Nia DaCosta's adaptation is queer and multiracial in ways that are reminiscent of "Bridgerton." The cinematography and production design are gorgeous, but see it for the clothes alone. Iranian master Jafar Panahi tells the story of several disparate people who come together to abduct and confront the man they believe was their torturer in prison. It's a wrap!On the thirty-first night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing THE THING (1982), from the master, director John Carpenter, the film has a screenplay by Bill Lancaster , from a short story "Who Goes There?" from the author, John W. Campbell Jr.  A team of American researchers at a remote Antarctic outpost encounters a sled dog fleeing a Norwegian helicopter, only to discover a terrifying, shape-shifting alien entity.  After the entity infiltrates their camp and begins absorbing and perfectly imitating the men, extreme paranoia takes hold, as no one can be sure who is still human and who is the "Thing."  The remaining men desperately fight to expose the alien before it can escape the base and assimilate all life on Earth, leading to a desperate final confrontation in the frozen isolation.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 31 m, is rated R and we caught it on DVD but you can find it on AMC+, Peacock and on Prime Video to buy/rent. The Last Frontier Top User Rated Original Movies per Streamer Last week we ran down the top streamer's price histories and at one point I (Ara), said that Amazon really didn't have many movies worth watching but since it came included with Prime shipping who cares. So this week I wanted to see what Amazon Original Movies were available and how they rated on IMDB. This did not include TV series like Reacher, Terminalist, etc. I just wanted to see if there was something I was missing. Then I expanded it to all the streamers we talked about last week and thus we created a list of the highest rated original movies from each streamer as rated by viewers on IMDB. Note the list goes from lowest to highest. Paramount+ Hunger Ward (2020) with a rating of 7.1/10. This short documentary, directed by Skye Fitzgerald, explores the Yemeni Civil War's famine through the work of two female health workers at therapeutic feeding centers for malnourished children. It premiered on Paramount+ in 2021 and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject. Hulu Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022) with a rating of 7.2/10 based on over 34,000 user votes. Directed by Sophie Hyde and starring Emma Thompson as a widowed retiree exploring her sexuality with a young sex worker (Daryl McCormack), it's a witty and intimate comedy-drama praised for its honest take on aging, desire, and vulnerability. Peacock Psych 3: This Is Gus (2021) with a rating of 7.5/10 based on over 5,500 user votes. This comedy-mystery TV movie, directed by Steve Franks, serves as the third installment in the Psych film series and follows fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and his best friend Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill) as they investigate Gus's bride-to-be's past amid wedding chaos, all while Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) faces career uncertainty. Directed by Park Chan-wook and adapted from Sarah Waters' novel Fingersmith, this erotic psychological thriller is set in 1930s Japanese-occupied Korea. It follows a con artist, a pickpocket disguised as a handmaiden, and a wealthy heiress in a tale of seduction, betrayal, and revenge told across three perspectives. Amazon Studios acquired U.S. distribution rights after its 2016 Cannes premiere, making it an exclusive Prime Video original. Its high rating comes from praise for its intricate plot, stunning visuals, and strong performances by Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri, and Ha Jung-woo. On the twenty-ninth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing EVIL DEAD 2 (1987), from director Sam Raimi, the film has a screenplay by Sam Raimi and Scott Spiegel.  Continuing his gruesome ordeal, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) is left alone and trapped at a remote cabin after his terrifying encounter with the evil forces unleashed by the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis.  He spends a horrific night battling the demonic entity, which possesses his own hand and drives him to the brink of insanity with surreal, slapstick violence.  When a small group arrives at the cabin with the missing pages of the Book of the Dead, Ash must overcome his madness and embrace his role as a Deadite-slaying champion.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 24 m, is rated R and we caught it on HBO Max but you can find it on Prime Video to buy/rent. Prior to creating The Lovers, Daviel had a lot of experience with writing, directing and producing, but with the barriers of the lockdowns, she decided to also star in the series, a first that helped her realize she actually wanted to do what her character was doing. On the twenty-seventh night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing GRETEL & HANSEL (2020), from director Osgood Perkins, the film has a screenplay by Rob Hayes based on the Grimm fairy tale.  Separated from their desperate mother, teenage Gretel (Sophia Lillis) leads her younger brother Hansel (Samuel Leakey) through a desolate, distant fairytale countryside in a desperate search for food and work.  After a long journey, the siblings are lured by the scent of a lavish feast to a strange, black-gabled house in the forest, home to the seemingly kind but unsettling woman (Alice Krige).  As Gretel's protective instincts clash with the woman's manipulative attempts to mentor her in burgeoning dark powers, the siblings begin to uncover the chilling and sinister secrets of the seemingly bottomless pantry and their host's true nature.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 27 m, is rated PG-13 and we caught it on the Hoopla app but you can find it on Prime Video, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video. This week on "Streaming Without A Paddle" Andrew and Ted sit down to discuss this monster based thriller "Wolf Man" now available on Prime Video. This horror-esk movie stars Christopher Abbott (Blake) and Julia Garner (Charlotte) as this husband and wife take their young daughter to Blake's now presumed to be deceased father's off-grid home deep in the mountains of Oregon as it is now his. Once Blake's childhood home he feels it is necessary for this troubled couple to get back to basics to save their marriage from he believes a city life driving a wedge between them. Childhood horrors aside, Blake loads up a rental truck with their belongs and they head out. As they near the house the childhood horrors return as they are forced off the road by a mysterious force, the wolf man. They struggle to make it safely to the home where the spend their first night fighting this demon creature. Tune into the show to find out what Andrew and Ted thought of this Prime Video acquisition.

On the twenty-sixth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister and KT join me in reviewing TUCKER AND DALE vs EVIL (2010), from writers Eli Craig and Morgan Jurgenson, the film is directed by Eli Craig.  Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine), two kind-hearted but stereotypical-looking "hillbillies," head to their newly purchased vacation cabin in the woods for a relaxing fishing trip and some home renovation.  Their peaceful getaway is interrupted by a group of college students who, due to a series of hilarious and increasingly gruesome misunderstandings, become convinced that Tucker and Dale are murderous backwoods killers.  As the terrified college students attempt to "fight back" or "rescue" their friends, they accidentally cause a series of bizarre and bloody fatalities, leaving the baffled and innocent duo struggling to figure out why these kids are killing themselves all over their property.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 29 m, is rated R and we caught it on Prime Video but you can find it on the Hoopla app as well as Hulu, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video.
