial furniture craze of 1976. Susie read the book Into Thin Air about the 1996 Everest tragedy where many climbers perished, and the unintended consequences of the book. We discuss the Mel Robbins' book, Let Them, and the allegations that the idea was "stolen" from a viral poem, and we find out why certain things are not covered by copyright rules and intellectual property limits. We talk about the lawsuit between Patagonia and a drag queen named, Pattie Gonia, where the company is having to protect their trademark, but is inspiring ire from the TikTok community who are defending their queen. We hear why Japanese women are calling for the men in their country to be as committed to contributing to the domestic labor as they are at soccer stadiums where they've gotten a lot of attention for cleaning up after games. We giggle about dads who don't know the details about their children's lives. But a threatening note to his widow, claiming "you're next" blows the case wide open, leading to a treasure trove of evidence. The suspect turns out to be the last person that the dead man would've expected, and it also turns out that this murderer has no depths to which they will not sink!!   Along the way, we find out that there are an awful lot of ghost stories in the mountains, that when someone tries to blow you up, you should maybe be pretty curious to find out who did it, and that cutting a barcode off of a card doesn't mean it's not traceable!!   New episodes, every Wednesday & Friday nights!!
